A word from Blackbird
Critically-acclaimed Blackbird is home base for Executive Chef Paul Kahan, winner of the 2004 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest, and the 2013 James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Blackbird's principal partner, Donnie Madia, crafted a unique urban chic atmosphere that earned the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Design in 2002.

Chef de Cuisine David Posey joined Kahan in the kitchen in 2010. Together they reinterpret classic recipes using simple, local, farm-fresh ingredients, and cutting-edge culinary technique. Their menu is, at once, highly creative and utterly approachable.

Blackbird is the premier, pioneer West Loop restaurant. Its award-winning cuisine, high energy, and precise service offer a modern approach to fine dining. Blackbird earned a place on Gourmet's 2004 list of the country's 50 Best Restaurants, an Ivy Award from Restaurants & Institutions, and induction into the Nation's Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame.

Diner Reviews
  • "Our dining experience was wonderful until we went to get our car. The valet driver side-swiped our car onto a parked car as he was driving our car out of the parking area. Terrible ending to a great lunch!"

  • "Interesting use of the freshest of ingredients. Flavors and textures to please the palate. Attentive service, a surprise amuse bouche, a thank you champagne. One of my favorite Chicago restaurants."

  • "Recently went to dinner at Blackbird to celebrate. We were highly disappointed. We did the tasting menu. Several courses were very good but nothing was extraordinary and several course were disappointing. Service was so slow that it took more than 3 hours to work our way through the courses. Portions were so small we stopped for a snack on the way home. Very expensive for what you get. Overall, very disappointing."

  • "Food was not particularly innovative or delicious. Curious platings with small portions of food placed on the edge of the plate with a wide swath of empty white plate filling the remainder. Was hoping for amazing, got underwhelming. Will not return."

  • "The food was outstanding! Never had Sturgeon before and was great. The preparation was perfect. If the soft shell crab appetizer is available it is a must have. Crispy and delectable. The Third Day cocktail was refreshing and the perfect summer drink."

  • "Slow service, slow food, and the most important part...bad food. There are many way better places than this."

  • "Really nice contemporary space (white walls w/one long banquette + tables); great, friendly, not overbearing service; very tasty salads and mains; good cocktails and nice small selection of by-the-glass wine pours. Had a fun date!"

  • "Will return. Excellent in every respect. The sturgeon was prepared perfectly with just the right seasoning."

  • "The reputation of Blackbird indicated we should try it. As long time Chicago residents, we wanted to see what the buzz was about. Clearly, the food was interesting and not something you will see everywhere. The price of the meal was really eye opening however and the lack of ambiance (sterility) did not make for an overall great experience. Also, the vodka options, while touted to be local and/or home grown, were lackluster. In a city with great eating, this one will not be on our return list."

  • "Sat on the patio which was very fine, excellent food when we finally received it. 45 minutes between ordering and eating. Comped 1 dessert for the wait."

  • "Fabulous meal at Blackbird. Service was outstanding as was the food. We drank wine by the glass from the list, and our server steered us right for every glass. Appetizers -- sweetbreads for one, trout confit -- were both fantastic. Halibut main course was among best we've had. Steak not quite up to the level of everything else, but still interesting. Overall a strongly recommended night out."

  • "The menu was limited, everything from bar to food was overpriced by a large margin. Crazy noisy, mediocre service and average food. The only redeeming quality really was the incredible dessert."

  • "Excellent lunch choice among a crowded west loop location. My wife and I were especially impressed with the quality of their service. They anticipated and dealt with everything with such polish and grace. My wife and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary lunch and I would strongly consider it for the third anniversary lunch as well. I hope they maintain this level of excellence in the future."

  • "Blackbird was dissapointing, everything was bland, no attention was given to the presentation or the taste of the food. I had the feeling that the kitchen just did not care. Service was overbearing (larger bill?). Past experience was great, but given this last dinner, I would not go back."

  • "Able to snag a reservation at this Chicago hot spot on a Saturday night. The "Tasting Menu" and the "Wine Pairings" were wonderful. Sarah gave us pearls/details about the courses and wines. With tip the dinner was expensive at $498.00 for 2 but a memorable meal. We were what I thought was appropriately dressed to dine at a 5 star restaurant. I guess I should get used to it, but I'm always surprised by the attire of other guest dining with us ... guys in tee-shirts and shorts and even a fellow wearing shower shoes! The restaurant could not help it but a screaming infant dined with his parents. The parents were mortified and the restaurant staff tried to do everything they could to get them through their meal ASAP ... and they did!"

  • "Everything we've ever eaten at Blackbird has been wonderful - interesting, inventive, well-executed. I can't think of another restaurant that achieves such consistent excellence."

  • "Blackbird's a great, small but big-on-taste restaurant that has received plenty accolades and recognition. Our party of 3 had char ceviche (thought was ok, not spectacular) and pate. Artistically presented main dishes were chicken (which looked like bacon-wrapped filet), sturgeon and lamb. All were succulent. These are small portions, not the stuff-your-face kind of fare. The desserts (flan, concha-bread and peach/mango sorbet) were equally top notch. Great with espresso. Pastry Chef Dana Cree was recognized this year by Food and Wine mag."

  • "We were visiting Chicago from Houston and Blackbird had consistently great reviews on all the site I use for finding restaurants. The design/decor space is simple with clean lines and a nice, light feel. The service was exceptionally attentive and super-knowledgeable on the dishes and the more exotic ingredients. The food was phenomenal. I had sweetbreads (one of my favorites which shows-up on too few menus for my liking) for my app and the sturgeon for my entree. The sturgeon might just be the best piece of fish I've ever had - very flavorful and perfectly cooked with a mix of artichoke hearts, radish, and lime as the accompaniment. My wife had the endive salad and saddle of rabbit. Both were wonderful. This place is a winner."

  • "Great restaurant, outstanding quality of food, great service."

  • "Left unimpressed after all the hype. At roughly $500 for tasting menu for two would have expected service to match with detailed course descriptions. Seemed like they were simply going through the motions with courses arriving in rapid succession with little time to reflect. Went to Nico the following night and had twice the experience at half the cost!"

  • ""Gourmet dining" doesn't due it justice. Brings to mind people who play golf and say "yeah I play, just wish I were way better" I love to cook , but a meal like this makes me feel like a hack golfer who's seen one of the best in the world ply their trade !"

  • "Outstanding in every way but be prepared for noise and sometimes a wait for your table. This is the go-to restaurant in a city famous for outstanding restaurants."

  • "Had another amazing working lunch at Blackbird yesterday. The food, service and ambiance were all perfect. My friend and I both had a chilled carrot soup for a starter. My friend ordered monk fish as an entree, and I ordered sturgeon. Both entrees were wonderful - interesting, light and right-size portions. My colleague ordered the prix fixe, and, frankly, when dessert arrived, I was jealous that I hadn't done the same. At the waiters urgency she ordered the orange blossom parfait. I didn't have a dessert vote, but I am not usually partial to orange desserts preferring chocolate. Well, I was lucky enough to get a taste of the parfait and it was divine. I look forward to coming back again soon!"

  • "Restaurant is gorgeous with modern decor and attentive servers. I disliked all the food that I ordered. I had the veal sweetbreads appetizer which came with tiny slices of plum, but the flavor and fat content was a bit overwhelming so I didn't finish the small plate. I had black bean agnolotti in spicy sauce with peas, pea shoots, morel mushrooms. The flavors didn't marry well, and the peas were an odd mix of cooked and dehydrated peas that was simply distracting. Dessert was the cinnamon concha with roasted and fresh strawberries and goat cheese ice cream. The concha was a pastry puff coated in cinnamon, but it was harder than day-old english muffins and I could barely cut it into pieces. Hubby loved the chocolate pudding."

  • "I've heard so much about this restaurant. I must say that the only reason I wanted to try it out was because it's owned by the same group as the Publican. I was disappointed. The food was trying too hard to be gastro. The servers were trying hard to be upscale. I felt as if they were trying to give this restaurant a hip vibe. When you try too hard at so many aspects, it's bound to be a fail. Not coming back here."

  • "It seems that high end restaurants come and go in a blink of an eye in Chicago. That's why we appreciate good, constant staples like Blackbird. Granted, it has been too long since our last visit but we corrected by celebrating a birthday there. The meal was exceptional, as always. However, I will say, compared to our last visit it feels like the overall experience has lost a bit. Perhaps it had something to do with this being our fifth high end dinner for a birthday "weekend" in as many nights (so...we were tired of great food?) but it seemed more like it was just not quite up to snuff for Blackbird. Perhaps the menu this time was simply not as much to our liking as last (though the lamb was amazing) but it just felt "diminished"."

  • "Pretentious, precious and not tasty, in fact didn't taste good at all. I so wanted to like it but really contrived and just not successful. On top of it all, it was extremely pricey."

  • "Blackbird lived up to all of the reviews. Had lunch their before catching my flight. I had the seared whitefish sandwich and my friend had the pork belly. Both were wonderful but the standout was the chef's daily soup ...turnip. It was sublime! The flavors and creamy texture was like liquid velvet on the tongue. The sleek modern interior enhanced our dining experience. The wait staff were friendly and attentive to our needs."

  • "I had the tasting menu at Blackbird. I found the place vibrant with a very hip-sophisticated clientele. The place had a pleasant buzz that indicated a strong following of knowledgeable diners. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Very professional. The food was outstanding. Each course complimented the others with flavors ranging from fresh and seasonal to full flavored and spicy. The only deviation from this great experience was that the monkfish was too salty. Otherwise, the food very well merits Blackbird's Michelin star. I expect to go back next time I am in Chicago."

  • "My husband and I were really excited to try Blackbird given it's reputation, and we were disappointed to find it overpriced and underwhelming. We were celebrating our anniversary, and we were hoping for a dining experience. Our server was nice and professional, but we felt that our food was rushed. He had us in and out in under an hour. Also, I was hoping for more input from him with regard to wine pairings for our meal. I asked about a particular wine, and he basically said ok, and got me my wine without any further discussion. Again, we were hoping for a dining experience, and all we got was a meal. We left with lots to be desired. There are so many other restaurants of this caliber that are more worthwhile than Blackbird."

  • "You get what you pay for at Blackbird. I was a little underwhelmed by the food, the service, and the cocktails. It's good, but there are many other places in the same neighborhood to try first."

  • "Could be a great place if they didn't try so hard to be different Food is always high quality but highly infused oftentimes too rich Sometimes simpler is just better "

  • "I'd been meaning to try Blackbird's prix fixe lunch menu for a while and finally had the chance earlier this week. Alas, the salad was very plain and the monkfish was mediocre. The cheesecake was pretty good, although it would have been better with less pineapple and puffed rice. Overall, I had just expected better."
