Critically acclaimed Blackbird is home base for Executive Chef Paul Kahan, winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef in 2013 and Best Chef of the Midwest in 2004.


Chef de Cuisine Perry Hendrix joined Kahan in the kitchen in 2014, and together they craft elegant and imaginative Midwestern cuisine, showcasing farm-fresh ingredients to create a menu both classic and utterly approachable.


Managing Partner and Owner Donnie Madia and Architect Thomas Schlesser crafted a unique and timeless atmosphere in 1997, earning the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Design and Best Restaurant Design Graphics in 2002.

  • "Blackbird does a fantastic job with their overall dining experience. The setting of the restaurant is quite intimate, yet still bright and lively. Being able to see the entire kitchen (3 people) from the dining room prepare all of the food is very impressive. Their French style is very good, loaded with rich, decadent flavor. The presentation of each plate is great , despite the somewhat small portion size. I would suggest trying the pre fixe menu for lunch. It's rotational and allows you to try 3 dishes of your choice an appetizer, entree and dessert. I'll definately be going back to check out the dinner and drinks"

  • "The decor was too sterile and white. The service was prompt ( though the restaurant was only half full) and stilted. The meals arrived too quickly giving the impression of being rushed. The food flavours did not match ( raw turnips with the duck did not gel and the sauce with the monk fish was not nice) and while the chocolate dessert was delicious, presented looking like a cow's pad did nothing for me. The tea's were lovely but the wine's were mediocre - though that could have been our poor selection. Overall disappointing, over rated and over priced. Had more enjoyable meals in Chicago at Seasons 52 and another small restaurant around the corner from there - can't remember the name but great food, wine and service for 2/3 price. R"

  • "The service was especially noteworthy, from the moment of entering the restaurant to the point of departure. The food was very good, but there is a tendency for all the dishes ( at least the ones the two of us ordered) to consist of small pieces of ......dropped randomly on the plate. Too much new style and not enough focus on flavor and consistency, even though everything was good. For instance, we both ordered the signature dish: sturgeon, and mine was medium rare, and the other person's was well done. Also, the pinot noir was much too cold (we ordered a bottle), and the server came over to pour it much too often. The pace needs to be more relaxed. Please show this to the restaurant."

  • "I went to Blackbird under the recommendation of a friend. The Missy and I tried the prefix lunch menu just to be on the safe side. Comfit trout, monk fish, hanger steak, and mango dessert were all very delicious and well-seasoned. The presentation was very simple and clean. The service was very straight forward and moderately attentive without feeling harassed. When we visit Chicago again, we will certainly return for dinner/tasting menu. It's a great way to end your vacation."

  • "Amuse bouche of sausage & blackberry was a delicious start, trout appetizer was amazing. We were 2 courses in before our first round of cocktails were served, however they were delicious. Beef tongue and chicken wing appetizers were both excellent in taste & texture. The sweetbread appetizer was disappointing, as well was the endive salad. The desserts were 3 of the best desserts we had while dining our way through Chicago. Service was excellent. I would return, especially for dessert."

  • "My wife and I decided to go for my birthday. The food was amazing. The chefs here turn out a very good product. We had the scallops and boneless wing as an appetizer. Both were excellent. We also had the steak and duck breast for entrées. If you luck duck you will love this dish. It had many layers of flavor. The only thing I will say negative was the demographics. When we got there at 8 pm on a friday the average age of customers was probably 70. However when we left there were three guys in baseball hats and tshirts sitting at the bar. So when we go back im not really sure what time to go and whether or not to wear my flip flops or my Armani. Because I will be going back soon."

  • "Many James Beard awards/nominations on walls. Room is very stark/modern, white and black. We coordinated. Table too close and VERY noisy. Food very good if a bit esoteric. Would not be a nominee for a sure fire place to go when in Chicago. It's a bit too-too food wise, but well done. Yuppies or whatever they're called now would love it--or pretend to."

  • "Chose Blackbird a business lunch. Seating adequate and noise level OK. Food very good - the duck foie gras, in particular. Table service was severely lacking in engagement, knowledge and respect. A little condescending too as he mumbled his way through the specials. Limited explanation of menu. Forgot wine order. Reminded twice. Had to ask for silverware when entree arrived. These are not small things - it separates mediocre restaurants from good and gets repeat business. Overall, his attitude was cursory, indifferent and he really wanted to be someplace else. Hoping, for Blackbird's sake, that he was having a bad day and it's not reflective of the team. Unfortunately, I'm unlikely to recommend or dine there again soon."

  • "When you wait 15 minutes to have someone approach your table, order drinks that take another 10 (could see them on the bar), then ask for a glass of the bottle of the wine ordered and he says, "Oh, did you want a glass of a white wine" "No, we ordered a bottle" "What bottle?".....you get the drift that the service was lacking. The food remains delicious....at the close, as the table next to us had come and gone (having been served the after dinner sweets) we were given the bill, no sweets, and a clear encouragement to clear the table. I'd say go for good food, but low service expectations and you will have a lovely evening."

  • "I ordered a salad 1st course which looked lovely for the few seconds I saw it before a waiter startled me by lunging over me with a fork and knife, slashing the salad to bits. In the process my linen blouse was splattered with salad dressing. They should have asked me if I was OK with them doing this. I would have said "no". I don't need anyone to cut up my food."

  • "I went to Blackbird because my brother (a chef) raved that it was the best restaurant in Chicago. And it definitely doesn't disappoint! The food was excellent in terms of preparation and presentation. What really got me were the unusual pairings of flavors and textures. I had the sturgeon which was served with a tahini and radishes with a light lemoney sauce. Overall, highly recommend it!"

  • "We went here based on good reviews and decided to try the chef's tasting menu. The food was perfect! Each bite was unexpected yet amazing. Very creative. Service was good, however one problem we had was our server being slow to refill drinks. One of us was asking for a wine recommendation and our server simply handed her the wine menu...not really impressed by that. We probably would have spent more on alcohol if he were a bit more attentive."

  • "We dined at Blackbird again this weekend after first trying it many years ago. The food did not disappoint and service was great. It may seem strange to say but the coffee- both regular and decaf was some of the best I ever had. Great combinations and flavors of food. In evaluating Blackbird from a value standpoint, the question becomes more difficult. With entrees in the high 30s, you have to think about whether the food is that much better than restaurants which stick closer to $30. I am not sure. We live in NY where you can find some very expensive meals. We can also get outstanding cuisine at the $30 price point. I think we will be back because it is enjoyable but not regularly.There are delicious options that may be better values."

  • "Overall great experience. Highly recommend the soft shell crab appetizer and fennel gazpacho. These items definitely set the tone for the rest of the meal. The waiter was very helpful with the entree options. My husband and I were stuck between a few items and we chose the sturgeon and monkfish. My husband raved about it all night. The monkfish was an absolute delight. If you like spicy then go for it. For dessert we had the cinnamon concha. Very scrumptious. They also have a full bar and were very accommodating. They made me a Cucumber Collins that was not on their menu and it was the best I have ever had. Lots of first dates around us and large family tables."

  • "A friend raved about the lunch there, so I took him back one day. A great place for business lunches, the service is fast, elegant and educated. They offer a price Fix menu and a la carte. The food is not only beautifully presented, but the portions are right-sized and ultra delicious. The endive salad is a must! also, the sturgeon and Orange Blossom dessert are memorable!   • "Blackbird has always been one of my long-time favorite restaurants. The food and service is consistently among the best in the city. Even on a Monday night, they continue to elevate the bar. Grace, our server, was tremendous. She walked us through the menu with mouthwatering elegance. I could almost taste the food based on her description (food network take note). It was an evening where everything came together perfectly. Food, service, wine selection and ambiance. Can’t wait to return!"

  • "Every dish was superlative, starting from crusty wedge of sourdough bread & amuse bouche, followed by silky smooth gazpaco then onto gently fried pillowy pieces of sweetbreads & entree with perfectly grilled sturgeon with artichoke sott'olio. Orange Blossom parfait was the best dessert I've had since I can remember. Lets not forget the great cocktails! Since I was a visitor to the city, the solicitous manager even enquired if I needed a taxi after the meal. Perfect evening to end my visit to the bright and sunny Windy City."

  • "As a precursor, I never write reviews. I'm making an exception here because this dining experience was simply the best I have ever had in my life. The food was absolutely delicious and the imagination behind the combining of tastes and flavors left me in awe. The hostess was so attentive to us and was so knowledgable about all the menu items. One of my friends, who was dining with us, was asking her to describe plates we were not even going to order just to hear her explain them. He said her descriptions were "poetry in motion." The ambiance was excellent as well. Overall, best dining experience of my life."

  • "To keep it short and sweet, we ordered the tasting menu. 8 courses, all very tiny portions. Absolutely loved 4 courses, but then taste is subjective. The chef is interested in playing with the different taste senses. I did notice we received an orchestrated service with each new course placed before us in perfect timing. However, those whko did not order the tasting menu had to wait quite a bit. In summary, go."

The restaurant did offer us two free desserts to compensate, but even so this was a very disappointing evening. We won't be heading back."
