A word from Blackbird
Critically-acclaimed Blackbird is home base for Executive Chef Paul Kahan, winner of the 2004 James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Midwest, and nominee for Outstanding Chef in 2007. Blackbird's principal partner, Donnie Madia, crafted a unique urban chic atmosphere that earned the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Design in 2002.

Chef de Cuisine David Posey joined Kahan in the kitchen in 2010. Together they reinterpret classic recipes using simple, local, farm-fresh ingredients, and cutting-edge culinary technique. Their menu is, at once, highly creative and utterly approachable.

Blackbird is the premier, pioneer West Loop restaurant. Its award-winning cuisine, high energy, and precise service offer a modern approach to fine dining. Blackbird earned a place on Gourmet's 2004 list of the country's 50 Best Restaurants, an Ivy Award from Restaurants & Institutions, and induction into the Nation's Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame.

Diner Reviews
  • "If you want to have a real conversation, this is not the place. Ambience is fun. Food is great, service is attentive if not always spot on. The lamb was very fatty. Sturgeon and halibut were great."

  • "This was a double birthday celebration, my daughters 21st and my 60th. We were visiting from NYC, The restaurant was recommended to us by several of our friends in New York, and now we know why. Everything was delicious! I can't wait for another celebration so we can return. Actually may have to find more excuses for more celebrations..... Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Waiter were cold and arrogant. very loud! Food not memorable. Plating awful. Eight course chef tasting menu: 1st course Tempura Perch is a joke. Should be a surprise teaser. Sauerkraut is too sour and tough, halibut is tender; quail is salty; sepia curb is tasty; sirloin done well, but too salty. Walnut gnocchi has aweful texture and no taste. Chicken is dry. Bittersweet chocolate pudding is so aweful that we barely touched it. Don't get me wrong. The food is good, for an ordinary restaurant. But for a famed chef and the cost? Completely underwhelming! There is no transition, no cleansing of palette. No surprise factor. Nothing exquisite! No competition with Spago in LA. For the same price, If Spago is 9, blackbird get a 6!"

  • "Had lunch with a friend last week. We talked for 2 hours and were never rushed. When one can talk about the food for 10 minutes after it's served you know you're eating something special. I would have given 5 stars but they were out of the 1972 aged tea... a missed adventure!"

  • "My husband and I went for our anniversary. It was excellent for a special occasion. The service was absolutely impeccable. The food was well-done. I was pleasantly surprised by the unique cocktails. I had the Poor Liza and my husband had the Presbyterian. We both throughly enjoyed our appetizers, dinners and desserts. We are looking forward to going back for another special occasion."

  • "Had another great dinner here. Food is great, presentation is beautiful. Service is top notch - attentive, but not hovering. This place is always busy, even on weeknights and it's because it is just wonderful."

  • "We had to wait for a while in the beginning because our table was not yet ready. But once we were seated, the experience was great. Very attentive service, excellent food."

  • "Overall, Blackbird is a great establishment and I had a lovely lunch when I came here with my boss. The menu seemed to have a lot of variteties and everything looked delicious. I went online to the lunch prix-fixe menu so that I could talk specifically about what I had for lunch but unfortunately the website has not been updated. I do remember having a caramelized onion soup which was delicious but not hot enough. At the end of the meal, our server came over to our table and asked what we wanted for dessert, when in fact we had already pre-ordered dessert with him as part of the prix-fixe lunch. This seemed like a silly error to me but other than that, service was great."

  • "Blackbird is a genuine must. A menu filled with interesting and natural ingredients, elegantly prepared. The cheesecake with the iced pineapple is a good a dessert as I have ever had. The service, friendliness of management and ambiance are all first rate. The Mayor thought so as well. We were there at the same time. Put Blackbird on your list."

  • "The service was impeccable! The food had a delicious taste but the portions were very small for the price. It would have been fine had I not been so hungry when I arrived. My husband and I are not big eaters, but these portions seemed tiny. If you want a delicious light meal this is the place to go."

  • "Delicious and imaginative, a favorite of ours. Especially impressive wine list that is not overpriced."

  • "The decor is spartan and the neighborhood is anything but scenic, but the food and service were outstanding. It is not that often that I find myself thinking about a meal days later but both my wife and I did just that - even remembering something as simple as the endive salad (it was great - no kidding!) Our server, Shannon, was a treat and kept the evening lively. We cannot wait to return. Enjoy!"

  • "Excellent food, exceptional wines, gorgeous presentation. Blackbird definitely delivers on its reputation. Took my wife here for a special occasion and we were very pleased. Nice, clean, and well lit tables with friendly, knowledgable service. Everything was first class. We had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and it was excellent. Interestingly enough, I feel like dinner was a good value. The price was high ($500 for dinner for two? Whew...) but the food and service were excellent. We wouldn't eat here every night, but for a special occasion, it was the right choice."

  • "I enjoyed the cocktails at this place and the scallops were very tasty. I always expect to have to hail down someone for attention, at this place you are never waiting on anything. I feel the service makes this place a great one for a nice dinner."

  • "The food is top notch and waitstaff very attentive, but don't expect to carry on a conversation without shouting - and having those at neighboring tables overhear and join in on your conversation. You can't help but meet the people next to you - they are 6 inches away. Go as a group, not as a couple wanting special time together. Back to food - everything is outstanding. Beef tartare and sweetbread appetizers had an awesome sauce. My husband's elk loin was several slices cooked to perfection. I had the schmaltz chicken which was tastey. We both were not fond of the wood burned veggies - too overpowering. Speaking of wood burning, lots of food is cooked with a "smokey" taste and the restaurant has a subtle odor of outdoor bonfire."

  • "From the beginning when one of the hosts tracked down the valet parker to the end when our car was waiting for us, everything was perfect. Although expensive, we felt that the meal was well wortht the cost. The food, obviously, is among the best in Chicago with every dish art work for the eye as well as the palate. Service was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. We could not have asked for a better evening."

  • "Noise Level was far too high- difficult to talk. Portions are tiny but that would be ok if the food was outstanding. It was not. I have eaten so much better. Don't know why they got a Michelin star."

  • "all was excellent ! great fish and great elk the starters were very good but the portions too small"

  • "I dined on a Sunday night and was very rushed. They should not have booked an 8 o'clock Reservation if they wanted out by 9:30. A lot of $ to be rushed!!!"

  • "Light and airy surroundings. Long banquet with individual tables. The food was delicious. Even the mixed green salad somehow tasted fresher and more flavorful than expected. Duck sausage entree and monkfish entree were outstanding. Desserts were okay. Wine selection was very good. Waiter was very helpful in picking wine to match courses, however water refilling and bread replacement had to be requested, and the restaurant was not full. Overall, would definitely go back."

  • "Having enjoyed Big Star and Publican, I couldn't wait to try Blackbird. Same friendly and inviting service at all these restaurants is definitely appreciated. Love the variety in the menu that satisfied my fish loving wife (sturgeon and caviar) and my more meat driven desires (miso cured pork collar). Great looking spot where jeans and sweater is as welcomed as gals dressed for a night on the town. Worth a visit."

  • "Love the duck sausage and beef tartare. The cocktail Fox Hunt was delicious! Service was good. We made reservation but wait 20ish minutes at bar because several tables stay profoundly long after paying their checks. We decided to dine at bar instead. The restaurant waived the bill, a very nice gesture."

  • "We recently went to blackbird for the first time, and would recommend it and will be repeat visitors. The food was excellent, and the service was beyond excellent. The atmosphere is close and almost encourages sociability from table to table...which can be good and bad. All in all, an excellent choice to have an amazing evening."

  • "We arrived one hour late for our reservation. More like 70 to 80 minutes. They held our table and had the usual great meal. Service was quick and since we had other plans after dinner we had three courses in 90 minutes."

  • "Knowing that I would be in Chicago, My co-workers (all cooks, sous, and execs) told me to go to blackbird... meal and service was flawless."

  • "Excellent dining, well prepared and while not as innovative as Alinea, it is not as expensive and I would say it is a top 10 Chicago restaurant."

  • "The lunch prix fixe menu had a nice selection from the larger menu. The portions are on the smaller side, but the flavors are complex and unique, making for a nice change of pace."

  • "Third visit was not a charm. Food was hit or miss (tasteless Asian Pear on watery scallops, way over-salted sturgeon in an otherwise outstanding dish) and our waiter was over-the-top arrogant and unhelpful. Refused to describe an entree selection for us because he dismissed it as vegetarian"
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "Service was good, Appetizers and drinks were great. Main courses of Sturgeon and Elk Loin were mediocre for the price. Definitely better options out there for the cost. For a couple of two you could go to Next for a little more."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "I understand this is a gourmet restaurant, but this is rediculous. A dinner for (2) people with one drink each and tip was $175.00. It left there with my ears ringing from all the noise and hungry. I would only recommend it for the young and wealthy."

  • "My wife and I took our baby-moon to Chicago and very much looked forward to dining at Blackbird. The experience was wonderful. They noted the pregnancy and offered accommodations to the menu without our asking. They made my wife wonderful mocktails throughout the evening. The food was delicious. We had difficulty narrowing down the menu so opted for the tasting menu. They substituted octopus for the tartar, which turned out to be one my wife's favorite dishes on our whole trip. The elk loin was earthy and delicious. The chicken course was complex and ultimately my favorite. The staff was attentive, efficient, and unobtrusive. The chef and kitchen staff had fun and it showed in their creations. I highly recommend Blackbird."

  • "we made a trip to chicago mostly just to dine here. the food was phenomenal and our service was also great. when they called to confirm the reservation, they asked about any special occasions. because we were celebrating an anniversary, they presented us each with a glass of champagne at the end of our meal. i would definitely dine here again."

  • "Took husband for his bday adter reading the good reviews. Hw had the elk and I had the monkfish . The elk was extremely rare and bland. The monkfish quite bland as well. As many reviewers stated portion size is small. More along the size of appetizers. Overrated and expensive won't be back. Sad for hubby he is foodie and all he wvwr wants for his nday is a good meal. Must say our server qas excellwnt very nice unpretentious staff"

  • "What is there to say? Their reputation and longevity speak for themselves. Stellar and accessible wine list, top notch service and consistently excellent food. My wife is expecting and they were very accomodating, crafting something special for her from their "Temperance" cocktails. Pacing was great, no rushing but immediately attentive. When we arrived the place was jam packed, energetic and a little on the loud side, but it didn't last. By the time we left, tables to the left and right of us had been empty for awhile so the space feels more private later in the night. The next time I go back, I'd like to go for lunch, sit at their counter and dismantle that wine list one glass or bottle at a time....."
