A word from Blackbird and Henry
Throughout his 35 years as a chef and restaurateur, Chef Schmidt has visualized opening a comfortable, neighborhood restaurant designed for guests to gather and relax while enjoying a collection of his favorite and award-winning dishes and imbibing on carefully selected spirits, wines and ales.

"Blackbird and Henry is a place to hang out and unwind after work, gather with friends for curry and pint night, and enjoy quality food," says Chef Schmidt. "My Austin regulars from Café 909 will find a few of their favorites on the menu along with new twists and surprises that I hope will delight a wide variety of guests."

Not sure if we will return...cocktails were well made, food was good not great (except for the fries) and the music was just horrible. 90's new wave (boys with eyeliner bands) was too loud and too much for dinner. I may know all the words to these songs but, it doesn't mean we want to eat dinner to them.

If you do simple, your ingredients and execution must be perfect. The Buttermilk Brined Chicken was both. Moist, full of flavor, roasted to perfection. One of the best we have ever had. The Pork Loin, on the other hand, was neither. No hint of apple brine, over-done and dry, and not the best cut of meat. Similar results for the first course. The Grilled Romaine was outstanding, but the Spinach Salad suffered from too much spinach and oil and not enough of anything else. In fairness, it was the first week of the new fall menu so corrections may be made. The service was friendly and efficient. The uneaten pork did not go un-noticed and was compted. All and all, hers was great and definitely worth another try.

My companion and I really enjoyed our first visit to Blackbird & Henry just across Guadalupe from Wheatsville Coop early on a Saturday evening. Both the food and the service were excellent, the waiter did a fine job, and the ambiance was quite nice. The entree portions were not anemic as I have often found at relatively high-end restaurants. We plan to return.

Our group of college friends gather once a month for brunch. Blackbird and Henry had long been on our list, but the truth is it just didn't live up to our anticipation. 1. There was plenty of staff, for a fairly empty restaurant on Sunday lunch, but they were not attentive. Many times our group was left with empty water bottles and glasses. 2. Although the menu looked diverse and full of flavor (one of the biggest reasons we chose B&H), the actual food failed to deliver. 3. Full disclosure: One person in our party is on a endocrinologist-prescribed diet for a thyroid disorder. We made note in the rsvp, however our waiter handled it in a way reminiscent of how some restaurants handle "picky" eaters - with a judgmental stare & eye roll.

The food was very nice - had pork loin which was sliced with vegetables. A cauliflower was very under cooked but the overall taste was very good. The staff was attentive, informative and friendly. He advised us on drinks, entrees and dessert. Plenty of parking in the building and very easy to fine location. Definitely a place to try out.

We were fans of Cafe 909, so when we heard the proprietor of that restaurant opened up B&H we decided to check it out with friends. The service was stellar...comfortable, enlightening, and not intrusive. The menu, while perhaps more limited that we were all used to, was nevertheless inventive. We chose four distinct entrees so we could sample and share. The buttermilk chicken was nicely done, and the lamb meatballs took the prize for the table favorite. And thankfully the chef carried over the frozen pistachio parfait from Cafe 909...it was a delectable finish to a very nice evening at Blackbird and Henry. But please...where did the name come from!?!?!

We came in on a Wednesday night and were seated promptly to a great table along the windows with a view outside. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable without being there to much. (We were on a date night and he noticed so he was there for everything we needed but not intrusive). He recommended the rabbit which I order and was blown away by. She had the lamb meatballs and loved them as well. Split a bottle of wine that was a rare find on most wine lists in Austin. All in all was an amazing experience, we will recommend to all of our friends and be back for sure.

I first heard about Blackbird and Henry when tasting a delicious "small bite" at the Tour de Vin event, and decided I had to go to the restaurant to have more. My opportunity came less than two weeks later for a pre-concert dinner (btw - great location for Bass Concert Hall nights out). I started with the smoked trout salad - super yummy, but the highlight was definitely the gnocchi! Wow! It had an amazing, creamy brown butter sauce and mushrooms and greens. They also have a good selection of specialty cocktails, and nice desserts.

Overall everything went well both with our service and food. However, one guest ordered salad with her meal and received mixed vegetables instead and the potatoes were underdone. Two plates of cornmeal crusted redfish were excellent and I had a half fillet left to take home. I requested additional okra relish to go on my fish. When I looked at my leftovers at home there was barely a teaspoon on top the fish.

Above average food; nice ambience. Location is so-so (sort of a strip mall feel) and the prices were way too expensive for what you get. We spent $260 for 3 people and if I'm going to spend that much, I would go elsewhere.

Check out B&H for boyfriend's birthday dinner - went with a group of 8, and felt very well taken care of. Oysters were fantastic, lobster and sweet corn orzo was incredible... but shrimp and crab cocktail was not very good at all. For main course, I has pork loin off rotisserie menu with roasted veggies. He had steak frites. Pork was tasteless and dry, veggies lacked depth of flavor you would expect with something cooked in pan drippings. Steak frites, on the other hand, was very good - if a bit saucy. Wine list had a lot of options, but chocolate tart was a bit lackluster. Overall, the pendulum swung between fantastic and not very good. Considering the cost, they need to kick it up a notch. I'll go back, if only to enjoy the orzo again!

Excellent first time visit to Blackbird & Henry! While we were very surprised to see other patrons dressed VERY casually for a Friday night (think shorts and tshirts) we quickly forgot about it as soon as we began to eat. Superb fresh oysters that would rival anything you'd find on the coast. Braised rabbit was divine as were the sides like fresh corn with feta and cilantro. I don't think anything we might have tried would have been bad. Service was top-notch. Benjy, our waiter, was flawless with his execution and jovial to boot. The female bartender (her name escapes me) was just as great and made mean cocktails that weren't the norm. Even the sweet hostess (Allison?) went out of her way to engage with us. Can't wait to return!

We went to Sunday Brunch on our first visit. It was absolutely wonderful! Started with the roasted oysters and they were perfectly cooked, great flavor and just the right amount for two people to share. I had the breakfast sandwich and my hubby had the daily special which was a rabbit eggs Benedict. Both dishes were incredible! The special was excellent, perfectly cooked rabbit patties. Different, but really good! I would recommend this place to those who are adventurous foodies. It's definitely on our repeat list!!

We enjoyed our first visit to The Blackbird and Henry and will definitely go back. My favorite bites were the pork belly appetizer and the gnocchi, but the entire meal was excellent. It's a nice, open space and the noise level was not bad, unlike so many popular places in Austin. Prices are reasonable. Our waitress, unfortunately, was a complete space cadet, but other staff seemed to pick up on that and were very attentive to us. This is a great place and I am looking forward to going back. Definitely check it out.

I can't remember the last time I had a meal that amazing! Every single thing we had was off the charts. We started with 1/2 shell oysters which were fresh and delicious, but the real wow factor came with my entree..PARISIAN GNOCCHI with smoked mushrooms, swiss chard, feta, and brown butter cream. I can't say enough about this dish, it absolutely blew me away! The pillowy soft clouds of gnocchi practically melted when they hit my tongue, I've never had anything like it! I've always been a fan of brown butter anything so it wasn't hard to love Chef Schmidt's version, amazingly light and fresh for a buttery cream sauce. Every bite was heaven n I was sad when it was gone, surprised I didn't lick the plate! Can't wait for our next trip to Austin

My friends' meals looked and tasted delicious. But I don't recommend the Egg Masala. I'm a huge fan of curry and masala dishes. But this tasted nothing like the indian masala flavor that I'm used to, nor the sauce texture I was expecting. Was more of a roasted tomato sauce, than a masala. It was a little unexciting, but probably quite healthy. I think pitas topped with a REAL masala like sauce, then topped with a couple of YOLKY eggs would be much better. But the salmon egg dish was delicious and beautiful. Breakfast sandwich was just what one would expect and love. Migas were great and what they should be. I'll come again!

great meal! my only complaint was how the special was described, and what i actually received. After our server told us about the compressed watermelon salad, i knew i had to get it. In reality, i received a salad of tuna plus (4) pieces of watermelon. I am sure this was a lot more than what we expected to pay for a salad (as my parents were treating). I am not a huge tuna fan, but forced myself to eat it so i didnt waste any food. I would suggest saying that tuna was apart of the salad, and not in fact just a watermelon salad.

I like this place. I've been a few times. The Lobster and sweet corn orzo is incredible. The Lamb meatballs are great. For dessert, the frozen pistachio parfait is not to be missed. The ambiance of the place is nice, but laid back and not too noisy. Now, my one criticism is this - stay away from the pork loin. I could have gotten a better dish at Luby's (no offense to Luby's). The salad was straight from a bag and the pork loin had the consistency and flavor of shoe leather, and there was no sauce of any kind to help choke it down.

A+ for cocktails (inventive ingredients, great balance, and presented well). B- for food (fresh ingredients, cooked well, but seriously lacking in flavor and presentation). C for service (we sat at the bar and the bartender was incredibly rude and snotty .. she seemed to hate us from the moment we sat down). I would give this place a second chance, most likely for happy hour since the cocktails were so good.

We went on Saturday night for an early dinner, first time diners, and were impressed with the layout and the vibe of the restaurant. Ample parking in the garage under the restaurant. We went for cocktails first, the list of specialty cocktails was weak, but the options were extensive so if you know what you like you should be all set. We then ordered a bottle of wine; prices were very reasonable and the list was extensive. Loved the long list of great Rosés for the summer. Food was great, everything we got was really delicious. Seafood fideo was flavorful but baby octopus were chewy. Pork belly was killer! Beef tartar was delish, flavorful and loved that the quail egg came on top in the shell. Would definitely go back again and will soon!

First time here ... Have read all the recent reviews in Austin's magazines and the newspaper, so I expected a lot. For the most part, B&H delivered! We tried the rabbit/duck pate appetizer special ... wonderful!! We followed with the seafood fideo ... the seafood was great, but the pasta was a bit dry and cold, the sauce was average; we ate the seafood and left the pasta. We shared the leg of lamb as a main course ... the BEST lamb I have ever had. Perfectly cooked and the mint/garlic mix on top was delicious! The vegetable side dish was cold and not very flavorful. We also shared the pistachio parfait for dessert ... Divine!! Overall, a good experience, some misses but mostly hits where it counted. I'll give it another try!
