A word from Blackbird and Henry
Throughout his 35 years as a chef and restaurateur, Chef Schmidt has visualized opening a comfortable, neighborhood restaurant designed for guests to gather and relax while enjoying a collection of his favorite and award-winning dishes and imbibing on carefully selected spirits, wines and ales.

"Blackbird and Henry is a place to hang out and unwind after work, gather with friends for curry and pint night, and enjoy quality food," says Chef Schmidt. "My Austin regulars from Café 909 will find a few of their favorites on the menu along with new twists and surprises that I hope will delight a wide variety of guests."

Our experience did not live up to what we had previously experienced at 909...previous restaurant this chef ran. Disappointed as we were looking for a repeat of that restaurant experience. Suggest reverting back to the 909 menue.

Above average food; nice ambience. Location is so-so (sort of a strip mall feel) and the prices were way too expensive for what you get. We spent $260 for 3 people and if I'm going to spend that much, I would go elsewhere.

Check out B&H for boyfriend's birthday dinner - went with a group of 8, and felt very well taken care of. Oysters were fantastic, lobster and sweet corn orzo was incredible... but shrimp and crab cocktail was not very good at all. For main course, I has pork loin off rotisserie menu with roasted veggies. He had steak frites. Pork was tasteless and dry, veggies lacked depth of flavor you would expect with something cooked in pan drippings. Steak frites, on the other hand, was very good - if a bit saucy. Wine list had a lot of options, but chocolate tart was a bit lackluster. Overall, the pendulum swung between fantastic and not very good. Considering the cost, they need to kick it up a notch. I'll go back, if only to enjoy the orzo again!

Excellent first time visit to Blackbird & Henry! While we were very surprised to see other patrons dressed VERY casually for a Friday night (think shorts and tshirts) we quickly forgot about it as soon as we began to eat. Superb fresh oysters that would rival anything you'd find on the coast. Braised rabbit was divine as were the sides like fresh corn with feta and cilantro. I don't think anything we might have tried would have been bad. Service was top-notch. Benjy, our waiter, was flawless with his execution and jovial to boot. The female bartender (her name escapes me) was just as great and made mean cocktails that weren't the norm. Even the sweet hostess (Allison?) went out of her way to engage with us. Can't wait to return!

We went to Sunday Brunch on our first visit. It was absolutely wonderful! Started with the roasted oysters and they were perfectly cooked, great flavor and just the right amount for two people to share. I had the breakfast sandwich and my hubby had the daily special which was a rabbit eggs Benedict. Both dishes were incredible! The special was excellent, perfectly cooked rabbit patties. Different, but really good! I would recommend this place to those who are adventurous foodies. It's definitely on our repeat list!!

We enjoyed our first visit to The Blackbird and Henry and will definitely go back. My favorite bites were the pork belly appetizer and the gnocchi, but the entire meal was excellent. It's a nice, open space and the noise level was not bad, unlike so many popular places in Austin. Prices are reasonable. Our waitress, unfortunately, was a complete space cadet, but other staff seemed to pick up on that and were very attentive to us. This is a great place and I am looking forward to going back. Definitely check it out.

I can't remember the last time I had a meal that amazing! Every single thing we had was off the charts. We started with 1/2 shell oysters which were fresh and delicious, but the real wow factor came with my entree..PARISIAN GNOCCHI with smoked mushrooms, swiss chard, feta, and brown butter cream. I can't say enough about this dish, it absolutely blew me away! The pillowy soft clouds of gnocchi practically melted when they hit my tongue, I've never had anything like it! I've always been a fan of brown butter anything so it wasn't hard to love Chef Schmidt's version, amazingly light and fresh for a buttery cream sauce. Every bite was heaven n I was sad when it was gone, surprised I didn't lick the plate! Can't wait for our next trip to Austin

My friends' meals looked and tasted delicious. But I don't recommend the Egg Masala. I'm a huge fan of curry and masala dishes. But this tasted nothing like the indian masala flavor that I'm used to, nor the sauce texture I was expecting. Was more of a roasted tomato sauce, than a masala. It was a little unexciting, but probably quite healthy. I think pitas topped with a REAL masala like sauce, then topped with a couple of YOLKY eggs would be much better. But the salmon egg dish was delicious and beautiful. Breakfast sandwich was just what one would expect and love. Migas were great and what they should be. I'll come again!

great meal! my only complaint was how the special was described, and what i actually received. After our server told us about the compressed watermelon salad, i knew i had to get it. In reality, i received a salad of tuna plus (4) pieces of watermelon. I am sure this was a lot more than what we expected to pay for a salad (as my parents were treating). I am not a huge tuna fan, but forced myself to eat it so i didnt waste any food. I would suggest saying that tuna was apart of the salad, and not in fact just a watermelon salad.

I like this place. I've been a few times. The Lobster and sweet corn orzo is incredible. The Lamb meatballs are great. For dessert, the frozen pistachio parfait is not to be missed. The ambiance of the place is nice, but laid back and not too noisy. Now, my one criticism is this - stay away from the pork loin. I could have gotten a better dish at Luby's (no offense to Luby's). The salad was straight from a bag and the pork loin had the consistency and flavor of shoe leather, and there was no sauce of any kind to help choke it down.

A+ for cocktails (inventive ingredients, great balance, and presented well). B- for food (fresh ingredients, cooked well, but seriously lacking in flavor and presentation). C for service (we sat at the bar and the bartender was incredibly rude and snotty .. she seemed to hate us from the moment we sat down). I would give this place a second chance, most likely for happy hour since the cocktails were so good.

Close to central Austin neighborhoods and the university, this restaurant is low-key and seemingly out of the way, but with serious food and fabulous service. A great bar, and two dining areas, plus tables along the sidewalk, make this a wonderful place to dine and linger.

We went on Saturday night for an early dinner, first time diners, and were impressed with the layout and the vibe of the restaurant. Ample parking in the garage under the restaurant. We went for cocktails first, the list of specialty cocktails was weak, but the options were extensive so if you know what you like you should be all set. We then ordered a bottle of wine; prices were very reasonable and the list was extensive. Loved the long list of great Rosés for the summer. Food was great, everything we got was really delicious. Seafood fideo was flavorful but baby octopus were chewy. Pork belly was killer! Beef tartar was delish, flavorful and loved that the quail egg came on top in the shell. Would definitely go back again and will soon!

Been trying to come here for awhile, and well I finally did! Putting in a reservation was easy I even had to make a change an hour before and still was easy. Our waitress was awesome (I already forgot her name but she stuck out because she has yellow hair!) she knew her menu very well, kind, and good smile. Food was perfect, good portions, and flavors. As a chef it's hard to impress and make recommendations but since my visit I've told everyone I know! I'll be coming back. Thanks again for the perfect night out!

This was our first visit, during Eat Out for Good week. The dishes are somewhat small for sharing but you definitely get to try more things that way. The one that still stands out in my mind is the Curried Prawn Kedgeree: a variety of flavors and textures paired perfectly. I look forward to returning for "Curry and a Pint" night.

First time here ... Have read all the recent reviews in Austin's magazines and the newspaper, so I expected a lot. For the most part, B&H delivered! We tried the rabbit/duck pate appetizer special ... wonderful!! We followed with the seafood fideo ... the seafood was great, but the pasta was a bit dry and cold, the sauce was average; we ate the seafood and left the pasta. We shared the leg of lamb as a main course ... the BEST lamb I have ever had. Perfectly cooked and the mint/garlic mix on top was delicious! The vegetable side dish was cold and not very flavorful. We also shared the pistachio parfait for dessert ... Divine!! Overall, a good experience, some misses but mostly hits where it counted. I'll give it another try!

We had the fish and chips appetizer with red fish which was amazing. I have always loved fish and chips and this was probably the best I have ever had. The batter was perfect. It was a mixed experience. Although we had a reservation, we were seated in the bar area which was very loud. Our server seemed inexperienced. When the restaurant called us to ask about food allergies and whether it was a special occasion (I'd never experience this before), I told them it was my birthday, the caller said "We'll let the server know this." Apparently he didn't have a clue and had to go ask if I got a free dessert. I loved my lamb, but my husband was disappointed with his rabbit. Atmosphere was nothing but LOUD. In short, I might go back again but my husband wouldn't.

This was our first visit to Blackbird and Henry. We enjoyed the food and our waitress was outstanding. The menu is eclectic and may not be for everyone, but we found several items to enjoy. The type of food is hard to categorize, so we will return and try more of the very interesting options. Parking was an issue. I found the last place in the garage, but my guest had to park in the neighborhood. This may not be the norm as the garage is large.

We read the Austin 360 article and couldn't wait to try it. However, I was disappointed from the start. They had no special coffee drinks at the bar (Irish Coffee, etc..), the restaurant was cold and it was obvious we did not need a reservation. However, we went to the bar because we were 15 minutes early for our reservation and not seated. The food was different and good, but not enough to bring us again from South Austin. We shared a meal. It would not have been worth the price for 2 meals. The fish was mediocre, salad and corn dishes were good, but not great! The corn dish was overpowered by the Tarragon. Waiter very non-attentive. When he did come by, it was on his way to do something else.

The house on tap in and tonic was pleasant. The more I drank the drink the more I enjoyed it. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and highly recommend it. Parking was easy. The only negative was the manner the waiter presented himself. Rather than communicating directly with my wife and I, he chose to only recognize me in the dining experience, without ingaging her.

Following the review in Austin 360 thought we'd try it out. Was disappointed to find that the main dishes described in the review were not available. So tried the rotisserie chicken which had been raved about in the review. It was very undistinguished; just ordinary rotisserie chicken. Pork belly appetizer was very good as was the featured pistachio dessert. So beginning and end were good but main was very mediocre. Don't plan to return.

I decided to have brunch on Sunday and was happy to see 1/2 priced oysters advertised on the website! The atmosphere was pleasant, light, and bright. At billing time our oysters were not 1/2 priced. I checked the website on my phone, thinking I had made a mistake. I asked the waiter about it, he said he wondered why so many people were wanting that special because it was for dinner time, not lunch. So, I showed him the website which showed lunch times above the special. He went to talk to the owner, no luck. The owner never came to talk to me, no explanation. I'm disappointed because I liked my experience and the food up until that point. I don't think it's right to pass on costs to customers when you've created the mistake on your website.

This place has many positive aspects, but the food is just ok. Creative dishes, but was unimpressed with the flavor of many of the dishes I ate. The cocktails were outstanding and the desserts were quite good. Especially the Pistachio parfait. I feel like this place is just a bit shy of being an outstanding destination restaurant. A great way to sum this up is that I would certainly go again with a group, if I wasn't choosing the restaurant. I would not go again if I was deciding unless I heard that some changes were made.

Don't you find ut annoying when you visit a restaurant based on the menu featured online, only to discover it's different when you arrive in person... the two desserts we wanted were no longer available and that's why we chose this place. Dinner was ok, a little pricey for the portion size. Nothing on the cocktail menu was appealing at all. Not sure we'd bother returning.

After our first visit, we were looking for a good time to return and try additional dishes. We started with oysters on the half shell. Good choices, (either Gulf or colder water, at a premium). We chose the latter. Sauces are the differentiator for a restaurant, and theirs were spot on. Lovely mignonette, a pot of freshly grated horseradish and a spicy sweet one. The salads -- smoked trout and grilled romaine. Both met or exceeded expectations. The steamed mussels had bits of chorizo sprinkled through, and were excellent. The chocolate ganache tart was delicious, served with salted caramel ice cream. Last but not least, the Texan in Paris drink was a beautifully presented, extremely tasty cocktail.

We had a great lunch here and cannot wait to come back. We had lunch on a Saturday and there were plenty of tables available but I can't imagine it will be that way for long, this place is too good. Our server was delightful, she had great wine suggestions and answered all our questions in perfect detail. The grilled romaine salad was so yummy, I was sorry we had decided to share it, I wanted it all to myself. The burger was also yummy and the fries were perfection. We are looking forward to going back and trying more of the many delicious menu options. This would be an excellent place to take visiting friends, family, anyone who enjoys good food and a nice atmosphere.
