Diner Reviews
  • "It was nice to do something different. This was a fun date night! Great experience with staff and food was really great!"

  • "A friend and I tried this place for the first time during Sunday Brunch. The food was great and priced right. The service was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. For you bacon lovers, it's cooked just right and never skimped on its placement. The chocolate shake is a MUST! Made from chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla plus chocolate syrup. Can't wait to go again."

  • "My date and I loved our meal. First, we ordered the fried olives, which were to die for. Next were the beet salad and pig ear salad, which we shared and loved. Never had pig ears? It's deep fried and much like bacon, but crispier. We were pretty full by that time so we shared an order of the "fish of the day", which was flounder. The waiter had it plated for each of us and it was cooked perfectly. Each plate had the fish on fingerling potatoes and mushrooms and topped with an egg. The egg was too too runny for our taste but it set off the plate nicely."

  • "Me and my partner loved the roof top, amazing service, and excellent entrees. I was personally disappointed with the Fried Green Tomatoes covered in curled cheese sauce. However it was a memorable dinning experience ans id go back in a heart beat"

  • "Being from Jax., great food has been a scarcity until recently. Black Sheep brings a vibrant flavor and attitude to Jax that few can deny. Bravo!"

  • "We were disappointed to not find a spot on the roof terrace but had excellent service inside in the main dining room. The entrees are a bit pricey but we feel that the cost is in line with the creativity and quality of the food. Arrive early if you want to take advantage of Happy Hour. It ends at 6 PM, earlier than at other places we frequent."

  • "We have been to Black Sheep 4-5 times now and we have always had great food and service. We always get a table on the rooftop terrace and love the view and the ambiance both during the and at night. The beer/wine and cocktails selection is very good and we love the cheese/charcuterie options and the fries."

  • "This is a great restaurant located in the five points area. If you're looking for a romantic evening out or just a night out with friends this is where you want to visit. I have enjoyed everything that I have tried from the Shrimp and Grits, Wild Mushroom and blue cheese Bread Pudding, Macaroni and Cheese and Braised Beef Spareribs."

  • "Arrived at 6:45 for a 7:15 reservation. Checked in with hostess and then had a drink before our reservation. At 7:15, checked back with hostess and she had gave our table away and now it was going to be a lengthy wait. Food was delicious, but the beef short ribs were not served hot."

  • "Contemporary modern atmosphere with creative farm to table style menu with lots of good small ate choices. Would definitely come back here when back in town."

  • "The food delicious...but I don't recommend going if you're on a diet. The grits and mac and cheese are to die for. Cocktail list is amazing and the rooftop bar is a great hangout. Definitely a Jacksonville hotspot."

  • "After receiving a recommendation from a co-worker, my family chose the Black Sheep for my daughters Sweet 16 birthday dinner. In the reservation, I let them know in advance of the occassion. When arriving, the hostess was nice enough to ask who's birthday it was and said happy birthday but that was the extent of it. The service from that point forward was poor. The waiter took no notes on our dinner selections resulting in two orders coming out wrong. Since he didn't ask if everything was correct, we had to call him over. By the time the replaced order came out most had already finished their dinner. Refilled water glasses was the extent of service rendered. Sub par food and poor service is why I won't visit or recommend this to others."

  • "I took my wife to Black Sheep for her birthday and we had a great time! The food was great and the ambience was great as well. If you want a place to eat for any occasion this is definitely it. Also if you're looking for a good drinking place, just know that they have an upstairs bar on the roof! That was a great treat!"

  • "to start the evening the bartender Joseph was outstanding - he was informative about Jacksonville and recommended several items to try at dinner. but on arrival at rooftop things changed. when you don't enjoy the service [maybe the guy was having an off night], it can impact the meal which is what happened here. although the ravioli, caesar, salmon, and short ribs were all delicious, the cadence of the meal was uncomfortable."

  • "Overall the Black Sheep for an evening out was very good and I would return as a patron. My date enjoyed it as well."

  • "For a restaurant that gets everything from local farms, the experience was out of this world. The food was the best my wife and I have ever had. The rooftop dining was a wonderful atmosphere. Good bar selection, and speedy friendly service made a wonderful romantic birthday experience for my wife. Will go back again! No contest."

  • "I just found it odd that a natural food resturant only offered me soda as a non alcoholic alternative. Especially since I was inquiring on behalf of my three small children. They did not offer any kind of organic juice which I found to be disapointing."

  • "We have had both lunch and dinner at Black Sheep and both are amazing. It has become one of our favorite restaurants and a great place to have a have dinner with a group of friends."

  • "Black Sheep Restaurant is five start dining, gourmet food, and N.Y. style thinking here in Jacksonville. John Insetta does not leave anything to chance. His award winning restaurant is a gift to all of us."

  • "I have dined at Black Sheep twice so far and definitely can't wait to be able to return. Food was great and proportioned just right. Our waiter was very helpful on tasteful selections for the evening. We were happy that a roof top table was available. It was perfect for the occasion being my husbands birthday. And the overall service was very well."

  • "The desire to dine outdorrs on a roof beat out the weather, and unfortunately the broken heater did not do the job to prevent the cold from dampening the experience. Servers are nice and seem to do their best but they are busy. The dessert menu left me disappointed."

  • "Six of us dined for a special occasion and it was a wonderful evening and our waiter, Tim, did a great job taking care of us. Everyone enjoyed their meal from appetizers (Fried Green Olives, Calamari, Poutine, and Ceviche) to our entrees (Fresh Tile Fish Special, Shrimp and Grits, Cowboy Burger). We shared a couple of desserts that were equally great...and my Mojito was perfect!."

  • "The food was fantastic! I had the bass with sausage potatoes and corn on the cob. It was the best bass I have ever had. The service was pleasant and knowledgeable. The overall dining experience was outstanding. I highly recommend visiting. I am certain to return to try more of the menu!"

  • "Even though we knew the ownership was connected to Orsay (another great local restaurant) we were pleasantly surprised with our dinner to celebrate my daughter's 10th birthday at Black Sheep. It was superb in every way - from the rooftop dining with a fireplace and gas heaters to make the cool night comfortable to the service and the excellent food. Everything we tried was outstanding and the staff recognized my daughter's birthday with a complimentary dessert of her choice. We will definitely return."

  • "My friends/ family and I take my puppy to brunch every Sunday and it can be hard to find a pet friendly restaurant. Black Sheep has great, scenic outdoor seating downstairs and on their rooftop bar that accommodates all of our needs. They always bring Taylor water in a nice doggie bowl, too! Food and service are always outstanding and Black Sheep has become our Sunday Brunch tradition! Highly recommend for any occasion."

  • "First timer and we enjoyed. We had reservations for 730pm Saturday and arrived on time but our table was not ready. We enjoyed a drink upstairs while waiting for our table and after 30 mins our table became available. In the meantime the manager apologized and topped off our wines. The waiter was very good, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was fun. We will definitely return. The much talked about poutine is mouth watering but extremely heavy so be careful. I suggest you share. The short ribs equally delicious, and the blue cheese bread pudding is to die for. Enjoy!"

  • "The brunch cocktails were fabulous. I had the Heavens Gate, a prosseco based drink with blueberry and cucumber infused St. Germaine. They have Intuition Jon Boat on tap, so of course the hubby was happy. We split the poutine and fried green tomatoes with my parents for appetizers. As the server said, "it was a delicious mess". This crew really knows their way around a potato. The fries were sweet, crunchy perfection, and what mad genius would come up with short ribs in gravy as a topping? The tomatoes were good, but not our favorite version. The slices were a bit too thick, so they took too long to fry, resulting in a mushy middle. For entrees, a round of pastrami hash, eggs and bacon, and shrimp and grits were ordered. All were wonderful."

  • "This was my 2nd experience with The Black Sheep and my first dinner there. A dear friend took me for brunch a few Sundays ago and I had a superb experience. It was such that I made reservations for a special event later the following month. I had a last minute change of plans, having to add a member to my party and there was no issue at all to accomodate the extra person. Dinner was as fabulous as brunch. I am anxious to try the roof top club at this location as soon as I get decent weather on a weekend. I cannot express the overall experience at this establishment. All I can recommend is to NOT take my word for it and find out yourself."

  • "This was our first visit to black sheep and we really enjoyed it. The beet salad was wonderful and my husband really liked his Caesar salad. The salami and soft cheese plate was perfect. It has a small serving of the most delicious honey on it. I actually had a few bites of the honey straight from the little serving spoon :). We will definitely go again. My two favorite aspects of black sheep are that they buy and use local farms so you know exactly where your food came from and that they are making everything right there. The overwhelming taste in each dish we tried was "fresh"."

  • "This was my second visit and I was once again really pleased. All appetizers and dinners ordered were shared and enjoyed by all. The service is very friendly and the rooftop bar is great"

  • "Booked this restaurant based on Trip Advisor reviews. We arrived for out 5:45 reservation and were seated immediately. Our server, Stephanie was great, engaging and personable without being intrusive. The food was innovative and flavorful. This will rank as one of our top dining experiences."

  • "Our visit to the Black Sheep was extremely memorable. From the professional service to the locally sourced and expertly prepared food, we were delighted from beginning to end. We dine out at least 2x per week, and this is one of the best meals we have had in the last two years. We're typically somewhat controlling about what we order, but here we trusted our server to recommend our drinks and three courses. She did not steer us wrong - highlights were our entrees of shrimp and grits, and short ribs with bread pudding. Short ribs were tender and flavorful - exactly why anyone would order short ribs, and the bread pudding amazing. Try it even if you don't like bleu cheese. Last, the pecan pie with brandy ice cream. Perfect."

  • "Treated my sister to dinner here before going to see War Horse at Times Union. Ate in the main room. Table very close to tables on each side. Could hear complete conversations at both tables. Felt entire room rather noisy. Would have enjoyed a frozen drink while waiting for our food, but none available. Sister had a Capt. Morgan w/ coke and said it was good. Was told their water purifier on the fritz so they came w/ a large bottle of commercial bottled water and left it on our table. Didn't charge for the water and we liked having it nearby to fill our own glasses Service and food good. A little pricey for the serving sizes."
