A word from Black Rabbit Restaurant & Bar
Located in Edgefield's main lodge, the Black Rabbit is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fantastic murals tracing the history of Edgefield and the Columbia River Gorge line the walls and intimate booths encourage you to linger over a fine meal. Guests can choose from an innovative menu of Northwest cuisine and traditional favorites, as well as an expansive list of regional and international wines.

As of 2013, the Black Rabbit kitchen is run by executive chef Kenny Giambalvo, previously of Portland’s highly acclaimed Pazzo and Bluehour restaurants. Giambalvo will collaborate with Edgefield’s onsite winery, distillery and brewery both in his menus and for special events. The kitchen uses seasonal ingredients from Edgefield's own gardens, grown using organic methods.

  • "Went for my wife's birthday. Jason, our server, made the whole evening special. The food was mostly great. My wife had the waygu beef and was a little disappointed. Not as tender or flavorful as she expected. Pretty chewy. But she had never had it and wanted to see what all the hype was about. She also had the beet terrine and it was amazing. She almost had to fight me to get her share. They put a candle on the plate. She got a kick out of that. Barley soup was good. I love barley soup. We had a hummingbird cake and the salted caramel chocolate cake for dessert. Oh my! Would be perfect for a Just Dessert outing. On the whole a great experience. We intend to return. Thanks Jason for making it so much fun."

  • "We have lived in the area of McMenamins Edgefield for almost 8 years, and have been to the Power Station on many occasions but this was our first visit to the Black Rabbit. We booked through Open Table and I did note it was our wedding anniversary but no mention of this was made by anybody. Our server was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, even bringing me a sample of wine to try after I had chosen another. I really enjoyed the Blue Lake Green Bean & Mushroom Salad. I had the steak and it was flavorful but probably a touch overdone with "no pink" when I had asked for medium. This being touted as McMenamins fine dining experience I was a little disappointed to see other patrons very casually dressed."

  • "McMenamin's knows how to charm it up, and this place is no exception. Food could have been better. The steak and eggs scramble special was reportedly pretty bland. My grilled cheese was good with some interesting flavors of the butternut squash. Another companion had the black rabbit burger and liked it quite well. The humming bird cake was yummy, like an Italian wedding cake almost with pineapple curd filling and banana cream frosting. I had the salted caramel torte and it was sweet, salty, rich and quite good. Good cup of coffee too. Service was a little spotty, but friendly for sure. Will definitely go again, even though it was quite spendy for lunch--95 bucks for four, no alcohol, so with the tip, pretty expensive for what we got."

  • "My wife and I met with freinds for dinner. It was our first time at the Edgefield location. There is a lot to see just like at many of the McMinnamin restaraunts. The food at the Black Rabbit was good. The wait staff were nice and friendly. The food was very good. The reason I gave the rating of fair for service is that we were chatting for some time afer we were done eating and we were not asked if we wanted any thing else to drink (water or other)."

  • "We were at the Edgefield property collecting the stamps in our McMenamin's passport killing time before dinner. I also surprised my girlfriend by proposing to her right before dinner. The hostess noticed and congratulated us, and word made it around and several people came by the table to congratulate us and our waiter (who was billed as "our best" by the hostess) absolutely waited on us hand and foot and congratulated us several times, but I believe he does this for all his tables, he truly was a great server. Amazing food, top notch local wine and over the top service took an already special night and cranked it to 11. We have never been disappointed at any McMenamin's property but Black Rabbit was five stars all the way."

  • "We enjoyed our meal here very much, but for a couple of things: first, it took an extraordinarily long time for our order to be taken after we were given menus. Once she showed up, our server was very friendly, yet professional, but she seemed to visit our table very seldom. I don't recall that she even checked on us after our food was delivered, and I had to ask someone else for a refill on my coffee, as it was never offered by anyone. Also, my husband found a substantial chunk of eggshell in his Eggs Norwegian, for which the manager apologized profusely, but no other compensation was offered or made. All that aside, the food was excellent and the coffee very good. We'll probably go again, and hope for better service the next time around."

We didn't have the time available to travel any great distance and this local gem (McMenamin's Edgefield) offered the perfect "world away" feel. We had a wonderful dinner and our wait staff was friendly and helpful in putting together exactly what we wanted. The offer we enjoyed included our room, a voucher for dinner and breakfast, a bottle of champagne and two flutes. The Valentine's Day Romantic package was perfect!"

  • "We were at the Black Rabbit for dinner. I ordered the 10 hr. lamb. It was fair. It was very tender but it had a strong taste or flavor for being lamb and the cabbage looked and tasted like it had been also cooked for 10 hrs. We raise lamb so I am very familiar with the very mild flavor. It was a little disappointing, I couldn't finish it. Thank you."

  • "Go here quite a bit. This is my girlfriend and my favorite venue in Portland. Me Enjoy there spirits and festive aosphere. There is so much to do and everyone is so friendly. I particularly favor the little red shed. Nothing better then kicking back there with the girlfriend and friends enjoying a cigar and whiskey or IPA. Great place to meet new friends. If your up to it stay the night. The bath house style bathrooms have deep claw foot tubs and make For a great romantic setting. The Edgefield is a great place so stay away so we can enjoy it all to ourselves. :-)"

They have changed chef's since 2013 and I must say the food is even better. Lots of wonderful flavors and pairings for wine. Service was and is always great. The volume level is a bit high on a busy Saturday night, but the dim lighting and atmosphere still make it a great romantic date spot."

  • "We went here for my wife's birthday, we've always like the location, and we had our kids with us, so we knew the McMenamins vibe would be a good fit for a fancy family dinner. We arrived on time and were seated quickly. I had a bottle of sparkling waiting at the table, which was great. After being seated, we ordered some appetizers and drinks for the boys. The drinks came out quickly, after which we ordered food. The apps took ~20 minutes to arrive - which seemed odd as it was a Monday and they were not busy. We finished the apps and waited another nearly 45 minutes for our food - all the while, folks around us (who arrived later) had gotten their food. The desserts were delicious, and the server was nice, but the wait was egregious."

  • "The Black Rabbit is great for a romantic dinner out, or a big brunch with friends. Excellent menu, quality food, great service. Highly recommend the tuna. It is prepared to perfection by their Hawaiian chef, and seriously, if you like sesame incrusted, seared tuna that is wonderfully fresh and pink in the middle, this is the place to order it. McMenamin's Pinot Gris is an excellent pairing with it. The wild boar on the menu was excellent too. For breakfast or brunch, all of the "benedict" style eggs are done beautifully, the home style potatos are yummy and seasoned wonderfully, and the Bloody Mary's - complete with a crunchy stick of bacon as a garnish - are the best."

Open Table didn't show many other Christmas Day openings, so we made a later reservation and had a very good dinner. Service was friendly and prompt, the Edgefield Syrah was specially priced, and the food off the Christmas Day special menu was very good and nicely presented. This dining room has a nice balance of noise level, iconic Mc Men/s ambience/decor, and buzz."

  • "I loved the fact that this bar & restaurant is in a restored building and covered with charming art and décor. It's certainly not the average bar with boring food options and average taste. I had the truffled blt and a buttered rum drink which included a spiced rum. It's clear the food is locally sourced and the chef took some time with the menu creation and food prep. The service was a little slow but the waitress was pleasant and friendly so if you're not in a rush this is a perfect treat. After the food, you can explore the grounds for any place that has its own winery and distillery on top of homegrown brewed beer is alright with me. I'll be back to try some other treats."

The service or at least our server for dinner was not good. She seemed as if she didn't really know what to do or when to do it. Like she had never worked in a nice eating establishment before. The breakfast service by comparison was outstanding!"

Mom lives in a retirement home, small apartment, where cooking is impossible. And so the Black Rabbit Restaurant has met the needs of those of us who can meet in Portland. We love the beautiful setting in which the restaurant is housed. My mother, husband and I have eaten there for the past three years and have loved the food and the ambience of the restaurant. From the moment that we come to the restaurant we are treated as if we are very special. The reception and wait staff are exceptional. Exceptional!"

  • "Thanksgiving dinner....The menu offered a good number of choices. The wine list was diverse and priced fairly. The dining room nicely decorated and appropriate for the holiday. Our food was excellent, but all this was spoiled by a waitress that didn't know the menu and behaved as if she had never been trained. We practically had to beg to get our bottle of wine. It arrived when our salads were served. My husband had requested a glass of red wine with his entree of wild boar. When it didn't arrive we, once again, flagged down the waitress. She snapped that she could only do things as fast as others served. Although our food was outstanding, our dining experience was marred by inadequate, less than pleasant service."

When I arrived, we opted to wait a few minutes past our reservation spot to secure a table by the window. We knew we'd enjoy the experience with just a bit more 'light' given that the rainy season is now upon us. Our waiter took impeccable care of us, the meal was superb, and the sun broke from behind the clouds as we dined on all things scrumptious. If you're looking for quality dining in a serene atmosphere, this dining room has it in 'spades.' GM"
