A word from Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.
>
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.

Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was okay. I met a friend for dinner one night and I was excited to try this place. Overall, I wasn't super impressed. They have a great dessert- the warm cookie pie. This was amazing. The server was not confident and seemed like maybe he lost his job and was waiting tables to bring some income in, so we took it very easy on him. I would feel bad for him if he had other guests that would not be as patient with him. The way the restaurant is set up, is a little hard to have privacy. I probably would not come here again on my own, unless someone really loved it and wanted to try it. "

  • "We went there for my daughter's birthday. We had a nice time. We were not rushed. We took our time and ate leisurely. The food was good. Omelets made to order. Lots of great pastries."

  • "This was our second time back for the brunch buffet. The omelets were great as usual but the other selections were a little more sparse this time and some dishes were a bit picked over by about 1 pm. But it is a nice place for brunch and you can sit outside. Our server was great."

  • "Great local brunch. Service is efficient and nice. Selection is good. Although the restaurant has changed names over the years, the brunch is still a great destination."

  • "Great beer list and our server Tom made us feel right at home. We had met him once before and he remembered."

  • "Better service than our last visit. Perhaps they are getting the right people as their servers."

  • "Our first visit to this restaurant was excellent, so we had high hopes for our return. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at all. We ordered salmon and a burger. The salmon wasn't fully cooked, and the burger (ordered medium well) was closer to medium rare. While our waiter was generally very good, he disappeared during the meal, so we couldn't tell him about the problems (not to mention the fact that he forgot to bring bread and also didn't refill our water glasses until we had finished eating). When told that the salmon was still in need of cooking, he said he would tell the kitchen. We never heard another word and, although the manager was nearby at one point, she didn't seem to know of our problem. Overall, a disappointing return."

  • "We went for lunch on a Saturday and absolutely loved everything about it! Our waiter, George, was fantastic! The food and atmosphere awesome! Plenty of beer and wine selections. Great martinis! The prices are very reasonable. Will definitely go back. Can't wait!"

  • "We were dining out with a a group of six. Most of us had burgers, nothing fancy. Thats a perfect description of this restaurant. Nothing fancy. Its fine if you are not expecting much. Ok at best. Service at the bar was horrible. Considered making my own drink. Service at the table was much better. Food was fine. To conclude, this restaurant is a fine place to go if you are with friends and you are just having fun with them. Don't go here expecting gourmet food!"

  • "We've been here for dinner a few times and have always enjoyed the food. This is our first brunch. Very solid for the price ($19.95): omelette bar, carving station (two kinds of meat), cold items (smoked salmon, shrimp, salads, fruits), breakfast items (eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles, potatoes), and entree (a lamb dish, rice, pasta). What first brought us to Black Powder was the good craft beer selection. I have two "complaints" about the beers: (a) the online tap list is not current. Given so many options in the area with good food and beer, our restaurant choice is often dictated by the tap list. (b) Everything I've ordered has arrived in a pint glass. It's fine sometimes, but in other cases, that could really mess with a beer's character."

  • "Brunch food offering was good - not great....some of the items offered were too soggy (eggs and home fried potatoes). Dessert selection was a bit light. Omelets were great, as was the fruit selection. Waiter (Mick) was fantastic."

  • "The food was good I was not disappointed. The service needs improvement. I had a salad before my meal and was still eating it when I was served my entre. The right thing to do would have been to wait until I was finished with my salad then remove my plate and serve the entree's. I ordered a burger to bring home to my son and it was brought to us before we were finished eating. Needless to say by the time we arrived home it was cold. I would recommend going, the food was good, they just need to improve their service."

  • "We went to the Black Powder with friends who had found it on the internet. Wow....were we surprised, Limited menu with a couple drink and dinner specials. I love a menu that is limited and does what they do well! Cannot wait until the weather breaks and the patio opens. Very knowledgeable wait staff and handicap accessible! Don't miss the roasted brussel sprouts...yes I said brussel sprouts! Catfish yummy and such fresh salads!"

  • "Really enjoyed our first-time visit here. Good food reasonably priced, and good service, even on a busy Sat night. Look forward to going back!"

  • "the food was horrible and the service was substandard. We ordered the veal burger, salmon Reuben, pot pie, kids salmon, and cedar plank salmon. For appetizers, we had the calamari, a wine/cheese/ mushroom dip and chicken wings. The salmon in all 3 meals was incredibly salty. It was almost uneatable. Similarly, the pot pie was also salty beyond eat-ability and was more like soup with dough on top. The dip was saturated in wine, as opposed to having a taste of wine. The only things that were acceptable were the chicken wings, calamari and the veal burger. Also, the service was substandard. She did not get us water and missed empty drinks several times. She gave us an attitude of disbelief when we complained."

  • "This is a Beautifully renovated Valley Forge Historic Building. The Brunch is very tasty. Worth the trip, near Valley Forge Park, a good day out."

  • "We hadn't been here for many years, and the change to the Black Powder Tavern is a big improvement. The food was excellent, as was the service, etc. The new menu is also a big improvement. We will definitely return."

  • "Have been here for brunch a couple of times now, food variety is good and delicious. You get a Bloody Mary or mimosa with brunch. They also have an excellent selection of microbrews from all over the USA."

  • "We had a good meal at Black Powder. The prices have been raised since they rennovated. The menu is not as larger. I used to really like Winbere's. I was not as impressed with Black Powder."

  • "The food was very good and our waiter was friendly and nice and attentive. New decor and atmoshere is great. The only problem was that it took at least 30+ minutes for our lunch to arrive. We had a 1:00pm reservation on a Thursday, so perhaps the kitchen staff was less, but that was too much time to wait to be served. I really hope they improve that issue as I like the restaurant very much otherwise and it is close to my office so good for business lunches."

  • "My friend and came here for dinner and both ordered the specials, pork with portabello sauce, mashed potatoes and friend eggplant. The pork was dry, the eggplant was awful but the potatoes were the best thing on the plate. It was all very salty. I would try this place again, only if they got rid of the loud music, which impedes conversation. We asked twice if they would turn it down but it never got low enough. At 6:00 pm, they don't need loud music at dinnertime."

  • "This was our first time at Black Powder Tavern, but it definitely won't be our last. As the only vegetarian in a family of omnivores, I generally have to settle for uninspired fare. Here, though, the black bean burger and bean and barley soup were delicious. My son had a steak cooked just the way he liked it, while my usually tough-to-please husband raved about his burger. We all appreciated that we could substitute sides. Perhaps even more important than the food, though, was the quick, efficient yet attentive service. Our extremely competent waitress, Kristi, met special requests with smiles and ably answered all of our questions. Fabulous!"

  • "The food was great. The cheesy devils on horseback were an interesting start. The Cajun Mac & Cheese was delicious and the fish and chips was some of the best I've had recently. The ambiance was a little odd but not bad, kind of sports bar meets fine dining with 80's music. Our server, however, was not great. He didn't return to see how our food was and I went most of the meal without something to drink. I had intended to get dessert but after waiting 10-15 minutes for him to come around I gave up and we had to ask another server to get him so we could get our check and leave. We will go back and just hope for a different server."

  • "We were a table of four with out drinks most of our meal. My glass of wine came with soap in it. My entree was not what the menu described, it wasn't even close. The pot pie tasted like a freezer bought pot pie tossed in the microwave. Two of the three desserts were inedible. The vanilla milkshake was delicious. Our server was very unfocused and seemed extremely nervous and was very slow. We will go elsewhere."

  • "We dined at the Black Powder Tavern on a Thursday night, it was a wonderful experience in terms of food, atmosphere and service. There are lots of booths for a more private dining experience and they're very comfortable. Our waitress was in training, so she was accompanied by a more seasoned waiter. They were both friendly, attentive and funny - it was a pleasure to speak with them throughout our meal. I highly recommend the tavern nachos - a delicious appetizer to split that doesn't leave you too full to enjoy your dinner."

  • "First time under the new name; rarely had dinner there previously, mostly Winberie's brunch. Newspaper said most of the staff stayed, but it seemed many were very new. But VERY attentive & checked with us just the right amount of times. Busboy's were prompt & courteous too. My steak sandwich on a pretzel roll was good but messy. Manager...or someone with a badge and oxford who stopped by...just laughed and asked if I needed a bib. Uh, no thanks. He said this was better than the potato rolls they used. OK...but 1/2 way through it was too messy and just not enjoyable. Husband's chicken pot pie was one of the best he ever had."

  • "The brunch is buffet style and is good. Not great but, good. The selections on the buffet are evenly split between breakfast and lunch selections. The omelet bar was good also. There was a nice selection of fruits and desserts an a large mimosa was included."

  • "For a casual dinner, the Black Powder Tavern is excellent! The menu was much different than anything I have seen for the such reasonable prices. The hostess immediately seated us with a smile (we had reservations) and our server, Kelly, was warm and answered all of our questions with no problem. She checked on us just the right amount of times and our water glass was never empty. I highly recommend the Pastrami Smoked Salmon Reuben. We'll be back!"

  • "We have been regulars at Winberie's for about ten years or so and have always enjoyed the food and service. Management has always been and still is very attentive. The change to Black Powder Tavern is a welcome update and we are enjoying the new menu. Our current favorites are the Roast Pork Sandwich and Salmon Salad. I am dying to try the dates stuffed with Gorgonzola, wrapped in bacon; perhaps next time."

  • "enjoyed all the food. only improvement would be the portion size of the nacho appetizer and price. the appetizer is very very delicious and would have wanted more. they could double the size and increase price $2 it would be acceptable. present portion smaller than palm of your hand. make it bigger people will order more!"
