A word from Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.

It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.

Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

  • Good food in charming but loud setting

Every table was full and it was really hopping - loud and busy in the front room, more manageable in the back. The special we ordered (blackened tilapia, risotto, and spinach) was perfectly fine, just nothing too spectacular. Overhead lighting was too bright, but otherwise it's an attractive and enjoyable atmosphere.

Started with complimentary valet parking, which was nice, considering the place was packed. The hostess was absolutely put out by our arrival and gave us the table that's pretty much in the waiting area. People waiting to be seated could have moved their chairs 12 inches and they'd have been at our table. It was also cold in that spot because the door kept opening with diner arrivals and departures. The waiter was very attentive. Almost too much so. He talked my husband out of the appetizer that he really wanted and into the Traditional Mussels. Bland is the only way to describe them. My appetizer was brilliant! Garlic bread with crab dip and fontina cheese. But it's not even a regular menu item. It was a special that night. I ordered a Margarita that was akin to a warhead candy. If you've ever had one, you know the sour pucker they induce. Margarita had the same effect. SO SOUR! When I mentioned it to the waiter he said, "Yeah, I've tried to tell them about that." OK he knew they were bad yet let me order one, but talked my husband out of an appetizer. Before we were finished the appetizers, the enteees were brought out. My husband mentioned this to our waiter and he said, "Well she's almost done hers." This whole time, the waiter and the manager are stopping by the table asking us how everything was. It felt like they were rushing us. Then with the overlapping courses, we DEFINITELY felt rushed. My husband ordered the special: seared ahi tuna over rice. What came out looked like a piece of undercooked chicken breast. And it was served over a bed of Uncle Bens rice. My husband sent it back. They took it off the bill, which was nice but still annoying that he didn't eat an entrée after getting a not so great appetizer. I got the Cajun Mac n Cheese. On their website they show it baked and served in a cast iron skillet. It came in a white bowl. Not baked, therefore disappointing, but still not bad. Overall we felt rushed through a mediocre meal.

The menu wasn't exciting but it had solid selections. The fish and chips was very good. The fish itself was flaky and the batter was crispy; best fish and chips we've had in a while. The dates were very good as well but only 5 for the appetizer which seemed like too few. I would've liked to see something different for desserts, which were okay but not great. Mussels were excellent. Pricey but good for once in a while. Wine list was also very good.

I have been to General Warren Inn, Malvern and I wish you could have built a nice big fireplace for Black Powder Tavern like Warren Inn . That being said, My wife and I live in Chesterbrook We tried for 1st time your restaurant and plan to be back when my brother visits us for the Christmas holidays from South Carolina. You have a good menu with many selections. My wife and I have traveled Europe many times and we are very particular where we eat and and the proper foods we like to eat. I do not really care about what other people write as far as reviews. My review is the one that matters.

Have been to Black Powder Tavern before. The food is good and the ambiance is wonderful But....the service was once again bad. The waitress did not come to the table for 15 min. Once there was abrupt and did not refill drinks. Unfortunate as this is a nice restaurant.

My party of 6 had brunch on 10/19/14, reservations for 12:54pm. We were seated promptly and our server, Yolanda, was friendly and attentive. The brunch spread was very good. We especially enjoyed the pork wings. One of our party mentioned that the omelet from the omelet station was a bit greasy (the cook must have used too much cooking spray). Overall a very good time was had by all. We will be returning soon.

I used to frequent the previous establishment before it became The Black Powder Tavern. I was expecting much the same. But I am very happy to say that I had the best meal out that I have had in a very long time. I ordered the special of the day (Trout with butter and herbs, mashed potatoes and fresh spinach) and it was wonderful! It was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and presented with care. My friend ordered the veggie burger and sweet potatoes fries and she loved it. I stole some fries 😊 and they were terrific. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I will definitely be back.

A group of us got together for an early dinner before an event on saturday. The Tavern is a lovely old building very convenient to the Main Line, outer suburbs and our friend from Lancaster Country found it easily off the PA Turnpike. Great casual dining menu with good specials - my friend had the scallops, I had the flank steak, everyone enjoyed their dinner. Friendly and prompt waiter. They have a good wine list but we just had the house chardonnay that was good.

This was my first trip since the name/format change from Café Winberie. I had the mussels for an appetizer and, quite frankly, those with a beer or two would have been more than enough. Maybe a small side salad. The mussels came with fries. I also had the grilled chicken salad. Also very good. My client had one of the soups of the day and a salad and seemed to enjoy both. Would gladly revisit.

We were in town more for medical reasons than to find a nice restaurant. The service was a bit on the slow side, but the food was well prepared, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the prices were reasonable. A very decent place for casual dining. If we need to ever return to the area, we will eat there again.

Our third visit was better than the second, worse than the first, and they ignored our comment on the Open Table reservation about it being a special day. Also, the hostess seemed perturbed when we didn't want to be seated at the first table in the restaurant, where everyone walked by. When we were eventually reseated in the "second" dining room, we had a peaceful experience. Overall, the food was good, really very good, but not sensational. It's a good place to go on a weekend for dinner, but I wish they focused a bit more on customer service.

..sprouts, you've never tried Black Powder Tavern brussels sprouts! We've been coming to this restaurant, in its various incarnations, for many years - and it has always maintained the same excellent standard. Our particular favourites are the cedar planked salmon and the traditional mussels, but there's not much on the menu that we haven't tried and enjoyed. Service is always friendly and efficient, and on the rare occasions that something wasn't quite right, they have gone out of their way to make sure we were satisfied. And, seriously, you just HAVE to try those brussels sprouts...!

We went here for their Philly Beer Week Special, which was a 4 3 oz. beer flight for $5. We had to inform our waiter about the special and he had to check with someone else to confirm it. I had it pulled up on Facebook in case we had a problem. Our food was very good. The beer was good, but we are not certain the waiter knew which ones were which. There were no notes, labels, etc. for the flights. Also, as we were leaving, we heard another waiter list the daily specials and bring bread to his table. We received neither! We won't be back.
