A word from Black Powder Tavern
Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution.
It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence.

Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. We invite you to experience the small and large plates, craft beers and revolutionary hospitality that is Black Powder Tavern.

  • "..sprouts, you've never tried Black Powder Tavern brussels sprouts! We've been coming to this restaurant, in its various incarnations, for many years - and it has always maintained the same excellent standard. Our particular favourites are the cedar planked salmon and the traditional mussels, but there's not much on the menu that we haven't tried and enjoyed. Service is always friendly and efficient, and on the rare occasions that something wasn't quite right, they have gone out of their way to make sure we were satisfied. And, seriously, you just HAVE to try those brussels sprouts...!"

  • "My husband and I stumbled upon this resturaunt at the end of our 4th of July weekend. We thought we were headed to JB Winberries......and here the restuarant had changed. Was a nice surprise! Menu much more unique than your "normal chains". Very varied. Nice beer and drink selection. What was really outstanding was service. Very friendly, very experienced."

The food and drinks were perfect. We had a much-needed great night out. Usually, I feel like a server can make or break a night out and our expectations were exceeded.   • "What a nice place. The atmosphere was cozy, even though the main dining area we waited in was large. The food was very good (menu was typical of this sort of place based on my experience), was fresh, cooked properly, and the coffee was very good. Also, no screaming kids or crowded tables - not that we don't like kids. Overall an enjoyable night out for my friend and me."

  • "We went here for their Philly Beer Week Special, which was a 4 3 oz. beer flight for $5. We had to inform our waiter about the special and he had to check with someone else to confirm it. I had it pulled up on Facebook in case we had a problem. Our food was very good. The beer was good, but we are not certain the waiter knew which ones were which. There were no notes, labels, etc. for the flights. Also, as we were leaving, we heard another waiter list the daily specials and bring bread to his table. We received neither! We won't be back."

We've been so impressed by the diverse craft menu and extensive beer, wine, and spirits lists. And the desserts are to die for! If you're in the mood for unique twists on standard tavern fare and a bar list to please any palate, then look no further!"

  • "I am familiar with the restaurant pre-black powder. The decor is not creative and could use plants, or some additional touches. While the food is ok, the service went from bad to non existent. The staff seem irritated to be working, and untrained. It's a shame they took a restaurant that had consistent food, moderate price, professional staff, and acceptable decor, and turned it into a glorified bar with no atmosphere or service. I would not reccomend."

  • "The Black Powder Tavern was a great find. We are from out of town and were picking up our daughter from college. She looked up some restaurants on the internet and found this one. The menu and pictures on the website were intriguing. I had to change our reservation time and the young man who answered couldn't have been any nicer. When we arrived the place looked charming. We were greeted warmly at the door and our table was ready immediately. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. When my dinner came out, my side was incorrect but was immediately corrected and complimentary. The food was outstanding. We will definitely visit the Black Powder Tavern again and again!"

  • "After seeing this restaurant on OpenTable and being intrigued by the menu, my husband and I went for my birthday, which was about two months ago. Since then we've been back three times -- we love this place. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is friendly, and the food is great. Our favorite dishes include the onion soup dumplings, the tavern nachos, the southwest chicken burger, and the pastrami smoked salmon reuben. I've never been to another restaurant with "adult" (alcoholic) milk shakes, and they are good. We have yet to experience a bad or even mediocre meal here. Highly recommended."

  • "Searched "historic restaurant near Valley Forge." Before dinner, we had drinks in the bar. My husband had two beers that were recommended by Tom, the friendly waiter and the tavern's beer specialist. Both were excellent recommendations. I tried two specialty cocktails, one made with maple syrup...delicious! We retained Tom as our server for dinner. We ordered the traditional mussel appetizer (with Tom's recommendation), the barley soup, and we both chose pasta for dinner, me, the mac and cheese and my husband, the pasta with three meats in a bolognese sauce. Everything was exceptional and we wouldn't allow them to remove the broth from the mussels and ordered extra bread to mop it up. We think the the Tavern is a 5 star winner!"

  • "We found Black Powder Tavern and were pleasantly surprised. My wife and I took our 11 and 9 year old boys. The kids menu had great selections and the adult menu had lots of good choices. I had the fish and chips. It was a very tasty cod a generous portion. The fries were yummy too. My wife split her chicken sandwich with my 11 year old who shared his salmon from the kids menu. The server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. When I try a new restaurant, I like to get ideas from the server. Mick did a great job of explaining the beers he really liked and why and he did the same with the dishes I asked him about. Everyone really enjoyed their meal and we'll definitely go back."

  • "Our first visit to this restaurant was excellent, so we had high hopes for our return. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at all. We ordered salmon and a burger. The salmon wasn't fully cooked, and the burger (ordered medium well) was closer to medium rare. While our waiter was generally very good, he disappeared during the meal, so we couldn't tell him about the problems (not to mention the fact that he forgot to bring bread and also didn't refill our water glasses until we had finished eating). When told that the salmon was still in need of cooking, he said he would tell the kitchen. We never heard another word and, although the manager was nearby at one point, she didn't seem to know of our problem. Overall, a disappointing return."

  • "We were dining out with a a group of six. Most of us had burgers, nothing fancy. Thats a perfect description of this restaurant. Nothing fancy. Its fine if you are not expecting much. Ok at best. Service at the bar was horrible. Considered making my own drink. Service at the table was much better. Food was fine. To conclude, this restaurant is a fine place to go if you are with friends and you are just having fun with them. Don't go here expecting gourmet food!"

  • "The food was good I was not disappointed. The service needs improvement. I had a salad before my meal and was still eating it when I was served my entre. The right thing to do would have been to wait until I was finished with my salad then remove my plate and serve the entree's. I ordered a burger to bring home to my son and it was brought to us before we were finished eating. Needless to say by the time we arrived home it was cold. I would recommend going, the food was good, they just need to improve their service."

  • "We've been here for dinner a few times and have always enjoyed the food. This is our first brunch. Very solid for the price ($19.95): omelette bar, carving station (two kinds of meat), cold items (smoked salmon, shrimp, salads, fruits), breakfast items (eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles, potatoes), and entree (a lamb dish, rice, pasta). What first brought us to Black Powder was the good craft beer selection. I have two "complaints" about the beers: (a) the online tap list is not current. Given so many options in the area with good food and beer, our restaurant choice is often dictated by the tap list. (b) Everything I've ordered has arrived in a pint glass. It's fine sometimes, but in other cases, that could really mess with a beer's character."

  • "We went to the Black Powder with friends who had found it on the internet. Wow....were we surprised, Limited menu with a couple drink and dinner specials. I love a menu that is limited and does what they do well! Cannot wait until the weather breaks and the patio opens. Very knowledgeable wait staff and handicap accessible! Don't miss the roasted brussel sprouts...yes I said brussel sprouts! Catfish yummy and such fresh salads!"

  • "the food was horrible and the service was substandard. We ordered the veal burger, salmon Reuben, pot pie, kids salmon, and cedar plank salmon. For appetizers, we had the calamari, a wine/cheese/ mushroom dip and chicken wings. The salmon in all 3 meals was incredibly salty. It was almost uneatable. Similarly, the pot pie was also salty beyond eat-ability and was more like soup with dough on top. The dip was saturated in wine, as opposed to having a taste of wine. The only things that were acceptable were the chicken wings, calamari and the veal burger. Also, the service was substandard. She did not get us water and missed empty drinks several times. She gave us an attitude of disbelief when we complained."

  • "Went there for appetizers after work one day. Despite the fact the rest of the place was empty, we had to sit at the bar at a high top even though my very pregnant wife asked if we could sit at the booth next to the bar. We were told if we wanted the deals, we'd have to sit in the bar. We are easy going, but thought this was pretty arbitrary. The "nachos" were house made chips with nacho toppings... They were okay. Kind of odd texture and super small portion. The Asian wings we got were really delicious. They were crispy and sticky and awesome. Decent beer selection and the decor was cool--but that's to two nerdy teachers. The service was lack luster and when the happy hour/night crowd came, we were lost in the shuffle."

  • "The food was okay. I met a friend for dinner one night and I was excited to try this place. Overall, I wasn't super impressed. They have a great dessert- the warm cookie pie. This was amazing. The server was not confident and seemed like maybe he lost his job and was waiting tables to bring some income in, so we took it very easy on him. I would feel bad for him if he had other guests that would not be as patient with him. The way the restaurant is set up, is a little hard to have privacy. I probably would not come here again on my own, unless someone really loved it and wanted to try it. "
