  • Special Events & Promotions: The Black Olive restaurant opened its doors in 1997 after renovating a Fell’s Point row house that had been vacant for years. Over the years the restaurant grew and became a Baltimore institution. In the early days of the restaurant, on the back patio, where the view of the Inner Harbor and Harbor East reminded one of the histories of a city, a dream was hatched.
In the summer of 2010 that dream becomes a reality. The new Inn at the Black Olive, located on Caroline Street behind the original Black Olive restaurant will open its doors for business.
The Inn will have a market selling organic and sustainable fresh fruits and vegetables, wine, fresh seafood, foods prepared in the Black Olive kitchen, backed goods from a new bakery, suites for guests to spend the night with us, a rooftop café and wine bar that can be used for private events.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were disappointed with the service. We had reservations, but they could not seat us for 20 minutes. We sat at the bar for 15 minutes before we were asked what drinks we would like. Once at the table, the service was not stellar either. We felt as if our patronage was not appreciated. We will not be going back."

  • "Our second time at the Black Olive and it once again did not disappoint. The fish - Mediterranean sea bass - was fabulous - and the surprise of the day was the vegetable of the day the most delicious beets (and I am not a beets fan) I have ever eaten. A great dinner and excellent service."

  • "I have been going to the Black Olive for 15 years and it is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. I have been there at least 30 times. The waitress was really terrible. She was pushy, rude and unhelpful. Her goal seemed to be to make us leave. She complained that we were discussing business at lunch. I ordede two very simple dishes--the Greek salad and the sardines . The portion of the salad was very smal, the vegetables were old and soft and the feta cheese was flavorless--not the pungent, crumbly kind they used to serve. I love fresh sardines. These were dries out and odd tasting, difficult to eat. Maybe they were from a can. Hoping this was an exception. Otherwise the Black Olive is going to disappear. Maybe thechef was on vacation?"

  • "We used to visit Black Olive for special occassions when we lived in Baltimore. Returned there while driving back to Philly. The food remains outstanding. Unlike the reviews on yelp, the service was extremely attentive. Best fish we have had in a long time. Kudos to the Black Olive for maintaining their standards."

  • "Black Olive is a phenomenal dining experience that is now a must for us when in Baltimore area. The inside ambience is lovely and back patio is also a special spot. We enjoyed fresh incredibly tasty dips and a giant sampler of grilled seafood delights for shared appetizers and chose our entries after viewing fresh fish of the day displayed on ice. The white wine from Greece that was recommended by our server complimented the meal perfectly. My family (ages 59 to 14) loved everything about it both times. Great spot for romantic date or group of friends."

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times and this time will be our last. We had to wait well over an hour to receive out entree. We offered a complaint to this manner which was not appropriately addressed by the on site owner/manager. The food was great and our waitress was excellent. Customer service is non existent !"

  • "This was an amazing find! Definitely worth taking the "fish tour" to see for yourself what they have on ice. All of the seafood looked fresh in the case. Service was wonderful with a very friendly, helpful waitress named Trinya. The restaurant is on a quite part of Bond Street in Fells Point just off the very busy, noisy main square and streets. It's an old townhouse with stucco and exposed beams inside and tasteful decor. We sat inside but they do have a nice-looking outdoor seating area in the back. Food was great: started with grilled stuffed calamari and then both got our own grilled whole fish. Waitress expertly filleted them at the table. All food (including hot, homemade bread) was amazing. They keep it simple and great."

  • "We were in town on our wedding anniversary and wanted someplace to celebrate over lunch. We chose The Black Olive on the recommendation of a friend and it was a wonderful choice. The quiet, intimate setting was perfect for us. The food was excellent and service was warm, personable, prompt and efficient. Made for a memorable experience!"

  • "We were at a conference at a large Inner Harbor hotel and wanted a local, quiet seafood place in walking distance. This Fells Point gem hit all of the marks. Great bar, great service and wonderful fresh seafood. Quiet outdoor seating under a grape arbor. Fish soup was super fresh, and delicious. Service was prompt but not pushy. Highly recommend it and would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "Best of Baltimore in my opinion. We loved it and will visit every time we are in town. Yes it's that good."

  • "Have eaten lunch here a number of times but this was our first dinner. The food was delicious and the service great. Wait staff was very helpful in making suggestions and explaining items. Definitely recommend."

  • "I felt uncomfortable with how the people acted when we entered the restaurant. My date was dressed nicely. I had a black polo tshirt and some nice jeans on. We were seated immediately but it took at least nine minutes before we got water and then we finally met the waitress. Like what are they doing in here. My mood had shifted negatively by then. The waitress was nice. We both ordered fish. My dates fish was excellent. Mine was ok. There was not a good food with the fish. Lemon and apples mostly. I had to hit up a royal farm for fries on the way home. If u get the 30 dollar fish, u may need to buy a side. If your not rich and the right color it's questionable if you will feel welcome or not."

  • "We enjoyed another delicious dinner at the Black Olive. Food was excellent; however, our greeter seemed to not have our reservation in his book and service was not up to par. Also, temperature in front room was unnecesarily warm and sticky."

  • "Excellent, Fresh seafood choices. Fish is grilled whole and filleted at the table. The whole dining experience is relaxed and comfortable and the owner enjoys providing an overview of fresh fish choice in the area where the fish are on ice, starting with firm / oily to flaky / least oily - he enjoys his work! The Black Olive is great for those special occasions or just a relaxing, comprehensive dinner without being rushed."

  • "I love dining at The Black Olive, and have eaten here at least a dozen times. However, on this occasion, the waiter was not very skilled and my Dover Sole was served cold. Very disappointing considering it is one of the most expensive dining options in Baltimore."

  • "Wonderful service and delicious food on a quiet Thursday evening. Had crab cake small plate and sauteed St. Peter's fish, both perfectly prepared."

  • "We had the grilled octopus salad, stuffed kalamari, grilled sardines and the village salad as appetizers. Then we each had one of the fish as our entree: black fish, porgy, and the Dover sole (this one was expensive!!) They were all well prepared: moist, flavorful, with a delicious sauce. We ended with baklava, strawberry-ouzo sorbet, and carrot cake. Yummy! We had a nice chat with the owners who are very friendly. Great evening."

  • "Apps were excellent. Our main courses were well prepared; but you might want to request easy on the butter/oil if you are watching your weight. We ordered blackfish which was delicious and perfectly prepared. Unfortunately the very charming and pleasant server was unable to filet it properly and we ended up with two piles of small fish flakes and chunks instead of two filets. Really ruined the $60 fish for us. Suggestion to owner: if a fish can not properly be filleted table-side, skip the pomp and filet it in the kitchen. I'd rather have a properly presented piece of fish than a show ending in a pile of mush."

  • "This was one of those few meals when it is hard too decide which of what you ate was your favorite... was it the Octopus? the calamari? the fish? the olives? the bread? This is real fine dining at it's best, and every penny you pay is way worth it!"

  • "This is the place in Baltimore to go for fresh fish! Recommend getting the fish cooked the way the restaurant suggests."

  • "Fresh seafood, organic fruits and veggies fresh off the vine, mouth watering dishes, sums up this elegant upscale spot in Fells Point. This was the 4th time, my family and I have been here. The service was amazing. Best dishes: the Bread Pudding, (not a dessert but on the appetizers list) Sole (fish and the freshest too!!), seafood kabob, and their patented Baklava Ice Cream (freshly made). Their homemade bread is also amazing."

  • "My husband and I went for dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation and arrived on time. The host was not friendly, and seated us as if we were inconveniencing him. Wine was excellent, appetizers were pretty tasty. Unfortunately, both our main courses were sub-par. I ordered shrimp and tuna kebabs, my husband ordered lobster kebabs. The shrimp and lobster were extremely overcooked-- tough and difficult to eat. I specified that I wanted the tuna cooked to medium, and it was raw (not just pink) in the center. Both our orders came with a side of grilled vegetables that were mushy, as if they'd been cooked much earlier in the day and reheated. Overall, I didn't think this restaurant lived up to the hype."

  • "Black Olive says that seafood is their big thing and it certainly was! We went with a party of 6 and everyone enjoyed their meal. Three of us LOVED the excellent whole fish selection that was paired with black olive mashed potatoes. One guy got chicken and the other ribs and both enjoyed those items. We loved the sharing plates as well, esp the spreads and cheese. Our waitress was super, answering ALL questions, making great suggestions and even taking our photo (several times!). It was cool to go on the "fish tour" where she described the flavors and differences of all the whole fish. We ate outside and felt like we were in a secret garden, it was adorable. This might be my new fav place in the city...and I can walk from my house. "

  • "This was our second time at this restaurant. We've been there on both of our wedding anniversaries and I expect we'll be back for our third. We really enjoy this place for that special occasion and maybe we'll go more often but the price, time needed, and whole experience keep this reserved for special occasions. I will say we both thought that while it was still excellent, it wasn't quite as good as last year. Since we've only been there twice and there was a year between it's hard to compare but I remember thinking it wasn't quite as good and then my wife brought that up so we both noticed it. I can't put my finger on any one thing though. I will say, this place on its worst day is still better than most restaurants on their best."

  • "Food was fantastic. The eggplant appetizer was a winner and the fresh fish menu is likely the best in Baltimore. Filleted tableside, ordering the fish is an experience. The server appeared hungover, absent minded, and just down right bad. Too bad they can't get better help. I'd go back for the food and hope that the service is better."

  • "We ate outside which was superb. Felt like we were in Europe. Only issue is a very bright light in the fan which destroys an otherwise excellent ambience. Food was very good. The fish is displayed outside the kitchen and is very fresh. It is cooked simply so no sauces to destroy the great taste. Wine selection..much Greek choice... is very nice and reasonably priced. A nice restaurant with nice food. What more can one want? "

  • "After a busy morning of graduation festivities we made our way over to the Black Olive for a great relaxing celebratory lunch that made us smile. Trinya our server was very very nice and accommodating - and according to our Greek family member who spent many summers in Athens it was definitely the real thing!"

  • "At a convention, decided on Greek for dinner, midweek, and took a cab over to Fells Point. Great restaurant in all respects. Fish is clearly taken very seriously. Make sure you let the server show you the daily fish display, it's a treat. We ordered small salads, a couple of different apps and also various entrees. Every dish was just delicious and very well presented, with all the attention to detail possible. Baltimore has so many of these smaller personalized restaurants in neighborhoods that are just great, including Black Olive. My daughter just graduated from Hopkins, so I will miss the trips to see her there, and also finding and experiencing these smaller outstanding restaurants."

  • "Only half the dishes we ordered were acceptable. The mussels were bitter, the Spanikopita, although without the flaky pastry one expects, was well flavored/tasty. The Greek lamb specialty was inedible: pieces of hardened, dried up lamb with plain couscous. Crab cakes were a mush. Far better was the lamb shank, aromatic and densely flavored, and the Mediterranean sea bass, flaky and delicious. This was quite an expensive meal. But the waitress paid as little attention to us as possible- disinterested, barely professional, rarely available for questions. It took ages to get any of our orders. Not an experience we would ever repeat or recommend."

  • "Maybe it's just me that thinks lunch hours extend beyond 1pm. Even if there are others, the staff at this restaurant can't be counted amongst them. I had a reservation for 1:30pm and while there were only two other tables in the restaurant, it took 45 minutes to get our food. Granted, when the food did arrive, it was delicious, but not good enough to make up for the time that I had to spend staring at my colleagues pretending to be interested in spending more time talking about work. If you're into a leisurely meal in a mostly empty restaurant, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, I'm sure there are other restaurants that have good food, better atmosphere and know how to prepare and serve food promptly."

  • "The food was excellent as expected! This was our second visit. This time we brought our 3 kids. We all had fresh fish and appetizers. The food was great, especially liked the octopus salad! Wow!! We had a reservation right at opening and were promptly seated. The staff was very attentive. As the evening progressed and it became busier it was apparent that there was not enough staff to pay attention to people who were already there, filet fish for people who were just receiving their meals, and greet and take orders for new guests. The time it took to transition from having finished the meal, having the table cleared, ordering and eating desert, and finally paying was longer than it should have been."

  • "The food at the Black Olive is absolutely wonderful. There is a new assortment of fish to choose every day. I would recommend the Black Olive mixed seafood grill as an appetizer split by 2 people. I cannot say enough about the preparation and freshness of the fish accompanied by a lemon olive sauce with herbs. The owners of the restaurant are lovely people. One of the owners makes her own bread which is to die for. For desert I would choose the chocolate flourless cake with hazelnuts. My favorite restaurant every time."

  • "Thank you for asking for feedback. The Black Olive restaurant came to me highly recommend through a prominent customer of yours. I am sorry to say I would not make any further recommendations. I came to Baltimore for a few hours and invited a few special friends to dinner. It took an hour for a bottle of Champagne to appear and with no apology. One of my guests had left with nothing to eat or drink. Our meals were overcooked and the fish unappetising. The booking process worked well."

  • "I love fish and went with my family for Mother's Day dinner. Didn't realize they had a fixed menu for that evening. My son had filet mignon which he said was excellent. My daughter lamb which was good, nothing special. My husband had crab cakes which were very good and I had rockfish in cornmeal which was disappointingly extremely dry. I did not enjoy my meal. The salads were very nice. Service was great and it wasn't crowded which was surprising as this is the first time I had been there where it wasn't."
