  • Special Events & Promotions: The Black Olive restaurant opened its doors in 1997 after renovating a Fell’s Point row house that had been vacant for years. Over the years the restaurant grew and became a Baltimore institution. In the early days of the restaurant, on the back patio, where the view of the Inner Harbor and Harbor East reminded one of the histories of a city, a dream was hatched.
In the summer of 2010 that dream becomes a reality. The new Inn at the Black Olive, located on Caroline Street behind the original Black Olive restaurant will open its doors for business.
The Inn will have a market selling organic and sustainable fresh fruits and vegetables, wine, fresh seafood, foods prepared in the Black Olive kitchen, backed goods from a new bakery, suites for guests to spend the night with us, a rooftop café and wine bar that can be used for private events.

Diner Reviews
  • "We ate outside and feasted on the best and freshest seafood. The Greek cooking is the Best in Baltimore by far!! We are making plans to return. Try the sardines in grapeleaves"

  • "Had a great meal here with my wife while visiting Baltimore. I had the snapper, which was excellent, and my wife had the dorade royale, which was decent. (We weren't as big a fans of the royale, but that was a preference over the fish itself, not the preparation.) We also enjoyed the delicious appetizer platter of tarama, tzatziki, melitzanasalata and hummus. As far as atmosphere, we dined in the back room right off the patio, which was very nice. The front room also looked nice as we walked through, but there was a side room that didn't look as classy. I'd recommend requesting the front or rear rooms."

  • "Food was delicious! Dining experience was private and romantic. Very authentic and fresh food. Loved the Mediterranean Sea bass and the baklava ice cream. "

  • "I come for the branzini, which haunts me, but what keeps me coming back is the feeling I get whenever I eat here. I love looking at the array of different fresh fish on ice. The fish comes perfectly grilled and simply sauced, letting the ingredients shine. Their appetizer sampler of hummos and other spreads are first rate. The staff makes you feel welcome in a way that doesn't feel forced at all, unlike many family run places that seem to want to adopt you at first sight, which I find a little off-putting. The service is un-rushed, attentive, and unobtrusive so I can focus on my dinner companions. And the restaurant has real old world charm. I think this restaurant is one of the best in the U.S."

  • "We had dinner here while attending a conference in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and wanted something away from the tourists and convention goers. Amazing! Great menu including a vegetarian option for one of us. The whole fish filleted at the table was great and the service was lovely! One of the better meals I have had and it is just a 5 minute cab ride from the convention center. Highly, highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "My turn to choose a restaurant. I hoped to find nicely cooked Mediterranean/Greek style fish, and I was not disappointed. I got to choose among about two dozen individual fish of three different varieties laid out on a bed of ice. My selection, branzini was cooked perfectly as a whole fish, then filleted and served at the table by the waitress. Friends and spouse had scallops, shrimp kabob, and rack of lamb ...everything done perfectly as requested. Local veggie of the day was cauliflower, lightly grilled. Tasty, but the generous pile on the plate was not very exciting in appearance. Drinks...very generous martinis from non-brand sources were excellent. Baklava, but also different, patented baklava ice cream. I'm sure we'll go back!"

  • "Went for Restaurant Week. Wasn't overly impressed with the food, but it wasn't bad. I had the fish soup as my appetizer, lamb kleftico for my entree and homemade baklava ice cream for dessert. The fish soup and lamb kleftico were both just OK. The ice cream however was amazing. My wife got the greek village salad, crab cake, and baklava. The greek salad and baklava were both very good, however neither of us were big fans of the crab cake. It had a very strong horseradish flavor (i think it was horseradish) and tasted nothing like a traditional MD crab cake. The service was very good and the owner even stopped by our table to see how we were doing. I wasn't overly impressed with the food, but I would definitely give Black Olive another try."

  • "My wife and I were in Baltimore for a conference and reserved this dinner several weeks prior, after reading reviews in Baltimore Magazine and Open Table. We were so happy with our choice. The locale was quaint, the restaurant intimate and the cuisine superb. Picking our whole fish was just as we remembered from our travels to Turkey and Greece. The Octopus salad was outstanding as was the fisherman's soup and Greek salad. The whole branzino was the best we've had and we order it wherever it's served. Can't wait to return!"

  • "Our previous visit to this restaurant was wonderful....this time, not so much. Appetizers were delicious--the sampler (multiple "spreads") and grilled, stuffed calamari--both fabulous. Entrees were black seabass and red snapper--very tasty but seabass filleted at table was full of bones and scales.....yuck. Dessert--baklava ice cream (boring), chocolate cake (dry) and loukoumades (heavy and sitting in honey that tasted as though it came from one of those little plastic honey bears from the grocery store. To add insult to injury, we were hustled out of the restaurant. Granted, we were among the last tables but if the proprietors don't want to remain open until 11p ON A SATURDAY, they ought to cut off reservations earlier. Won't be back."

  • "Heard so much about the Black Olive and decided to take advantage of restaurant week. The food was not worth the prices being charged and the service was less than professional. Seriously doubt there will be a return trip to dine there."

  • "Just felt a little rushed to give up the table, even though there were tables available. Food was really good. The setting is romantic but a little loud. All in all it's definitely worth a repeat trip."

  • "We dines at Black Olive for Restaurant Week. We ordered the Lamb & Couscous in parchment. The lamb was very tough and over cooked. My wife's salad was very good and my fish soup was good but nothing special. Black Olive ha always been one of our favorite restaurants in Baltimore, but last night was a real disappointment. Moreover, the dishes came out in rapid fire making our overall dining experience marginal."

  • "I heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, but wasn't impressed with the food or the service. The menu was very limited, but maybe that's because it was restaurant week. The Greek salad wasn't what I expected b/c there was no lettuce; just tomatoes, onions and feta cheese. The entrée was very bland in flavor; it was chunks of lamb with couscous (sp) in a lemon sauce. So, when we asked for a side of sauce to go with it to add more flavor, they charged us $10 for each small bowl of sauce. So, that knocked down the tip from 20 to 15%, because we felt that the sauce should"ve been complimentary. When we mentioned it to the waitress, i'm sorry, but didn't adjust the bill. I didn't enjoy the meal, and I was still hungry when I left!!"

  • "Their olive bread was good as well as their black olives and olive oil. However, they replaced the fish soup appetizer with a lobster bisque and ran out of the seafood kebab. Our reservation was at 8:30 and it seemed bizarre that they would run out of their most popular entree. I got the greek spread appetizer which was a tiny plate of their four spreads and NOTHING to eat them with (e.g. pita). The lobster bisque tasted spoiled. I ordered the lamb for my main which was some of the toughest lamb I've ever had. The orzo looked and tasted like it was microwaved. My friend got the crab cake which was a sad, 4 oz. portion with a few sprigs of asparagus. The service was awful and our waitress yelled at the busboy. I was extremely disappointed."

  • "We were there for restaurant week. The service was excellent from the moment we walked in the door. We were offered a choice of quiet or more visible which I thought was nice. The food was excellent and just the right size portions. Crab cake was delicious."

  • "Everything, from start to finish, was exceptional! A prix fixe menu generally makes me nervous, but this one had so many options and everyone loved his/her meal. Me, especially! The lobster was out of this world, as was the Baklava ice cream. I would absolutely and highly recommend anyone go to Black Olive for NYE dinner!"

  • "Nice setting on Valentines Day. We expected nothing less than perfection. The charcoal shrimp/lamb entree was excellent as was the baklava/mousse desserts. Lobster bisque lacked lobster. When asked to prepare the calamari differently, due to cheese sensitivity, the server simply said NO! No attempt to ask the chef or explain that it was a pre-fixe menu. Inconsistent wine pours. I received 10oz and my wife received less than 5. Dirty dishes stacked up on the table. The server acted like it was not his job. The manager came by and took my used martini spear from a dirty dish. The server ask for my used martini glass, and both left the other empty glasses/dirty dishes. There are less pricey places in Baltimore. We'll not be returning."

  • "This was my third visit here and used to be one of my favorites. This last visit turned that around. The olives were brought out with hair in it. On more than one occasion, the wrong food was brought to our table. The worst of it was that my girlfriend woke up extremely ill the following morning. The restaurant was jam packed for valentine's dinner which resulted in a high noise level. This was probably my last trip there. I used to love the tour you got when you first walked in and the ability to select the fish you wanted, as well as fileting the fish at your table. If you go on valentines day, you get a specific menu that is both over priced and dissapointing. I can no longer recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "Made an Open Table reservation for Valentines Day. Unfortunately it was Prix Fix menu. Not what we wanted or were informed of- it was very mediocre and therefor, overpriced."

  • "My wife and I have been dining at the Black Olive a number of times over the last few years. We are never disappointed, being the fish lovers that we are. The service has always been very attentive and it seems the whole staff is very schooled in the methods of preparation of all of the food. They offer small plates & appetizers as well as entrees. Four of us were there on a Saturday night, and the place was pretty full. The noise-level was probably higher than during any other night, but still was very tolerable. The fish, scallops, octopus were all delicious. And it is a great place to linger over the meal then move over to the bar."

  • "I am a foodie, and I have been to most of the popular restaurants in Baltimore, but The Black Olive has always been one of my favorites. Very authentic, and always fantastic service. Our server was Elanna, and she made our dinner worth the money. Well versed in the menu and made great recommendations. The owner stopped by, and genuinely thanked us for joining him that evening. I will certainly return soon."

  • "For a romantic dinner for two, a special occasion or a meal with close friends, you can't beat the Black Olive. Great food with Greek flair in a quiet setting makes it one of Baltimore's best."

  • "Great experience overall - I will dream about the grilled octopus salad for some time to come! The dips were also good, especially the melitsanosalata, and we enjoyed a great Oregon pinot noir. Service was slow though our waiter seemed like a great guy. Entrees are pretty much limited to grilled fish - it is truly excellent grilled fish, but the preparation is pretty basic for the price. I think in the future I would rather go for appetizers and wine at the bar rather than doing a full dinner. Still a lovely meal and worth checking out, especially for seafood lovers."

  • "Treated like we were special. Were not pushed to order, but rather were able to settle in and absorb the ambiance. Our appetizers and food were all well above the average fare. Although pricey, our total experience was a "HIGH 5". Even though the dining area was buzzing, the noise level was quite low. A wonderful dining experience."

The owner is very friendly and a hands-on. He makes you feel like you are the only people in the restaurant. I will be returning soon.......... T. Rooks"

  • "Dinner on New Year's Eve was superb! The dinner was a fixed price 6 course meal. We weren't told this when we made reservations, however, we enjoyed thoroughly. The choices were unique and a foodies delight. We enjoyed every course. Lamb chops excellent. Wine list was very good with many options and prices. This was our second visit to Black Olive and there will definitely be more visits. We have also sent in other friends who have raved as well."

  • "We were looking for a quiet and relaxing dinner in Baltimore geared more towards locals. Black Olive was a great choice. The wine selection is a little all over the board, but had some excellent Greek wine choices that paired beautifully with the fantastically fresh grilled mackerel we chose. The fish selection was truly exceptional and it was very difficult to choose just one fish! Unfortunately, we were too full to try any of the desserts, but they did look tasty. The waitstaff was friendly and professional. The only issue I had with Black Olive was the snobby, unwelcoming older dark haired female bartender/floor manager. Not a particularly nice way to cap off an evening. Aside from her, everyone was courteous and professional."
