2011 Recipient of Jefferson County Public Health "Leader in Food Safety" Award

The Black Hat Cattle Co. is the place to go if you're in the mood for a dining experience that goes beyond its great food. Our western decor beckons you with music, laughter, conversation & warm hospitality - hang your hat and stay awhile! If you love 100% natural premium cuts of beef, this steakhouse is the place for you. Our steaks are aged a minimum of 21 days & hand cut daily to maximize flavor & tenderness. We season our steaks with only salt & pepper and grill them at a searing 1800 degrees so you can taste the difference in our all natural beef. If you don't like beef, this is the place for you too. We offer a diverse menu including St Louis Style Ribs; chicken dishes and a variety of tempting fresh fish & seafood entrees. We go beyond the obvious quality of food & drink - we embrace the welcoming spirit of the West.Continued

  • "This was our first visit and it definitely won't be the last. The food was fantastic and the wait staff very friendly. Great experience."

  • "Everyone seemed to think the food was too salty or overseasoned and a bit overcooked. Usually a good place"

  • "Black Hat Cattle Co. never disappoints. The food was amazing (as usual) the steaks melt in your mouth. Our waiter John was great as well. He was very friendly and knew the menu & wine list. I love that the owner is always there wearing his black hat. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We have been looking for a great steak house that wasn't over run with too many menu choices, like many chain places. When you want steak, you want a place that does steak perfectly. We also usually dine with our children and have friends with kids as well, so it has to be kid friendly. We found it! The steak was perfect, the sides left me craving for more, even though I couldn't have eaten another bite. The kids loved everything they had, including our teenage boy who generally eats the plate the food is served on. Great wines and very friendly staff. This is definitely a place we will be visiting again."

  • "I have driven past this building for YEARS, never knowing that such an amazing restaurant was there. I used Open Table to search for steakhouses and Black Hat popped up. I took a chance and made reservations for our dinner out, knowing this would turn out being either a bad idea, or the best ever! It was the best. The location is on Hwy 74 in Kittridge, and the interior décor is Western/Colorado mountain. We were greeted by a friendly host and had a very friendly waitress. Our main purpose was to celebrate our anniversary with hopefully a great tasting steak. If you are a steak lover, this is the place!!! Best tasting, most tender and locally raised meat!!! Loved it. Apple pie for dessert was also amazing. We will be back!!!"

  • "The food was just not as good as it has been in the past. We had dined at the Black Hat Cattle Co. two previous times and really thought it was a very good restaurant. This time the steaks were just not as flavorful as in the past and we felt that their prices were a little high for the quality of food. The service was very good however."

  • "We had the cowboy drumstick steak which was delicious and the lollipop short ribs which were tender and very flavorful. I would highly recommend the food was outstanding, the server attentive, and the music was great! This steakhouse is in a small mountain town and the drive is beautiful."

  • "I have been there many times list last year - everything from celebrating birthdays to celebrating the passing of life to romantic dinners. Its quiet, clean, menu is wonderful and the staff is very attentive to all of your needs. Yes its pricey but well worth the value AND the desserts are to fabulous."

  • "We have been coming here for years now. Love the place and love the location. It gives us reason to drive up in the mountains."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or to meet with good friends, or for entertaining visitors. The atmosphere is great, the food is great, not inexpensive but a great value, and the owner often greets you at the door and says good night to you as you are leaving. My special place to eat out."

  • "Our experience @ the Black Hat Cattle Company was better the first time we went. The people were nicer and the food was better. My sister and I brought our cousin up for dinner to celebrate her birthday. Because the food wasn't as good as I remember from a previous visit, it was a little disappointing."

  • "We had a lovely time...our steaks were perfectly cooked and delicious. Our server was very attentive and suggested a great wine to go with our dinner. The music is very enjoyable and goes well with the cowboy theme. They have an extensive collection of Bev Doolittle prints which are very unique. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a great steak and friendly atmosphere."

  • "Wonderful food! The steaks were yummy, although one was a little under done, but we had it sent back to the kithcen for a little more oven time and it was perfect."

  • "We always head to the Black Hat when we need a friendly, cozy place for a great meal. The Restaurant Week steak wasn't up to their usual standard, but you have to consider the low price for the meal."

  • "We brought our family here for a couple of milestone celebrations, and the food and service were outstanding. The steaks were amazing. The elk medallions were some of the best I have ever had. Just a great experience overall."

  • "We met friends for dinner at the Black Hat during "Denver Restaurant Week", & I was pleased that my request for a 'quieter' table was accommodated without having to remind. We were promptly greeted by an attentive server, and ordered from 3 selections on the special Restaurant Week menu. Turns out the 4 of us ordered the same entree - strip steak. Although it would not have been my 1st choice in steak cut, it was prepared to order & very flavorful. Our friends ordered their steaks 'medium well', yet they were served with a pink center (which they said was ok with them). Cordial people, including the owner, & good food make it a reliable choice for a dining adventure in the foothills."

  • "Was supposed to meet someone for dinner on a snowy night and she didn't show. Waited about a half hour and finally was seated alone. Hosts at the door were very gracious, offered to seat me alone or to wait at their small bar. Decided to wait on a bench inside the front door and the host and hostess kept up conversation with me during the wait. Food and service were wonderful! Restaurant was busy for a Tuesday night with snow falling making the roads a bit treacherous. host said that they had some cancellations due to the weather but a steady stream of people were coming and going, even with the slick roads. It was Restaurant Week so I don't know if that had anything to do with the traffic coming in. I WILL be back!!!"

  • "My only complaint was the bread pudding for desert. That was the only choice available for resturant week and I am not a bread pudding fan. Otherwise the evening was wonderful, both food and service was beyond normal."

  • "A friend and I wanted to have our fancy yearly girls night out with a new place.Stumbled upon Black Hat Cattle Co. via OpenTable as we were looking for something during restaurant week. After reading pages of reviews and several looks at their menu - I knew this was the place for us. And boy, it did not disappoint!! Food was fantastic, we did not order off the Restaurant Week menu as we didnt want to limit ourselves. Glad we didn't! The Surf and Turf special was to die for! The steak was cooked to perfection - my friend also ordered the Filet Mignon med rare and she said it was perfect! Lobster portion was great - not too big and not too small. Worth the drive into Evergreen if you are looking for a great steak but want something new!"

  • "Half the fun of black hat cattle co is the drive up from Denver. If you have an early reservation you will be able to experience breath taking views. Upon your arrival you will most likely be greeted by one of the owners that will assist you in finding a table. The staff seem more like family than employees and all offer great service with a smile and offer a real opinion about what to order and not just what the cook wants to push for the day. The food was great, starting with the nice light rolls and finishing with the heavy bread pudding. This is a place I would absolutely take out of town guest!!!"

  • "We have gone twice, once last year during restaurant week and then this year. I feel last year we really enjoyed the food and this year we did not. I had the seafood platter and my salmon was raw, yuck. The salad was good. I would not recommend it."

  • "The good: Service, it was a weeknight and it was not busy at all so I would expect good service, the food, atmosphere. The bad: Way overpriced, we ordered the special, a bone in ribeye that was cooked correctly, was not large by any stretch but for $44 dollars I would have expected better. Our waitress was quick to present the specials but when I got the bill I understood why she did not mention the pricing. We chose The Black Hat because we heard that the prime rib was really good, alas it was not available this night even though it is pictured predominately in the website. Had the pricing been in line with the real world I would recommend but this was hardly a $120 dinner experience, for 2, food only. Total bill was $180"

  • "This restaurant has a very Colorado cabin/romantic feel and has absolutely amazing steak and poultry. Friendly staff who take care of every detail and are happy to answer all questions. A little on the pricey side, but you definitely get what you pay for at the Black Hat Cattle Co."

  • "I ordered a bottle of the purple cowboy wine (cab). Wasn't too impressed with it. I'm not sure the effect was just me or the higher alcohol content of 13.5. It made me so tired after a half glass which is extremely unusual. I saved the rest of it for two more nights and had the same thing happen. Weird. One more thing, for me it left an after taste. Anyway, may I recommend a wine called Sterling cab. I ordered a bottle from Keys on the green and have since ordered a case that my family and friends can't get enough of. The rib eye I ordered was fantastic!! Your cook did an outstanding job of preparing it. I love your steak menu. Living in the mountains, you guys seem to be the only "steak house" around."

  • "This was our first visit, made doubly important as it was a special occasion. Food was exquisite and the service was exceptional, from the welcome at the door to the query about our experience at the door as we left. Our waitress was very efficient and friendly."

  • "Had a very nice time at dinner for Valentine's Day. Looking for an out of the way different place to try and this was a perfect find! Very attentive servers and great food! Not your usual run of the mill steakhouse! Chocolate bourbon pecan dessert was fabulous!"

  • "Went there for a birthday celebration, great ambience and service! Pricing for specials was too expensive for the amount of food! Cowboy " Drumstick" a bone on ribeye was no better that their standard ribeye yet was $12.00 more...thought it would be something huge like a flintstone portion but sadly it was not Our guest had 2 lobster tail meal at a cost of nearly $60.00...did not see the value in it... My wife had the fried chicken and it was great! All in all with 2 cocktails,2 appetizers, 2 salads, 1 soup, 1 bottle of wine at $59.00, 3 entres and a shared no charge birthday dessert the bill came to $235.00 plus tip"

  • "Meats were very good (filet, lobster & elk medallions). Mixed vegetables were very good, Creamed spinach was barely warm and the roasted garlic and artichoke rice had way too much sage. For the price I expected better."
