A word from Black Bull
BLACK BULL pays homage to the tapas and pintxos bars of Spain, full of warmth and vivacity, a meeting point for friends, where an unassuming entrance conceals a boisterous setting serving simple yet surprising food. At the heart of Black Bull is the custom of tapeo, a treasured Spanish custom of drinking and socializing, grazing on food, bouncing from one dish to another, always accompanied by a little wine, sangria or beer.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Hands down, the best tapas in Chicago! Incredible flavors and the service was outstanding."

  • "It seems that in an effort to make it more modern and “cool” this place has lost its soul. Black Bull new menu misses some of the best tapas they used to have – as the blood sausage. Black Bull octopus dish used to be excellent, with a strong flavor, and its patatas bravas used to be the best I tried in Chicago. All of that is gone with the wind!! Nowadays, its octopus is tender but flavorless and the patatas bravas are just a bunch of baked potatoes cubes with ketchup. If I had to describe this Black Bull 2014 experience in few words I would say weak flavors and “Lost in translation”. A big disappointment, I used to recommend this restaurant to friends and colleagues but those days are gone."

  • "Need more variety--chicken andbeef skewers or even a chicaken breast on the menu would be helpful."

  • "The tapas that we tried were all excellent and reminded us of the typical tapas in Barcelona. Tortilla de patata, pan con tomate and croquetas de jamon were all excellent plus the solomillo was delicious. Paella was prepared very well with great flavors. Plus, one of the few places in Chicago (maybe the only one) to serve Estrella Damm on tap (official beer of Barcelona). Fun cocktails and a stellar Spanish wine list rounded out the menu. Fun atmosphere with great waitstaff!"

  • "Good food, even pleased my parents. Excellent sangria, black paella."

  • "Our server was attentive and knowledgeable and made an effort to make conversation without bugging us. I'm moving to the area soon and I'll be frequenting Black Bull."

  • "We were a party of two that made an impromptu reservation on a Friday night. The space is small and a little jammed packed but the decor is nice. The food was delicious and our server was funny and more than accommodating of my special request for a substitution (due to an allergy). I will warn diners, the portions are smaller than other tapas places in the city but the quality is top notch, so I wasn't bothered. Their sangria is also good, but I would skip the house cocktail menu. Over all, we had a great experience and will likely return."

  • "Great food. Lively atmosphere. The music level was that of a concert. I thought it could have just been me and my date; however, upon looking at the tables around us, all we're leaning in and yelling to hear one another."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant with a hip atmosphere. The spanish tapas have a culinary flair and the prices were very reasonable. The service was helpful and efficient."

  • "Went with our son last Saturday. It is the third time we go there. This time it was very disappointing. It started when we came in and there was that foul bathroom odor in the restaurant. In the past we went during the summer so it was not noticeable because the windows were open. the smell was really bothersome during our whole dinner. The food was average and the meatballs were so tasteless and watery that we could not eat them. I don't think we are going back"

  • "Enjoyed a great night for a second date with my lady friend. The goat cheese appetizer was delish! Beef tenderloin--all I can I say is, "it's goin down! I'm yelling tendeeeer!!!" On another note, the music was a tad loud in the dining area. But overall a great experience. Ole!"

  • "I love all meats, but the meat selections on the menu seemed very limited. Almost all of the tapas on the menu included ham. We tried the mini burgers with the quail eggs. It was very different, but not too bad. The waitress was very attentive, and she seemed very knowledgable and eager to serve our table. I understand that tapas are small plates, but this is not a place to go if you want a large variety of tapas or if you are extremely hungry."

  • "our reservations was at 10:15 PM we did not get seated until 10:40PM. Waited by the bar and ordered a sangria and beer. The waitress tried to steel $3.00 from us and said it was the registers fault."

  • "I used to go to this place all the time when it first opened and then I moved neighborhoods and just went back for the first time in about 8 months. The staff has always been wonderful and very friendly!! Since I've been back, they have gotten new chef and unfortunately, in my opinion the food was much better before, more selections and overall taste of the food. Very disappointed because the restaurant as a whole is cool, just need to bring back the old chef."

  • "Dinner at Black Bull was great! Food was excellent and they gave extra special treatment for the birthday. Atmosphere was fun/energetic yet not too loud. They only lose stars in service due to the reservations. I had never been to this place before so I made a reservation in advance since I had a larger party. Making the reservation online was easy, however, when I needed to increase/modify my reservation it would have been easier to get a hold of bigfoot. I finally got a hold of them to update my reservation and it was fine from there, but they were very delayed in responding. I'll still go back because it was excellent!"

  • "We tried 6 dishes in total, everything was wonderful. The bacon wrapped dates are fit to order for dessert."

  • "goat cheese appetizer was very good. others were just OK. Brussels sprouts strong mushroom flavor and very oily. hard to understand the waiter, which caused confusion in our order of a port wine, where we received a sherry instead."

  • "Food was excellent and a lot of different choices to choose from you can try all the traditional plates. Worth the trip, and great sangrai"

  • "We went to Black Bull once before when it had first opened and I was in love! The food and wait staff was amazing! But when we went back this weekend with a group of 6 I was very disappointed. First we were seated at a table that was way too small for us and we had reservations! The table that was next to us was practically sharing our meal with us they were so close. The waiter was attentive, but the food was not as good as I remembered. Overall it just did not live up to the expectations I had after having such a nice experience the first time."

  • "Food and ambiance were amazing, however, we waited an hour for our table even though we had a reservation. Server gave us a round of drinks on the house, but was still very frustrating to wait until 9pm to eat when we had a reservation."

  • "I arrived with a party of six for my friends' birthdays. We made reservations and they had a table waiting for us. The staff is friendly and a ambiance is great. The food was pretty good. I have one complaint; the paella is small and skimpy for the price. I ordered a paella de mariscos and I was quite disappointed. Don't bother with the paella."

  • "As always the food is excellent! I am excited to hear about new chefs and the expansion of their menu. I highly recommend this place!"

  • "Each year we go out for Tapas either to Cafe Iberico or Emilios. Unfortunately we decided to try Black Bull. The food was mediocre at best, and insanely salty. The biggest disappointment was the patatas bravas, which at most restaurants are tossed in a lovely spicy mayo and served in a generous portion. These came on a plate of 9 small square cut potatoes with a dallop of KETCHUP on each one! What?! And not even nicely roasted, but more like the consistency of a tater-tot. The scallops were good but salty; the beef tenderloin was good but the red pepper was so saturated with oil that it was unedible. The saving grace:mini pork sandwiches with a nice spicy mayo and toasted bun, but very small. The encrusted pork loin was also good."

  • "When I dined here, there's definitely an authentic feel and taste to this place. Definitely recommend for a date or group! The service was awesome! Our waiter was so sweet, helpful and didn't rush us!"

  • "Black Bull has a great set-up. My friends and I actually sat right where we could see the food being made. They have really fun cocktails and the food was very interesting and tasty. It's a great place to go on. A date or to start your night off with friends. You can be dressed up or down there. It's in a great location with many bars walking distance from Black Bull."

  • "Black Bull can be hit or miss, but for a late night dinner, I found Black Bull to hit the spot. The service at the bar was better than table service and our server (Sophie) was so nice and attentive. And I have to admit, the dishes I had - gazpacho and a torta were amazing! They reminded me of the dishes I had in Mexico and Spain. I'll be back because of the great service and the food - but I'll be at the bar!"

  • "Service was absolutely horrible. We were seated at approx 6:00p.m., our food took so long it was after 11:00 p.m. when our meal was finished. It took the waitress 30 mins to just bring us "warm" water and about another 20 mins after for her to come back so we could order. Food was not that great, definately not worth the money."

  • "Fun for a night out with your spouse or friends, Black Bull revised their existing menu for the better. THere are more options and a range of taste and flavors that you can't find anywhere else. Their selection of wines from Spain are wonderful and the Sangria is also wonderful. Must try dishes include the scallops, gazpacho, and peach salad. Open late so even those who tend to be at the office a bit later than desired can still expect great service and a great dinner later."
