A word from BIX
An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz.   • "My husband and I were excited to get away on a date night for a special occasion. The restaurant was grossly overpriced for our experience. Service was mediocre with little knowledge of the menu or wine list, dietary restrictions, or attention to detail (didn't fill my our wine glasses once, left dirty plates, etc.) The ambience was loud (hard to hear the waiter or each other). Entrees were pricey, and if you wanted a starch or vegetable to go with your protein better prepare to pay an extra twenty bucks for them. We left feeling like we could have gone to so many other fantastic restaurants in SF with better good, service, and value. We left disappointed. Would not recommend."

  • "The food and service were outstanding. We were a bit early and sat at bar. The manager cam over and said our table was not ready. He was very apologetic and a few moments later a very nice bit to eat was given to us and our champagne refilled. This was all above and beyond - signs of an excellent staff. Our table was absolutely the best for us - it was upstairs and toward the center. We dine out often and this was a top experience."

  • "The service was excellent, the food was very good and it was pleasant dining to live music (jazz pianist and singer). For the entrees, my husband ordered the chicken hash because he was allergic to many of the other entrees, and I ordered the branzino (European seabass) and both were prepared well. The dining area was quite elegant with very interesting artwork and low lighting. I would say that the ambience was romantic except that the room was quite noisy with people trying to talk above the music."

  • "We'd heard amazing things about Bix. Great location, unique stylistic interior, and fabulous cocktails -- all perfect mixings for a special night out. Well folks, we went here to celebrate a special event in our lives and I've got to say the experience was expensive and decidedly "meh". Nothing was bad, but nothing was exceptional either. The manhattans we had were shaken (wrong), the house cocktails we tried were unadventurous. The food was fine, but again nothing exceptional. The steak tar tar was pretty decent, and the truffled deviled eggs were probably the highlight. Our mains were both overcooked and served on piping hot plates -- too long waiting to be brought to our table? There are far better ways to spend $250 on dinner for two."

  • "When we come up to visit our daughter we always want to try new places. This place came highly recommended but it ended up being a huge disappointment. Drinks were good and the potato pillow were good also. I ordered the duck on the waiters suggestion. What a mistake. It was so undercooked and tough, that I couldn't eat it. The steak was good but not as tender as should have been for the price. We didn't see the waiter again until our plates were taken away and he came back for our dessert order. We were really looking forward to this meal but will not go back."

  • "Bix has been around for 26 years and is still a classic San Franciscan dining option. The supper club atmosphere with nightly music makes the dining experience here a completely special event. Yet, it is the food that will bring me back. My daughter and I shared a number of items from the table side preparation of Steak Tartar (from Kobe beef!), to the delicately presented Halibut Ceviche, to an amazing Gorgonzola Panna Cotta with perfectly roasted beets to a Spring driven succulent Swordfish with Leeks and Peas to the perfect sweet finish of the classically prepared Banana's Foster. Our waiter helped direct our menu selection and presented each course in perfect timing. It was a wonderful evening."

  • "Chose BIX based on their dessert menu as we were in the celebratory mood. Even though there is a second floor, the tables are close together and because of the live music, people talk louder than usual which can be annoying if you're trying to have a romantic dinner (or the people next to you are obnoxious). We had the petrale sole and the black truffle cheeseburger, accompanied by red wine and cocktails - all delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was lovely but the chocolate bread pudding was too rich and had too much chocolate. The best part was the live jazz, very enjoyable and added greatly to the atmosphere. Not ideal for a quiet conversation but makes this place stand out."

  • "Bix is a cool spot, and the food is great. However we waited 20 minutes for our reservation and were given a corner table (good) right next to the kitchen door (bad). This wouldn't have been such a bad thing if the same size table set unoccupied on the opposite side of the restaurant for the duration of our meal. Our waiter was rather aloof and at times inappropriate. It's close to being an awesome place but the experience this time was sub-par."

  • "My teenage daughter was in town for spring break, and I told her I would treat her to one "fancy" meal. We selected BIX, and she definitely wasn't disappointed. A good friend and longtime SF resident joined us who had not been to BIX in a long time, and she wasn't disappointed either. I could kick myself because I forgot the name of the waiter, but he was awesome. He recommended great food selections and didn't act huffy when my daughter and friend asked to split the truffle burger and Caesar salad. The live music was just right--not too loud, and the martinis were superb. And, of course, I love the ambience; it's especially fun to sit upstairs."

  • "We ordered almost all of the restaurant's signature dishes. The food was mediocre, at best. Maybe if we didn't pay such inflated prices for the dishes, I could rate the food above average but such is not the case. Also, we were one of the first sets of diners in the restaurant and still, we felt rushed by our server. I went to the restroom in between our 2nd and 3rd courses and when I returned to the table our food was sitting there. To have a $40 entree sitting on the table while a guest is in the restroom is unacceptable. As we were paying our bill, we overheard our server tell the table next to us the specials for the evening, I ask: did we look like we weren't interested in hearing specials??? We won't be back."

  • "I would never return because I had to talk so loudly to my companion since the speakers were pointed directly at us. When I asked the waiter to either turn down the jazz (yes, jazz!) or to move the speakers, he turned them another direction which was helpful but not good enough. The steak tartare was bland and boring and had no spice whatsoever. I could not get the salt to come out of the shaker and told the waiter. He said that it was kosher salt but only a regular salt shaker so the salt was too large to come out easily. I suggest that if you use Kosher salt you may consider getting a kosher shaker. I prefer a restaurant where I can speak to my dinner partner without having to raise my voice. The music is truly terrible!"

  • "We haven been in Bix for a while.... and we haven't missed much. It used to be good. Well, to be honest, one cannot really say it was bad but it was very boring, bland and just average. My husband ordered the $29.00 "truffled" burger and what a disappointment that was.... I had the duck breast and yes it was tender.. That's about it. I guess the point I am trying to make is that was a $40/entry price sticker one can find MUCH better food in San Francisco."

  • "I love Bix. I recall coming to lunch at Bix in 1989 - it was fabulous then, and it continues to be fabulous. Gorgeous setting, great coktails and wine list - and the food is classic without being dull or too predictable. They do always have the chicken hash a la Bix - one taste and you will know why the regulars would revolt if it was ever retired from the menu! Great for casual, romantic, business family - I have even been to a wedding at Bix. (The marriage did not last, but they did have gorgeous kids!)"
