The atmosphere is the best part of this restaurant: the bar scene is very vibrant and the tiered level elegance of the entire dining room makes me feel like I'm in a scene for the Great Gatsby. The food is very good as well. Be warned, however: it is excruciatingly noisy in this place. This is NOT for dinner parties that want to have nice conversations. The live jazz here is always a blast. A before-dinner Sazerac is practically required drinking, but we've discovered via process of elimination that pretty much everything on the cocktail menu is not only drinkable, but delicious. The appetizers are designed to be shared, and feature a pretty wide array of delectable finger foods. Our main courses—the duck and the swordfish—were perfectly prepared, and there was plenty to go around. Bananas Foster rounded out the meal, leaving us stuffed and satisfied. We live in SF and are near all the hotspots off Valencia. I love walking down the alley and all of a sudden Friday night bar crowd is laughing and having drinks. You are not rushed through your meal. We were there two hours. We have stopped by there before for just a late night drink and bananas foster at the bar. The 2 other couples I was with had never met each other so I was scrambling to find somewhere else in the neighborhood. The GM came out, greeted us personally, and assured us that everything would be taken care of. He personally brought out some small bites to eat compliments of the house and got us a table put together in about 30 mins. The food is amazing. The service is top notch. We had the duck and the New York steak, both cooked to perfection. Our appetizers were the crab and brioche and the smoked trout as the waiter offered to combine a half order of each--nice touch. Speaking of the waiter, he was fantastic. We did wait over 45 min to be seated for our reservation. The manager came and offered us a glass of bubbly at the end of our wait--a nice gesture. Table of 4 shared the crab rolls which consisted of a mound of crab on a square of delicate brioche. My grilled swordfish special was excellent with some tasty sauteed greens on the side. I asked for no potatoes and got more veggies. Others enjoyed the duck confit, the truffled burger with truffle fries and the spaghetti with lobster. We chose Bix because I read about it on yelp. I was SO pleased, absolutely in love with the atmosphere, and the food was great! And I loved how hidden it was in the alleyway, it was a pleasant surprise and we definitely plan on returning..with friends! The concierge at the Ritz recommended this spot as an upscale local favorite & now I know why. My husband had a burger w/ truffles that was a total show-stopper (elegant man-food). House-made mozzarella wrapped w/ prosciutto melts in your mouth. Service was amazing. The chef was highly accommodating to my 9 year old son has a gluten/dairy intolerance. I go there for business dinners and birthday dinners, and it never disappoints. The food is perfect every time, and our server this past time, Jackie, was awesome. This past visit, we were a group of 8, and Jackie was attentive, energetic and just perfect. Everyone at the table loved their cocktails, wine, food and dessert.
