Good news: It's a nice little place with interesting French food. From Bouillabaisse to Duck Confit, I've never had a bad meal there. Bad news: It's closing on April 30. The owners are going to concentrate on their other restaurant, Bastille. They may have some specials in this last week.

We took a friend to celebrate her birthday dinner. We'd heard good things about the Bistrot and wanted a special dinner for our friend. We had reservations and were seated right away. and then we waited and waited. Finally, water was poured and our drinks order taken. Our waitress stopped by to tell us about the specials. She gave curt responses to our questions and acted completely indifferent to us. Again, we waited for drinks. And I don't want you to think they were so crowded that they couldn't keep up because they were not. Turns out our friend did not get the drink she ordered and we had a very difficult time getting someone's attention to correct it. After another long wait, our dinner was served. The trout and asparagus risotto was good but not exceptional. The steak our friend ordered was cooked as requested but had a lot of gristle that was inedible. The dessert was tasty but could not make up for the overall experience. We'll not be returning.

Great restaurant for meeting friends or having dinner before a show at the theatre nearby. Neighborhood folks come in all the time. The staff stays the same so that says something for the management. Everyone makes certain you have an enjoyable and relaxing time. No hustle, no bustle just a chance to eat great food, drink wine. Desserts are wonderful!

Bistrot Royal is fabulous. A tiny restaurant off-the-beaten path in Old Town Alexandria. It is the sister restaurant of Bastille that used to occupy the site but moved to a more central and larger location. The restaurant itself is cute, well decorated. The staff very pleasant and attentive. The food, purely French in flavour and style. Simply perfection. The wine list is full of value and well-priced. The owners clearly want you to buy wine! My only complaint ... Nothing decadently chocolate on the dessert menu like a flourless chocolate torte. C'est la vie. There is always room for improvement! :-)

I always enjoy going to Bistrot Royal. The food is reliably good. The service great. They don't rush you. Very friendly. I have eaten there on 3 visits to Alexandria for business. I will certainly eat there again.
