  • "Had to wait a bit for a table but worth it. service was fabulous and even gave a complimentary glass of wine for waiting. Food was great!"

  • "More Parisian than many Bitro's in the City of Lights. Our server Liouc was amazing and a gem in and of himself. A good wine list at reasonable prices and cuisine that could match any Bistro fare in this City. Though in an odd location parking is convenient a few feet away and in the evening I suspect it is always empty ($10.00 and very safe). You will forget you are in Chicago and slow your pace down and relax with friends or your lady."

  • "Food was so-so, steak frites was chewy, definitely didn't seem like a great cut of meat. Fries were tasty though. Wouldn't come back or recommend. Waiter thought he was being funny but came across pretentious and annoying. The service feels French in that they don't pay very timely attention."

  • "Bistro Voltaire is a great restaurant for a special occasion or for a romantic evening with its cozy atmosphere. I think the restaurant has only about 20 tables but it does have a large bar. The food was excellent and the desserts are amazing. I can't say enough about the professional wait staff. Overall this restaurant exceeded my expectaions and I will return."

  • "Went here for a date night the other day. Food was fantastic. Service was spot on; polite, attentive, and funny. Ambiance was nice. Towards the end of the night I think they turned on oldies music for us (Marvin Gaye etc)..."

  • "We love this place. Visited for the first time on NYE and enjoyed everything about it. Nice to know they are consistent, as our second visit was equally lovely. We are especially impressed with their service."

  • "The food and staff were excellent. They were very professional and treated us well. I thought the food portions were a little smaller than expected, but all the dishes tasted great. The service, however, was a bit slow and took about 45 minutes for entrees to come out after ordering."

  • "We really enjoyed this special restaurant. Service and food were great. We immediately felt comfortable as soon as we entered the restaurant. The lighting, the decor, the kindness of the wait staff and the food were all very pleasing. We will definitely recommend this place to our friends looking for a good restaurant in Chicago."

  • "Bisro Voltaire is lovely French restaurant. If you forget you were on Chicaog Ave, you of though you were in Paris. The food is well priced and the perfect serving size. The food was outstanding! Do yourself a favor and go."

  • "Delicious meal at fair prices. Loved the bistro atmosphere. Service was friendly. I will definitely return."

  • "Third time here and it was even better than before. A Gilt promotion reminded us of this charming place and since our meal was so discounted, we ordered a spectacular bottle of wine."

  • "A lovely place, attentive service but overpriced for really mediocre food."

  • "A charming place which looks and feels like an authentic French bistro. Ask for a table in the back half seating area as there is a cold draft from the front door. We were seated immediately and the waiter was friendly, timely and not overly vigilant-just right. responsive-they serve bread(not very French) with a dollop of butter. Requested more, received it quickly. My spouse had a special, Mediterranean sea bass which was done perfectly and I had the braised short ribs. They were fall-off-the-bone tender, served over mashed potatoes with a wonderful gravy. We started with the Lyonaise salad which was great, wonderful flavor. We shared it; it was plenty. House wines were very good. We would definitely return and recommend to others."

  • "This was one of the best dinners I have had in Chicago, beating out Bistro Campagne, Bistro Margot and La Sardine in my book. We had cocktails (manhattans) to start that were fantastic, followed by escargot. We ordered the steak and duck for our entrees, and asked our server Steven to recommend a wine. He was extremely knowledgeable about wine and picked a great one for our dinners. The duck was the best I have tasted--cooked perfectly to medium rare, with a crisp skin, and not to greasy. My husband's steak was wonderful too (though I preferred the duck). Only minor complaint was the creme brulee--it was a bit "over bruleed." The chocolate cake we had also ordered was to die for, so it more than made up for it."

  • "My family loved Bistro Voltiare. The drinks were delicious. The food was so great that all of our plates were empty for each course. Definitely going here again! I would recommend the escargot, salmon tartare, duck confit for appetizers. Basically anything for dinner was delicious"

  • "What a lovely restaurant, great atmosphere, great food and a relaxed environment. Love that the restaurant is not too large and that the server was from Paris and was very helpful in choosing items. Almost too relaxed as I started to get antsy at the end as they allow you to relax between every course. Don't want to tell too many people about this restaurant as I want to be back and enjoy without crowds!"

  • "We went for their pre fixe Valentines dinner. The food was fantastic! Lobster Bisque very flavorful, and delicious scallops. Sea Bass perfect. Excellent French wine. Chocolate cake unbelievable. The only reason not to give 5 stars; the restaurant seating is somewhat cramped, and we were seated near the door which was drafty. They tried to deal with this issue by installing a second Winter door about 2 feet out, but our dinner was still interrupted about 10 times with a blast of cold air. Service was good, friendly; but just a little slow."

  • "Great food, great service, great atmosphere! Our server Martin was over the top good."

  • "The place is a bit small and the tables are very close to each other. You can hear clearly what the next table is saying. Also we sat at the section near the entrance and every time customers came in there was a draught and made us feel cold and uncomfortable. The food and service are okay for the price. The bread is soft and hot. Dessert has limited choice."

  • "My boyfriend and I tried this place for Restaurant Week on a Monday night. My whole experience was wonderful. The waitor (Steve) was very attentive and prompt with our food. Even though there were other tables he served he was very attentive and knowledgable about the dishes on the menu. His service was excellent. And the food was amazing! I have recommended this placd to everyone. I will definately be back."

  • "This is a neighbor gem! Passed it many times but never noticed because of the understated sign outside. Our waiter really enhanced the experience with his great suggestions, fun friendly service and nice touches like the complimentary after dinner liquor. Best mussels ever; high quality, plump, perfectly cooked with a delicious broth & served with pomme frites. Good frites but not the thin, crispy kind you typically expect. Interior is reminiscent of a standard Parisienne bistro, tres charming! Can't wait to return!"

  • "We arrived at 5pm and did not get out until 7:40. There were times when those around us who came in after we did were served before we were. I don't know if the fact that we were 2 women, as opposed to a man and a woman was a factor. Others did get out faster than we did."

  • "Each table was so close you could hear the people next you conversation. Made it a bit awkward. Not willing to go here again unless that is changed. Spread them out people! Don't pack us in like sardines."

  • "Don't judge this restaurant by it's exterior. Bistro Voltaire is a treasure with great food and service at a reasonable price."

  • "Came for restaurant week. And the food was excellent. But service was a little disappointing, especially after reading a couple reviews. We made reservation, and we got that on time. But we didn't get seated for at least 20 min. So we waited and grabbed a drink at the bar. And the bartender there was excellent. Super friendly and helpful in selecting a wine. And then during the meal, the waiter was friendly but just took awfully long for him to come around to us for anything. If it wasn't for the slow service, Service would have gotten 5 stars, but it was slow."

  • "Although it's not especially hidden away, I walked past it for years and never noticed it. I would never have suspected would be such a quaint, lovely little transport to Paris for a quiet, cozy dinner."

  • "A great dining experience. The onion soup was perfect. The moules marinieres were excellent. I had the magret de canard and my wife had the coq au vin. Both were delicious. We had a very tasty haut medoc with the main course. There were no surprises but perfectly executed classic French fare."

  • "The best dinner we have had in the Chicago area in the last year! Very cozy, inviting space. It was a quiet night when we were there, but I can imagine that it can get noisy if the restaurant is busier. Service was top notch and food was outstanding. Bread, mussels, coq au vin, pork tenderloin and creme brule all delicious. Nice selection of french wines. Reasonably priced. Will return often!"

  • "Nice prix-fixed menu served at leisurely pace for a crowded holiday special. Lobster bisque especially good. Apple tart dessert is nice version of classic tart tartin. Main courses lacking in a starch or potato accompaniment which is a disappointment for a bistro! As a big fan of French bistros will plan a return visit to see how it compares to other Chicago favorites."

  • "When our plans for NYE fell through only a few days before the holiday, my boyfriend and I decided to look for an early seating for dinner. When we showed up at 5:30 we were the only patrons there, so of course the service was spectacular - not hovering or overdone, just responsive and knowledgeable. The restaurant has a nice variety of music playing, but not too loud, which was a refreshing change from many newer spots that seem to pride themselves on having club-worthy decibel levels. Our meal was wonderful. Fresh and simply prepared vegetables, a succulent slice of steak, and an absolutely decadent chocolate dessert. We will definitely return."

  • "I went with my boyfriend and used a Gilt City voucher. Despite having a coupon, the waiter(s) treated us no differently than any other customer. We had the table at the front where the window was, and although cute and normally a desirable spot, because it was a cold winter night, every time the door opened, we were greeted with a very cold draft. It's common, I'v experienced, to be seated in the least comfortable spot when you are not a full paying customer. Cocktails were STRONG. Food was quite tasty but there was a delay and the waiter apologized a few times for it and bought us a second desert and a coffee in good gesture. We left very full. I would come back, but maybe not in winter when I have a coupon!"
