We have eaten at Bistro Vivant
several times. Usually it's a good experience, however this time we were not happy with the meal or the service. It took about 10 minutes for the server bring us our drink order. I ordered hangar steak and frites; my wife ordered salad and French onion soup; we split an order of escargot. My wife requested that her soup be brought out when my entree was served, but it came with the appetizer. Service was really slow, considering the place was not that busy at the time. My hangar steak came very rare, instead of medium rare as I requested. I'm not sure if we'll be coming back."

shellfish heavy. If I lived there, I might return, but I would not drive there even from Arlington."

Came here right after they opened
and was underwhelmed. After 2 lackluster meals, I stayed away. Lately, the reviews had improved and then I heard there was a new chef. I decided to give Bistro Vivant another try and I'm glad I did. Is it Le Diplomate? Mais non! Is it a solid neighborhood bistro? Oui! A celery root soup was comforting and a starter of poached duck egg with mushrooms, kale, parmesan and prosciutto was decadent. Salmon was well cooked and moist. Lamb shank cassoulet was tender, albeit a bit underseasoned. The bartender makes a superb Manhattan and the wine list was well chosen and fairly priced, with an almost completely French list and good choices by the glass. Bottom line-I will be back."

I used to love this place but the
service has gotten very sloppy and frustrating. Previously there seemed to be more wait staff, perhaps tat is why it is so lax. The waiter mixed up our order...giving my friend a different dish than the one she ordered...and this last time, the vegetables were cold. Wen the dish was returned for reheating, it took ages to come back...and repeated requests for salt were ignored until we enlisted a bus boy to bring some. I miss the old service!"

Had a working lunch meeting. The

I don't mind paying premium prices
for very good food in the context of an excellent dining experience, but Bistro Vivant falls a bit short. The service was very good, the bread was excellent, and it is clear that these folks are trying. And I hope that they keep trying, because McLean really doesn't have a "special occasion" restaurant. However, at the end of the day, fine dining is about the food, and the food just didn't meet my expectations for the price. I believe I get a better meal with higher quality ingredients at Clyde's for less. Bottom line: McLean still lacks the outstanding fine dining restaurant it arguably deserves."

We have been coming here
occasionally since before it was sold to the present owners and the food has never been this interesting or this good before. The menu is not extensive, but everything looked tempting so it was hard to choose. My husband ordered the "cassoulet" which worried me inasmuch as he is a purist, and I was right in thinking this might be an original "take" on it. Well, we were both right--it was certainly not the cassoulet of his youth, but it was delicious. It was also very abundant, so we got two meals out of it; ditto for my steak/frites. In all, it feels like a polished good restaurant, bistro-style..we enjoyed everything."

The onion soup is just right, fois gras was exceptional (wanted more!) and the duck confit was some of the best I have ever had. I only wish that there was more space between tables and the wine list had more moderately priced options."

Food was very good, especially
their soup du jour (turnip soup). They made special accommodations for my friend & altered his meal to his liking. The owner stopped by twice to check on us. It was not intrusive & he was very friendly."

food choices on the menu and we really enjoy dining here. However, to bring this restaurant from good to great, it needs to focus on consistency and making sure it delivers hot food to the table even during the busiest time of the evening."

I used to frequent Bistro Vivant.
Then a chef that came in tried to make it mainly French delicacies and limited the choices for those of us that like French food...just not some of the 'specialties'. The menu offers plenty of French cuisine choices with some more mainstream main offerings. I hadn't been there for months and am glad I returned. Please keep this chef and menu (I know it changes somewhat seasonally). Their Hanger Steak is a winner and altho' their 'frites' are great...I opted for the salad substitution and it was great."

My wife and I had a weekend lunch
at Bistro Vivant. We ordered a bottle of wine and four appetizers/side dishes for a relaxing afternoon. The grilled octopus was outstanding, the steak tartare very good, the foie gras mousse excellent, and the frites cooked in duck fat with paprika aioli were also good. The service was attentive and friendly, but in a low-key, non-intrusive way. The wine selection, which was recommended by our server, was a very good choice. We've been here before and we'll be back again!"

I had heard some things bout this
restaurant but unfortunately I was pretty disappointed after dining here. Good things first... Their broiled octopus was great..by far the best thing we tasted. The ambience was pretty chill and staff was friendly Their French onion soup and two entrees we ordered were extremely forgettable and really lacked spice and flavor. The choc lava cakes were extremely bitter, pretty much a disaster. The cost was too expensive compared to the value we received. The service was extremely slow even with an relatively small crowd (maybe 4-5 tables dining). Waitress forgot one of our orders, barely apologized, and did not do anything to rectify the situation. Overall, your money can be better spent elsewhere."

We came for the Christmas day
lunch. The food was great. I had the prix fixe meal with lobster salad, filet mignon and chocolate tort. Everything was perfect. The new chef is really talented. However, the food came out very slowly and the place was not full. This could be a problem for someone in a hurry. Our server was quite nice and knowledgeable."

The boeuf bourgignon was perfect,
loved the touch of young parsnips and carrots. Might be the best I have had including in Paris. The fries were perfect. My lunch companion enjoyed the hangar steak. I found out only by going there that they serve weekend brunch. They advertise this no where! The menu was on the back of the daily specials! I have no idea what they offer for dessert as our meals were filling and that is not on their website either. I pointed this out to the waitress, but she dismissed my comments as unimportant. I go out for an omelet about 3 times a month so they have lost a lot of business potential with me already. Seems silly, but oh well."

This was our second New Year's Eve
at Bistro Vivant. last year everything was wonderful. This year was the opposite. The service was incredibly slow. After we had been sitting for about an hour the waiter came over to our table and told us that the dish that one person in our party had ordered was no longer available. This was unbelievable since we had an early reservation. We were so disappointed. The food was mediocre at best. a steak was order medium and it came out rare. I will say the management was very attentive and apologetic and made an serious adjustment to the bill. However, going our for new year's eve is a difference type of experience and it was very disappointing."

Years ago when we used to live in
the DC area, this restaurant space was home to, "Three Little Pigs', a southern BBQ joint. We were pleasantly surprised to find this new neighborhood gem while driving through the DC area for Christmas. Friendly service. Good Food. Nice wine list with nice house Cote du Rhone. The duck fat fries with the mussels were great as was the homemade pasta with lobster and a cream sauce. The prices were fair and setting was modern and inviting."

Bistro Vivant is a real addition
to the galaxy of neighborhood eateries in the McLean area. We enjoyed the best beet salad we've tried for years plus duck confit done to perfection and a very tasty Amish chicken. We'll certainly be back to try the fish! Desserts are home-made except the sorbets and ice-cream (we could manage only a shared portion of the latter, which was very good). Only slight blemish is the pricy wine-list: we hope the sommelier will find some quaffable bottles at a more moderate price."

The restaurant is located in a
strip mall but looks nice for the area. The inside is well lit during the day because of all the windows and the tables are nice. However, I found that one of my napkins had a dark stain on it. The waitress was nice and energetic but seemed a little too eager to involve herself in my party's personal conversations. Food service was slow and not worth the long wait. My party and I were at the restaurant for an hour and half before we were able to finish our meal. The only thing that came quickly was the bill. Overall, the food was okay. The escargot and mussels were decent and the bread was delicious as well as the lava cake. However, the french ham sandwich was a little too heavy on the cheese."

Broiled octopus was recommended
but I found it bland and strangely fatty. Flank steak was average. Veal chop was ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Side of spinach and pommes frites were perfect. Vanilla ice cream with cherries was $10 for a 1/4 cup of ice cream and morello cherries from Trader Joes -- ridiculous. Wines by glass were $12-14, a bit expensive for a neighborhood restaurant. Not sure we will go again."

We went to this restaurant because
it's close to home and other diners gave it high ratings. We were disappointed with the lack if "wow" factor. Food was fine. Service was ok. Ambience was fine. It all seemed rather perfunctory. We didn't feel special and it was my birthday. The waiter didn't even offer us dessert. Overall we felt that for the price we paid, we should have felt it was more of an occasion and less of just a meal."

On a slow Monday night, we were
surprised that our waiter was inattentive and not very helpful. Also, even though the restaurant was pretty empty, a fairly loud party of women were seated right next to us rather than spacing them out even a little. The food was very good - we had boeuf bourgignon and the hanger steak. I had to send mine back since I had requested the shallot sauce on the side and it was slathered all over. Again, not hard for a waiter to remember so that added a negative to our evening."

I invited some friends to join me
at Bistro Vivant because I knew they enjoyed good food and I had had good experiences in the past, but last Saturday it was all downhill. The service was spotty. There didn't seem to be enough staff to handle the diners. I had bragged on the octopus appetizer and it arrived tougher than nails and had to be sent back. The hanger steaks and frites were good, but a bit tougher than the last one I had at the restaurant. One guest ordered the boef bourguignon and declared it good, but the onions were not cooked. I expected better."

After church, my husband and I
were looking for a nice, quiet place to have brunch with good food. Bistro Vivant is just wonderful. The service is outstanding, absolutely outstanding. So nice and so helpful. The food was outstanding. We both had omelets, different ones. Delicious. Great, HOT coffee. Love my coffee hot."

I'm a very finicky eater
(pescatarian), like a good wine list, atmosphere is important, and customer service is the icing on the cake... If any of these relate to you, this is your place! Its French.. but offer daily specials, nice variety on menu, and kitchen is always accommodating. Bistro Vivant is my neighborhood place seeing popular figures there often. I frequent at least once a week. Love the owner and staff - genuinely friendly! You can enjoy outdoor dining, sitting at the vibrant bar, or dining with others in restaurant making you feel like you're sitting in a bistro in Paris."

Granted, the HVAC system was on
the fritz on Sunday, but they didn't tell us until I asked. It was HOT. In the winter it's way too cold as the doors on each end allow for all heat to leave everytime they open and they don't turn the heat up to compensate. I guess we'll have to confine our visits to Spring and Fall, which is a pity as the food here is excellent."
