Diner Reviews
  • "Came here "blind" (no real advance data) in February, and was blown away by wine pairings. Returned a second time with vegetarian daughter, and had a great meal. Returned a third time solo, and was astounded at the presentations, and pairings, prepared by the unassuming chef in a very low key (read, relaxing) environment. A true gem!"

  • "Good food and amazing wine list. We've been there a few times and often the chef is out and about talking to customers, checking in. Love it."

  • "As soon as I walked in the door, the owner/chef greeted me and took great interest in making sure I had the table of my choice. She watched over our whole dining experience from the kitchen where she does her magic. The waiter was very attentive and professional checking in at the appropriate times, not hovering. A great menu, well executed. Lots of appeal whether you are a red-meat fan, a vegetarian, whatever, she provides inventiveness and skill in everything she does. Highly recommend. Don't let the shopping center location keep you away…parking is easy!"

  • "Imaginative and thoughtful, the chef creates delectable dishes, and on the moment! In lieu of the duck [consumed for the night], chef crafted a perfectly tender Cornish game hen with wild berries and a lovely glaze for my companion. For me, parsnip "tagliatelle" in a lovely broth topped ginger miso griddled tofu and chanterelle tempura. Not to slight the menu, of course....the kale salad was young and lightly dressed with Pt. Reyes blue, for maximum flavor of both to come through.in balance The service is alert, but not intrusive. A rare and valuable resource in Marin!"

  • "A delicious and enjoyable meal. The petrale sole with clams was superb--wonderful clam sauce with some one of the finest preparation of clams I've ever eaten. The short rib papardelle was also delicious. It was hearty, French country-style, yet refined. Salads -- kale and beet were both extremely fresh and nicely prepared."

  • "We went to Bistro Vis a Vis based on reviews on Check Please. We came a half hour early and were seated, however since they had an on time reservation for 10 people, we were asked to wait to order. We were here with friends and were happy to wait giving us lots of time to talk. Our drink order was taken right away so we had drinks while waiting. We split our salads and the kitchen did this for us making it very easy. Two in our party ordered one of the specials, Duck Confit, which was, unfortunately a bit dry. One ordered the sea food stew and the dish was missing part of the listed ingredients. We were comped for one dessert as a result. We thought we would go again, perhaps for lunch. Maybe it was just an off evening."

  • "food here is always wonderful. owner/chef i fantastic; very friendly and warm. food is always very fresh and care is taken into preparing it. great wine list especially the promotions when you purchase a bottle you can have the next one for $5 and if you dont drink it there you can take it home.....love it :) severs very attentive."

  • "Food is always wonderful, great wine list, excellent pairing suggestions, attentive friendly service every time we go. We've also brought our own wine on occasion and they've been very accommodating. The atmosphere is just okay, but it's all about the food and wine. Prices are extremely reasonable for this level of quality."

  • "We love this place. You can't beat the clam chowder with whole clams, the fish taco's, mixed seafood pasta, and the mini donut rounds. Great wine list to boot."

  • "We'd heard great things about this restaurant, but our experience was pretty poor at every level. The service was surprisingly bad, given that this is supposed to be a somewhat upscale place. Our server was ignorant, inattentive, and disorganized. Amateurish service can negatively color a dining experience, but sometimes the food can make up for the service. Not in this case. The food in all instances was mediocre at best. For the prices being charged here, I would have expected significantly better quality at every level. I can forgive a dish here or there missing the mark, but when they all miss, it says something about the underlying quality and competence of the restaurant. Really sad. I had expected much better."

  • "Incredible food, fantastic wine list. Made reservation for 6 pm. Place was half full. By 6:45 it was packed and stayed that way unti we left at 8:30 - and beyond I'm sure. We'll definitely be back."

  • "We have greatly enjoyed this restaurant in the past and all things considered will do so again. Being Valentine's Day the restaurant was fully booked. Service was wildly off and clearly overwhelmed even though a limited menu was offered. Had to remind server what course was next, that we hadn't received wine pairings as ordered, whose dish was whose, that we hadn't received dessert and we were never even offered coffee. Not sure all courses came out of kitchen as intended... Tipped only 15% which we rarely do... We think many diners would not have tipped at all ... considering it was a holiday we couldn't do that."

  • "Sadly, they had a very off night for Valentine's Day dinner that proved to be disappointing. Total for their prix fix with wine pairing and tip for two came to $300 - a price point which I thought would deliver a stellar meal in this strip mall eatery. While the first two courses were fairly good, the main course featured seared Ahi served over a bed of uncooked, inedible quinoa. Dessert was butterscotch soup (as opposed to pudding). Timing was completely off with inconsistencies that are really unacceptable for a restaurant that was only serving 10 items that night (again at $150/person). I am reluctant to go back for another $300 gamble that they might get it right. I saw Kim in the kitchen and Lichtblau seated us so there is no excuse."

  • "The Bon Air Shopping Center doesn't appear to be your typical boring mall, and it even has a vague feeling of elegance to it. Other Open Table reviewers were equally impressed by the seemingly incongruous combination of fine dining and a mall, so we decided to give it a try during our day in Marin. You certainly don't FEEL like you're going to get amazing food and service when you enter the small restaurant that fits into one of the mall's boxes, but the chef owner and the waitstaff do all they can to make sure you'll leave totally pleased with the experience. Freshly prepared, unique appetizers and entrees and an unusual wine list from adventurous wineries. Worth a return visit!"

  • "A beautiful meal this Valentine's day. Price fixe. Perfect food. Perfect wine. Old timers and newcomers sharing the secret of Marin's finest. Ah."

  • "In the Bonaire shopping center. Plenty of parking. Linguine with BACON, two eggs, kale and red pepper flakes, Parmesan, was yummy. Wines are interesting. Higher priced, but a good pour. A real wine aficionado will love reading the various descriptions. Also, Seafood Stew with squid ink pasta was very good. Hot lava cake was more a hot pudding, but still tasty. Quiet, only 4 tables in use on a Tues eve for us early birds. Eat and get home for Olympics"

  • "Soo Young, the chef and owner is a great talent. She constantly seeks to explore new recipes with good results. I had a pasta dish with lobster and squid. The sauce was made with Lobster roe. Delicious. Eric was our server and I believe a part owner as well. He's very pleasant and personable (as is Soo Young). After I ordered the pasta dish, Eric brought over a Greek wine suggested by Soo Young to go with the dish. I had already ordered a wine, but the suggested wine was perfect with the dish. My only quibble with this restaurant is it needs some added touches to improve the ambience. It's in a shopping center in a very small space, so they don't have a lot of room to maneuver, and therefore I give some a partial pass."

  • "Don't let the location in the Bon Air Center put you off. This is a classy, pleasant restaurant with delicious food. For example, the clam chowder is a tasty creamy broth with whole clams in the shell in it. Yummy. The petrale sole is melt in your mouth and the fish tacos are a lot more than you might expect. Friendly, efficient service and a very good wine list with almost everything available by the glass."

  • "I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bistro Vis a Vis serves the most refined, tasty, fresh, seasonal, local and (often) organic food in Marin. And the proprietors and wait staff treat each diner as a friend dining in their home. It doesn't get any better. Tonight we spent our 20th anniversary at Vis a Vis and, despite all of our picky requests, we were treated beyond well, each request met with aplomb. A 5 sumptuous 5-course dinner with perfectly paired wines. Thank you Vis a Vis. We look forward to our Valentine's dinner in your charming Bistro."

  • "Arriving at Bistro Vis a Vis, I would never expect to find a restaurant of this caliber in a shopping center next to a mediocre diner. But when you walk in, you find a warm greeting and a pleasant, calm environment. Soo Young, the owner/chef/sommelier, is everywhere. Her food is wonderful; the menu changes constantly and there are daily specials. But if you want something different, she is extremely accommodating. This is a terrific place for vegetarians and vegans. There may not be something that works on the menu but Soo Young is quick to suggest different options that are creative and delicious. The wine list is amazing and there are dozens of choices by the glass. The service has been very professional. Don't miss Vis a Vis!"

  • "Four of us ate dinner together at Vis a Vis. All our entrees were delicious and beautiful, even my simple green salad was very flavorful and reasonably priced. The wine list was interesting, varied and well priced. Our waiter was really helpful getting us a table that would accommodate our special needs. The noise level was perfect, our hearing challenged members were able to hear the conversation. I look forward to going back!"

  • "We were amazed to find this very good little restaurant tucked away in a mall. Our beet salad, which we shared, was beautifully presented; our companion declared her clam chowder excellent. Two of us ordered the seafood stew which consisted of an abundance of clams, mussels and shrimp bathed in a tasty slightly spicy sauce. The excellent warm bread allowed us to soak up every bit of the sauce. The others in our party ordered the fish tacos, also very tasty. Coffee was fragrant and freshly brewed. The restaurant is simply but attractively furnished; I especially liked the tableware, modern and functional. The very charming owner takes the time to greet her patrons at every table. We will certainly go back!"

  • "For my birthday my bride took me to BVaV.... She had a dandy Italian rose from Montepulciano. I had a glass of Spanish white. We split the fried calamari special, the grilled romain hearts. She had the lobster linguini special and I had the clam chowder. Split the special for dessert.. An apple tart. A wonderful birthday dinner."

  • "My pasta and mussels were delicious and priced well. But, there is nothing priced in-between. Marin unfortunately does not have particularly good restaurants, which always surprises me, so this one is better than many, but if I want more than pasta my meal would have been 2x the price. For a neighborhood place it's pricey."

  • "I've been going to this place for the past year or so. It's great for a romantic meal. Food is great and so is service. The funny part is finding it. VERY well hidden in the Bon Aire mall. But that's part of the charm."

  • "Located in the Bon Air Shopping Center, this bistro tries very hard. Their limited menu contains wonderful taste sensations. The room itself leaves one a bit cold as all the primarily two-tops are very close together. I can imagine in the daytime with the outdoor area buzzing the eating environment would be better. Service seemed to be just o.k. They were either breaking in some new waiters or they were overstretched. Seemed to be having computer problems as well. If you like bringing your own special bottle of wine - beware, as the corkage is $25/bottle - and we basically still poured our own. Still, the limited good restaurants in Marin should be supported. We'll go back to this good one!"

  • "Fabulous attention to guests' particular tastes and dietary needs! The menu is imaginative and diverse, and the variations on those themes that chef creates are even more remarkable. Our hidden gem for excellent dining in an area (Marin) not noteworthy for culinary accomplishment--but in fairness to a talented and hardworking chef and staff, we feel compelled to share it."

  • "After being taken to Farmshop and been disappointed I realized I had to have a Bistro Vis a Vis fix to readjust my foodie karma. My bride and I started with a split of the house greens with the pickled radish.... bright and refreshing as always. My bride had the Seafood Stew with mussels, calamari and shrimp and a glass of the classic Sancerre. I had the capellini with lobster roe emulsion topped with lobster and baby octopus and a killer Skouras white from Greece. Yowser! Finished with a little Affogato. Next time I'm jonesin' for fish I won't be driving to Sausalito, i'll just jump back to Bistro Vis a Vis. btw this was the first time with our server, Zach. Super knowledgeable about both the wine and the food."

  • "Marin is supposedly ground zero for the organic/sustainable food movement, yet it isn't easy to find restaurants in Marin that do more than pay lip service to the terms organic and sustainable, usually only in a general footnote on the menu, while a minority of menu items are in fact organic. The Marin branch of The Plant Cafe is hardcore 100% organic, but is cold and fast-foodesque, nothing like its SF branch along the Embarcadero. So, where to go, when you want all (or virtually all) organic food, fit for foodies, in a chic setting? Bistro Vis-a-Vis is the place! It is a storefront in Bon Air shopping center, but the owners have made it warm, hospitable and upscale for the setting, and the cuisine beats Farmshop by a long mile."

  • "My husband is vegetarian, and when we first looked at the menu, there was very little for him. The chef came over to our table, and he told her his needs. She said, no problem, and came up with a gorgeous papardelle with wild mushrooms that was delicious! This restaurant is high on our list of favorites now! I am not vegetarian, and I loved the Capellini with Lobster Roe -- awesome!"
