Diner Reviews
  • "The food was okay - my pasta dish too rich, but my main complaint is how they dumped the plates on the table, and tried to grab them while we were still eating. "

  • "Dinner prior to an event at the Cathedral of St John the Divine was super. Friendly, attentive -but not intrusive - staff was great as always. Two of us enjoyed a great meal composed of a couple of starters. Scallops were tender and cooked just right. Who knew there were so many different types of beets? Desserts were rational in size and delightful in taste. Bistro Ten 18 is a true neighborhood gem for both lunch and dinner."

  • "I went to the restaurant this time (having been several times before) as kind of a birthday treat for myself. The service was excellent and the food very good, so it was a good birthday experience!"

  • "My husband and I always eat at Bistro Ten 18 on his birthday, and we take visitors here for dinner. Really a nice, peaceful place with excellent food."

  • "This is restaurant that has great food and 99% of our food was great. An accompaniment to one entree was awful. The server apologized and provided a replacement side dish. The restaurant also bought us a round of drinks and offered dessert on the house. However, we were never offered bread--we had to ask for it. Everytime we wanted something from our server, we had to ask that someone find him. Then our server informed us that he was at the end of his shift and left during the meal. After that, we sat for as much as 15 minutes with no one available for us to ask for anything else. Although everyone was very pleasant, the lack of attention was a big disapointment."

  • "I had lobster bisque, which tasted more like cream with tomato sauce than lobster, even with the bits of lobster floating. The pork shoulder, though, was quite good. The choice in wine buy the glass was better than it had been previously."

  • "Went for brunch ...had to remind server to bring bloody Mary...which arrived after food was served. Serve made two stops to check on coffee...first time filled my wife's cup while ignoring mine. Second time, filled mine while ignoring my wife's emptllljust not the expected level of attention. We were seated in the windowless room which lacked any acoustical treatment....got extremely noisy at its peak. Next time I would look for table in front room or eat at the bar.p"

  • "Good place for lunch near Columbia U & Cathedral of St John the Divine."

  • "I had a Groupon for two, come here to celebrate my sister in law's birthday, my brother also came. My brother had the striped bass in which he said,"this is sublime". My sister in law had the fresh made fettuccine with a sea food combination, in which she described as good. I had the salmon with the butternut squash. I could have eaten a whole bowl of the butternut squash it was delicious. The portions could have been more the fish was such a tiny piece and only one butternut squash come with my dish. The menu is pricey disappointed with the portions. I'm glad I had a Groupon."

  • "We had a wonderful meal at Ca Va. It's conveniently located in the theater district but lacks the touristy feel of many other local spots -- a welcome difference in ambiance. The servers and maitre'd were extremely attentive and we tout of their way to accommodate some food allergies of our guests. Particularly delicious were the scallops over risotto and the Salmon over greens with apples. A true gem from Todd English!! We will be back."

  • "The service was very good, but my turkey burger was raw in the middle."

  • "My husband and I went for date night with a groupon we purchased. His sea scallops appetizer was delicious. My beet salad and goat cheese appetizer left a lot to be desired. With so many delicious and creamy goat cheeses out there, the one in this salad was dry and hard. My husband had the skirt steak and it was delicious. I had the chicken breast. It was good, the polenta was a great side for this but there were so many onions that everything tasted of onion only. We also had a carafe of sangria. The sangria was good but there was so much ice we hardly got any sangria. It was disappointing. I would go back, but only with a Groupon. Otherwise this place is way overpriced for mediocre food."

  • "Food is always great, especially the daily specials. There are two rooms, the bar area and another adjacent area with a gas fireplace. Both rooms are pleasant and different from one another, The wait staff is attentive and the drinks are perfect."

  • "Had Saturday brunch here, and quite enjoyed an inventive menu, well-prepared dishes and a nice view of St. John the Divine. Would return and sit at the bar, as the fireplace room is noisy and bland."

  • "This place is a neighborhood gem. Often filled with Columbia students and professors, it stands apart from other area haunts. While not considered a "trendy, foodie place", it has been consistently above average in my experience. The menu has become more sophisticated and varied. Great salads and delicious seared scallops with potato roti were perfect. The waiter was friendly and professional. And, how do you top a roaring fire in the midst of a cold snap?"

  • "Bistro Ten 18 is a great place for dinner. Varied menu with terrific specials. I have never been disappointed. Wait staff is very attentive and accommodating. Drinks are made well and there's a decent wine list."

  • "Small but cozy atmosphere with a fireplace in the dinning room. Food was exceptional...Maine Lobster Bisque, Seared Sea Scallops, Roasted Wild Striped Bass and Grilled Skirt Steak all wonderful. Wait staff very attentive. Although we were introduced to this restaurant by using a Groupon would definitely go back again when we are in town."

  • "It was my first time here and it was a lovely place for brunch. The area is quiet nice on a Sunday, especially with the St. John the Devine Catherdal across the street. Price for most brunch type food like Eggs Benedict is reasonable, but for Al a Carte items and sides, $5.00 each is too much."

  • "The food and service were very good. The wait staff was attentive. The best part on cold winter night was the blazing fireplace...very cozy for a Sunday night dinner. It was a great place to meet our son and his girlfriend for dinner."

  • "The best of what a warm neighborhood eatery should be. Vibrant, gracious, delicious. So happy it is on the Upper West Side."

  • "Live jazz. Restaurant space is somewhat loud. Jazz is loudish for the space, but not problematic. I had fun and ate well. I will return ...and hope you check it out!"

  • "This was my first visit & I'll definitely go back. The menu items are interesting, made with carefully selected items. It has a quaint atmosphere and while we had lunch there, I'm sure it's charming for dinner."

  • "Food was good, but places was a bit shabby around the edges."

  • "Overall, our experience was very good. We were seated promptly, and the waitstaff was very attentive. The restaurant itself is very dimly lit with lots of seating by the windows. The food was good. The portions were very big. They have a happy hour from 4-7pm at the bar. I'll definitely be back for that."

  • "I wanted to like this place more than the poor service allowed. I would stop by for oysters and a glass of wine if I were in the neighborhood but I won't travel to the neighborhood specifically to go to this restaurant again."

  • "We arrived early for our reservation, the hostess was very amiable and showed us to a corner table. Appetizers were very good and the main meal (seafood) was cooked to perfection. My friend from Switzerland really enjoyed the home atmosphere and the great service. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Food and wine good -- service needs improvement. Location is excellent and certain tables facing northeast afford a wonderful view of the Close of Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the seat of the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York."

  • "This little bistro situated across from St John the Divine has a great low-key ambiance and super friendly staff. The food choices are quite good and decently imaginative with fair pricing."

  • "Went here before a concert at St John The Divine (Winter Solstice) and it's literally across the street from the church so it was convenient and had good reviews. Got a drink at the bar while waiting for my guest and had a delicious Gin Gimlett, well made. Great treatment from staff, specials were great and food was delicious. Got the special pasta, homemade and delicious. Plan to go back when in that area concert or not. Great experience."

  • "We looked forward to returning to Bistro 1018 and were not disappointed. We had very fresh oysters, and four sizable salads and appetizers, all delicious and nicely presented. A great Muscadet with the oysters, and other very enjoyable wines by the glass with other dishes, including a toasty Prosecco. Look forward to returning, service friendly and efficient. Surprisingly, the bar was quieter than the dining room. a very boisterous group leading the din.Ah well, 'tis the season."

  • "Dinner was delicious an d we stuffed ourselves silly, ordering everything that sounded good. It all ended up tasting as good (if not even better) than it sounded, so we'll be back to try the rest of everything on the menu...!"

  • "Unfortunately, dinners seated upstairs 9even though in a somewhat separate space from the small bar are subjected to the same musical selection and VOLUME that is playing in the bar. My table was farther from the bar and we had to repeat much of what was said. Noticably quieter between songs when the conversation volume at all the tables drops. I recommend passing on upstairs seating if you have any conversational intentions."

  • "My dates salmon was noticeably smaller than those served at other tables. He spoke to the manager and, they graciously brought an additional serving. My pork ragout was outstanding. But, we were never told about the Prix Fixe that was available. We ordered many of the same choices but our bill was $20 higher than it would have been. When I asked about it they insisted the server had told me."

  • "We often eat at Bistro 1018. I prefer to go there at quieter times of day, so it's best to get there early, for weekend brunch at 11 am and for lunch on weekdays. It's professionally run, the menu is straightforward and generally well done, and they have a good wine list. In addition it's in a part of the upper west side that's relatively out of the way, so that it's seldom too noisy and crowded."
