Diner Reviews
  • "For those who are looking for a true taste of Italy in Philadelphia, you will find it at Bistro Romano. This establishment is elegant but runs with the feel of a genuine, intimate family run restaurant. If you don't see exactly what you want on the menu, just ask and I assure you the chef will create it for you. I have never had a anything but a delicious meal at Bistro! The service is amazing ~ 3 different wait staff during my last 3 visits have confirmed that this restaurant has high expectations for insuring a wonderful dining experience~ hiring amazing staff who are knowledgeable about the food and also clearly love what they do. Bistro Romano is where I go for a fine dining experience, an intimate meal or a family celebration."

  • "I came to bisto ramono with my boyfriend for aspecial occasion. The food was amazing and it was resonably priced. The only negative I have about this place is where I was sat. We got the worst seat in the house RIGHT by the kitchen and the arrive isle. It's kind of difficult to enjoy a romantic dinner when all I can hear is the servers "colorful" language rigt behind me. Also person shining the wine glasses was awkwardly hovering behind me the whole time. But none the less, I will absolutely come back!"

  • "Don't be lured to Bistro Romano by the photos of an attractive wine cellar dining experience...the place is loud, cramped and uninspiring. The food is sub par with veal saltimbocca swimming in a watery sauce. The only thing positive was a decent wine list. No valet parking."

  • "The food was not so good. I am always suspicious of a menu with too many options. My suspicions were justified, filet was a poor quality , the shrimp and scallops included in a pasta dish were from a can. Great atmosphere, disappointing food."

  • "Monday is pasta night and we had an exquisite pasta dish with truffles which matched the Tuscan wine absolutely beautifully!"

  • "Attended a concert with friends on Spruce St. The pleasant evening persuaded a walk thru historic Society Hill to the restaurant. Great location, outstanding service by all the staff, menu to please everyone in our group and all well prepared and presented dishes."

  • "Our favorite romantic birthday spot. This year we took our two daughters, and they loved it as well! Such a great atmosphere. The food is consistently out of this world!"

  • "Restaurant did not live up to ratings. Swordfish ($30) was dry and almost tasteless. Waitress was somewhat overbearing. My wife had carpaccio which was almost meatless.... the small amount of beef was in a stew of moist veggies which watered it down to tasteless!"

  • "Came here with two friends on a Wednesday night. They have a special on Wednesday night were you can order an appetizer, entree and dessert for $35. The food was delicious, but the service was a bit slow, which was a little odd given that it was pretty empty. One of my friend's is gluten and dairy free and they were very accomodating. The ambiance is amazing, you can feel the historicalness of the building all around. In short I enjoyed it and the server even recommended a nice bar around the corner that had live music and we continued to enjoy the night :)"

  • "We had a very nice dinner at this Philadelphia eatery. Food was well prepared and presented. Service was attentive. The piano music was a welcome addition."

  • "The place itself looks nice but the food is average. It was pretty pricey. I have no problem paying for food that is amazing and this was not."

  • "Awful. Even the decor is cheap looking, the cheap silverware, the plastic vines etc. Ceasar salad poorly seasoned, so much parmesan you can't taste the lettuce and for $10.00 to top it off. The veal couldn't be cut with regular knife, had to ask for steak knife. Side vegetable medley looked unappetizing. Plain awful and expensive."

  • "when reserving on line it looked like the only options for table were 5:15 or 9 PM when in fact numerous tables were open between 6-7 when we were leaving."

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday here on Saturday night and the food and service were truly exceptional. Our waiter Nolan, as well as the rest of the staff were friendly, paid the perfect amount of attention, and provided us with incredibly detailed, knowledgeable information about the food, wine and the restaurant in general. We shared the calamari appetizer (amazing), the Caesar salad, prepared tableside, (yum) and I was still dreaming about my pasta & seafood when I woke up the next morning. My husband had one of the specials of the evening, OssoBucco stuffed homemade ravioli and it was as wonderful as Nolan assured him it would be. We were too stuffed for desert but greatly enjoyed the complimentary cappucino and limoncello!"

  • "WOW !!!!! What a find this is our new favorite restaurant. Great bar , and the best pasta i have ever tasted. Service was excellent , not to fast but was always there if you needed anything. At the end of the meal i had to call our waiter Tim over to explain the check i thought he made a mistake on the bill it was so reasonable. We are looking forward to next weekend to try lunch."

  • "The overall experience was very good here. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner and she loved it. It is very dimly lit here, but that is typical when you go to a nice romantic place like Bistro Romano. They also had a coat check at no charge at the door as well. We both got the Shrimp Scallop Venezia dish, and it was excellent. I would get that again when I go back. The waiter was also very accommodating. They forgot to give us our food, however, when we asked for it to be wrapped up. That usually is not an issue, though, as there must have just been a communication issue there. If you are looking for a place to go on a date, or to go with family or friends for a nice Italian meal, you can't go wrong with Bistro Romano."

  • "Parking is always a problem in Old City, so get there early. Food was delicious. Went for celebration dinner. Several people at my table got raviolli stuffed with sunflower seeds and ricotta cheese with a red sauce. Superb. Others got a roast duck, which was incredible. I ordered angel hair pasta with red sauce, various cheeses, and vegetables. Also superb. Services was very good in that they always checked on us, were extremely helpful Ambiance was perfect for this occasion. The lighting was calm. Not too loud but loud enough to sound lively. There were children there that night (~8 PM), and even if they were crying, it wasn't too loud and interfering with our conversation. Highly recommend for celebration or romantic evening."

  • "Every year, my wife and I go to celebrate our birthdays. The Cesar salad is the best that we have ever had. They custom make it at your table, so it is never soggy and their home made croutons are never stale tasting. The dressing is like none we have ever had, flavorful but not overpowering. Our servers have been wonderful—attentive and full of good suggestions, especially about the specials. We plan on going to this restaurant for a long time to celebrate special occasions."

  • "this hit the spot for a spontaneous craving of italian food! we shared a couple of apps and an entree and dessert and could not decide what we enjoyed the most! well worth the cold trek!"

  • "Everyone in the restaurant was pleasant and the food was average. My wife and I both ordered double espressos to end the meal. What we felt we received were two half cups of coffee, not espressos and we were charged for 4 espressos. Putting a lemon peel on the saucer does not make it an espresso!! I have never been charged for a double in that manner ."

  • "This place was great. The building itself has a old rustic look and feel which adds to the ambiance. The food was good but it was more the experience of the whole restaurant that made it a perfect romantic spot"

  • "We had dinner at Bistro Romano this past Saturday. While the food was good & the waiter was friendly & attentive, the manager had an attitude & it changed our opinion of the experience. Our entrees arrived & my husband's food came with a side of potatoes and a vegetable. I went to take a potato and it was cold. The tool box manager happened to be walking around asking random tables how the food was. I said that they were cold & he quickly replaced them but he was not friendly or apologetic. Little things like this change my impression of a restaurant/dining experience. We saw him when we were leaving and he walked right by, no thank you or have a good evening. They need to hire managers with better people skills. We will not be back."

  • "One of the greatest dining experiences we've had! If you are looking for amazing food with a side of romance, this is the place. Order the Caesar salad. It is made table side and awesome."

  • "This was my first time dining at Bistro Romano, and I can assure you it will not be my last. The manager Alex and I had spoken earlier that evening about putting a bottle of wine on the table, because it was a special occassion. Well he took my information and went completely over the top with putting rose petals on the table, along with complimentary items in addition to our meal. I have never been treated like such a VIP before and I have not stopped letting everyone I know about my wonderful experience."

  • "We were seeing a show in town and thought this would be a great place to cap off the afternoon. It didn't hurt that I had a $20.00 birthday certificate fromn the place for being on their email list. The home town favorite is just the right place for great food which we all enjoyed. The service was wonderful and the food was paced just right. We were there on a Sunday and with bad weather looming for the later part of the day,the place still entertained quite a few groups.Usually we can save room fro dessert and so we didn't get an appetizer.Well dessert never happened because the portions of our meals, including the veal with shrimp, eggplant parm and the grouper special were so delicious and filling no room left."

  • "Went here to celebrate an anniversary. Perfect spot for this! Excellent wait staff, dim lighting, romantic atmosphere. They pack the people in but this doesn't take away from the feeling of being separate from the other diners. We both had seafood dishes which were excellent. Caesar Salad was as good as they say. Also, for two dinners, two salads, two glasses of champagne AND wine, $100 bill - totally awesome!"

  • "The good was delicious and portions were rather larger. We had to ask quite a few times for water but after they finally refilled, they came back often. The only real issue was that the light at our table was incredibly bright. Other than that, the atmosphere is great and romantic. The history of the place is notable but isn't displayed anywhere that I saw. That would have been nice to be able to read while sipping on our pre-dinner drinks. I will absolutely return!"
