A word from Bistro Pastis
A convivial atmosphere, enhanced by the cozy fire place, invites diners to linger a while. Dinner tables are set with crisp linens, making you feel like a welcome guest at a friend’s home. If meeting a friend for a drink or appies, have a seat along the bar, where there’s great people-watching. Pastis is as close as you can get to Paris without a plane ticket. It has one of the city’s largest wine selections by the glass. Very romantic.

. Traditional Coq au Vin

  • "Pastis delivers consistent delicious French bistro food. Service is unobtrusive and efficient. Absolutely wonderful lamb shanks!"

  • "We can't count how many times we have been to Bistro Pastis but we always enjoy fabulous food, great service and the unsurpassed friendliness and hospitality of owner frontman John. Thank you once again John. The Princess says hi!"

  • "I actually love this Kits bistro. Mellow yellow walls make it feel sunny in the day and soothing at night. The food is wonderful. Had the special which was delicious, arctic char and scallops over a bed of risotto and asparagus> Not hurried service and just the right amount of bustle and enjoyment of diners all over the room. Wonderful fireplace going on chilly days and lots of special seats to choose from. Wait staff are attentive but not in your face. Always helpful in assisting a diner with any food sensitivities such as myself. A go-to restaurant for a ladies lunch or a bite before or after a show."

  • "I lunched here with a friend and we had a wonderful time - it was comfortable, excellent service, warm and well appointed. The frites were very good but our salads were only fair - we would both return but order something else - the duck confit was very good. There is a good selection of wines by the glass and it offers a lovely space in which to enjoy a friend's company."

  • "Went for lobster bisque that was on the menu linked thru open table. No lobster bisque. Had daily soup, bacon lentil, it was ok bit thin. Had steak with gorgonzola sauce. Great sauce but steak wasn't good enough for $28. Love having a good French restaurant in the hood, wish all the food was good not just some. We're not there to guess what may be good when spending over $120."

  • "This neighbourhood gem is always worth the visit. Attentive and knowledgeable staff. The menu is good but the specials are the highlight of any visit. Innovative treatment of many locally-supplied items combines responsible sourcing with great cuisine. Very nice selection of wines from the southeast of France in particular. The basket of fresh-baked lemon and chocolate Madeleines is a perfect finish to a meal. Highly recommended."

  • "The food was not in the same league as other similar French restaurants in town. Two of us had the steak frites. Fries were quite average and the steak was small, gristly and fatty. All in all food that was not that great and quite overpriced. Staff were very good. We won't be returning unfortunately."

  • "Food is predictably good, service is attentive, a nice bistro to have around in the west side. Good for many occasions: a group, a couple, or a family with adult or teenage children."

  • "I love this restaurant. The food and service is consistently great and the menu and specials are diverse. I never run out of things to order despite dining here several times a month. Jean is a great host and clearly loves his restaurant."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this hopping bistro. The menu is quite large and there were interesting specials too. We enjoyed a special fois gras and pear terrine, scallop risotto with braised fennel, duck breast, grilled tenderloin. It was my son's birthday and they brought his chocolate profiteroles with a candle, a song and "Happy Birthday" in chocolate on the plate."

  • "This was our 15th Valentines day dinner at Bistro Bastis. And as always, it was superb. John is a consumate host, our wait staff was excellent and the food simply sublime. We wil keep going back to Pastis as long as its doors are open."

  • "We went to the Valentine's dinner with a special menu only being available to find every item on it was perfectly prepared and served as if done uniquely for you. It was amazing food."

  • "Pastis was a great choice for Valentine's supper. We booked 6 weeks ahead, tables fill up fast on popular nights. Dinner was a set 5 course menu, meat-based, so as a vegetarian and other dietary restrictions, we needed too let the restaurant know ahead of time. Pastis were very accommodating and the options were excellent. Tables were squished together so seating was tight, but it was Valentine's... the meal itself was not rushed though. Wonderful experience. Highly recommended!"

  • "This is one of our favourite places but they slipped a bit on Valentines. They added extra tables and had a set menu to maximize the night but we think the kitchen was a bit overstressed. Lobster was tough and overcooked, one our filet's had to be sent back as overdone, table next to us sent back dishes as well. Staff was great however, accommodating GF needs nicely on a busy night and were quick to fix the steak. Overall we ended up feeling we had spent a lot of money for a mediocre meal. Not up to Pastis usually excellent standard so we will try again."

  • "I have worked in 41 different countries in my career, favoring many restaurants. I have found that the first mitigating factor of a great restaurant is its management, and how they interact with their customers. My wife and I come to Bistro Pastis for perhaps six of so times a year, keeping it for special events, such as St. Valentines' Day. As soon as we walked in the door, John welcomed us as if we dined there every evening. This is something I do not see in most restaurants in Vancouver, where the civility of fine dinning seems to be in sharp decline."

  • "My husband and I were here on San Valentine's Day, the menu was the same for everyone, 5 course dishes for 85.00/per person,.. The lobster was hard to cut and the beef tenderloin was over cut,... The test of the foods was OK, nothing special!!! The restaurant was very full, and I notice they are not use to it, the waiters were almost runing for attending everyone, sometime they made mistake and attended tables that arrived after the first!!! The owner was helping as well, he is very very nice, and like to talk with the clients!!! My husband go there very often for lunch and the food is excellent!!! I recomend this restaurant, generally is very good!!!"

  • "The night started well but then went downhill in a flash. Service was prompt to take our orders from the DOV menu. It was when we noticed the owner/mgr spoke with other tables but yet ignored us. To cap this insensitivity, the server ended up taking my full entree (after I requested it to be packed up) and put a pair of dirty cutlery on top of my plate before whisking it away & I heard the scraping sound of my whole entree go in the garbage. The server had come by much earlier to ask if there was anything wrong w/my meal. Told him I was too full but he never asked if I would like my lamb entree to be packed up or not. Thank goodness the dessert made up for it. A very expensive $38 dessert that night."

  • "Really tasty food at Bistro Pastis. We've been here a few times and it is a nice comfortable place for a romantic dinner. One negative, my wife really enjoys sablefish, but hers was a little undercooked (it was a thick piece) and by itself was not that flavourful. Also, the artichokes in the escargot appetiser were a bit chewy and should be trimmed better. It is a minor thing and otherwise the escargot (with gnocchi, cherry tomatoes, etc.) was really good. The seared scallops appetiser and my duck confit entree were really good. Excellent service, nice wine, overall the dinner was great!"

  • "This restaurant offers a reliable North-Americanised version of French dining. The language is English, the dishes depend (a little too much) on produce and meat readily available in local Vancouver markets. It's French, but only just. The staff are efficient and reasonably friendly. Overall one has the feeling of eating comfort food, and that is OK, of course. The restaurant's main claim to "fame" is that it always produce the same quality--of food and of service. It is consistent. That is a considerable accomplishment."

  • "As is usual with Dine Out Vancouver, the food was only okay. Everything is being mass produced and so everything is good, but not much is great. I had the escargot (first experience with escargot - good but a bit chewy - more about what's on them than the escargots themselves and the garlic/cheese/etc mixture was naturally delicious), braised lamb (not nearly as tender as I would have hoped for...probably underbraised - sauce was good but just tasted like a typical beef stew), and the dark chocolate mousse (delicious but not very mousse'like as it was much more like a dense pudding than a smooth and light mousse in the traditional sense). I am fully willing to grant leeway as Dine Out is demanding. Would try them again."

  • "Had been to Bistro Pastis before and liked it however this occasion my meal was not so good. The remaining people of our group enjoyed their meal but mine was not good......the steak was very gristly and hard to eat..in fact I did not finish my steak. This was mentioned to our server but nothing was done to make a bad situation better."

  • "First off, the service was good. The food arrived very quickly and the restaurant was very well serviced. The ambience was cozy and good for couples, friends. I had the escargot gratinee and it had sand in it, the sole Normandy lacked a certain spice, it was bland but fairly good.the appetizer and entree was good, but the dessert was not to my liking at all. Creme brûlée is one of the simplest yet most difficult dishes to make. The creme brûlée was not good at all, it was cold, too sweet and too hard."

  • "A group of six of us had supper at Bistro Pastis on Saturday night. The restaurant was over crowded and very noisy. My friend and I both ordered the steak and both of us had to send it back. It was a cheap cut of meat, over cooked and tough as nails. I've had better steak and french fries at the restaurant at Zellers! When we complained they did bring us a different meal but by then everyone else had finished their meals and it was awkward."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for dinner to celebrate her birthday the service was excellent, the food very good, and they personalized her dessert with her own candle and Happy Birthday message. She loved it and we both appreciated the personal touch."

  • "We went during Dine Out Vancouver and found the service to be excellent! Myself and my companion tried different appetizers, entrees and desserts, and though all were quite good, the escargot was better than the tart, the sole/shellfish better than the lamb and the flan better than the mousse. The sole was exquisitely, perfectly cooked. The lamb had a robust and delicious flavour, but was a little on the chewy side, not the tender texture I expected. Both desserts were garnished with berries, but the mousse was a little heavy/dry for my taste, though in its favour it was darkly chocolate and not overpoweringly sweet. The flan, however, was melt-in-your mouth delicious. At dine-out prices, a good value, pushed up a little with wine."

  • "It's been a while that I've seen a waiter drying/polishing wine glasses and checking them against the light or drying/polishing cutlery in a Vancouver restaurant. The food tasted very good and the presentation was nice. The appetizers very presentable and tasty but the New York steak was unreasonably tough! The well made peppercorn sauce and the classic frites that came together were good. I like them crispier but my companion prefer them the way they were served. The Sole Normande got high marks; could use some more seasoning though. All desserts went nicely down! All in all a very pleasant night out in a cosy, well appointed dining room were the host and staff greeted you warmly catering to you in a friendly, professional manner."

  • "We recently visited Bistro Pastis during Dine Out Vancouver. A very charming restaurant with excellent wait staff. The Dine Out Menu options were varied and what we ordered was delicious. The wine pairings suggested with the food were appropriate and complimented the tastes. We will definitely return."

  • "Menu very appealing. Escargot #1, saumon tarttar delectable, mushroom chevre scrumptious. Sole seafood all dente - sauce light, but without spice or herbs. Mousse chocolate & cream Brule - parfait! Bread, a passionate love story with the baker."

  • "Went to this restaurant for Dine Out. The fact that it was Dine Out may explain our experience. It gave fast food a new meaning. We had the 3 course dinner and were seated, ordered, finished all 3 courses and paid the bill in 46 minutes. It looked as if extra tables had been squeezed in so there was no room between tables. Food was good but very disappointed with pace of meal and lack of ambience."

  • "We were dining in Bistro Pastis to check out their dine-out Vancouver menu and were not disappointed. When we arrived at 7:30 the restaurant was bursting with guests and thus it was a bit loud, but nothing you couldn't get along with. The three-way menu for $28 was a great combination of a very soft but spicy gratinee as a starter, followed by a marvellous braised lamb with potatoes and a very nice and thick chocolate mousse for dessert. The service was perfect we were welcomed at the entrance, our coats were taken to the back of the restaurant so no one could access them easily (you can keep them with yourself as well if you want) and the whole staff was trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible."

  • "My rating is based on fine dining expectation. I went there because I want to try French dining and their rating is good and I can't make reservations for the other French restaurant. I don't understand why there's so many customers. It is good for $18 class, I will consider it for $28. For $38, it wasted my time to try other good dining."

  • "Everything was good not wow! I don't think I want to come back again. In my idea the value of menu must be $28 not $38."

  • "Firstly in half empty restaurant attempted to seat us in worst area beside kitchen and inches from next table. Lamb very dry. Waiter replaced with another lamb dish which while better on first bite failed to remain that way and was dry by the time I finished. Escargot bland and boring. Desserts basic nothing special and prepared early in advance you could see signs of having sat all day. It was like airplane mode all the way."
