A word from Bistro Pastis
A convivial atmosphere, enhanced by the cozy fire place, invites diners to linger a while. Dinner tables are set with crisp linens, making you feel like a welcome guest at a friend’s home. If meeting a friend for a drink or appies, have a seat along the bar, where there’s great people-watching. Pastis is as close as you can get to Paris without a plane ticket. It has one of the city’s largest wine selections by the glass. Very romantic.

  • "We went there because of Travelzoo's 4-course meal deal. The appetizer, salad and dessert were excellent, and we really liked the escargots. The steak, however, reminded me of my college dorm days. The outside was overcooked to an extent that it tasted bitter. The accompanied fries were too salty. Service was excellent. The owner went to every table to talk to the customers."

  • " Pastis is a fabulous restaurant-The owner John Blakeley is easily the greatest restaurant host in Vancouver, moving beyond the standard bearer of this designation-John Bishop. He will bend over backwards to make your restaurant experience far and above anything you will get in the rarefied Parisian Bistro scene-his pomme frites and sweetbreads are in a class by themselves, easily surpassing any fare from L'ami Louis at about 1/5 the price. How do you spell great time and great bargain. No wonder the Burgundy and Bordeaux wine clubs are frequent travellers to Pastis, as indeed John just hosted 8 of us for one of the great dining experiences of the year. Kudos to John and his fantastic Pastis restaurant!!!"

  • "Bistro Pastis is a chic little neighbourhood restaurant featuring friendly servers with authentic french accents. The food is good but maybe could be great with a bit more attention - a little more subtle touch with the salad dressings - more generous helpings of veg in the salad nicoise, or more care in baking the pastry (my companion's quiche was burned at the edges). Service was excellent to start with but we had to flag down the waitress to order coffee and get a dessert menu - then find someone to actually take our order for desert. We would really like to recommend this place but will try dinner one time in future before doing so."

The combination of tastes was wonderful and the crispy tasty crust surrounding tender juicy meat was just amazing. Beautiful innovation. The Endive Salad as starter is a must. Definitely my best dinner so far since I moved from Montreal 7 years ago. Congratulation to the new Chef!"

  • "We had not been to Pastis for a few years and were delighted to see it had not changed. John continues to offer a wonderful dining experience with food that is fabulous. I loved the sweetbread starter and the ling cod could not have been better . Others in my group had the Osso Bucco and they enjoyed every bite. The strawberry tart was a disappointment . The meringue seemed to be old and too sweet. Service was adequate and although some may think it was slow I think that you can't expect that presentation and those flavors to be served in fast food time."

  • "I like this restaurant a lot, so was pleasantly surprised by the recent changes to both the appetizer and main course lists. The new chef has added some interesting items, including a delicious sturgeon dish, and some beautiful new presentations. A black-battered cauliflower, sliced open to show the white within, was an especially appealing addition to the plate. A recent melon gazpacho was perfectly seasoned to emphasize the tension between the cool melon and mild spice. The sole, a carryover from the previous menu, was even tastier than before. It's hard to believe that this restaurant can, after 15 years, still offer up a dynamic kitchen and evolving menu. Kudos to John and his staff!"

  • "It had been a while since we visited Pastis for dinner and we remembered the meal was one of the better ones we've had in Vancouver. It didn't disappoint. Our meal was excellent from le aperitif to le dessert. The special sea scallops with risotto was amazing and the duck was perfectly prepared. Our waiter's attention was pretty dispersed but he graciously gave us a port on the house with dessert. And even though the tables seem fairly close, we had plenty of room at out two top and wasn't disturbed at all by neighbouring diners. We would highly recommend Pastis for a romantic night out and un excellent reaps."

  • "It was a bad nite to dine here that day. Kitchen could not keep up with the service. We thought we would be smart to order before the big party at the other table ordered but we were wrong. We got out of the restaurant 3 1/2 hrs later. Most of the tables beside us got their food quite late including their appetizers. When the mains arrived, they arrived in parts--including the fish dishes. The elderly women beside us complained they were not hungry anymore when their mains arrived. The owner, nice guy he is, gave every table complimentary fries while they waited for their food. It was a disaster. It was suppose to be an early father's day dinner for my husband. Now, we have to take him out again to make up for it."

Meals are not cheap and sauces are very rich !! The menu needs to be tweeked to provide a refreshed choice of main courses!!   • "We have enjoyed Bistro Pastis as a wonderful restaurant to celebrate special occasions for many years. Last weekend marked another family event, and again, everything about the dinner, the presentation, the service, the wine, and the ambience was top notch. We had reserved early (5:30) as we were moving on to a concert later, and the tables filled while we were enjoying our dinner. It was therefore quiet on our arrival and even as it filled, the noise levels remained at acceptable levels. We particularly enjoy the dinner specials, and had difficulty choosing from amongst the three options that were offered on this evening. Delicious dinner, great wine, and a lovely evening."

  • "I ordered the duck with salad and was disappointed that the duck was so dry that I wanted water to help it go down. We were offered croissants in a roving basket by someone who I assumed was the owner, and although they were good, I would not have accepted them had I known that we would be charged for them, 6 for $21. If the server had asked me if I wanted any while ordering, I would have said no, but since bread is customarily served at the beginning of meals and is usually complimentary as a matter of course, I was surprised to be billed I felt conned. This is not a dim sum restaurant. I've had some really exceptional complimentary bread in Vancouver restaurants (C Restaurant comes to mind). I did not pay the bill so didn't complain then"

  • "Went for dinner on a Friday evening. Had asked for a quiet table when I made the reservation. It was busy and crowded, but we did get a quiet table. We both had the butter lettuce and the bouillabaisse. The fish of the day for the bouillabaisse was smoked albacore tuna. The meal was delightful. We had a side order of pomme frites. If I've had better, I don't remember. The dessert, a lemon trio, finished up the meal nicely. Our server was excellent: friendly, attentive, but not disruptive. Truly great food and a delightful restaurant overall. Highly recommended. "

  • "This visit was a birthday lunch treat. Pastis is usually a perfect choice for this, but, we've had much better food here before. Lunch for vegetarians was limited. Started with the endive salad, which was smaller and not as delicious as previous visits. Just two crumbs of blue cheese and two nuts on what was meant to be an endive, blue cheese and nut salad... Then, omelettes arrived but were different to what was advertised and ordered. They were meant to contain red peppers and swiss cheese, but contained barely any cheese and only some tomatoes, no peppers. Still an 'okay' lunch but not as good as anticipated. Left a little disappointed."

  • "The ONLY redeeming part of our evening was our waitress Cassandra - she was outstanding! After checking the website, we came in especially for the Boeuf Bourguignon but apparently their website hadn't been updated so instead we were sold on the whole presentation of the 'rib eye special', that the owner cuts it table-side, etc. but instead the 'hostess' cut it with the owner watching over. Neither one of them said a word to us, never even making eye contact with us. Our medium rare order came to us 'raw'. The owner saw it & commented but still served it, only to have us send it back moments later. Every cut was gristle; clearly cut wrong by the hostess. Très décevant."

The place was full and buzzing but being removed from the core of the room we were were able to visit comfortably. Attentive wait staff, very good food and an adequate wine list. We all had three courses and all were beautifully presented. We have been to this restaurant before and I would return again. "

  • "I actually love this Kits bistro. Mellow yellow walls make it feel sunny in the day and soothing at night. The food is wonderful. Had the special which was delicious, arctic char and scallops over a bed of risotto and asparagus> Not hurried service and just the right amount of bustle and enjoyment of diners all over the room. Wonderful fireplace going on chilly days and lots of special seats to choose from. Wait staff are attentive but not in your face. Always helpful in assisting a diner with any food sensitivities such as myself. A go-to restaurant for a ladies lunch or a bite before or after a show."
