Diner Reviews
  • "We had been held up in traffic and it had taken us an hour and twenty minutes to travel a normal 30 minute trip to downtown so we were 20 mintes late for our reservation but they had held the table for us, which was wonderful as we thought we might have to go on over to Jones Hall for the symphony hungry!"

  • "One would think that a restaurant inside a hotel would provide for ho-hum food. This is not the case here. While the menu is not the largest, they have a fine selection of seafood and land-lubber food to choose from. Our servers were very attentive. We were very early to see the Symphony (just a block away). Did I mention this is a great pre-symphony place to go? This gave us ample time to enjoy our food and not feel rushed for the symphony. We were there in plenty of time. We split the shrimp and cheese appetizer. Both were very tasty. We also had the Chilean Sea Bass and the Crab cakes. Both were wonderful with some wine. We'll be back."

  • "We have enjoyed Bistro Lancaster in the past. It has deteriorated to the extent that it is noisy with indifferent food and service and overpriced for the quality of the food."

  • "Just across the street from Jones Hall, and with $10 valet parking, this is the perfect way to start an evening of theater. Then keep it in mind for other dining because of the sophisticated ambiance, excellent food and service. A lovely experience except for the noise level when the place became full. I highly recommend this resturaunt. (It's a bit disconcerting to see old tshirts and baseball caps dining next to me in this upscale resturaunt. )"

  • "We went to the Bistro for a pre-opera dinner. It was a great, buzzy scene with most people dressed for a performance at the nearby performance complex. The menu was interesting, the food excellent and and service prompt and attentive.. It was the perfect choice for our occasion and I'd recommend it not only for pre-perfomance dining, but also for any time."

  • "Recent dining at The Lancaster Bistro was a pleasant surprise. We have dined there many times over the past 30 years. They total redecoration of the dining area and the overhaul of the menu are to be commended, so I am."

  • "The calimari had been pre-cooked and re-heated and was appallingly salty. The tables are crammed together and the noise level was over the top. The restaurant is very expensive for what you end up receiving. I shall not return."

  • "This was our 4th visit to the Lancaster. It seems that prices have risen significantly since our last visit, and the food quality was slightly diminished as well. Our experience was up and down: The soup appetizer was just so-so. My crab cakes were delicious, but overpriced. My husband's salad entrée was something I could have made at home. The deserts we ordered were unique and exceptional - the highlight of the meal. The ambiance was quaint and recently remodeled, but a little noisy for "fine dining" and such expensive prices. Our above meal for two, including 2 glasses of wine, was $160. I don't think we will be returning anytime soon, and would not recommend since the quality of the food and the experience do not match the prices."

  • "Was too loud and much too expensive for what we got. Pre theater crowd. $90 for two entrees, iced teas and one dessert. Will think carefully about going back . . . ."

  • "For us, it started as soon as we walked in the door. We were not greeted cordially, instead we were greeted with a "do you have a reservation". No hello. No welcome. Server was pleasant enough but not professional. The bread offered tasted like Jiffy box cornbread muffins. I ordered off the menu, as a vegetarian. Plate arrived with a grilled 1990 presentation. After questioning the lack of variety, the waiter brought a small plate of mashed potatoes, that were actually tasty. The grouper special really lacked creativity and flavor. I expected much more from this restaurant."

  • "Food was good. Service was excellent...waiter was very attentive and courteous. He did not hurry us and made sure we got to the concert in plenty of time. The valet service after the Symphony concluded was also excellent."

  • "Great spot for an early bite before heading to one of Houston's outstanding theatre venues."

  • "This place gets a lot of dinner business due to its proximity to the Theatre District. Food is good but unimaginative. Not that many menu choices. Service is very slow. Great location is about all it has going for it."

  • "Lancaster Bistro has always gotten rave reviews and I was excited to go there. Hostess tried to seat us at a table for 2 crammed between the bar and a table for 4 where we would have been crammed right up against other diners. We refused the table and said we would leave if we did not get better seating. We got a better seat; service was excellent and the filet mignon was outstanding. Cheese plate was wonderful enough to take home. Bread pudding with caramel sauce, figs and cherries was absolutely delicious. The food overall was delicious; major complaint is that white tablecloths have been removed, the restaurant is crammed full of tables, it was VERY noisy, and the ambience was more like a chain restaurant than fine dining."

  • "The Bistro is located within the Lancaster Hotel and just steps away from the Alley Theatre and Jones Hall. It’s a perfect place to dine before a show but you best make a reservation ahead of time if you plan to go before a play or concert."

  • "The food, service, and setting was wonderful. The noise level was high."

  • "Atmosphere was nice and location was convenient to the Alley Theatre. Unfortunately our food was average and the service was terrible. Waiter disappeared and never checked on us. Salads were bland. I had the Arugula and my mother had the Caesar. We shared the crab cakes, bread pudding and choc. molten, and they were good. The ambience is nice, although the tables are fairly crowded, and if you are attending a theatre performance, the location can't be beat, but the food was average and the service was terrible for the price and reputation. One more thing, there is valet parking which adds another $15+ to your expenses. I would only recommend this restaurant if someone was looking for something convenient to the Alley Theatre."

  • "We ate at the Lancaster Grill prior to the symphony and it was a perfect choice. We received excellent service. Our party was pleased with their choices of both food and wine. We walked across the street with time to spare before the symphony program began."

  • "Everything was good, but not great. Service was good, food was good. There were no wow moments or standout attributes to the restaurant. Not the best value in a restaurant experience for the price, but not bad either."

  • "I love this place for business breakfast and lunch meetings and it offers valet parking as the perfect place to dine before taking in a ballet or other show downtown. The recent refurbishment updated the color scheme and textiles while retaining the feel of an upper east-side New York bistro. And they upgraded the menu. Five of us took in a lunch meeting this week. The service was unobtrusive, professional and efficient as always. The main selections included i think five luncheon salads, all with fresh grilled fish if you like. My lunch favorite here is a piece of pan grilled fish atop a large pile of chopped kale with pine nuts, a little feta and a light, lemony dressing. Best call ahead for reservations, especially for weekend evenings."

  • "My friend and I went to Bistro Lancaster before an evening at the Wortham Center. My friend had eaten at Bistro Lancaster before, and recommended going there. I was not disappointed. It is a small restaurant, with a delightful interior. Our waiter Lesley was attentive, and excellent. We both had the Sea Bass- excellent. My friend had a "dirty martini" and I had the Lemon sorbet. Everything was perfect. The Bistro was popular that night, so the only drawback was the noise level."

  • "I had heard great things about this place. But it was "ok"....if your going to the theater, great location. But other then that, we wouldn't go back, Although, the waitstaff was fabulous, and drinks-great!"

  • "This is a great place for the ballet because it is only a block walk to the Wortham. Another plus is that you can valet your car and not have to fight the traffic to get out, but just walk on back and get your car. The service was not what I expected. It was not as good as before it became a Bistro, but everyone does have a bad night."

  • "We were staying in the hotel after seeing Ron White in concert. The food and service were excellent. I had the scallops and my wife had the filet. They were both cooked perfectly. Only issue we had was the size of the Bistro. They really did have too many tables in the restaurant. It made it much too crowded."

  • "Went to the Bistro beforeattending a show. The special was the ribeye and was really playedup by te waitstaff as to how good it was - the meat was very tough. The potatoes and asparagus was good. Our waiter was excellent."

  • "our server was the most kind, polite and respectful guy ever!! my filet mignon with the wine that he recommended to us, delicious!! I had one of the best meals of Birthday, and after that, the tremendous Opera! (Rigolleto) it was a great moment of my life. Thank God!!"

  • "I have not been to the Lancaster for several years. I chose it this time for its convenience to the theatre and my memories of an intimate restaurant that was quiet with great food. The food and service met my expectations, but the Lancaster has put the tables to close to each other. We might as well have shared our table with the couples on either side, since I felt part of their conversation."

  • "Wanting to spend a quiet evening with friends on new year's eve, we booked rooms at The Lancaster and had dinner reservations for 9pm. We wanted to check out the newly updated interior. They have done a wonderful job with the lobby as well as the rooms. The Bistro Lancaster interior is brighter with mid tone gray walls. Dinner was wonderful. I had the crab cakes and they were actually made with crab, not bread. Two ordered the lamb chops and one ordered the filet Mignon. All reported that their meals were excellent. Service was perfect, attentive but not intrusive. The breakfast buffet in the morning was nice, but since the Bistro area is small, the buffet got a bid crowded. But the food was good and the service excellent."

  • "Lancaster hotel is great. Bistro food is very good. Service more than acceptable. Crowded for breakfast, fine for lunch, but the atmosphere is not acceptable for dinner. The photos on Open Table and the Hotel website are misleading. They do not have table cloths and the bistro is small with a different paint scheme now. Dinner tables are cramped and the atmosphere is much too casual for any kind of special occasion dinner. Add some atmosphere and the Bistro would again be an intimate gem."

  • "overall pretty good but simple menu and wine list. very convenient for the theater district. vallet parking a bonus. a little pricey but good value given the overall quality,! !a:mbiance and location."

  • "Very friendly and accommodating, however menu is limited and pricey for what you get. For those prices, I expect better ambiance and better food. Crab cakes were not the best I have eaten but definitely the most expensive."

  • "We dine here fairly often and have always been very pleased until this time. The problem is the food. Shriimp cocktail was outstanding in the past., but the shrimp on this Saturday night was so overcooked and dry I could hardly cut it even with a sharp knife. Skimpy on the sauce, too. Not at all like the customary mouth-wateringly wonderful shrimp cocktail of the past. The Caesar salad has also undergone major change, and was so tiny it could hardly be called a salad. Entrees were all right, but nothing to brag about, except for the sea bass, but even it looked lonely on a plate bare of anything to accompany or accent. Something has definitely changed in the kitchen."

  • "On the evening we had dinner at Bistro Lancaster the food was excellent but service non existent. After seating us, with reservations, at the table closest to the door our order was taken and then nothing happened. We did not see the wine we ordered. We not see any bread at our table. At two other tables, people were seated after us got their bread and their wine or cocktails immediately, same server. We had to ask the lady who seated us for our wine and then for bread. We finally got our food. No one came by to see how we were doing or if the food was cooked to our liking. When I was taking my last bite of bread, my plate was jerked away with rudeness. We should not be ignored at any restaurant, we are paying for good service."
