A word from Bistro La Bonne
Bistro La Bonne’s main dishes are favorites that range from cassoulet Toulousain (cannelloni bean stew with duck confit, sausage, smoked bacon and lamb) and navarin d’agneau aux primeurs (braised leg of lamb with tomato, carrots, turnips & green beans), to grilled merguez sausage and blanquette de fruits de mer (mussels, shrimp, scallops and salmon in a champagne cream sauce).
If you seek authentic French cooking in the Washington area, take a spin up to U Street, where executive chef/owner Daniel Labonne tackles some of France’s more complex fare with a winning hand.

Our mission is to create a memorable dining experience for any special occasion, in addition to a simple dinner date with friends or a romantic evening with that special someone. So come and “Enjoy the Journey, at Bistro La Bonne”.

Diner Reviews
  • "One of the so-called signature dishes simply do not match up with our definition of what they should be and certainly not what other French restaurants do. Specifically, the cassoulet is virtually tasteless. The music was cranked up to that always annoying "can't hear the person across the table" level that essentially said there are better places than this in the DC area. "

  • "The mussels were absolutely delicious and the service was great. Restaurant staff was very friendly and attentive. Great location right at 14th and U. "

  • "The food was disgracefully bad. This place should be sued by the government of France."

  • "Very nice place for moules et frites. This is my favorite French place because you actually hear the staff speaking French. Good scene and not too loud. "

  • "With generous servings and affordable mimosas, this was an excellent choice for brunch. My friend enjoyed the seafood omelette and my ham and Swiss cheese one was good as well. The salmon tartare was delicious and very well proportioned. The mimosas may have been cheap, but were made with much better quality ingredients than others I've had. Add a cute table outdoors in beautiful weather and a charming Parisian host, and it was altogether a lovely dining experience. "

  • "Staff was very friendly and accommodating for our group of 6-8 (some coming and going). Everyone was very happy with their dinners. Fun place to hang out with friends."

  • "Good food, good service, and a reasonable tab at the end. Will definitely go back."

  • "This is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. The service is impeccable, the food consistently delicious and the ambiance is comfortable. Overall, a lovely experience."

  • "Bistro La Bonne is a quaint spot hidden in plain sight on U. St. The first greeter we met spoke with a thick French accent and we found most of the employees to be the same. It was delightful! The food was exquisitely prepared, with wonderful flavors and textures. The presentation was aesthetically pleasing and all features put together encouraged me to finish everything on my plate! I would recommend Bistro La Bonne to anyone looking for a small taste of France on an average night."

  • "Ok so I booked a rez here on Easter..last minute. I googled & it said kid- friendly. This place is NOT kid friendly. Don't get me wrong it was fun. Reggae & brunch, an endless flow of mimosas, a late 20's to early 30's crowd, we fit in besides the FOUR kids we had in toe. I would definitely go back without the kids! The food was decent. French bistro style. The service was great. Very attentive, and accommodating. "

  • "I absolutely love Bistro La Bonne! Great food, great prices and a super friendly staff. It's always easy to get a reservation!! I recently tried the shrimp and grits and fell in love. "

  • "Had been at the Bistro La Bonne twice before, but during the week. We had dinner reservation for 4 this past Saturday night, found the quality of the food and service was poor. The quality of the meat was fatty and stringy, the pepper corn sauce was watery, the fries were ok; the server clearly did not want to be working on that night. Therefore will not be eating at this establishment again. With all the new choices of restaurants in our neighborhood, why have a mediocre meal!"

  • "I dropped in after a Smithsonian lecture and liked what I found. The country pate and peppercorn steak were both tasty and service reasonably attentive. Tried and liked the daily special dessert -- a lemon tart. I'll keep Bistro La Bonne in mnd for dining after plays or lectures."

  • "If you are looking for good food and a reasonable price, then this is the place. The food is authentically French and delicious. I have been at least 3 times and have never been disappointed. Great ambience, also."

  • "Wonderful atmosphere and great food paired with great service at this little French bistro on U. Highly recommended!"

  • "We have been regulars for 5 years. This last visit we encountered a new menu: a lot more meat, no duck, and for fish and sea food only salmon and a few mussels options. Their delicious trout is gone. They have added rabbit and still have a lamb dish. Their previous menu was more varied and less loaded with red meat. For a French restaurant to not only have chicken as a poultry option is limiting. The staff are friendly and corteous. The desserts delicious. It is a not too noisy, reasonably priced restaurant, one not crawling with only hipsters and yuppies, but with a mix of all types of folks. A neighborhood treasure."

  • "Meal left much to be desired. Only plus was the unlimited mimosas. But, I don't drink. Food, ehhhh."

  • "A little weird sitting upstairs because the waiter had to go up and down constantly, and was not as attentive as I'd like. But the food was great. The steak tartare (spelling) was delicious."

  • "I've been to Bistro la Bonne four or five times now over the course of the last year and I've enjoyed it thoroughly every time. The food is always fantastic, it won't break the bank, and all of the pretension you'll find at other French inspired spots in DC is left way behind. Try the beef tartare- it's the best I've ever had. The mussels, which are somehow always plump despite the season, are also fantastic. The "Americaine" version includes HEAPS of seafood- big shrimp, crawfish tails, and scallops. It's incredible! The service is good, but sometimes a little rushed at the end- if it's busy, don't linger. They do a great job if you order your whole meal at once and tell them you want it paced- courses always come out perfectly timed!"

  • "The food, wine, waiters were all excellent. We sat at a table upstairs overlooking U St, which had a lot going on. All in all, we really enjoyed our experience and can't wait to go back!"

  • "Very cheap mimosas and belinis and decent brunch food, but the service was very poor. For example, they brought us the wrong dessert to share then told us it was what we'd ordered (last time I'd checked a sample platter was not one piece of chocolate cake). Not sure I'd go back."

  • "So this place has good brunch food. Not bad, not great, just good. But bottomless mimosas for ten bucks is great--at least to me. They are always watching to refill your drinks. Last weekend they replaced my champagne glass with a goblet :)"

  • "I brought my hard of hearing parent and her friend here for dinner. The food was tasty and authentically French, but the venue is LOUD. We sat upstairs on the mezzanine which has a much more intimate feeling and less noise."

  • "The food was ok, nothing super amazing, not bad either. The service was not good at all though. Our server was very nice when at our table but that didnt happen much. Our group had several of bottomless brunch drinks. The small glasses got refilled maybe 3 times during over 2 hours we were there. Just a very slow service over all and not very attentive to the patrons. We had to walk with our payment to the cash register because nobody came over to get the payment from the table. We do brunches all the time and even though the food was not bad, the service was poor and we will not be coming back."

  • "Being old folks, we were put off by the blaring music, which typically leads to room full of shouting patrons struggling to converse. So we initially didn't even want a table. Rather than dismissing us with a Gallic shrug, the waiter immediately turned the music to a non-ear-ringing level and found us a table in the back. He soon seated next to us another similarly aged trio. They were delightful; we could hear each other talk; and we all a fine evening with good food and friendly service."

  • "Needed to make a last minute reservation for a large group for Sunday brunch. Was surprised to find that bistro la Bonne was available. I live close by but never realized there was so much space. The food was delicious and my friends and I had a great time. Excited there is such a solid brunch place in the neighborhood!"

  • "My fiancee and I had been there before and had a nice experience, so we decided to try it again. Service was some of the worst we've had in DC. Took almost an hour to get our first glass of wine (even then I had to ask for it), and overall dinner was two hours. The waiter never asked how our meal was (my steak was well done when I asked for medium rare), and tended to two other tables who were seated after us. Not a good experience."

  • "this place is enjoyable depending on where you are seated. one couple was right in the middle of all the traffic. they did not enjoy their evening."

  • "I like most everything on the menu but the variety of mussels they have and the flavors can't be beat. Happy hour gives you a huge bowl of them, a glass of wine and steak frites for only $15. Great deal."

  • "Arrived 5 min early for our reservation. Stood by open table kiosk for 15 min after our reservation time without being greeted staring at the screen that showed the restaurant half full. Decided to sit at bar. We enjoyed our food and the bartender was friendly. We watched multiple people walk in to the same problem. The only reason we got credit for our OT reservation was because we are familiar with the software and sat ourselves on the abandoned kiosk. This place is busy enough to afford a hostess. They should get one."

  • "Awesome French food. Lots of options from the mussel bar in addition to several types of entrees. So delicious."

  • "The food is great and the service is friendly and helpful. The price is right for the excellent quality and choices. The only suggestion to the owner would be to make an effort to maintain the decor a bit. The restaurant's age is showing and might be keeping it from greatness!"

  • "Food is fine if you like standard bistro French, but the noise is deafening, tables too close together and service well-meaning but harried."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "We waited at the door for ten minutes before we were greeted. We were then sat at a tiny two top between large parties, where we waited for 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us at all. We ended up leaving because no one came by. We told the manager on the way out, but he only smiled and shrugged his shoulders. Disappointing."

  • "This was a great place for me to try French cuisine for the first time. The ambiance was pretty nice. The wine bottles in the brick wall are a pretty nice touch. The service started off a little bad and we initially chopped it up to the French style of eating. When it came down to it I think they just forgot about us for a quick second, lol. Other than that the waiters were very attentive. Wine glasses stayed filled and the food was excellent. I chose the beef medallions and they were cooked to my preference. Very flavorful. When I have friends in town I will show off and take them to this place as if I know something about French cuisine. :-)"

  • "The valentines day menu was very restrictive, a french restaurant didnt even have a cheese plate. It was suprising and disapointing"

  • "The food was ok, but they had only one waitress for around 20 tables during busy Valentine's Day and the service was some of the slowest I've ever experienced. Will not be back again."
