We always arrange to have a meal at Bistro Jeanty whenever we visit the Napa Valley. We started with the Pate' de Campagne (country style pate') with cornichons. Excellent without the sometimes pasty texture that more processed pate' can have. My wife had the quiche while I had my favorite - Cassoulet. We could not have asked for a better meal. Service was perfectly attentive - there when you needed them but not intrusive. We sat on the Patio on a perfect Napa Valley morning. The special was Spring rack of lamb -amazing! We enjoyed a range of cocktails, from dry martinnis to Tom Collins, so the bar is well stocked and staffed by knowledgable tenders. For dessert we shared a super fun "chocolate bag" filled with a fresh berry smoothie-a great hit and the 9-yr old loved eating the bag. We were treated excellently, with discreet staff that removed plates when appropriate and brought new items and accountrements without being asked. The only problem was this: I had called ahead and requested that their bill for the evening be put on my credit card. I gave the gentleman at the restaurant all my credit card information, what percentage I wanted to leave for a tip, etc., etc. This dinner was to be my treat.
When I saw my friends the next day, I discovered that this news was never related to them! They ended up paying for the dinner and tip themselves! We had escargot and the fried smelt with aoili for appetizers, short ribs and rib eye for mains and the bread pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious! The escargot was very buttery, the smelt was so unique and the braised rib was so elegantly presented and outright fantastic! The rib-eye was ok - its not your five-star steak restaurant rib-eye that am used to in Houston; but the fries that came with it was simply oustanding. Bread pudding for dessert just rounded this perfect meal. We also brought our own wine - $20 corkage. We ate on the patio. Be careful you don't get sunburned. Even though the patio is covered, the sun poked its way through the slats and was still quite bright and warm. Their food is straight forward, fresh and delicious, but with elevated flavors and controlled sophistication and complexity.
