We had a great evening; we were seated at a window table. We had onion soup, which was to die for. We also had the escargots that were so yummy. The French Fries are crazy wonderful; their baguette is truly delicious. We also had their Banana Royale; just a wonderful ending. Our waitress was perfect. Everything about that evening was wonderful. The place is pricey, but well worth it!! Thank you!!

We invited new friends to dine at a French restaurant in Georgetown. It was very French and the food was very good. The escargot were served in a traditional manner and delicious. The French onion soup was the highlight. The minute steak with butter was also cooked to perfection and delicious with the pomme frites. No "wow" factor here but ok service and good food. Would return and maybe sit in the bar area next ime.

A consistent Georgetown favorite for many years, this place has its old bistro standbys -- best roast chicken in town --with new additions so that you always have new choices. Sunday night's rayfish for one, and a really good onion tart for the starter. Surely this is the best restaurant in town late at night. Good wine list, not overpriced, waiters who don't push, charming atmosphere with 100-year old posters, just the right level of light, what's not to like?

Just what we wanted, a leisurely quite conversation for five with food and drink. This place would not have worked for us if we were in a hurry or if we were looking for the most adventurous food in the neighborhood. We spent a few coins on wine so the bill was as large as the love around the table. So well worth it.

First time visit after many years walking by... FOOD: a 2-course fixed price menu for $24 is a bargain in a place that offers such lucious, complex dishes... The staple French onion tart was the best I've had and made me sad to finish it! Beef was perfectly cooked and meltingly tender. ATMOSPHERE: old-world wood panelling and low light combined with a space divided into nooks and alcoves gives a clubby feel, in the best sense of the word. SERVICE: Team service works well here. Servers at old-school places like this I find are far less chatty than at 'modern' restaurants, and more reserved and this was no exception... if you are on a date, or a business lunch or dinner, you won't be disturbed by the discrete service.

My girlfriend started with nine clams, which were very tasty, and got the steak Caesar salad. I chose from the Two-Course menu: country pate and beef brochettes. Both were very good. The only disappointment was that they were out of mango sorbet. We will certainly return after future shows at the Kennedy Center.

  • A morsel of France in Georgetown

Six of us dined at Bistro Francais on Saturday night. We have walked by this restaurant many times and finally decided to give it a try. So glad we did! The inside is so typical of what one would find in any bistro in France - the darker wood, the big posters, table areas separated by leaded glass (we had such fun with the poor people sitting on the other side of the glass as we kept thinking it was a mirror). Prices were quite reasonable for such authentic flavors. The wine list, while not long, did have good selection across many of the wine regions. Go and enjoy yourselves!

  • Why so much SALT?
    Nancster
    Dined on 9/7/2014
This restaurant had been recommended by foodies we respect as a good Sunday brunch option while having a little troll around Georgetown. On offer, in the two course special was watercress soup which, had the salt content rendered it almost inedible, would have had some promise. My beef brochette was tough and the gravy had to be pushed aside because, again, it was just too salty. My companion also remarked about the saltiness of the soup but pronounced her trout main as very good. The wait staff was attentive and unobtrusive and the venue, charming.

Two of us had the 3 course early bird and one had the two course early bird. the pate for a first course was okay; not impressed with veal kidneys for an entree. This was his first time having kidneys; won't order them again. Gazpacho was a bit bland. The mussels are always very good at Bistro Francais. The sour dough bread is also excellent. Another companion had a variation on paella and said it was very good. I had salmon Florentine which was delicious. The sauce could have been a little more flavorful but I ate every bite. The crème brulee which was extra was the best dessert. The tarts were very good. Our server was efficient but certainly not friendly.

I walk through Georgetown often and always pass this restaurant, wondering how good it actually is. Well - what better time to try it than during restaurant week? I got my answer. My meal was decent but nothing to brag about. I do not think I would ever bring friends or family there, or pay full price for a meal. The only thing I can describe Bistro Francais as is "plain Jane". It was quiet but the inside looked old and furniture was a bit worn down. Needs a bit of an up-lift to bring it back to life.

The only good thing we had of all The 7 dishes we ordered was The Steak tartar - which was amazing and worths the visit, one of the best I've tried in France! The rest of the menu of our dinner was pretty bad and very slow. If you go ask for the table close to the window.

Wasn't horrible, but wasn't very memorable either. The interior was clean, the service was acceptable, though there weren't many people in there, so it's not like we were making it complicated. The food while good, I feel was overpriced and nothing really "special." It was standard American flare with french menu names. Nothing I would bill as "authentic french". The wine list, while comprehensive wasn't very friendly since you had to pay by the bottle. They did have a limited selection of by the glass selections; but nothing to really speak of. The only oddity, was the rap music that was being played over the speakers. Can I really complain that I had a bad experience, no. Am I going to return if I'm in the neighborhood, probably not.

We chose Bistro Francais to celebrate my wife's birthday and we are very happy that we did. My wife loves Coq au Vin and it isn't always easy to find so we were excited to give it a try and she was not disappointed. I had the duck and it was good but I will be giving some other items a try next time. I can't say enough about the service we received, it really made the evening special. I mentioned that it was my wife's birthday when I made the reservations and they presented her with a lovely piece of cake and glass of champagne which was a wonderful surprise. Our server was incredible, very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. We will be requesting her table on our next visit.

Internet presentation is not in accordance with the real experience. Service is friendly but detached. The whole place seems to suffer from tourist groups who want to share meals. This is explicitly mentioned on the menu (no sharing). Wines (not special) per glass are to expensive. Not a sufficient price-quality ratio. Not recomandable to friends, unless you wan't to loose them.

Cuisine was well prepared. Service was attentive, but not looming. I did like the fact that the waitstaff - while disappointed - were still very attentive given that we did not order any alcoholic beverages. The only issue I had is that the portions (appetizers & entrees) were too large - for me. I would have liked to enjoy 5-6 courses, but could barely manage 1.5. None the less - very nice. Cheers.
