Diner Reviews
  • "I lived 8 year in France. This restaurant isn't french. Very lower level"

  • "Nice place, pleasant service, good food, a bit pricey, but what isn't, nice selection of wines."

  • "We chose Bistro Francais to celebrate my wife's birthday and we are very happy that we did. My wife loves Coq au Vin and it isn't always easy to find so we were excited to give it a try and she was not disappointed. I had the duck and it was good but I will be giving some other items a try next time. I can't say enough about the service we received, it really made the evening special. I mentioned that it was my wife's birthday when I made the reservations and they presented her with a lovely piece of cake and glass of champagne which was a wonderful surprise. Our server was incredible, very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. We will be requesting her table on our next visit."

  • "Internet presentation is not in accordance with the real experience. Service is friendly but detached. The whole place seems to suffer from tourist groups who want to share meals. This is explicitly mentioned on the menu (no sharing). Wines (not special) per glass are to expensive. Not a sufficient price-quality ratio. Not recomandable to friends, unless you wan't to loose them."

  • "When my girl friends and I occasionally meet up, we always do at Bistro Francais. The early bird specials (5 - 7 pm) are great values. The food is good; the red wines are always served at perfect temperature; and the maitre'd and wait staff are very nice and welcoming."

  • "I've lived and in D.C. for our 20 years and had never been to this restaurant. I enjoyed everything about it. My friend had the duck and I had a cesear salad with chicken. Both dishes were excellent and the service was great."

  • "We've enjoy Bistro Francais many times and are never disappointed. A rare quiet venue for a nice evening of talking and enjoying friends. The food was wonderful as always. Artichoke salad - spectacular. Tried the ray fish for the first time. It was strange looking at first, but the flavor and texture were wonderful. Maybe only the French can pull this off."

  • "Pretty un impressive though had looked forward to it Special soft shell crab appetizer arrived Luke warm Dinner partner ordered artichoke special( had to be sent back to warm up) and sirloin steak medium which arrived as thin piece of meat nearly well done. And we were there early so not crowded at all The people, however, were polite , accommodating, and nice"

  • "We had a very nice lunch. Service was very friendly and good and the food very good and very close to a Parisian bistro. "

  • "Cuisine was well prepared. Service was attentive, but not looming. I did like the fact that the waitstaff - while disappointed - were still very attentive given that we did not order any alcoholic beverages. The only issue I had is that the portions (appetizers & entrees) were too large - for me. I would have liked to enjoy 5-6 courses, but could barely manage 1.5. None the less - very nice. Cheers."

  • "We had another fantastic dinner sitting in the window Friday night in lively Georgetown. We always have great wine, great food, and great services....and why we are repeat customers."

  • "I took several of my staff for a nice dinner during a conference. It was a great experience for all. Traditional bistro menu, very good service, a nice wine special, comfortable, cozy table and all at a reasonable price."

  • "Amid all of the mediocre restaurants that serve the tourists in Georgetown, we who live here return again and again to the exception, Bistro Francaise. Reliable, expert cooking, always pleasant service, best place in town late at night. We love it."

  • "I love this place. I have been here several times and always seem to get the same waitress who is a gem. The management creates a great dining experience. "

  • "The service was attentive but our food wasn't good. My husband had steak frites that he later said was almost tasteless. My seared tuna was thin, light gray in color, mushy and with little flavor. It was accompanied by an overcooked tomato/baby artichoke concoction that wasn't good. Our dining companion said that he enjoyed his trout. The back of the seat in our booth squeaked very loudly when I leaned back (on my side) so I had to lean forward during the entire meal. My companions had already settled in by the time I arrived or I would have asked to be moved. Couldn't the restaurant repair that? We won't be back, unfortunately. "

  • "My son and I went there for brunch. He loved his breakfast! I was so excited to get trout with spinach mousse, but for some reason was not significantly impressed. Perhaps it was the fact the trout was not pan sautéed or crisp, which is something I love. Or perhaps it was that it was a bit on the greasy side.... Of positive note, the room is rather cute and we received fine warm French bread as we waited for our entrees. But I was also caught off guard when they made people wait to be seated, even though there were plenty of empty seats! "

  • "Waitress was pleasant, atmosphere was relaxed and food was excellent. "

  • "My duck was chewy and bland, and my wife, who likes all sorts of fish, didn't like her fish dish (some sort of ray, I think) at all. We liked the appetizers, and the bread is great, but the poor quality of the entrees ruined the meal. There is no way that we will go to this restaurant again."

  • "The ambience and food are pretty good. The service was a little slow though. Our table got neglected for a large party and then for some reason they took our light when it was close to closing bit didn't seem to bother anyone else"

  • "I was skeptical that Bistro Francais would live up to our expectations from 25+ years ago, but we were all very pleased with our evening spent there last Saturday. The service was attentive, professional, and we never felt rushed through our evening. The ambiance was beautiful with touches of gold gilding and soft lighting, very cozy and conducive to long conversations. We requested a quiet booth/table and the staff was accommodating. The wines were affordable and the food was excellent. Notable was the French onion soup (authentic),the squab special, the salmon on spinach mousse, and the Coq au Vin, all satisfying and expertly prepared. I recommend this quiet gem in the heart of Georgetown. Bon Appetit ~"

  • "We have eaten at Bistro Francais several times and always enjoy the food and the ambiance. This visit the service was a little less satisfactory. We felt hurried and the waitress was not as attentive - especially regarding timing. We like the fact that this restaurant continues to serve traditional French food."

  • "Bistro Francais is always a reliable choice. Their Early Bird special is a wonderful treat. I miss the free wine, but it is still a good value. Service is always exceptional at this restaurant."

  • "In DC for a business meeting. This was my second time at this restaurant. Made reservations on Open Table. Luckily we arrived 10 minutes before the specials ended. Not sure that was on the website. Meal and host was great. Good wine. The only thing was that we did not receive a refill on bread as we requested. But truthfully we were so satisfied, it did not make a difference. Hope to go back."

  • "A wonderful, neighborhood-type bistro in the middle of DC (Georgetown). We couldn't be luckier. We stop here each time we are in DC for the Kennedy Center performances. Late night dinner is perfect as Bistro Francais is open to the wee hours. Great wine list. Very helpful waiters. Wonderful menu. What else is there to say?"

  • "We went to Bistro Francais, as we often do, after attending the theater. This time, the Aussie play "Rupert" at the Kennedy Center. As always, we were treated well. My girlfriend got the Lamb Couscous, one of her several favorites. I wasn't hungry, so got an omelet. I was goind to start with a bowl of that day's soup, but the waitress discovered it was sold out so I had the dependable Lentils with Merenguez Sausage. Everything was very tasty. We will return."

  • "I've been to Bistro Francais many times and it never fails. it's such a lovely, cozy, relaxing atmosphere with a menu of comfort foods but cooked in a way fit for a king. Every dish I've tasted at the bistro whether it's eggs benedict, beef, chicken corden bleu, a sandwich dish or dessert, is so well done with such attention to detail to the ingredients that every dining experience whether with family and friends or business luncheons is just a gastronomic delight. Truly a gem in Georgetown and I highly recommend it for any occasion--whether for family dining or romantic dinners. It's just such good food and cozy, intimate atmosphere that every dining experience there becomes a special occasion!"

  • "You can get a better chicken Caesar salad from just about ant take-out joint around town. And without having to wait forever to pay your bill."

  • "Bistro Francais is consistently good for classic French fare at reasonable prices. When I'm in the mood for escargots and rognons, I head for Bistro Francais. This is Georgetown at its homey best."

  • "One can always rely on real French bistro dishes, well-prepared, pleasantly served, at a reasonable price, in a warm romantic surrounding. But last night more than usual it was difficult to make up our minds between the various offers. We all had high praise for our delicious food."

  • "Alright, it's true: Georgetown's restaurants aren't the best in the city, by and large. But for a real bistro, good, steady, tasty French cooking this promises and delivers in a lovely space. Pleasant waiters, good wine list, decent prices, and late, late night service when you need it, we go here often."

  • "Perfectly prepared food. I recommend the trout in beurre blanc. FABULOUS!"

  • "The price of the food is not worth the quantity you receive. The service was horrible, my finished plate sat on my table for the reminder of my evening until I was ready to pay the bill."

  • "This is a great bistro type restaurant, in an excellent location. The food is simple French style, but always good and fresh. We have been going there for years, and are amazed that the food is as the menu describes it. There is no surprise: it is very good."

  • "Overall a nice place and the food and service are very good. When making the reservation I did ask for a quiet table but when we first arrived we were put at a table that was jammed in up front (the space should have been left open given the close proximity to other tables). I did politely request to be reseated and this request was granted without any of the typical DC restaurant attitude; which was nice to see. We ended up in the rear of the restaurant and it was quiet despite it being Valentines Day. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable. The food was perfectly (and quickly) prepared and the wine list is solid. Just be careful where you sit and perhaps we will go back on a slower night and get one of the nice booths."

  • "My girlfriend and I went to Bistro Francais after a show at the Kennedy Center, which we do about once a month. We were given our usual table overlooking the M Street sidewalk. A kabab-like entree on the special $25 two-course menu appealed to me, so I got that and a bowl of mussel soup. She wanted Black Bean soup, but the restaurant had run out. One of the problems with eating late. She finally settled for the Merenguez sausage with Lentils, a small caesar salad with blue cheese dressing, and the Ten Clams appetizer. We ended with a blueberry (me) and pear (her) tarts and glasses of Eau de Vie (her) and Armagnac (me). Everything was delicious. We look forward to returning after our next visit to the Kennedy Center."

  • "We hosted a European friend at this restaurant...a place we have enjoyed for more than 30 years. It did not disappoint. Food was delicious and not too much of it. The good wines on the list are a bit pricey but those prices are balanced by the reasonable cost of the dinner specials. We three agreed that the evening was delightful."
