Diner Reviews
  • "Cute little find in the neighborhood. Parking is valet only. Food was a bit heavy handed on the salt the night we went."

  • "The staff of Bistro Des Amis made our evening special from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The food, the wine and the atmosphere was perfect. The chocolate bread pudding was the perfect end of a perfect dinner. We look forward to many more visits to this little piece of Paris in the village."

  • "From the moment we walked in we were treated with diligent care. The food and service was tremendous throughout, the waitstaff and management worked great together. The ambiance was very romantic, with fires burning and dim lighting matching the French musicians playing acoustic music. A great experience all around, I recommend it highly for any romantic or celebratory occasion."

  • "Authentic French Bistro cuisine. You can taste the love in every bite!"

  • "We have dined at Bistro des Amis twice in the last month. The first time we were a party of 8 and the second time a part of 6. As a result we have tried almost every item on the menu. Without exception they have all been superb. We plan to return often."

  • "Group of us went for lunch and had a great time with good food and ambiance. Could have been at a sidewalk cafe in France."

  • "It had been a while since our last visit to Bistro des Amis. I think it may be under new ownership so it was good to see they are still BYOB and the food is still very tasty. My only recommendation would be to spruce the place up a bit. It is very authentic to what you would find as a neighborhood spot in France but it could use a little charm. We'll be back for the tasty and well priced food. BYOB is a huge draw. Merci beaucoup!"

  • "Just average food. very good menu but food did not live up to description."

  • "Great food & service. Very consistent. $10 cork fee which is very fair. We really like this place!"

  • "We ordered the croque monsieur, but was served the croque madam. One slice of ham straight from the meat counter of their favorite grocery, I should think. One slice of cheese. Nothing homemade about it. Nothing special about it. We ordered the Angus hamburger; it was actually pretty good. Both sandwiches were server with frozen French Fries; not homemade. Unimpressed!!! Other issues as well. After the meal, we discovered the ladies room had no toilet paper. We told the manager that our experience was pretty unsatisfactory; he indicated he had been on the job just two weeks as understood things were a bit rough. So the great reviews I read on OpenTable don't apply so much now. He said come back in a year and everything would be better."

  • "We recommend the foie gras, lamb osso buco, and the scallops. Those dishes are petty outstanding. we also tried their meats the previous time we visited- also very good! Solid - tasty and well preparer. Really delicious.. But, we don't recommend the escargots. We tried them twice; the first time a few months ago, it was great... Second time a couple of days ago, it tasted strange, like from a can- and with the wrong sauce.. We wish they cooked their escargots simpler, with just a bit of butter, salt and herbs... Last visit, they served us good fresh bread- couldn't stop eating it. But a couple of days ago, their bread was harder than the sole of my shoes.. I almost broke a tooth :-) Randall's supermarket has better baguettes"

  • "Too loud to talk. Too bright to be romantic. Service ok. Food good but timing was off. Appetizer same time as salad, entree too long to wait."

  • "I went to Bistro Mes Amis one evening with a colleague from India who is a vegitarian. We both found food we enjoyed but sensed a half beat off on the service. Very sinilar to Paris bistros I have visited. Parking is hard on University Ave. I would go back again, but not for a business lunch or dinner"

  • "The outside dining on a nice moderate weather night was delightful. Overall the food was good and the scallops very good. I would have preferred a bit less salt but can't tell if they just used the standard amount while I have gotten used to less salt for health reasons. When my husband requested something changed in his order the staff was gracious about it. My son who is the only family member to eat meat was delighted with his large portion of lamb."

  • "actually the selection is excellent, however on a Saturday night at 7 PM they were out of 4 items from the prix fixe-it was just after Valentines day however-they might go to a black board instead of a printed menu with so many out of's. I see wonderful reviews however of our party of 8 one was delighted and the rest felt so-so-the vegetables in both the bourginon and as a side were practically raw-beyond al dente- my puff appetizer was anything but puffy. So if you try it and we do love the casual feel -go very early before they sell out--others rave so maybe it was an off night, however I asked for more Bearnaise sauce and it came out both lumpy and cooler than room temperature-service was nice"

  • "Me and my wife went for our 4 year anniversary. Having gotten engaged in Paris, this brought back the feel we have so longed for that was in Paris. It was small, peaceful, well lit, and everything that we would have seen from a café in France. I would recommend this place, I would urge it as a must go! If you don't have the budget to go abroad, the is the closest I have been."

  • "Valentines day was my first time to dine in this restaurant. For this occasion it is a perfect spot. It was special menu for the occasion. So i cannot comment on regular menu. Patio is great for the evenings. Valet was $4. Service was good. Manager and owner seemed very pleasant and welcoming. Food was good. I had filet mignon. It was good but not great. Desert, wine and salad were terrific."

  • "This romantic cozy restaurant was perfect for a quiet Valentine's Day dinner. The lobster bisque and beef bourgignon were delicious and the waiters attentive. I highly recommend it for a little taste of France in the middle of Houston. It was a little pricey for Valentines but not bad and would be more reasonable on an average day."

  • "Went for business lunch on a Friday, food was very good, and it was not busy at all (very surprising to me because it was really good). Good quiet atmosphere for a business lunch. Also, the restaurant allows BYOB, so good place for wine geeks to bring out a bottle of their own."

  • "As always, our appetizers and main courses were well-prepared and presented. The Mushroom Ragout on puff pastry is especially attractive. The Filet Mignonette with peppercorn sauce was delicious--just spicy enough--and the potato puree was an ideal accompaniment. Eric was our server, but others who have served us on previous visits stopped by to say hello, confirming our sense that the regular clientele is recognized and valued."

  • "On Wednesday 1/8/2014 I came to Bistro des Amis with 4 people. We chose different dishes and they were all delicious. My friends used to be restaurant owners in Paris, they highly appreciated your French menu and told me that Bistro des Amis is one of their favorite places, especially for lunch. I have only come here for dinner but one day I will come back for lunch with my family."

  • "When you walk in, you feel like you are walking into a quaint local bistro in Paris. The menu and wine list are much like one would find in the Paris bistro. The sandwiches for lunch are excellent and the rabbit, scallops, and osso bucco are great choices for dinner. I make sure I schedule my trips to Houston to allow a visit as often as possible."

  • "We enjoyed dining here. The food was excellent. We went on a day too cold to eat outside, which left us at a very cramped table next to two large parties. It was strange that the owner decided to put us there when there was a wide open table for two in front of the live music (single man on a guitar). Otherwise, it was quite nice. The pre fixe menu was great, and many choices for wine. They also give you the option to bring your own wine for a small corkage fee or take your wine home if you cant finish the one you buy."

  • "I have been to Bistro des Amis twice. I enjoyed my first visit more than my second visit, primarily due to better service and availability of menu items and wine my first visit. On my most recent visit, my first several choices of wine were not available and I finally had to ask what was available. To conclude the evening, I also wanted profiteroles for dessert, but was informed that they were also not available. The food was quite good on both of my visits. I enjoyed escargot as an appetizer. The first time I visited, I had one of the restaurant's signature dishes, beef bourguignon, while on the most recent, I had the tuna special. Although I enjoyed the tuna, I think the beef bourguignon I had my first visit was better."

  • "This is an excellent french bistro (not to be confused with a high end french restaurant). Food and service were both excellent. The red snapper was perfectly cooked with a savory sauce. Atmosphere was great - cultured and friendly. Next visit to NYC will definitely come again. We were staying at a hotel in Midtown and found this restaurant easy to get to via subway, with a station a short block away. Quicker than a taxi which has to negotiate surface traffic."

  • "Bistro des Amis is a convenient thanksgiving locale where making reservations and reviewing on line menu is very easy. The décor is simple and has the flavor of an intimate but not overwhelming or crowded dining space. They have streamlined operations apparently with less of the hectic and more crowded nature of the space. The improvement is in the taste of the food and proportions served while the downside is the service with not quite enough attention to filling your glass and making you feel you can get what is needed in timely fashion with that little needed contact. Overall for a very American tradition done well for out of towner's knowing they have to spend a little more for that day it is a good place to go and it is recommended."

  • "We took the prix fixe dinner, which is available every night. We had apps, added 2$ for the salmon entree and 4$ for the beef bourguignon entree. The entrees were good, albeit buttery and salty, a la francaise. Wine by the glass was 7-9$. The chocolate mousse dessert was a big portion size, but rather heavy. Our waiter, a Parisian ex-pat, was very courteous and came to check on us numerous times. All in all, for the price, we very much enjoyed the quaint cozy ambiance, good service, and satisfactory food."

  • "We didn't have family in town for Thanksgiving this year so we decided to go out. When we learned Bistro des Amis was doing an American Thanksgiving we jumped at the chance. The Turkey was mouth-watering and came with all of the fixins. The pumpkin and pecan pies were out of this world!"

  • "For French cuisine and a great overall dining experience our first choice in Houston is Bistro des Amis. From Matt the owner to the wonderful and excellent wait staff. The Bistro is a West U gem that we love every visit."

  • "the bistro has the look and feel of being in France! We enjoyed the dishes, picked to go with wines from Bordeaux (this was a wine dinner). Excellent choices and pairings! This isn't a noisy restaurant - we could hear each other speaking in low tones - and that is such a plus! It would make a good "date night"!"

  • "French Bistros do not serve stale bread, stale crepes and stale profiteroles. The wine was very disappointing, where it had to be sent back (hopefully down the drain). The waitress tried hard to smooth the rough edges but did not have the skills to make a customer who is looking for an out of Texas experience still feel the French ambiance. If the Chef is French, then he needs to get out of the kitchen and check on his customer. I should have known. The place was not packed on a Saturday night. Sorry . Needs lots of work. for such a great location."

  • "There aren't many French-leaning restaurants in Houston, which makes this one a nice change. Any criticism I have is the lack of change in their menu over the last year or so. The food is very good but it's still the same offerings they've had since I started going there. The deck is heated on cold nights, which is nice to enjoy the food outside. The wine offering is okay - offering a 1/2 carafe is nice for two to share."
