Diner Reviews
  • "Used to have dinner frequenltly at Bistro Cassis when they were on 14th Street; had nothing negative to say when they were at that location. Have been wanting to come here for years but didn't until I heard they were finally accepting reservations. The food was good, nothing to make you blurt out "Mon Dieu!" Also, the scallops Lardon portion was skimpy. Further, they cramped three parties of 3 - 4 people into one corner area when there was room to spread out a bit. Understand this was for the waiter's convenience but given the loudness of the other tables and that they had to squeeze in between to serve, you'd think they would be more conscientious of the diner's experience. I will, perhaps, give in another try. I really want to love it!"

  • "I love going to Cassis because you will always have great food and great service. The place is frequently busy, so it's best to make a reservation. I look forward to my next visit!"

  • "Keeps asking if you want to drink over and over totally no polish"

  • "We've been to Cassis on Long Island & enjoyed it, so when we were looking something within close walking distance to Lincoln Center after our La Boheme matinee, this seemed like a smart choice. The food is decent, the prices reasonable, the service was wonderful and being that we had all dined on French food here in the states as well as in France, we found the experience quite authentic and we were impressed with our server, straight from Nice! I would recommend this place as I myself would return in a heartbeat...."

  • "A very nice bistro with good food at lower end UWS prices. We love the steamed mussels and asked to be seated at a table that could accommodate the mussels, the waste bowl, the fries, the salad and the wine. A table for two is way too small. Our waiter was not happy with the two of us taking up a table for four. In addition, the woman sitting at a table behind us was waiting for a friend and didn't want to order until he arrived. The waiter made pointed comments all through our meal, such as "enjoy your big table," and "the kitchen is about to close". (Really? At 9pm in Manhattan?) And then he left. We noticed that the service stopped and saw him with his coat heading out the door. Odd behavior during and otherwise pleasant meal."

  • "Were able to make a reservation easily for Saturday night at 8:15. Place became very busy around 9:00. Waiter was attentive, but a bit aloof. French onion soup had nice depth of flavor. My partner said his Spanish style mussels were excellent (large half portion). Entrée portions (lamb shank and short rib) were substantial and delicious. No room left for dessert. Would return."

  • "Except for a rather unfriendly and abrupt waiter and a very long time to wait for dessert, this was an excellent dinner experience."

  • "Great little French bistro, the food is always good and the service fine."

  • "I've been to Cassis a few times - twice in the city (the UWS location) and once in Huntington, Long Island. The food has been pretty consistent overall. They have one of the best French onion soups I've had, and their Cassis Calamari (when they have it) is quite tasty. However, the service can leave much to be desired. This most recent visit, the server kept urging us to order more food (e.g., "Don't you want an appetizer? No dessert? Don't you at least want coffee, etc.? You know that the moules special is only the half portion. Don't you want something else to go with it? Are you sure you don't want a salad or entree?"). This crossed the line from polite inquiry to pushiness and made our table of 4 so uncomfortable that we left quickly."

  • "Good French bistro food, lovely service, surprisingly good wines by the glass, right in the middle of the busy movie-theater-cafe neighborhood just north of Lincoln Center."

  • "Welcomed at once upon entering. While waiting at bar for rest of my party, I was served water graciously. Seating was comfortable, service timely and very professional. Food was very fresh and tasteful. We have been at Cassis in past and will continue to make this a favorite stop."

  • "There seems to be mediocre (or overly expensive) Italian restaurants popping up on every corner of the upper west side (Gennaros is the welcome exception). It is therefore great to have a solid french option. Great food, friendly service, decent wines. We're regulars. It was nice that after a minor mishap with my order (they substituted green beans for Brussels sprouts with no notice), they went out of their way to make it right...free refill of wine and a free additional side. They took ownership of the situation and made us feel well taken care of. I also like the fact that this place isn't inundated by the Lincoln Center show crowds giving it a real neighborhood feel."

  • "Nice to have a mainstay like Cassis on the UWS. Really cozy and quiet for lunch and moderate noise level makes it fine for dinner as well."

  • "My husband and I had dinner on Valentines day. The food/drinks and service were great. It was a last minute reservation so we were grateful that they could accommodate us. The staff was very friendly. Food came quickly enough but not to quickly so we could enjoy the night. Portions were quite big. The restaurant was a little overcrowded but that is how it is in any good restaurant in NYC on Friday night not to mention on Valentines night. I can't even come with anything negative to say about Bistro Cassis. Everything was just perfect. Definitely will be back!"

  • "charming the decoration and french " ambiance". food only regular; not bad but not excellent. few options for wine by the glass. as compared to nice matin, same kind of price, nice matin is an absolutely better option."

  • "Mussels in many dishes are a house specialty. We shared a paella, which turned out to be an attractive and tasty French bistro version of the dish. Service was attentive and efficient but unobtrusive. Atmosphere warm, cozy, and friendly."

  • "We were Lucky, the Bistro Cassis was not full on Sunday January 5th. The food was very good: We had steak, sole and coquille St Jacques as main course. The three of us chose tarte Tatin as dessert: individual portions. One of the best one I've tasted. The waiters were nice and did not push us out of the restaurant (we had intereting things to talk about and stayed till the end). Since the three of us are from Montréal, we appreciated the fact that many of the staff spoke french. MERCI à tous pour une belle soirée!"

  • "We went here for New Year's Eve and enjoyed the food as usual. It is the vest French restaurant in the neighborhood and reasonably priced."

  • "Wanted a spot close to home for New Year's Eve. Although the reataurant was full...we were not rushed. The waiters were very attentive. We were pleased that the regular menu was in effect as well as some specials. We had the salmon and red snapper and both fish dishes were excellent."

  • "We've dined numerous times as this place over the years, so my evaluation is more based on that experience than on comparison to other places. Our waiter made a good recommendation on a nice Gigondas that everyone in our party enjoyed. Our service was generally perfunctory and not really attentive. My dining companions enjoyed their meals. My duck breast (waiter's recommendation over another option being considered) was way, WAY overcooked; rather like a dried-out turkey drumstick and not a nice, juicy red. All-in-all, this was a reasonable option in the neighborhood and meshed with our plans but nothing special."

  • "Nice, cozy, reasonably priced, very French bistro, with a neighborhood feel. Close enough to Lincoln Center for pre-theatre dinner. We had a very enjoyable dinner, the poulet roti for two, good soup and good wine. Desserts looked great as well, but we were too full."

  • "We'd only been here for brunch, but it was wonderful for dinner: delicious, unpretentious brasserie fare (we had poulet roti for two, falling off the bone), very Parisian down to the unsmiling--but very efficient--waiter. We'll definitely be back many times. Do make a reservation, because it was packed."

  • "Mussels were small but the portion was large. I wish the mussels were bigger because I love big mussels but only a few w grit/sand and none were fishy and bad. All good! Great wine. Great service without bothering us Love the pate. Love the beef special and the french onion soup and fresh bread"

  • "Two friends and I had dinner here on a Thursday night. The service was friendly and gave us plenty of time to chat before ordering. The food was good--authentic versions of salads and duck a l'orange. A nice, relaxed bistro atmosphere, too--made for a very pleasant experience."

  • "This is a seriously authentic bistro with a tremendous dinner menu which includes perfect escargot, 4 different preparations of mussels, exceptional sole meuniere, duck and even venison from time to time. Their French bread is exceptional along with the pate mousse they serve it with at dinner -- a lovely touch. The brunch and lunch items are so good: crepes, croques, eggs and omelets, and those mealtimes are good warm weather opportunities to sit outside and watch the crowds going by while sipping bloody Marys."

  • "Small restaurant with outstanding food, especially the mussels. Not inexpensive, but good size servings. From greetings heard to guests from staff, obviously a frequent stop for many neighborhood residents. Waiters could be a bit more attentive, but also don't rush you out. Not a bar hangout because the tiny bar only seats 3 or 4. Good location for Lincoln Center events."

  • "We happened upon this cozy , French bistro last year when visiting the Upper West Side and returned just recently for a second time . Both experiences were positive in every way . The food was delicious , the waitstaff attentive and unobtrusive and the food arrived in the appropriate time . The wine selection was decent but limited and a little pricey . That didn't over shadow the experience in the least. We enjoyed our evening at Cassis very much and look forward to returning next year when we visit the Upper West Side again ."

My duck was perfect and my wife's sole meuniere was excellent. We shared profiteroles which were first rate. Highly recommended!"
