Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. From the beginning, Bistro Campagne has strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food. The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired decor and lively Gallic spirit. It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Michael Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our Midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout the winter. Bistro Campagne is committed to the use of organic food products and strongly supports the sustainable, low impact agriculture movement.Continued

  • "This is my "go to" place whether it's a romantic night out, a quick afternoon lunch for delicious onion soup or a special event celebration. The ambiance is wonderful, outdoor seating is a bonus in the nice weather but inside is just a quaint and charming as well. Staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but the steak frites and hamburger are out of this world! We also took a friend there last weekend and he has a very severe dairy allergy, they didn't think twice about it; were very careful about his ordering and to let him know what he could and couldn't eat. Bistro Campagne is worth putting on your favorite list!"

  • "Great, hearty, yummy French onion soup -- best in the city. The pappardelle appetizer was out of this world with flavor! Beef cheeks were tender, moist, and paired well with the potatoes and spinach. Attentive, knowledgable staff. I always wish they had more appetizing salads -- too much frisee and radicchio, which I find too bitter. Otherwise, though, always a pleasure and a comfortable place to go to get authentic French food."

  • "I'm not a huge fan of french cuisine, but I do have to admit that the items on the menu all sounded very good. I ordered the Salmon and my friend got the steak. His was admittedly better than mine, but both were extremely tasty. The wine list was also pretty extensive. All I can recommend is the Pinot Nior as that's all I had. My one word of advice is do not come here if you're not willing to drop near $100 dollars for a dinner for two. It's a wonderful place with a nice ambiance, but it is kind of pricey. Maybe reserve it special occasions."

  • "We have eaten here a few times and every time it has been wonderful! The food is excellent and the vibe is great. I had the Amish chicken which was very tasty and moist. It was covered with thin onion rings which was delicious. The chicken was placed on a mushroom sauce which added to the overall taste. My wife had the trout which was done perfectly and she loved it. Prior to our main courses, my wife had the salad Lyonaise which was tasty. I had the Heritage Tomato salad which was excellent! For dessert, we shared the chocolate pudding which was a wonderful ending to our superb dinner!"

  • "I have never been disappointed by a meal at Bistro Campagne. This season's special delights were no exception. The ingredients are as local and fresh as possible, the presentation is simple but lovely, and the wine pairings thoughtful.The friend I brought with me needed her meal to be gluten-free, and the server knew what was in every dish and was able to help her choose a meal that was delicious and safe for her. For our budget this is a special occasion place, but I do try to come up with special occasions as often as possible!"

  • "The beautiful live music and charming patio are the best reasons to dine at Bistro Campagne. The food is classic bistro fare, not the best in the city but by no means bad. Everything is pretty consistent although none of the food was memorable. A salad was overdressed, the trout slightly overcooked and the stone fruit cobbler that could have some salt. This is truly a cute place to go for a date though or maybe just a glass of wine."

  • "We've dined at Bistro Campagne many times, so I don't want to make too much of a less than perfect experience, but at this price point you do not want two of three diners in the party reporting fatty and tough steaks. We're hopeful that the changes wrought by the chef's death a while back have not sealed the fate of this, one of our very favorite spots in Chicago. Also, 7:30 reservations seemed to mean that we could not enjoy the lovely patio on a gorgeous night, something I might imagine they would be able to figure out better for their committed diners who plan ahead."

  • "The ambience of Bistro Campagne is delightful. It really made me feel like we were back in a Paris bistro. Even the layout. You feel welcome, and like you do not want to leave. The menu is a successful balance of restraint and opportunity, including french staples such as Steak tartare (wonderful), croque monsieur and madame, steak frites (with two steak options), an assortment of braises, and several fresh fish selections. And dont forget the Bistro Burger- which was delighful. Authentic, charming, absolutely delicious food, a commendable wine list, and all for very reasonable prices. From the city, hop on the brown line train to the stop at Western, and you will be very happy that you did. This is what French bistro dining is all about."

  • "We used to love this Bistro when we lived in the city.The hangar steak was pre sliced and half was medium rare while the other half was well done, not sure but it appeared that I got meat from two different steaks on my plate. The escargot which used to be really good was really bad, too many bread crumbs and worse it looked as if the snails had not been cleaned they had a nasty white membrane attached to them with some white stuff inside of it. I have never seen that at any other time. The salmon was actually pretty good (saved the meal). So whether they just had an off night, we have just outgrown it or the place really has gone downhill doesn't matter, the bottom line is I will no longer recommend or make trips to the city to come here."

  • "We found this place on a whim, and could not have been more impressed with the dining experience. We are a family from DC and spent this past weekend in Chicago. The ambience of both the magical outdoor patio and the cozy indoor dining rooms and bar was unbeatable. Our waiter Patrick was attentive and knowledgable and had a great personality. Every dish we ordered was to die for and our daughters severe food allergies were more than catered to. Bistro Campagne impressed us and we will be back for sure."

  • "This was our third visit to Bistro Campagne and once again we had a very pleasant experience. Everything from the setting of the tables to the courteous and helpful staff was conducive to have a nice dinning affair. The salad Lyonnesse was true to its name. It made me feel for a moment we we're back in Lyon. It's nice to know that most of the produce Bistro serves are from loyal growers. This time we ordered the salmon and it was superb in freshness and taste. I also discovered at Bistro an excellent red wine from French organic grapes that has become one of my favorites. As suggested by our fabulous waitress, we ordered the pain Perdue and were not disappointed. It was delicious! Bistro is the place for excellent food with a French touch."

  • "Bistro Camapgne is in an attractive dining area with a really nice patio - due to the weather, we couldn't outside, but it was obviously a great space. The tables, unlike many restaurants, were actually adequately spaced, lending privacy. Our main issue came when my wife was served piece of whitefish that was literally raw - this isn't a fish that should be served deep pink, but it was. When it was sent back, it was returned to us blackened by char. Setting aside the problem with the food, the delay ruined the dinner for all, as we had to wait for my wife's food to return. Normally, I'd expect a gesture - a free round of drinks, the bad main course to be comped - but the restaurant did nothing. The food for the rest of us was merely ok."

  • "This was our second visit and once again, everything was great from the service to the food. This time we sat outside in the garden patio area and it was so quaint, peaceful and pretty! Last time we ate inside and it's warm and cozy w/ charm. The food is very good. The only surprising thing was this time I ordered the Ratatouille de la Campagne and for $19 it was very small - disappointing and not sure it was worth $19 - although very good. We will be back again - it's a great place!"

  • "If it wasn't for the ambience, the experience would have been a total bust. Our server acted like she just returned from a spa and smoked a joint. The portions were incredibly small- do NOT order the ratatouille! It would be considered a side by most standards. I had the salmon, which was cooked perfectly, but was small and not noteworthy. We left hungry after a $100 bill. We ended up popping in at a bar for poutine and a bottle of wine. Bistro is one of those places that constantly gets recommended, but with so many great spots in Lincoln square alone, it's difficult to say we'll be back."

  • "I requested a quite table when making the reservation a week in advanced. Many people online talked about having a quiet table. When the girl called to confirm our visit, I again requested a table that was quite. She said "of course". Yet, the hostess took us to a table right in the bar area which is the noisiest section of the restaurant. I told her my request and she replied: " this is our busy time." So the birthday dinner was more like eating at a deli! The hostess should have asked us if we wanted to wait for a different, quieter table to open up which we would have done. The food was absolutely delicious, but the acoustics are awful."

  • "We have eaten at Bistro Compagne several times and have always loved it so this could have been an off night. In summary, food was barely fair, service was great and ambiance is wonderful. Staff, as always, is friendly and accommodating. I had Amish chicken which was topped with onion rings and a sauce. Very poor presentation and average food. My husband had hangar steak which he describes as good but not exceptional. Appetizer fritters were average but the aioli was great. I would not rush back but may consider it to try the Tuesday night mussel special on a wonderful outdoor patio."
