A word from Bistro Campagne
Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. From the beginning, Bistro Campagne has strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food. The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired decor and lively Gallic spirit. It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Michael Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our Midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout the winter. Bistro Campagne is committed to the use of organic food products and strongly supports the sustainable, low impact agriculture movement.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We found this place on a whim, and could not have been more impressed with the dining experience. We are a family from DC and spent this past weekend in Chicago. The ambience of both the magical outdoor patio and the cozy indoor dining rooms and bar was unbeatable. Our waiter Patrick was attentive and knowledgable and had a great personality. Every dish we ordered was to die for and our daughters severe food allergies were more than catered to. Bistro Campagne impressed us and we will be back for sure."

  • "This was our third visit to Bistro Campagne and once again we had a very pleasant experience. Everything from the setting of the tables to the courteous and helpful staff was conducive to have a nice dinning affair. The salad Lyonnesse was true to its name. It made me feel for a moment we we're back in Lyon. It's nice to know that most of the produce Bistro serves are from loyal growers. This time we ordered the salmon and it was superb in freshness and taste. I also discovered at Bistro an excellent red wine from French organic grapes that has become one of my favorites. As suggested by our fabulous waitress, we ordered the pain Perdue and were not disappointed. It was delicious! Bistro is the place for excellent food with a French touch."

  • "Outstanding service, atmosphere, and quality dining choices. I haven't been disappointed in 25 years of visits."

  • "Shared the amish chicken but also ordered side of mushrooms and green beans....food was amazingly delicious! Shared onion tart as an appetizer. .....again, amazing. Service was exemplary!"

  • "Bistro Camapgne is in an attractive dining area with a really nice patio - due to the weather, we couldn't outside, but it was obviously a great space. The tables, unlike many restaurants, were actually adequately spaced, lending privacy. Our main issue came when my wife was served piece of whitefish that was literally raw - this isn't a fish that should be served deep pink, but it was. When it was sent back, it was returned to us blackened by char. Setting aside the problem with the food, the delay ruined the dinner for all, as we had to wait for my wife's food to return. Normally, I'd expect a gesture - a free round of drinks, the bad main course to be comped - but the restaurant did nothing. The food for the rest of us was merely ok."

  • "Everyone at my table of six has been fortunate enough over the years to have had amazing dining experiences in France. Bistro Campagne brought us all back to those delicious days. Not haute cuisine, just beautifully prepared classic French bistro fair. Comfort food that goes to 11. This is a destination that apparently everyone knew about but me. So glad I know now."

  • "This was our second visit and once again, everything was great from the service to the food. This time we sat outside in the garden patio area and it was so quaint, peaceful and pretty! Last time we ate inside and it's warm and cozy w/ charm. The food is very good. The only surprising thing was this time I ordered the Ratatouille de la Campagne and for $19 it was very small - disappointing and not sure it was worth $19 - although very good. We will be back again - it's a great place!"

  • "If it wasn't for the ambience, the experience would have been a total bust. Our server acted like she just returned from a spa and smoked a joint. The portions were incredibly small- do NOT order the ratatouille! It would be considered a side by most standards. I had the salmon, which was cooked perfectly, but was small and not noteworthy. We left hungry after a $100 bill. We ended up popping in at a bar for poutine and a bottle of wine. Bistro is one of those places that constantly gets recommended, but with so many great spots in Lincoln square alone, it's difficult to say we'll be back."

  • "Loved the outdoor area. Interesting menu and good service. Only thing missing was fresh squeezed oj. Can't have a mimosa with low end orange juice."

  • "Lovely atmosphere on a summer evening. The signature dish (poulet) paired with a crisp, dry white wine with only a hint of citrus made me believe that I was in a café in France. But who needs France when sitting in a wonderful restaurant in Lincoln Square. A wonderful gem! Service was spectacular. Thank you Patrick!"

  • "I requested a quite table when making the reservation a week in advanced. Many people online talked about having a quiet table. When the girl called to confirm our visit, I again requested a table that was quite. She said "of course". Yet, the hostess took us to a table right in the bar area which is the noisiest section of the restaurant. I told her my request and she replied: " this is our busy time." So the birthday dinner was more like eating at a deli! The hostess should have asked us if we wanted to wait for a different, quieter table to open up which we would have done. The food was absolutely delicious, but the acoustics are awful."

  • "The food is great, atmosphere is cozy and the volume level is manageable. The wine list is vast and wine by the glass is good and reasonable. Don't miss the French onion soup, it was done right."

  • "We got seated quickly...ordered a bottle of red wine suggested to us by our awesome server. Had tasty appetizer. Shared a great salad. Loved our entrees as well. Chose chicken and salmon. Very tasty. Onions served with chicken dish were fab themselves! All good here...Highly recommend."

  • "We have eaten at Bistro Compagne several times and have always loved it so this could have been an off night. In summary, food was barely fair, service was great and ambiance is wonderful. Staff, as always, is friendly and accommodating. I had Amish chicken which was topped with onion rings and a sauce. Very poor presentation and average food. My husband had hangar steak which he describes as good but not exceptional. Appetizer fritters were average but the aioli was great. I would not rush back but may consider it to try the Tuesday night mussel special on a wonderful outdoor patio."

  • "The food was fantastic, but what I really enjoyed was the quiet, civilized ambiance which allowed us to have memorable conversations. In addition, the interior decoration was beautiful. As for the food, the salmon was perfect, as was the lamb. The lemon tart was the best I've ever had."

  • "Food was wonderful. Appetizers and entrees and dessert. Service by Sarah couldn't have been better. She was gracious, and personable and so knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Yet unassuming, modest, charming, smart. We loved her. Ambience of the place also lovely. We were there before show at Old Town School but we could go there again anytime even with no show as a reason."

  • "My husband and I dined here for a much-needed date night without kiddos. When we first looked through the menu, it looked simple. I will admit we were wondering if perhaps we should have chosen to go elsewhere...our date nights are very precious! But everything we ordered (I had salmon, my husband had ratatouille) was perfectly cooked and delicious. There was a great balance of flavors. I thought the mint that came with salmon sounded like it could be overpowering, but it was delicate and really added to the dish. We've talked about the food and our night many times since. Highly recommended!"

  • "Expensive restaurants need to have a no children or baby policy after 7ish! I don't care to have "crying, upset babies' with my dinner. Open table should have a check box for restaurants that have a no children policy."

  • "Amazing french food, consistently good. Wait staff is incredible. The croque Madame is out of this world, and if you like calves liver, try it here. We always end our meal with the bread pudding which is lighter than the chewy mass you find at most places. This place is so romantic, with little rooms and outdoor spaces tucked away and very quiet."

  • "I had especially requested a tble in one of he quieter rooms but was given one near the bat.. they said the bar doesn't get moisy and of course, it isn't a TV bar, but , let me tell you , it was very very noisy. Still, it is a lovely place."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in Lincoln Square! I've been coming here since they opened and can honestly say I've never been disappointed. The food is great, the service is great and ambience is wonderful whether you want a nice romantic dinner for two or as a group, this is a wonderful spot! "

  • "We were there this past Wednesday after we received our marriage certificate earlier that day in downtown Chicago. We come here every year for our anniversary and they never disappoint. The food was delicious, the service was sweet and attentive and the ambiance was warm and welcoming - not stuffy and not super-loud. We love this place! "

  • "He liked his appetizer and salad. She found the appetizer oversized--a meal in itself. He found the dinner unsatisfactory (and the waiter avoided dthe table after depositing the dishes). She found the meat good the frites soggy. Overall: don't plan on returning."

  • "Excellent food, service, and ambience. We ordered the croque madame and steak frites. Frites were crispy and salty, steak cooked perfectly, and croque madame had mornay sauce (some places only do the egg, no sauce). Good looking cocktails as well, although I only had one (Duchesse, which was delicious). The outdoor area is very sweet and romantic. This is a great place for a date. "

  • "We celebrated my dad's birthday here the other day and had a great meal. The charcuterie appetizer was delicious, as were our cocktails (kudos to our server for suggesting Bulleit bourbon when my dad's favorites Wild Turkey and Maker's Mark were not available--he loved it). We had my 3-year-old and 2-month-old with us, but no one batted an eye. I do believe my son is very well-behaved when we are out to eat so while I believe this is kid-friendly in that they are totally fine with you bringing children, in no way am I saying it's OK to let your kid bounce around or yell or otherwise behave nutty. Our entrees (I had the lamb, my dad had the chicken, my husband had the bistro burger, son just had frites and a Sprite) were superb. Thanks!"
