A word from Bistro Campagne
Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. From the beginning, Bistro Campagne has strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food. The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired decor and lively Gallic spirit. It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Michael Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our Midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout the winter. Bistro Campagne is committed to the use of organic food products and strongly supports the sustainable, low impact agriculture movement.Continued

  • "This restaurant has been recommended to me by many different people, so my family was excited to try it out. The service and the food were okay... nothing exciting (and I even got the trout, which was the dish that the waitress recommended). For the price you pay, it really wasn't worth it."

  • "I know that there may be people who would disagree and think this was a good thing, but the Portions were too big. I thought the Food Was Excellent, but the portion size was trop gros and not au francais. Small portions would have made everything more French. The American obsession of thinking that more food is better dulled the experience for me. With that said, I thought the salmon and the chicken were very delicious. My heaping side of mushrooms were tasty but I could only eat one quarter of them."

  • "I reserved a table at Bistro Campagne for my birthday on the advice of a friend. I can tell you, it was the best birthday dinner I have ever had. We ordered off of the fixed menu and had the accompanying wine suggested. It was amazing! The food was wonderful, the atmosphere friendly, and the staff amazing! It's not pretentious like you would expect French restaurants to be, everyone is kind, knowledgeable, and equipped to help you choose the best meal of your life. I had the Amish chicken, and I can honestly say I haven't had anything close to it in my life. The chicken was moist and so unbelievable flavorful I wanted to cry. I don't believe I will ever have anything like it. The wine was perfect, and the list extensive. Perfect Date Spot!"

  • "Bistro Campagne is a regular and delicious place for us to have a special meal - living in the neighborhood it's a nice walk. Service is always attentive, including to those of us with dietary constraints and willing to recommend options. The food - effectively Alsatian influenced french - is nicely prepared and presented. Hearty without being coma-inducing, and largely locally sourced. During the more clement months, getting a seat on the patio is a special treat - alfresco food, watching the neighborhood go by. Strongly recommended."

  • "If you are looking for a different kind of place with a unique ambiance, good wines and superb food, Bistro Campagne is it. The place is warm, inviting and intimate. The service is attentive, knowledgeable and very cordial; the wine list is fantastic and includes an organic wine from Provence that has become one of our favorites. The menu is just right and the prix compri is fantastic. We have had the duck, the pork, the chicken, and every time the experience has been unique and satisfying. Fresh food and excellent selection of produce seem to be important for Bistro. Parking across the street is very convenient and the warm and French atmosphere of this place makes your dining experience something really special. A place to come back to."

  • "Highly recommend Bistro Campagne! The food is wonderful, very much what you would expect from a bistro - onion soup, charcuterie, steak frites, etc. with some additional, creative dishes as well. The weeknight Prix Fix is impossible to beat - three courses with wine pairings is $48. Nice, intimate restaurant with a country-home feel, not too bright or noisy. But the staff is what really makes this restaurant special. Really amazing, very accommodating and they know their stuff. I've been here many times and I am always reminded of how much of a difference great service can make."

  • "Celebrated our last 3 anniversaries at Bristro Campagne. Chichen entre is outstanding! At our last dinner we had two different bottles of champaign each recommended by our server and both were great. For desert, I had bread pudding, which was excellent! My spouse and I are already planning when we will return."

  • "I actually do love Bistro Campagne and have been there several times. I was very much looking forward to our dinner this past Saturday night. We went early hoping to beat the rush. Our server was lovely but she actually failed to check in while we were eating our entree, which it turned out that I was not so happy with, so I never had the opportunity to get it corrected. I wasn't in the mood to disturb the fine time my date and I were having by trying to track her down, so I suffered through and ate as much as I could tolerate of the New York steak. It was SO tough and stringy I truly could barely eat it. The waitress did finally show up after we finished our entree's to hand us dessert menu's, but never once asked how our dinner was!"

  • "We were celebrating my wife's birthday. Bistro Campagne is one of her favorite restaurants in Chicago. The food, here, is always very good. The wine list has an excellent selection of reasonably priced offerings and if you love desserts they have a great selection. If you're in the area this is a definite stop. Best to have reservations for Friday and Saturday because it is very popular with the locals. You can take a chance and walk in because you cam eat at their small bar on a first come first served basis. For excellent French country style food and atmosphere, this casual bistro is a definite four thumbs up. Bon appetite!"

  • "Food & ambiance is very good. The best & riches escargot we have ever eaten. All the dishes are loaded with butter & garlic. Service was ok, not great. It's a north Chicago French bistro, so if you are staying downtown, plan on a $25 cab ride. If we lived in in the area, we would go quite often, but not special enough to spend a half hour in a cab."

  • "The food was amazing and our waitress was terrific. The atmosphere of this restaurant brought me back to Paris and was cozy and laid back. We had a difficult customer next to us (ordered with a ton of specifications and then didn't like what she ordered, loud complainer) and the waitress was so great with her. I also ordered a glass of wine that I didn't really like and the waitress immediately replaced it with a great recommendation that I loved! Truly a great evening out!"

  • "This restaurant never fails to be excellent. The food is consistently good as is the service. We go twice a year or so and just wish it was closer to our home so we could go more often. This is a French gem I do not hesitate to recommend."

  • "Bistro Campagne is great for upscale, but not stuffy, dining. The food is usually excellent. On this most recent occasion, my two friends had the roast chicken (what I usually get), and both said thier dishes were fabulous. For a change, I went with puff pastry with wild mushrooms, and was a bit disappointed. The serving size was rather small (more appropriate for a starter course), and was only luke-warm when it was served. I chose not to send it back to be re-heated because I was really hungry. For dessert, I can enthusiatically recommend the Creme Brule, which was wonderful. Nonetheless, I was still hungry when I left, and will likely stick with the roast chicken in the future."

  • "Been there twice before and each time were not disappointed. Had asked for the bay window table and our request was fulfilled. My husband had the duck and I had the calves liver -- wasn't daring enough to try the Baby Cheeks. Both entrees were DELICIOUS. Especially impressed with the liver served in a stew-like manner rather than a single slice. Very innovative. We will definitely be back. Want to try the Sunday Brunch as well as dine in the garden. It being Saturday evening, noise level was not conducive to quiet conversation but the happy atmosphere more than made up up for that."

  • "Really enjoyed the food and the service. My only caveat is that it was really loud, although we had a late (8:30) seating and that noise dissipated as the evening wore on."

  • "Menu never fails to please. Our server was attentive without being intrusive. When the dessert we ordered didn't arrive until about 20 min. after we ordered it, she kindly took it off the bill, although we hadn't complained."

  • "Valentine's Day can be a tough day to go out to any restaurant, but bistro seated us immediately. Our servers were always attentive, glass always full. Food was cooked to perfection. Delicious dessert and coffee. Really felt like we spent a whole evening there, in a good way. Can't wait to go back"

  • "We traveled from Palos Heights and hit some horrendous traffic en route. I called to tell them we would be late. About 45 mins. later I called back to let them know we were still coming. The host who answered both times was just a gem, and said they would be happy to save the table for us. We finally arrived, about an hour late and received a warm friendly greeting that melted the frustration of the traffic away. We were seated immediately and our wonderful server continued the warm welcome taking a much needed drink order and offering her insight into menu items. The food...............AMAZING!!!!!! Ambiance................. Perfect ! I can't wait to return in the summer to enjoy their food al fresco. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We went there for Valentine's Day 2014. Everything was good but the food was not up to their normal very best. The Berkshire pork chop, which we've had there before was marginal."

  • "A beautiful, rustic Bistro. Food was excellent, wine list is a bit short but filled with great values. Server was very friendly and helped guide us through menu. The best part was everyone from the host, to bartender, busser and our server was so hospitable and genuinely made us feel welcomed. We look forward to coming back--often. Note-- we ate here late. I half expected the fatigue of a busy service to have impaired service-- which couldn't have been farther from the truth."

  • "Restaurant Week really put this bistro on my radar. It's a great spot just up the street from Old Town School of Folk Music not too far from the El. It was very lively on a Thursday night. Our server Lindsey was outstanding, very friendly, joked around with us. Every one on staff who came to our table was just really cool. We did 3 course meal. I would recommend every dish I had... caramelized onion & gruyere pastry, steak frittes and fig bread pudding. Cute French bistro with outside dining as well. Two thumbs up."

  • "Went for restaurant week and was impressed by the prix fixe menu. We started with mussels and the salad - perfect, amazing broth for the mussels, great for bread dipping. For dinner we had steak frittes and the cassoulet (added to the menu last minute) taste explosion. I will be back for the cassoulet! Then dessert - the fig and brown butter bread pudding (aka pain perdu) was lovely. I would not have changed a thing, right down to our attentive and informative waiter. It was an amazing dining experience."

  • "We celebrated 2 of our good friends birthday here. We got there on time but we waited for 20 minutes before we were seated, but they were so apologetic and gave us a round of champagne on the house for the inconvenience. Very nice touch. I felt bad on the 2 couples eating by the entrance because our backs(buts) were on their face because there were no place to wait. Anyway, food was amazing, service was impeccable, very good experience overall. I'll definitely come back and recommend this place to our friends."
