Diner Reviews
  • "Old world decor that was cozy yet elegant. I had the beet salad, lovely olive oil. Grilled seafood where the scallops and shrimp were cooked quite well. Service was attentive and friendly. Low noise level made it great for conversation."

  • "Beautiful and characteristic French restaurant, great for a romantic dinner."

  • "The food was very, very good. But the service was not, and made the experience less than worth the prices such good food should definitely be worth. First of all, the air-conditioning was either not working or was sub par, not great for a summer evening. Second, an issue about the bill was resolved less than satisfactorily. A misunderstanding about the bill was brushed off, and the owner was quite a cold fish. What could have been a perfect evening was less so."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely meal with a choice of indoor or outdoor dining for our party of 6. The food was fantastic - best scallops and seafood grill I have had in a long time. The service was a bit slow to start, but was fine during the meal."

  • "We are from Texas and love coming to our nation's capital restaurants. This was a great find. Loved, loved it. Great staff, great food, great atmosphere. I highly recommend it! We had stuffed chicken breast, duck and sea bass; all delicious. Lobster bisque is to die for. Delicious salads."

  • "I have never written a review before, but I daresay I must share this experience for the good of everyone. I've traveled and dined in many restaurants around the world, including some of the best in Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Athens, Istanbul, New York, Madrid, Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Boston, and others. Despite all that, I was extremely surprised to find the best meal I have ever had was in this unassuming restaurant in DC. The mood is perfect for you and your significant other, the waitresses are charmingly French, the decors intimate, and the food is classical French honed to the pinnacle of taste. I would travel to DC again just for another dinner at this restaurant."

  • "I wanted to take my wife to a good restaurant in DC to celebrate our aniversary and this was the perfect one! My wife enjoyed everything, in fact, she compared her soup with one that she had in Barcelona. And for me was like eating in a great gourmet restaurant in Paris or Peru. I was not expecting such good food here! Outstanding Food!"

  • "The food was outstanding and the service superb. We were celebrating a birthday and I couldn't think of a better way!"

  • "Nice rowhouse conversion inside. brings back memories of the house of secrets. LOL. The red curtains were way too much, but I liked it. Edith Piaf, as expected in an old style french place. My french wife loved the bread, as she said it was REAL french bread. Wonderful french waiter named JC i think. I am told that chest hair is a sign of masculinity. That puts JC up there with Chuck Norris and Wolverine."

  • "My wife and I had as good a dining experience as we have had in a long time. The food was superb and our server Damian was a real pro."

  • "Quiet and quaint. Delicious food, average prices for sit down meals. Good service. I recommend reservations."

  • "The staff is very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. I've gone with friends and colleagues and everyone has enjoyed their meal to the fullest."

  • "We've been dining here for a couple of years. The patio is great on beautiful summer nights while the dining rooms are wonderfully cozy on those chilly winter nights. The decor can best be described as whimsical Bohemian chic. I know some feel the service can be slow; I, on the other hand, feel that it encourages one to linger over what can be a superlative and gorgeously presented dinner. Last night I had the always outstanding gazpacho and my personal favorite, the vegetable terrine. The kitchen does a masterful job with fish--the sea bass in champagne sauce is truly superb--but less so with beef. And I now avoid the appetizers. They're just too overly conceived & over worked. Stick with the uniformly excellent salads and soups."

  • "Brunch is always so great at Bistro Cacao. The pastry basket is awesome and the entree and side options are plentiful."

  • "I really enjoyed the dinner at Bistro Cacao. It was my first time at this restaurant. The food was delicious and the server very friendly. The only problem was the noise. The music was nice but a little bit loud and, on top of that, we were sat in the same room with a party of 20 people who were celebrating a birthday and were extremely loud in their conversation and singing. If we had been sat in another of the many rooms that this restaurant has or even outside, the evening would have been perfect."

  • "Food is excellent-- especially the sauces. Of special note is the grilled calamari over pineapple and topped with cheese."

  • "Once again, an excellent dining experience within walking distance of our house on the Hill. The food was prepared to perfection - salads, entrées, dessert. Always a quite atmosphere that enables you to converse with your significant other!"

  • "The staff was wonderful. They gave us a great table in the window alcove. An excellent place to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary."

  • "Decor is a little precious, but very comfortable. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was carefully prepared and altogether delicious. Can't wait to return on next trip to DC."

  • "The food and service were exquisite. If I had to lodge only one complaint it would be that there were gnats flying around my wine however the restauarnt is so good that not even a thousand gnats would keep me away! Bravo !!"

  • "Super charming and spectacular food -- the gazpacho is the best I have ever had!"

  • "Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood this quaint French bistro is definitely worth eating at. We sat outside which was great! The food was delicious."

  • "The 'Filet Mignon Grillé, Sauce au Porto' is with round about $ 28 not cheap and the portion was smaller than I've expected BUT it's delicious. The service, our waitress Julie, was excellent, also the wine and the bread - finally good bread and butter at the beginning, you don't find that very often ;) The tables were decorated with a single red rose and some rose petals - perfect for date night. And because of some curtains - also in red - it was not too loud."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been there twice. our experiences have been spectacular!! the last time we went, we were extremely late, and the last ones the leave the restaurant. but, I'll say the service was still amazing. our waitress took very good care of us, although she was tired. we took care of her as well (tip) lol The food is delicious. I had the spicy shrimp as apetizeer. Please take your lady here for a romantic dinner, she'll love it!"

  • "The staff: terrific, accommodating. I arrived from NY early; they let me leave my things while I explored Cap. Hill & gave me a place to change my clothes. Many thanks! The wait staff, were knowledgable about the menu, attentive and not overbearing. One problem: the (lack of) freshness of an important item in my salad. I presume this is not Cacao's usual standard--the rest of the ingredients were perfect. Amazing tastes. My friend had the same salad. I should have complained but on a tight schedule and not wanting to disrupt the conversation I was having w my friend, who had the same meal, I pretended all was fine and didn't ask about hers. They should charge more for this salad (it was a bargain) and make sure it is entirely fresh."

  • "Everything, from the drinks, through the appetizers, to dinner and after dinner drinks, was perfect. Service could not have been better. The waiter was personable and attentive without being intrusive, and he knew his business there. Atmosphere was awesome, especially for a birthday celebration dinner. Very fine, quaint bistro. You won't be disappointed."

  • "I go to Bistro Cacao at least a couple of times a month: for brunch, lunch, and dinner. In good weather, the outdoor patio is lovely, and the inside is charming, quiet, and very comfortable. The service is excellent. I've tried a lot of dishes and always been pleased -- salmon, shrimp, trout, lamb, salads, the pastries at brunch. I will be back there soon."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC, primarily because the food is good and the service and ambience are out of this world. It's also only three blocks from my house. Wonderful outdoor seating, and inside it is classy and intimate."

  • "We were invited to celebrate Fathers Day ( in Denmark the 5 of June) of our children. We were dinning outside, but had a look inside too and it was very special and good looking. We will be back next time we are in Washington. "

  • "Early dinner on patio...perfect weather, friendly service. Our dinners were the duck, the lamb and the veal chop. All three of us were delighted. Bistro portions, cooked to our request. Gazpacho was great and had watermelon in it! Warm chocolate cake for dessert. Tres Magnifique!"

  • "I think Bistro Cacao has one of the best brunch menus in DC! I am never disappointed!"
    Dined on 6/1/2014
  • "The prix fixe brunch includes a lot of food: a basket of pastries (bread, croissants, choco croissants), an entrée (quiche, salad, eggs, pancakes, etc.) and an extra side dish (fruit, salad, potatoes, bacon). It's a good value, a lovely setting in which to eat, and the food is good but not outstanding. Croissants were chewy, not flaky, eggs benedict good, house salad with shrimp very good, fruit was mostly hard and underripe melon pieces with some ripe pineapple. Coffee was not very strong, and bottomless mimosas were good but not very alcoholic---we drank 2 pitchers of them and felt absolutely no effects afterwards whereas, normally, one glass of wine and I'm asleep. Still, it was a very enjoyable time."

  • "Bistro Cacao has been my choice for brunch, at least a handful of times. Each time they have been consistent with service and food quality. Not to mention it's very unique french decor and homey but Paris chic style. Love this place ! I have also hosted a large group in a private space, and that went very well. Now to get there for happy hour !"

  • "Bistro Cacao was consistently a very good French restaurant from its beginning and quickly became outstanding even when compared with the best anywhere in Washington. But this spring it has somehow stepped it up a notch with the food now truly exceptional, the service even more personable and efficient, and the indoor and outdoor ambiance as impressive and relaxing as ever. The chef's special dessert this past weekend was as fascinating to study as it was delicious. We live nearby and may sell our stove."
