Diner Reviews
  • "Went for chowder and salad on the waterfront and wasn't disappointed. Very good food and service. Highly recommend it if you are in the Wharf and want a nice dinner by the water."

  • "The sourdough bread bowl soups are wonderful. Nice views. Great staff. Loved the restaurant. "

  • "We like Bistro Boudin for a good view of the Bay and Alcatraz, good food and good service. The Dungeness crab sandwich was generous in size and delicious, the steak was well-liked, and the Dungeness crab soup in a bread bowl is always a hit. Servers are attentive and knowledgeable about the menu."

  • "Visited the restaurant on a Friday night. It is one of my favourites, due to the food, the sourdough Boudin bread and the views. Despite the fact that the place was quite busy, service was quick and food was great. My steak was fine and the chicken frites of my companion also tasted perfect. Our table was on the window, with a magnificient view on the water and Alcatraz. I will keep coming back to this place."

  • "First put off was standing in line behind 20 others to speak to the hostess even though we had a reservation. Waiter was grumpy but and couldn't smile, gnocchi with lobster- very little lobster and not much flavour to pesto. My sons portion of steak was minute but the garlic fries huge, very expensive for what you got"

  • "Bread lovers unite! Boudin sourdough bread is classic San Francisco, so you won't want to miss your chance to eat something here - whether it be in the restaurant or bar upstairs, the café downstairs, or in the gift shop and bakery. Location is ideal... right in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf. Take 10 - 20 minutes to walk through the museum on the top floor. Nice history of not only Boudin, but also of San Francisco. Watch the busy bakers baking below! Help yourself to a free bread sample! Yum!"

  • "We were attending an event at thee O'Brien and had lunch beforehand. Great view of the wharf. The food was excellent, especially the crabcake sandwich. Chowder is chowder, so I'll leave that alone. Winelist is only adequate, the beerlist is better. The only issue is the price of their items. Spending $90 for lunch for two is a bit much. Yes, it's the wharf, but, really...?"

  • "Bistro Boudin is one of the best restaurants in the city. The food is delicious, the service is fantastic and the view is unrivaled! The calamari is delicious and not greasy. The Fish N' Chips is probably the best in the city as it is very tender, fresh and flavorful! The portions are insanely large and may be a big factor in contributing to obesity in the States! The service was also very fast and friendly, our server checked with us often but was never intrusive. The highlight, however, was the view! Fantastic full view of SF Bay and Alcatraz Island! Amazing restaurant which we revisit often!"

  • "Had to ask to get my water filled. It was awful. Waiter was not available for us. He was too busy at other tables. I was so thirsty and getting my water filled was so difficult. That is not good."

  • "Gnocchi with Lobster was a favorite even though we leaned towards a more local dish such as crab. Crab tacos were okay. Beet salad was not delivered as described - no Point Reyes Blue cheese, which as a local specialty was a draw to ordering it but still very tasty. My daughter had the soup in a turtle-shaped bread bowl. She loved the presentation, only complaint "a little too clammy" - a good thing since it shows there were actual clams in the clam chowder! The kids liked browsing through the museum & did that for the entire (short) time before our order came. Oddly, we had to ask for bread and butter which seemed ironic - I would have thought that a restaurant built around their bread bakery would offer this immediately & without request!"

  • "Yes, it has become franchised... It's not the absolute best gourmet in SF, but it is worth every penny you spend! I love the Coippino?? (Italian seafood soup). And the fresh bread is awesome! My kids love coming here!:) and of course my daughter loves the chowder bowls."

  • "We were very excited to eat at Boudin Bistro on this visit. Made a reservation & were seated right away. Our waiter came by to take our drink order & disappeared for about 5 minutes. He came back, took the food order, & left for 15 minutes. We had to ask a busboy for a bread basket as our waiter never offered us one. Food was underwhelming. I ordered the crab fish tacos, the smallest tacos ever seen. Tasty but should have been listed as an appetizer & not an entree. My husband's fish & chips was good, but again smaller portion. For $53, we had lunch that we could have gotten for 1/3 the price by walking to fisherman grotto. Advice: go to the standup order downstairs for same food & bread & avoid upstairs restaurant. Too pricey for lunch."

  • "We stopped here for dinner. Initially felt like we had a great server, but he just turned out to be overly chatty when he felt like it. He did not cater very much to our needs. We did not receive refills on water or bread. My drink was literally slammed in front of me. We had nod steak in our order which was rare. When we asked to get it cooked more he responded "oh really?". No apology, no of course we will take care of it. The steak returned medium rare at best with half of the sides missing. The chicken was pretty dry in a juicy sauce that made the fries soggy, my sole fish was very bland in flavor. Once the check arrived our server became chatty again, but so obviously just to get a tip."

  • "I know it's on the wharf so it was going to be more expensive, but more than $100 for 2 adults and a child seemed a little excessive! Kids meal for $10... really?! Food was ok, but nothing we couldn't get at home."

  • "Made reservation for 5, quickly brought to our table. Delayed bar service more than 20 minutes and there were only 4-5 couples in restaurant. Food was good and waiter attentive, he seemed to be handicapped by his support ."

  • "everything we had was amazing! Especially the famous bread!!!! Your servers were very sweet and accomodating and was not at all bothered when i asked for a candle for my husband's dessert for his bday nor when we asked about all the different items on the menu. We also had an amazing time making our own bread! we cant wait to visit again!"

  • "We came here for Valentine's Day. I got the ceviche three ways (excellent), six oysters on the half shell (excellent but oddly small - maybe I'm just used to Maryland sized?) and the elderflower cocktail (great). My boyfriend got the fries (pretty good - little over greased and over garlic'd for me), the sourdough burger (blegh) and the blackberry cocktail (great.) The issue comes when you compare the cost to what you got. Our total for this came to $88 - considering that the ceviche was appetizer sized, the cocktails were small tumblers ($12 each??) and his burger was unsatisfying I just couldn't recommend it. Maybe lunch prices are better. For comparison - great dinner in Sausalito was $55 and food was *excellent* hard to justify."

  • "This is a great alternative for a bright view of the wharf while enjoying great sourdough bread. The food was good, and they were flexible seating our group which grew from when I made a reservation. The Cioppino was excellent. Enjoyed the dinner we had there."

  • "The Bistro was good. Front desk was great when we had to change reservation. Service was just ok. Everything we ordered seemed to take a while - from the 1 beer, to even seeing the waiter. I ordered the Dungeness crab, which was delicious. However - it was delivered with no tools. No cracker, no cocktail fork. I tried to flag someone down several times. The table next to us finally got someone, but she was a busser with limited English. She tried hard to help, but it took her 3 trips to get me the right tools. Crab was good. But by then it was cold. Too much work on my part - for cold crab. Waiter should have offered us free dessert or something. He did not."

  • "this was our 2nd time here... 1st time the waiter was dismal... took forever and moved at 1 mph. this time, made reservation and had to call MAX at the front counter twice to tell him we would be late. MAX was wonderful. upon arrival we got our window seat as requested and DAN our waiter was fantastic. It was a lil pricey but hey, it's a tourist area at Fisherman's wharf... overall was a very nice dining experience... we were seated in some "private dining room" are back in the corner... VERY nice."

  • "We are locals and our niece was coming out to visit for work. To get her out of her 'business hotel' and be able to see some sights, we took her out to dinner at the wharf. Although we have dined and many restaurants on the wharf, including the little cafe below, we had never eaten at the upstair restaurant at Boudins. What a lovely location, extremely nice staff and quality food. Thank you...we all enjoyed and will be back soon."

  • "GREAT overlooked restaurant in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf.!!! Outshines the old standard traditional Wharf favorites and stands on its own! VERY good food & presentations but it's the amazing outside/ inside show of bakers making fresh sourdough animal shaped bread that is special! Great souvenir to take home along with pictures of the experience! Don't be mistaken into thinking the downstairs cafe is what I'm reviewing, it's the UPSTAIRS dining room that shines . Portions are generous, prices in keeping with other Wharf restaurants. A fun AND educational place! DEFINITELY book while walking around on the wharf. Usually not booked until the "crowd" realizes everything else is!. A great place to spend your Fisherman's Wharf DOUGH!"

  • "I chose the Bistro Boudin because of its location, reviews and menu. We wanted to eat at a restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf prior to the fireworks on New Year's Eve and my husband and I wanted a good Ciopinno. We weren't disappointed. The Ciopinno was excellent. My husband likes spicy food and it had a good spice to it (but not too spicy for me). It was a large portion accompanied by garlic bread for dipping in the tasty sauce. We had two non seafood eaters in our part and they were happy with the flat iron steak. The fried calamari, mussels and ceviche were all very good. The halibut ceviche was all fish with small pieces of red onion. The total bill was not cheap but for its location and quality it was to be expected."

It too almost another 5 minutes before she got to our table after that. Chowder in bread bowls, salad and the cheese plate were all great, just slow service."
