  • "Shoved into a back corner behind a pillar, with no view of the restaurant. And while our server was always prompt with water and bread, she was there about 5 times as often as she needed to be and constantly interrupting conversation. Plus our entrees arrived before our appetizers, and the food runner was visibly annoyed when we explained we weren't ready for them. A surprisingly lackluster experience for such an expensive, upscale place."

  • "We have been fans of Bistro Bis for a long time, but had never tried it for brunch. Good news is that the food did not disappoint. Everyone in our party of 4 ate every bite and enjoyed every dish. I ordered the tomato soup followed by the salmon. Mmmm. While perhaps everyone can serve salmon, not everyone can make such delicious, unique soups - Tomato soup unique - yes at Bistro Bis. The only downside was the service. Our waiter was nice enough, but we did not see him frequently enough and he seemed disengaged - not focused at all on what we ordered or what we might need. Overall a 4 star experience and I will look for a reason to go back for brunch!"

This visit was the first after a long hiatus --too long!-- and we found the same first-class cuisine, polished and friendly service, and classy decor that we've always enjoyed.   • "A big disappointment. We booked at 10 am on Sunday for Brunch. Arrived at restaurant to learn that brunch isn't available until 11:30. Really? Service was really poor considering there were very few diners. First cup of coffee was only half filled and cold. Then it took a really long time and two requests to get more. Corned Beef Hash with poached eggs was good. but not the duck confit we all wanted from the "brunch" menu. Definitely a restaurant in a hotel and not the wonderful French bistro promised. They need to try harder!"

  • "We've always enjoyed dining at Bistro Bis with an adult crowd, but unfortunately, we now know that their hospitality does not extend to younger patrons. Upon our arrival I told the host we needed a highchair for my 2-year-old son, which he acknowledged and promptly ignored. He sat us at a booth where he stated a highchair would be "unsafe" though there were plenty of tables that could have accommodated us, without disruption. As a result, my unrestrained son couldn't help but squirm all over, under, and around our table, despite my every effort, making us unable to enjoy our delicious brunch. Listening to your patrons and a little consideration go a long way, and this service fell far short. We likely won't return, with or without my son."

  • "We are in Washington, DC once a year for a conference and go back to this restaurant time and again. From our waiter Steve, to the rest of the staff, the service is superb. The food is always consistent, delicious and well presented. And you never know who you're going to run in to. At this visit we met Senator Elizabeth Warren and got a photo-she is delightful; and met our NJ Senator Corey Booker. Also got a photo with Senator Booker who is very genuine and charismatic. Back to Bistro Bis - just go. You won't be disappointed."

  • "I've been eating here regularly for years--sometimes for a special occasion, sometimes impromptu--and the food is always outstanding. If you can't get a table, you can order off the regular menu or a bar menu at the bar. And if you go early (6-7ish) it's not crowded and the staff are very welcoming of young children."

  • "Back in the District for a conference, I recommended Bistro Bis to my colleagues having been a large group last year. My group could not have been happier. The service was outstanding, spot on and very timely. The waitress asked about our schedule and timing and accommodated our leisurely dining request. We ordered the Assiette de Charcuterie and we had so much fun exploring the various pate's, cured meats and pickled vegetables. The entree's were wonderful and cooked perfectly to order. We'll be back!"

Waiter was afraid to come back to table after 3rd request and sent another waitress over to tell us the bad news... Then he said the manager would come to the table, which didn't happen until the bill came. Disappointing considering the bill was nearly $100 pp..."

  • "When traveling for pleasure or for business we try to find the best food in the area. We have eaten at Bistro Bis maybe 5 other times for dinner and an equal number of lunches. Its interesting that we have never eaten at any other DC restaurant every time we are there. Hmm. Maybe that's why dinner on Wednesday may have been the best meal I remember eating in the USA. Period. It could have been the Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang, or the endive salad, or the appetizer of rabbit, or maybe the way the rockfish was prepared. But combined, I could not stop remembering the flavors the whole next day. I can't wait to return."

  • "We arrive at 5:30 to have a leisurely dinner before an 8:00 play at Arena Stage. We didn't get drinks until 6:00. At 6:30 we still didn't have our appetizers. A comment to the waitress brought our appetizers -- except for one order of soup that she forgot. Then, dinner came crashing out of the kitchen before our appetizers were consumed -- so they were left on a tray next to our table. Of course, we didn't think they were ours because the order looked wrong. Nope -- it was ours, she just got the order wrong again. So we ate our bland flounder and over salty scallops and had time for a quick coffee before leaving. Not actually since coffee that we were assured would be quick took over fifteen minutes."

  • "Great: the boeuf bourguignon, service, host was extremely nice, wine, visual presentation of the food Needs improvement: bartender was rushed and impersonal, the salad with the egg was drowning in dressing - you just don't do that with a runny egg. It overwhelms the point of the egg. The server was a tad sarcastic. Would I go again? Probably, I think this place has lots of potential."

  • "My friend and I both had the risotto which used coarser rice than most other restaurants use and it was not as delicate or as creamy as great risotto can be. We ordered frites but they didn't arrive until we were finished. We had to wait a long time to order and between courses. The opera torte was tasty but a bit dry."

  • "My wife and I are from Seattle but have now moved here, near Chinatown and the Portrait Gallery, and in the excitement of being surrounded by art and fine restaurants have eaten out every night! A lot of fun, but with out of town guests on the way we fell back on Bistro Bis...what a pleasure: a fantastic endive salad, with the endives slightly par-boiled then cooled, and so wonderfully tender but still crisp, was followed by Shad Roe and Sole, both perfectly cooked and with A+ sauces and the best creme brulee (#1, by far, out of 6 cremes in 6 DC nights!) I may have ever had. We came early, but by 7:30 on a week night the place was full, and buzzing, but "quietly(!!)", so real conversation could still take place among old friends."

  • "My wife took me for my birthday. Had to hit a very early seating, to make the theatre, so we sort of had the place to ourselves. The hostess wished me a happy birthday when we checked in, which I thought was classy. Fantastic romantic table in the corner. Both our cocktails were delicious. I had the French onion soup and Boeuf Bourguignon -- two classics that they knocked out of the park. The gruyere cheese on the soup was perfectly melted and browned, and the soup was fantastic. The healthy chunks of braised beef were tender and juicy, served with caramelized lardons and pearl onions over a parsnip puree. My wife had a vegetarian risotto, which she loved. Dessert was a huge hit too - a layered chocolate tort. Strong recommend!"

  • "I've been waiting to dine at this restaurant for quite some time as they have been rated as a Top 100 DC Restaurant. However, the service was extremely slow this Sat. A slice of quiche took an hour from order to table. Three tables around us were served food before us even though they arrived after us. Although, they only ordered salads and frites. The waiter shared that everything is made to order do their food takes a little longer, but I'm thinking it unrealistic for a restaurant to do so for everything on the menu. Try the other restaurants in this group-Vidalias and Woodward Table are better by far. The Host also felt compelled to share that he didn't like my red sweater as it seemed seasonally inappropriate. How awkward..."

  • "1. rude staff interrupted my conversation with the maitre d twice. 2. despite having a reservation I had to wait 12 minutes to be seated. 3. Was seated at table for 4 despite there being an open table for 2 4. was seated near the kitchen entrance. 5. my friend and I ordered the exact same item on the menu yet her piece of fish was really almost twice the size of mine. 6. lots of water refills early but then they forget about it after we dug in."

  • "We hadn't been to Bistro Bis in a while. The redecoration is nice but not a major "redo". The food, as always, is very good. The prices are high but one expects it with the quality of food served. We were there on a Saturday night and found the restaurant very crowded, which is unusual in our experience, for a Saturday night. Given that, the kitchen was very slow. The server did an excellent job of keeping us informed about the status of our meal. The slow kitchen on Saturday night did not make the meal feel worth its cost. For us, the great food was overcome by the slow production time."

  • "I want to preface this by saying that the restaurant has reopened for less than a month. With that out of the way, I found that the food was not that good- the duck I had was tough and the medium steak my fiance had was almost rare- and the service was mediocre and awkward. The wine was great and the ambience very good, however. I may go back in six months to see if they work the kins out."
