Diner Reviews
  • "In an uptight stuffy environment with waiters that are imperious and dismissive - this is the place for you"

  • "Long known as one of the best bartenders in the city, Norman is now offering his unique brand of customer service at Bis. He's make s point to remember your name and he is never content merely to meet your expectations. A true gentleman who understands the art of customer service. I always want to take clients there because I know nothing will ever go badly."

  • "I loved the food, but our section of restaurant was hot. Also, fire alarm went off twice during dinner. Alarm blamed on short circuit."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "The screeching, stomach ache inducing fire alarm kept going off...the first time the staff all just seemed like whatever, but then finally suggested we all leave, times two and three we all stayed. The staff were irritated by it too but the apologies and explanations came far too late. Then after we were finished with after dinner drinks staff started bringing out complimentary desserts (even though we had declined) and on top of it all they were not very good, dry and/or flavorless. We also waited an inordinate amount of time to FINALLY get our check. Usually a place a love but this was a terrible night there."

  • "Bistro Bis truly is a gem. Out of all the restaurants I could pick for a special occasion, I'd pick Bistro Bis. I can't seem to order anything for an appetizer but the Beet Citrus Salad; it is amazing. Lately, I've been ordering the Salmon because it literally melts in your mouth. Two thumbs up with a big smile!"

  • "Food was great, once the seating arrangements clicked . . . arrived early and was there first. Was seated, then waited, and waited. Finally after 25 minutes, called my lunch companion, who had arrived on time and was told she was the first one there, and was seated - elsewhere. In the end, when I called, I found she'd been seated directly behind me and we were back-to-back, not knowing we were waiting and waiting for each other . . . . Otherwise, the food and table service was great!"

  • "The scallop appetizer was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the trout dinner was outstanding. The rissoto was a bit sweet for my taste but was still delicious"

  • "While the food was excellent, our waiter was one of the best parts. This was my third visit to Bistro Bis, and each time, the service has been wonderful. I never felt rushed, rather well cared for. We were given good advice about the menu and wine list. We have recommended it to many friends."

  • "We have been here twice and the food has been outstanding both times. The only flaw was the clientele. So close to the Capitol, Bistro Bis seems to draw self-important congressional and other government types, who thought nothing of occupying a table long after they had finished their meal. That led to our party having to wait 30 minutes for a table (we had a reservation) while one of our party had a plane to catch. There was nothing the restaurant could do and the management was extremely gracious, giving us great service and comped drinks. The upside was the until-then-noisy room got quiet enough for conversation after all the purported power brokers finally left around 1:30 p.m."

  • "Very high regard for the waitress in the bar section who has always waited on the booths in that area. I am blaning on her name, but she is terrific."

  • "I always bring my friends and families to celebrate days or special occasion. Everything is fantastic! Great service, great waiters, great manager, and GREAT FOOD!"

  • "We enjoyed another great dinner at Bistro Bis. The regular menu has lots of delicious options, complemented by creative nightly specials. Take the waiter's recommendations on wine by the glass -- nice selections. Bistro Bis knows how to cook seafood, and it is always fresh and well-prepared."

  • "The atmosphere begins with a super friendly host. The 1940s Parisian vibe is classy. Special orders are not a problem. We even ordered items not on the menu. Excellent tasting Eggs Benedict and mushroom side order that is to die for."

  • "Best spot for a nice lunch near Capitol Hill. Very nice atmosphere; excellent, efficient but unhurried service. Excellent food - at lunch salad entrees and fish are psrticularly good choices."

  • "Having dined here frequently over probably 10 years, I can say that this is consistently my favorite restaurant in DC. There is always a delicious combination of standards like steak frites and creative seasonal specials."

  • "We were seated promptly, the waiter provided assistance in deciding what to order and was attentive throughout, the food was very good, and the atmosphere was right for a quiet business lunch."

  • "Paid by the father! Fish was a little dry from heat lamps. Charcut plate was great! Cocktails were a highlight. The house specialty (what Katie got) was delicious."

  • "This was a nice experience. The food was really good, our waiter, Miguel, was an awesome waiter! Gave us very good tips on wine and food and made us feel welcome. Overall I really liked the place and I'd go back again. My only negative is the price. It's super expensive! It's good to go on occasion, but because it's so pricey I won't be able to enjoy it as often as I'd like. But if you're interested in some good food and a nice dining experience, I'd recommend."

  • "Very nice menu, wonderful service. Could not have been treated better. Exceptional general manager in Don who made us feel so special. Went for brunch, look forward to returning for dinner."

  • "just an okay breakfast. Dinner was lovely -- excellent service, nice setting, above average food. Wasn't the best meal I've had in DC, but it was very good. We shared the beet + goat cheese salad and the scallop + beans special to start. Beets were pretty good, but there was only a tiny drop of goat cheese. Re the scallops, they were tiny + few; beans were better. I had the trout with haricots verts for my main course, which was very good; my friend had the salmon, which was also good. Bread, btw, was excellent. For dessert we shared the petit fours. There were a few standouts, but the majority were not good. Breakfast was disappointing. No croissants in the pastry basket, just a lot of heavy, overly sweet breads."

  • "I had not been to Bistro Bis for some time and was so glad to return here - really good food, good service, and very near to Union Station and the Capitol. Try the oysters on the half-shell with the pickled cauliflower."

  • "After a long absence due, primarily, to geography, a group of seven returned to Bistro Bis for our quarterly dinner. We were not disappointed. Beautifully prepared food, expertly served, in a handsome atmosphere. Nice to see the 'ol gal still knows how to dance!"

  • "2 dinners: Food was remarkable. Edgar was a very helpful, attentive, and kind server. Server on second night diligent but less attentive. No check in after food was delivered. Breakfast server was very challenged (slow water and coffee refills, no check back, and different server left check without comment leading me to feel rushed). Breakfast food was good but not as extraordinary as dinner. Highly recommend dinner -- especially with Edgar as your server. If not for my breakfast experience I would have given five stars across the board, but alas!"

  • "I am a gourmet person, and the mussels I got for appetizer was mort probably the best ever. I am from Denmark, where seafood is very good, so I know what I am talking about. The ingredient used, and the sauce was just fantastic. The meat we got was also very good.... and highly recommended"

  • "This was my second visit to Bistro Bis. Both times the service has been really pretentious. The servers make a big song-and-dance about a formal introduction, but can't pronounce French properly. The items on the menu, from the cocktails to the main courses, have odd ingredients (twists on traditional recipes) that, frankly, don't work very well together."

  • "We've gone twice for company group lunches and the service has been extremely slow and the wait staff less than friendly. The food has been great but we are leery to go again unless we know we have at least an hour and half in the afternoon to get back to the office. I had the burger both times and was extremely satisfied with it. Others in the party enjoyed their dishes, trout, risoto etc. but didn't feel full afterward. The wait staff was hesitant to make dietary substitutions, scoffing at simple requests to replace the hamburger bun with lettuce."

  • "High quality food prep and excellent service but at a steep price. But what do you expect in lobbyist central?"

  • "Food always great ,but what keeps us coming back is the great wait staff. Steve is very helpful, pleasant and attentive. So keep up the great service and food"

  • "A truly great culinary experience- like Washington, D.C, was in the passed. The menu choices were very good, the food was prepared to perfection and, above all, service was rendered in a professional manner. This is one of the few restaurants I have experienced where service is a profession and not merely a entry-level job."
    Dined on 5/19/2014
  • "We eat early because we're both over 70. The restaurant starts filling up after 7:30...which was fine with us. The selection and service were both excellent. This is not a quiet restaurant after 7:30...the locals are very vocal."

  • "The food was wonderful however the wait staff was a bit short with us. "

  • "We have been to Bistro Bis many times over the years for Sunday lunch. The menu has been more extensive than the limited fare offered on this occasion. Service has always been good with attentive experienced waiters. Our waiter on this occasion was adequate, but seemed preoccupied when asked questions about the menu. Of particular note was an apparent reluctance to supply more than minim amounts of bread before the meal was served. Hopefully, these shortcomings were a temporary phenomena. We will return for another meal, but the restaurant will definitely be on trial."

  • "I ate at Bistro Bis with a close friend. We both love food, and ordered so much. Our server was fantastic, especially once he realized we weren't messing around with the menu and his dessert recommendation (the Apple tart) was incredible. I would definitely return to this restaurant. The only issue was the acoustics were not great, and it was busy so it was a tad loud."
    Dined on 5/13/2014
  • "The lunch menu is just like the dinner menu...in fact, they are the same...with perhaps a special or two. Portions are just right, so you don't end up stuffing yourself. Service is courteous. Server took our food to the wrong table but immediately fixed that problem. Never had a bad meal here."

  • "This place is in a hotel near the Capital tucked away on some side street. We had a reservation and they seated us immediately. The waiter was initially very attentive but as the evening went on and as the place became busier, we didn't get the attention we expected. The food was very good, but they sat us along a long bench seat where we were snug up next to other patrons. The place was a little too loud and because of our seating, my wife and I just felt we were dining with a group of 200 people instead of just the two of us. This place is very open with high ceilings, so it is not one of those cozy romantice restaurants. Went back another night for drinks in the bar and service and vibe was much better. "

  • "Charcuterie was great. The fish dishes was liked by everyone. The rabbit was superb--tender and peeling off the bone. Definitely up for another visit."

  • "Took a small group, and other than me, it was the first time any of the group had been there. Everyone got a different dish, and they were passed around the table. It was all superb, the wait staff attentive and knowledgeable, atmosphere welcoming - and great location. I can recommend without reservations (though I would recommend them)."

  • "Overall we were very pleased with our dining experience. Our server was professional yet personable. The food was of a high calibre. I would gladly dine here again if I happen to return to DC. I have no hesitation in recommending Bistro Bis to others."

  • "Wanted a quick meal before an event in DC. Waitress was attentive and helpful and seated us in the bar area. Food was great and served relatively quickly. Good people watching at the bar. Very good experience and would go back."

  • "Very near the Capitol and Union Station, but just around the corner so it's not spotted by the hoards of tourists in the area. The steak tartare was spot-on. The onion soup was quite nice, but not extraordinary. Definitely will return."
