A word from Bistro 7
Bistro 7 is an elegant, food-first American BYO bistro located in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic Old City section. Chef/Owner Michael O’Halloran relies on a network of local, organic farmers for the pristine ingredients that form the basis for his eclectic American bistro dishes, and the ever changing menu reflects the best that the season has to offer. The understated, minimalist décor features white linen tablecloths, filigreed heirloom flatware and graceful stemware, and the open kitchen provides an intimate glimpse of the chefs at work. Try the 5 course, $35 Chef’s Tasting Menu (available Tuesday through Thursday) and see why critics have called Bistro 7 the "Jackie O. of the Philadelphia BYOB scene"Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Bistro 7 provided us with a delightful dining experience. We had attended a theater matinee and arrived at the restaurant shortly after its 5:30 opening. We were warmly greeted by our server and then enjoyed a chat with Michael, the chef/owner (topics ranged from the Old City neighborhood to sourcing fresh ingredients from Lancaster County farms). The meal was outstanding - escargots to start followed by lamb for my wife and a delightfully moist chicken breast for me. The menu changes frequently, based on the availability of fresh ingredients. This fact, along with the friendly atmosphere and delightful flavors, will ensure our return in the near future! "

  • "As always the menu had wonderful choices. This is well considered food by a terrific chef. I've had a ton of oysters, but the lichee was an inspired addition and the quality was perfect. Enjoyed the braised rabbit with fava bans and asparagras. Desserts were good and a smart choice unless you have a full time pastry chef. Will be back again."

  • "I really liked this restaurant very much. The service was bright and friendly.Menu is very diversified. The beet terrine had so many flavors and textures as was the gnocchi. My only complaint is the prices are ridiulous and not on an even par for amount of food, which I took some home,I would like to see less $signs or more substance!"

  • "This truly is a find! Amazing fresh and locally sourced items on menu. Chef is creative without being fussy. Just a great, great place!"

  • "Always a treat eating here. Imaginative diverse and always delicious culinary fare. Skip dessert (did not match the outstanding savory fare) and enjoy!"

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed everything about my dinner at bistro 7, despite the server that took my plate from me before I was finished and tried to take the checkbook that I hadn't touched 10 times in 2 minutes. The food was so good that I will go back again and again and definitely recommend to anyone... I just hope for a different server."

  • "I hadn't been to Bistro 7 in a while, so of course I forgot it was BYO. My bad. My friend & I shared an appetizer (gnocci), which was excellent. My entree was tasty overall, but the "Peking Duck" was misleading as it was a little bit of a far departure to be in any way truly referential. The duck breast itself was also slightly overcooked, leading to slight toughness & a greyish color, though still flavorful. The chocolate pot de creme dessert was good but nothing special (my friend chose it). I would potentially go back there but it wouldn't necessarily be my first choice."

  • "Great place. Great food. It's pretty noisy, so a big group might be hard if you're trying to hear across a large table. Have been there before and will definitely go back."

  • "We had a delicious meal for a winter night - very rich and tasty. The menu was interesting and varied, except that there were insufficient light appetizers to balance the very rich entrees. Even the salad had a 'creamy parmesan" dressing. The beet appetizer was beautiful and delicious but a little spendy at $15. Fortunately none of the desserts appealed. Oh - I was extremely thirsty the rest of the night, so a lighter hand with the salt would be helpful."

  • "My fiancee and I have been coming here for a couple of years. And, it's always the same. Some dishes are really good; others are boring and mediocre. The pasta dishes are not particularly good or interesting. The chicken and fish are consistently good and sometimes interesting. The escargots are consistently very good and remind me of Burgundy, France, where this dish originates. The soups are also consistently very good, but not particularly interesting. Michael is a very "safe" chef, which can be good (or not) depending on your culinary style. The service is always harried, but pleasant. One more person is needed to make the service significantly better. I recommend eating at Bistro 7. You'll enjoy it."

  • "We went for a romantic dinner and were thankfully seated in a secluded corner. Despite being as far as possible away from them, we were still overwhelmed by the noise from an obnoxiously drunken party of six also seated on the first floor. I thought larger parties were put on the second floor, and with the small size of the restaurant I really felt like the atmosphere was ruined. The food was good, certainly well beyond the normal fare, but in a city like this I didn't feel like the prices match the quality. I've dined around at many other fine restaurants like Parc and Matyson, where the food was an incredible experience. The bill came out the same, but I just felt the taste fell a little short."

  • "First time visit. Nary a false note. Everyone in our party of four had a delightful experience and vowed to return. Every dish was beautifully presented and well executed. Highlights were the fried oyster, foie gras and gnocchi appetizers and the cobia, skate and duck entrees. Just added to my list of go-to places in the neighborhood."

  • "I had walked past Bistro 7 several times and it looked appealing. We decided to try it during Restaurant Week. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The gnocchi was the best I have ever eaten. Normal prices seemed a bit high, which had deterred me. However, since it is a BYO, I think the cost would be about the same as I usually spend including drinks. Definitely will return."

  • "The food is superb, the presentation top-notch. My husband and I have eaten here dozens of times in the last six years and have ALWAYS had a stellar dining experience. We regularly bring out-of-town guests here because we know we will get a GREAT meal. Favorite dishes include his escargot appetizer, Salmon entree, Short ribs entree and Rice Pudding dessert. He occasionally offers a Multi-Course Tasting Menu that's a GREAT value. Private dining room upstairs can accommodate small parties & is very affordable as it is a BYOB establishment. His focus is on Farm-to-Table. He insists on only the freshest local ingredients for his dishes. Parking lot within a block for those that are coming here by car if you inquire when booking your table."

  • "My Girlfriends and I had a wonderful time dining here for restaurant week. We loved every dish! The gnocchi was perfectly sinful, as was the truffle pâté. Their colorful beet terrine was a delight to the senses; it was absolutely beautiful while the fesh flavor satisfied. This was our second time dining here. Just as before, we left very happy. BYO is the cherry on top- love this place!"

  • "I went for restaurant week and was thoroughly impressed. We made reservations and were seated right away. Our table was right by the door and it was about 18 degrees that night so they had a little space heater by the table. As far as food goes it was delicious. I had the gnocchi for the appetizer and the short rib for the entree. The mood was very relaxed and romantic. The lighting was perfect, the music fit the scene. It took a while for the entree to come out after the appetizer, but that was kind of nice because it gave us a chance to just sit and talk. All in all it was a great dining experience and I would definitely recommend Bistro 7 to others."

  • "My wife and I did not know what to expect, but found that the food and service were great. We started out with the oyster and gnocchi appetizers and they were fantastic. The oysters were some of the best we have had and we pick them anywhere we go if they are on the menu. For our main courses, she picked the skate and I picked the chicken. The sauce on the chicken was delicious, and we both really enjoyed our dinners. We will go back for sure and would recommend this BYOB to our friends."

  • "Apparently I'm the only idiot who went out to dinner in the polar vortex so I can't necessarily judge fairly, my party dined alone which was weird but not the restaurants fault, the lone staff member did her best to make us feel welcome and i applaud her professionalism. the food was good although the price was a little steep and the portions rather small. I loved the decor and the music, very inviting and European but I imagine it would feel cramped if the place was busy. As good a byob as I've found but not quite in the same league as the city's hot spots"

  • "We had a lovely evening at Bistro 7. We chose to order from the regular menu and were very happy with our delicious salads and black sea bass with mussels. Service was perfect -- attentive and leisurely. Our friends enjoyed the duck breast and salmon with lentils. Very reasonably priced. We were happy not to be rushed. Only complaint was that it was very warm inside."

  • "We went to this restaurant for our daughter's birthday. It was a snowy day so they had some cancellations which made the restaurant nice and quiet. There were four of us and we each ordered a different entree. The presentation was beautiful and the food was delicious. Our appetizers and our dessert were also wonderful. The service was attentive and the server was knowledgeable about the menu options. I would recommend this restaurant and look forward to dining there again."

  • "Went to this lovely byob for a special birthday. Everything was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was well-paced- not rushed, not slow. The gnocchi were like delicate pillows, and the duck had just a hint of 5 spice with perfectly crispy skin. The cheese plate was a little disappointing in that it was a single large block of cold Brie, but the sweet sides that came with it were beautiful."

  • "This is our second time at Bistro 7 in Center City and we were even more pleased this time than last. The beet salad is always a special starter and this time we added foie gras, which was exceptional. Main courses of breast of duck and skate were just beautifully presented and delicious to eat. We weren't rushed on a Saturday night and it was a great experience."

  • "Always interesting food, well presented and delicious.Service is generally good, but this time, we had to wait 45 minutes for our entrees, too long on a theater evening. Also, music too loud in such a small space."

  • "Best food ever! It was a short menu with distinctive selections. We were a party of three; our entrées were Skate filet, duck breast, and Scottish salmon. Our starters were green salad, fennel, and escargot. We sampled three desserts. Throughout the meal we kept exclaiming; fabulous! Located in a small narrow building in an eclectic area of Philadelphia the food far outshined the place's ambiance. I am definitely going back for the food!"

  • "Saturday 6pm reservation pre theater. 1/2 full BYOB. Total capacity 37 +/- . Pleasant enough interior, ignoring the green walls and noisy acoustics. Quickly seated in one of the few duce tables. Limited menu, no specials. Ordered some bottled water, main course- skate fish, salad and appetizer gnocchi served as entrees. An hour to prepare? Really?! One piece of room temperature bread each - no more. No checking to see if food was to our liking once food was dropped. We would have liked desert and coffee but at 7:30 we knew we would never make the show, so no go. Sad. Food was really good. We were really prepared & hoping to like this place as we have a subscription to the Arden near by. Later at the theater we find they give 10%off-oh well."

  • "I've been eating at BISTRO 7 literally since it opened. I love it and recommend it to many others. I was so disappointed this past Sat. night. I made the reservation telling them that 1)we needed a table on the first floor because one of the guests wasn't fully mobile and 2) we had an 8 PM show @ Arden. 1) THey put us on 2nd floor........2) They booked too many people for Sat. night w/tix to the show. Service was very slow and we had to skip dessert (our favorite) and rush through entree to make show."

  • "Small place, just 11 tables, 8 years old (as of this writing),with a limited menu . . . about 5 appetizers, entrees and desserts from which to choose. Everything we tried was delicious! And it appears that the menu changes from month to month, which means we'll have to go back! Server was very knowledgeable about the menu and, frankly, very proud of the restaurant. Ambiance was nothing special, but pleasant enough. If you forget to bring the wine, a shop is only about a block and a half away on 2nd below Market St."

  • "Very limited menu -- 4 appetizers; 4 entrees (2 of which were poultry). My wife started with the beet terine which was simply wonderful. I had the escargot and it was like a salt lick. I had the duck which was also salty and my wife had the beef. The beef was okay, but undercooked which was particularly annoying because when the server suggested medium rare, we specifically told her to make it medium. What came out was on the rare side of medium rare. Kind of makes me wonder what would have arrived if she'd asked for rare...a slab of raw meat right from the cooler? Finally, the place is really expensive and, if I'm going to drop $50 a person on dinner, it's not going to be roast chicken."
