Bistro 61 is simply my most favorite restaurant in the East 60's of Manhattan. It's a great neighborhood place -- although not my own residential neighborhood! -- and I send people there all the time. Their moules et frites are a principal reason I go there, but my friends often have the other main courses. I note that the wine list is also excellent, as are all of the appetizers. All of the staff (wait staff, bus-people) are very responsive, friendly and helpful. For all of these reasons, I tend to eat there several times a year. It has the feel of a Parisian bistro, and is warm and welcoming.

We had been eating at Marche du Sud on 1st Ave. and came across Bistro 61 through a search on Open Table. These two restaurants are operated by the same owner. This one has the classic French bistro menu so we both chose something that is our personal favorite, steak friites. It was very well prepared and presented. The ambience and service was very friendly and comfortable. We could have closed our eyes and felt like we were back in Paris. I also will recommend Marche du Sud which has a small patio, can be booked for private parties, and has interesting dishes from Lyon, France. Yummy!

This is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. The food is always good. Best, best, BEST hamburger. Enjoy a bucket of mussels with wine or Sangria. Their chicken is always succulent. Pastas and rissoto's excellent. Their fish is always well prepared. For lunch? We love the onion soup. The vegetable pannini. Just really good food, nice ambience. Their nutella crepe dessert is sooo good, but it is hard not to have the flourless chocolate cake.... Really good bar and wine selection. The owner, John, makes everyone feel welcome and the staff is great. Lucky for us, we live so close because if we didn't - well, we'd just have to move in!

This was my first time there. Although it was steamy weather, all the doors and windows were open allowing the hot air to make the interior uncomfortable. On top of that workers were using a jack hammer directly outside the front door. I had to ask the waitress to please close the doors and turn on the air conditioning. Prices were reasonable for New York but I wouldn't return.

We picked this place because it was near an event we were attending. What a nice surprise. The choices for food were excellent and the wait staff was friendly and helpful. The AC was just right, no icy drafts. Prices are reasonable. Altogether a pleasing experience which I would be happy to repeat.

Stopped in here for lunch. Plenty of space inside, and weather was nice outside so most people were sitting there. Staff was very friendly to the kid my friends brought along. Slowed after the initial order, but consistent and friendly. They served us quickly with bread, olive oil on the table, and balsamic when we asked. The chicken & pesto sandwich was so-so, nothing exciting there, Cosi's better. The fries, though, were good, seasoned just enough to be tasty on everyone's plate. The Smoked Salmon Florentine was just perfectly made eggs with a heap of sauce, a salad and onion-grilled potatoes to the side. Side of bacon was normal, nothing special here. Eating here leisurely seemed to be the key.

We were in NYC for a short visit and planned to go to a different place but it was pouring and Bistro 61 was only a block away. This worked out very well for us. We split mussels and a burger. The mussels were great and there were plenty for 2( we ordered the large order). The burger was the best ground beef I have ever had. We will return when we are in area.

We enjoyed the cozy neighborhood feel of the restaurant. The escargots for the appetizer were average, and it took nearly 35 minutes for them to arrive. Not worth the wait! However, our entrees of veal scallopine and steak frites were quite good, as was the dessert crepe. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass. We would go back again.

Most of the food ordered was good , tasty , with ingredients of quality. My only objection was that the Sauce with the rouille for the Moules Marseillaise was deep in the bottom of the pot. Perhaps the mussels should have been served in a wider opened dish ? The mussels on top were dry and the sauce had not penetrated to impart its delicious taste. I like the toast served with the mussels but found the "frites" not up to par. The white sauce for the salmon could have been a bit more "releve", less bland. Two of the waiters were friendly, smiling and pleasant. I was very impressed that the bar tender would leave from behind the bar to go out and greet diners coming into the restaurant: a nice gesture.

I thought the food was quite good --the ambience was lacking and the venue was not attractive. I would not rush back. The service was attentive, but I thought it would be more of a French crew rather than a Mexican one--while Olga was lovely --The place needed a little polishing.

This was my third trip to Bistro 61, and like the other two, I came on a quite night for dinner with a group of friends. We were warmly greeted by our waitress, Michelle. Our group tried a variety of items on the menu, and we enjoyed them all. Highlights included, the Steak Tartare, Lamb burger, Chocolate Fondue, Escargot, and a chicken tagine dish that I can't remember the name of. Service was excellent, and we enjoyed a great meal, at a leisurely pass (our choice). The menu is a mix of classic French/Belgian bistro items with some other choices thrown in. I intend to return often in 2014!

I am a regular here, whether dining in or ordering in so I am partial to this little bistro. I decided to go for New Year's because they were NOT doing a prix fixe menu but were offering a la carte holiday specials. It was an excellent decision! Restaurant was full when we entered at 9 but service did not suffer. Food was delicious. Duck confit with wild mushrooms in a puff pastry was melt in your mouth, artichoke salad with green and shaved grana Padana was delicious, baby lamb shank in red wine reduction with gnocchi was rustic and comforting on a cold evening. Ended with delicious flaming crepes Suzette. This was a perfect choice for dinner, no forced New Year's hoopla, great food, good energy, reasonable prices. Neighborhood gem.

I met an old friend for a Thursday "brunch". Bistro 61 accommodated an 11:15 reservation. Although 2/3 of the brunch party were late, the staff were very friendly and relaxed. Once all were assembled, we ordered the omelets with chèvre and roasted red bell pepper. They were delicious: moist, warm, flavorful, balanced flavors. All in all, it was a simple, un-rushed meal. I am looking forward to returning and trying their dinner entrees.

I had my first dinner at Bistro 61 last night and I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was outstanding, I probably over ordered as so many menu items looked too good to pass up. It was a slow night, so the place was very quiet. The ambiance is about average for a bistro and I docked them a star on service because no one came to refill my water glass. The waitress was very good and explained all the dishes on the menu. I am looking forward to returning and trying out some other items on their menu.
