Diner Reviews
  • "We only come here about once a year because we don't live in Medford anymore :-( This year's visit was terrific as always. Great service and a delicious meal."

  • "Have heard about this restaurant from foodie neighbors for a long time and have wanted to try it. We invited friends from Arlington who had never been either. Service was great, esp our primary waitress who was attentive yet funny. The appetizer and salad portions of the meal were great--the homemade ricotta is yummy. The main course, however, not so much. My veal was over coated and overlooked. There was simply too much breaking, no meat flavor. The duck was nicely prepared. Seems the scallops were liked, but the portion very small for the price. Overall, better than "ok" but hard to imagine it becoming a go-to dinner option."

  • "Love the food and everything about the restaurant. Must try the calamari!"

  • "Who knew a hip and trendy bistro would be in West Medford?! I first saw this restaurant while on the Commuter Rail as it's right across from the West Medford Commuter Rail station. Always looking for a new place to try, I gave it a go. The server, Antonio, was top notch. Friendly and polite, his recommendations were very much appreciated and not "pushy". He saw to our needs well. The food was wonderful and they are very accommodating on menu item preparations. If I had any one complaint it would be the location is very tough to park. There are public spots but it is a very busy area and hard to find on a Friday night. All of the side streets require resident permits since it is near the T stop."

  • "A high-school girlfriend and I get together once or twice a year for dinner and we love coming to Bistro 5. One is from Belmont and the other from Malden, so a nice in-between location. We do sit and chat for a while, both before and after we eat, and the wait staff never rushes us. Great food, interesting menu, great service, good drinks, an all around Gem! We will continue to dine with you!!"

  • "never dissappointed. food and service is fabulous."

  • "The wine list offered good choices at reasonable (for restaurants) prices. We really liked the service. The food was good."

  • "Always excellent, interestingly prepared food. A neighborhood gem, we go there whenever we want the kind of gourmet food we don't prepare at home, excellent service, good ambiance, and not Boston prices."

  • "A coworker recommended this place that I would not have given a second glance. And it is divine. You can tell the chef really enjoys his work to bring out the best flavor in whatever he puts together. The rabbit, the duck fois gras brulee and the calamari were stand-outs. We learned early that you need to get a piece of every element on your fork to truly appreciate the dish. Calamari + tomato + chili pepper and rabbit + radicchio + fennel root were some of the tastiest things I've ever had. Left a star open for improvement because the veal parm and desserts were a little more pedestrian. But it is a great great place."

  • "I was there with a friend celebrating our birthdays and took advantage of the Dine Out Boston price fix meals. The food was even better than I remembered, the bread was incredible, and the paired wines outstanding. But the angel food cake was watery and tasteless except for the pear, and the biscotti were not very special. And they only came out with a candle for one of us. The service was outstanding."

  • "Disappointed in the Gnocchi. It was a little chewy and dry. This place is usually spot on and has the best Calamari anywhere!"

  • "Unless you had heard of this restaurant you would not think to stop and venture in. On the edges of the railroad crossing across from dunkin donuts is Bistro 5. It was busy on a Tuesday night so others know the secret. The service was great and the food very good. They were offering a 3 course meal for $38 and healthy portions. I will definitely go back."

  • "We went for Dine Out Boston week and weren't sure what to expect. But we had a delightful meal and were especially pleased with the wine pairings. Also, excellent service with all courses well paced. We plan to return."

  • "Overall the restaurant was perfect Except for the noise level, as you didn't have a rating above for queit to earth shattering. The food was amazing and the server, I will be back ASAP!! the noise however was very loud so we will be back for a mid week dinner."

  • "I was "nervous" stepping into Bistro 5 recently as I was unaware that extensive renovations had taken place since our last visit. One of the things I loved most about the restaurant prior was it's unique and magical ambiance. That being said, I had ZERO reason to worry. Both the service and the food were just as outstanding as ever. And the new space is lovely - much more open than it's former self. Modern and airy with warm touches. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "This was my second visit to Bistro 5. Both times I was happy with the food. I have tried 3 different appetizers and 2 main courses and all were very good. I would recommend this restaurant. They sent me a birthday coupon via email for $25 off a bill of $50 or more which was a nice, unexpected surprise."

  • "The white anchovies and fennel-orange salad was a good opener, but very light and we didn't get much of a fennel taste. The semilina coated fried calimari were delicious - tender, just spicy enough and not oily. The tagliatelle with braised rabbit ragu was fabulous - toothy pasta, and generous with the meat. Suggested wine pairings were delightful. Service was wonderful, too, showing knowledge of the dishes and the wine, and friendly attention to us without overdoing it."

  • "Four friends out for a birthday dinner. Overall the dinner was a good time. Service was friendly, drinks came quickly, The calamari app. was very small the greens salad was much better to get. Our main dishes were good but a grilled steak we had was very overdone and fatty."

  • "We are very picky and we have an European taste so we have to go to the city to satisfy our needs. Luckily we discovered Bistro 5 in Medford, MA . Food is of very good quality and service is outstanding. Interior is tastefully decorated so dinning there is overall pleasant and relaxing event. Instead of driving to Cambridge or Boston and struggling with parking we often go to Medford."

  • "My wife and I both entertain frequently as part of our jobs, so eating in an upscale restaurant or trendy bistro has become almost routine. Yet whenever we go to Bistro 5, it becomes a meal that we talk about for days after. They always manage to present a menu that makes me feel like I could close my eyes and be happy with any random pick (in fact, the tasting menu lets us do just that -- "bring us whatever the chef recommends.") The ingredients are fresh, generally local and full of flavor. The individual dishes pop with character, whether a mild celery soup or zesty duck prosciutto, the sense is always, "this is how it should taste.""

  • "we enjoyed a special occasion dinner recently at Bistro 5. Requested a quiet table, and got a perfect corner spot, which recalled a bit the corner banquette and similar spaces in the old space that we miss, somewhat nostalgically. food great as always with innovative twists. the trio of chocolates dessert was top-notch. we could easily have ordered more of that, but were quite full and content after delicious small plates to share (arancini strongly recommended), celery root soup, and entrees. Salmon with braised endive just perfectly done."

  • "We have dined at Bistro 5 many times and feel lucky to have such a high end restaurant in the burbs. Our latest trip was disappointing though. Salmon was boring with odd-flavored couscous, wild boar tagliatelle was strangely tasteless, beet salad was a hodgepodge of different flavors that did not go together (deep fried goat cheese and truffles), and only the cannelloni special was delicious. We went on a very busy Saturday night which may have been the problem. We may wait a while before going back. Not the Bistro 5 we are used to which has always before been superb!"

  • "This restaurant is getting better and better with the years. My only gripe is that as the price goes up the portions get smaller."

  • "I made a reservation for 2 at Bistro 5 with Open Table. Throughout the day of my business meetings, i needed to call the restaurant NUMEROUS times to change our head count...from 2 to 4 then to 6 and eventually 5. They were amazingly accommodating. When we finally arrived at our table, the service was perfect. We had cocktails....all delicious, and wine by the glass. The waiter was extremely helpful in wine recommendations. Everyone was delighted with the appetizers....calamari, fusion-sushi, olives and flan. The menu featured lots of truffles....a favorite of ours. Our main plates were just as yummy....duck confit, sea scalops, veal and salmon. All delicious. Dessert proved to be no exception....a trio of chocolate and creme brule!"

  • "The food was excellent, but the restaurant was very crowded. It seemed like extra tables were added in crowded areas. The service was good but too fast. We have been there before when everything was excellent and so were a bit disappointed this time."

  • "My fiancée picked Bistro 5 for us on a random Friday night. I'll admit it: I raised an eyebrow when I looked at their menu. I wondered if they forgot they were in Medford and not in the South End. I was completely wrong, though - the food was amazing, the service was fantastic, and the ambiance was just what we were looking for - quiet enough to have an actual conversation, but not so quiet that you knew the couple at the table next you could hear every word. Great place for a couple or a small group."

  • "Visited the restaurant aftering spotting it on recent Open Table search, was interested in finding something outside of boston. Nice room and interesting menu. Nice selection of drinks. We shared the duck bacon and fro gras and fried oysters, both were nice, entrees were good as well. the seared scallops won the night, my dish was just ok, due to the Spaghetti alla Chitarra being way too salty. Share a dessert and espresso - all in all would definately re-visit. Also looks like nice bar setup and could be fun for drinks and apps."

  • "Nice restaurant, good food, overpriced. Went with my girlfriend on valentines, naturally a bad time to try a new restaurant. In any event, we were restricted to a price fix menu - between my girlfriend and I, dinner came out to $240 before tip (which included 2 glasses of house wine each) - so near $300 with tip. Not worth it. The food was good, but not that good."

  • "We had dinner on Valentine's Day - 3-course meal with an extra complimentary appetizer and sparkling wine. The food was great; dessert was a sampler of three for each of us, no need to share. We have been to the restaurant a number of times and have nothing but good things to say about the food and the service."

  • "What a great find for us. This is a local restaurant with a big city menu, wine list, and service. The higher end wines are really nice. I absolutely love the chicken dish, scallops, and pasta. What is terrific is that they aim to please and will do whatever they can to adjust the menu to a person's taste and whim."

  • "We thought we would give Bistro 5 a try since we had heard mixed reviews and wanted to try for ourselves. We had a reservation for 7:00 and were shown right in. Immediately I liked the ambiance. I ordered a pear martini while I looked over the menu. This was my first disappointment. The martini had no pear flavor. We ordered the calamari which was cooked nicely but hugely under seasoned. My scallops were delicious and my husband's gnocchi was good but not awesome. The bottom line is it was good but not great. I expected much more for the prices charged."

  • "We heard that Bistro 5 was a great place to grab dinner as its a chef-owned restaurant. We we greeted by the friendly hostess and seated almost immediately at a terrific table. The wait-staff is well trained and provided just the right amount of service. The wine list was good but there were problems with having the vintage year that was listed on the menu and it took three tries before we got the wine/vintage that we ordered. We would suggest that the wine list be updated more frequently. The food was very good, flavorful with good portions. Our salads were just-picked fresh and the entrees (Veal and Chicken) were quite flavorful. Bistro 5 is a now on our list of places to re-visit."

  • "Bistro 5 has a very refreshing & flexible attitude with the menu. The Regular Menu is filled with delicious, interesting, & seasonal choices, but it is the Chef's Tasting Menu where they truly shine. You can order it as a 3 or 5 course, with or without wine. But where the Tasting Menu truly shines is the ability to substitute other items from the Regular Menu into your tasting - it allows you to sub in a dish that you really want or maybe don't want. In addition, on the Regular Menu you can get half portions or share plates without any frowning. And to top it off, the food is excellent. Oh did I mention the very good service. I would recommend this without hesitation and would certainly go back."
