A word from Abel Brown
Abel Brown opened its doors in March of 1999 as an intimate neighborhood eatery serving a menu inspired by the seasons. We strive to serve simple, elegant food, paired with a stellar wine list and professional service. Chef Todd Schafer uses specialty purveyors from all over the nation to get the best quality ingredients, whether it's oysters from Seattle, foie gras from the Hudson Valley or fresh seafood flown in from the M.F. Foley Fish Co. in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Our goal is to treat all of our patrons as we would guests in our home.

  • A pleasant surprise

We had no expectations since we were visiting from out of state but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves with a wonderful meal. Hard to believe that a place that looks quite ordinary from the outside is so extraordinary on the inside. Next time we're in the area, we'll be back.

We had gotten a daily deal where we got two free glasses of wine and paid $25 for $50 towards the bill. If if hadn't been for that, we probably would not have gone. The food was good, but my husband got the pheasant, a special, and it was difficult to eat as it was on the bone. My meal was great, but small. We got lavender ice cream for dessert and it was one scoop with some berries. The food was good, but this is an expensive restaurant and not worth the money. We love to eat at restaurants that are a bit more pricey (like Frog Hollow) and don't mind spending money for good food, but we probably won't go back here.

The food was absolutely wonderful! The portions are smaller than what you would find at most restaurants but I think that's a plus because the amount of food you get elsewhere is excessive. I was able to eat everything: appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert, without feeling disgustingly full. The service was very friendly and attentive as well. It was all worth the price, and I can't wait to go back!

We are regular diners at Bistro 491 and the food generally never disappoints in this town where fine dining is scarce. The wine list is good and the cocktails are made properly.

The food was excellent but we thought the atmosphere was a bit sterile and cold relative to other fine dining establishments that we enjoy. Although the service was very good, it can be a bit slow at lunch if you come with a large group--but the food is generally quite good.

    Dined on 2/13/2010
We went on Valentine's Day, so I was a little worried when we walked in to a "standing room only" situation. Not to worry, becasue we had to wait no more than 15 minutes before we were seated. The other patrons who arrived before us, but did not have reservations, were still waiting on a table. When our food was delayed getting to the table (we had not noticed), the restaurant offered us each a free dessert. Very friendly staff who treat you like a welcomed guest. That's the feeling we got.

Had a great experience, and though our food was very much delayed, the restaurant paid for our desserts and dessert wines, and we weren't in much of a hurry anyway. Staff was super friendly, food was a fusion of French and Southern cuisine. Spent some time finding a good place to eat in Augusta, and would highly recommend this one.

Also, our server was attentive while maintaining our privacy and intimacy. Overall, Bistro is the best restaurant in Augusta without question; we will return!!

We ordered a few glasses of various wines, the artisan cheeses for our first course were phenomenal and we ordered the "Off The Hook" Swordfish of the day and "Crispy Chicken Under A Brick" and thoroughly enjoyed it all! This is my favorite Augusta restaurant. It is a great place to take out of town visitors who are considering relocating here - so I guess it could be considered a recruiting resource! I like the fact that the first time my husband and I came, we showed up around 9:00 on a Friday night in sweat shirts and jeans, and were made to feel as welcome as I do now when my dress code is more upscale. Kudos!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

I had requested the back dining room which we did have. There were two other couples there when we arrived and everything was lovely. Soon, the other couples left and before we finished our meal a party of four was seated in the room. These people were loud and obnoxious and completely ruined our evening. My husband and the wife of the other couple with us, not wanting to cause a scene, had to leave the table and wait outside while the other husband and I waited for the bill and paid. I mentioned this to the waitress and she just smiled and carried on with her duties. We all do so enjoy the food, wine and fellowship at Bistro 491. I'm sure this was an isolated incident but at the prices we pay for fine dining, it is very disheartening

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 4/18/2008
A fusion that tried too hard to be creative. Basic tastes were overwhelmed with combinations that were far too rich and not satisfying. As an example, the wonderfully succulent spare ribs were overpowered with too much marinade, which caramelized into a far too sweet infusion. My pork chop was tasty, but the complement of blue cheese macaroni was too pungent against the good selection of meat. The garlic mashed potatoes which were brought as a substitute were cold and weak. The wine selection was small, but interesting, although the Oregon Pinot Grigio couldn't stand up to my menu selection (or any of the offerings). Not bad but needs work. Service was attentive and accommodating.

The food was very good, the service staff was young and a bit inexperienced. I ordered a salad, appetizer, and an entree of scallops. The scallop entree I was served was actually the appetizer dish, not the entree. I did not ask to have it sent back. As I noticed other servers, there seemed to be a bit of a lack of expertise with the staff. All seemed to be very attentive, friendly, and quick, as was mine. My experience was enjoyable and the food was very good, particularly the endive salad. My only wish for a restaurant of this caliber, along with others like it, that the food and service match. If you have a strong experienced kitchen staff, then your floor staff needs to be equally as strong.
