A word from Bistro 29
Bistro 29 located in downtown Santa Rosa, Sonoma County. Bistro 29 is a traditional bistro specializing in “Breton” regional cuisine. The number 29 comes from the department of Finistère (end of the earth) located in the upper tip of north-west France. Known for the Galette de blé noir (traditional buckwheat crêpe) and sweet crêpes, Bretagne also uses a variety of local seafood and produce that can easily be found in and around northern California.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Started with a delicious Jardesca California Aperitiva and then an outstanding prix fixe meal with wine pairing. Absolutely delicious. Chef Brian is wonderful and Bistro 29 is a gem...."

  • "I love food. I love good food. Bistro 29 is THE place to go to in Santa Rosa for good food. I often have the lettuce as a starter. It comes with a fromage blanc vinaigrette to die for. Last night, I had the sauteed sole as a main dish. I really relished its parsnip purée. I wasn't hungry anymore, but I didn't want to stop here. All the desserts look appetizing on the menu. As I couldn't make my choice, I picked the gourmand, a selection a several bit size desserts. It was exquisite. The staff is really attentive, and they have a $29 prix fixe that's unbeatable. I really recommend Bistro 29 next time you want to have top quality meal - or a romantic dinner - in a nice atmosphere."

  • "The scallops were to die for--sweet, soft, buttery. I noticed that many diners were enjoying the traditional French dish,Steak Frites. I always enjoy that when I'm in France but this time I went with the scallops and I'm glad I did. We really enjoyed our meal and the ability to talk without fighting restaurant noise."

  • "Great restaurant with superb food and wine - amazing experience for all and especially those who relish perfectly matched foods."

  • "My wife and I visited again the other evening and had a terrific experience (again). Food was great and service was impeccable. Mussels (moules) for an appetizer, this time with the Pernod Crème sauce (quite popular and highly recommended) accompanied by a glass of Sparkling, followed by Lola Rosa salad (wonderful collection of textures and flavors - just right) and for the main course Daube of Beef (boeuf) with potato-St Jorge cheese croquettes - the beef was succulent, tender and powerfully flavorful with a red wine reduction, the potato-cheese croquettes were rich and creamy and great with a bottle of Vaqueyras. All-in-all another terrific experience; no room for dessert this time (maybe next time - we will be back)."

  • "Every time we need to celebrate (or just acknowledge something important), we discuss all of the wonderful restaurants we could go to. More often than not, though, we come back to Bistro 29. Wonderful food, and the cozy ambiance and great service, make it too hard to resist."

  • "Highly recommend this restaurant! Happy hour appetizers were fantastic and dinner was delicious!"

  • "This was the first time we dined at Bistro 29 and we were definitely not disappointed. I had the special three course menu with wine parings that are offered weekly. It was a wonderful value. My duck confit was quite good as was the salad with goat cheese and the dessert. My husband had the daube of beef and was quite happy with it also. The staff was friendly and professional although we would have been happy with a little more time between courses. The atmosphere is bistro casual--relaxing and comfortable. We will definitely return."

  • "Bistro 29 is hands-down THE BEST value for quality food in Sonoma County."

  • "Duck Confit is one of the many wonderful dishes that is offered from time to time as the weekly Prix Fixe. The most recent Duck Confit Prix Fixe included luscious French lentils with a toasted goat cheese arugula salad.as a first course."

  • "Great welcoming atmosphere. The steak frites was very upscale and the wines by the glass were generous and well thought out. Dessert was also a high point. Very convenient location near the back entrance to Russian River Brewing just down the street!"

  • "We had our anniversary dinner here. They gave us a special table for 2 at a corner where you can talk. Everything was terrific as noted above. From the food to the service. It is one of our favorite restaurants in Sonoma County."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The choices for restaurant week were great for anyone's palette and provided by far the best value of any restaurant included in the Sonoma Restaurant Week. We had the Snapper Pistou which essentially is a minestrone with pesto that you mix all together with the fish and make a "stew" of your own out of it. It was absolutely spectacular."

  • "...but just OK. There was nothing that I thought was memorable. The wine pairings were fine, but the food was ordinary. The service was the same. Not bad, but lackluster. We had to ask when our dessert would arrive. This was our fourth visit to the restaurant, and it has been like this each time. I don't think we'll be back."

  • "Our dinning experience was extremely good. On a Friday evening the restaurant was just about full and the wife and I were easily able to enjoy a romantic evening together. The food was amazing, we both enjoyed every single bite thoroughly! The presentation was fabulous! We will definitely return and recommend this place to our friends. Mr. Anderson has got a great thing going here!"

  • "Yes, there were all the French sauces but more importantly to us great blends of vegetable ingredients like parsnips, ginger and lemon in a soup. And I do not remember seeing breast of lamb on a restaurant menu. We also found the smallish size of the restaurant with its miniscule bar attractive."

  • "We went there for the Sonoma restaurant week and were not disappointed. One of us had the Prix Fixe special ($29 with choices on each of 3 courses for this week), and one ate off the main menu. The seafood cassoulet was delicious and the portions were perfect. On the Prix Fixe we had salad, red snapper and a dessert, all of which were great. We'd go back any time, not just for restaurant week, as they do their Prix Fixe (without choices) during the week days."

  • "This place was nice and food was good. Not sure id go back but worth trying."

  • "When we walked in, the restaurant smelled strongly like fish. It got better as the evening went on. The soup was great but the red snapper was bland. It was loud and hard to have a conversation."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "We went to dine during restaurant week, and enjoyed the 3 course prix fixe for $29 with an $11 wine pairing. The service was quite good, and the waitstaff and chef went above and beyond to concoct a gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free version of one of the meals for my sweetie. The food was tasty, but didn't lead to "yummy noises" of pleasure while we ate. My dessert, an apple tart, had a rather off flavor. I didn't think that claret paired well with lamb, although the chardonnay was lovely with the pear-parsnip soup. I've heard such rave reviews of this place that I probably will try it again."

  • "First the good news. Bistro 29 has an inventive and exciting menu. I'm actually eager to return to give it another chance. However, my first experience was disappointing. The Seafood Cassoulet appetiser sounded good, looked good, but was barely warm when it was served. The server offered to replace it but it was late and we were hungry. The main dish Cassoulet was excellent with falling of the bone duck. I ordered the paperdelle dish with wild mushrooms and fresh peas. It looked beautiful and was cooked perfectly al dente but was so over salted it was almost unedible. Pity. This restaurant has great potential but seems to lack attention to the details."

  • "We frequent Bistro 29 more than any other in Santa Rosa, and are never disappointed. From the atmosphere to the service to the food, everything is great. This time we did the escargot to start, delightful. I had the scallops, which are always done to perfection here. Husband had the lamb, a generous portion and excellent execution. Our server was great, they never rush you and your glass is never empty either. :)"

  • "This restaurant is simply excellent. The meal we had was wonderful. The quality, presentation and service made this an outstanding event for the four of us. The scallops were cooked just right. The braised beef was delicious. You can't have a bad meal here if you tried."

  • "My wife and I and another couple had a great dinner at Bistro 29. The service was outstanding along with the food. This was my third time at Bistro 29 and I have never been disappointed. The menu had a wide selection of excellent choices. My only suggestion would be to add several lower priced wines."

  • "The salid was great and the crepes were the best but three small scallops for the price as an entree was a little much."

  • "The range of offerings her is incredible. It would take three or four nights to try every item that interested us. Starters include crab on rye toast, seafood cassoulet, sweetbreads in puff pastry, escargot, baby gem salad with figs, candied almonds and blue cheese, seared goat cheese crottini with endive, grilled pears and hazelnut and steamed mussels, not to mention both cheese and charcuterie plates. Entrees included black cod, traditional cassoulet, risotto made with farro, lamb shank, steak fritesand sweet potato gnocchi. Everything is presented with an artistic flair, and portions are ample."

  • "Consistently good food, service & overall experience. It's nice to eat somewhere where there's obviously a lot of care that goes into everything. Love this place!"

  • "It was a pleasant dinnig experience for an anniversary. We are very fond of French cooking. It is a small restaurant & reasonably quiet. However, the tables for 2 (most of them are) are set so close together one has to scrunch sideways to get out from the bench seat. This wouldn't keep us from going again, but A BIT more space would enhance the experience & give it an excellent rating.."

  • "We enjoyed a nice dinner here. The onion soup was delicious. My fish was prepared perfectly. My husband liked the cassoulet. Although our waitress was attentive and personable, the hostess was less than welcoming. She looked to dislike her job immensely. She never looked at us when pouring water or clearing dishes. Someone needs to discuss her attitude with the guests. It was an uncomfortable situation. I think the intimate restaurant is very lovely but needs to retrain staff."

  • "Bistro 29 has become a favorite. We love the true French bistro food, service and atmosphere. It is cozy, welcoming, and we can hear each other across the table, even when it is packed. Escargot, crepes, and more - it is always a treat. Service and food have been excellent each and every time we dine there."

  • "The food was delicious and the portions were perfect. We requested a private booth which they didn't really have but they gave us a corner table that approximated a booth which was very comfortable."

  • "We had been to Bistro 29 and loved it but then simply forgot to come back! They have a wonderful Prix fixe menu Tuesday-Thursday at a reasonable price and will do wine pairing for you for as well. Lovely French cuisine with a modern slant. The food has always been delicious, presented beautifully and cooked to perfection (our recent grilled salmon is an example). The wait staff are friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. The noise level is moderate if the bistro is crowded. There is a small bar and the wine list is excellent. It has been a wonderful place to go to alone or with friends."

  • "Brian Anderson, Franciois, Cristina, Zack, John always provide a great experience from beginning to end. I highly recommend this small but bright location anytime of the week or for special occasion. There Bistro $29 menu most Tues-Thurs evenings is an excellent valued menu as well."

  • "A wonderful time with very helpful well trained staff. Sampled several items with the best being the Mussels with Pernod cream sauce and chic-pea frites and the Onion soup made something special with an apple cider laced broth. One small hiccup in our order was more than resolved with A+ service recovery! A very focused wine list complements their tasty French-fare....In our next travel back to wine country we will definitely return again!"
