I have dined at PICA many times over the years and enjoyed the food and experience, therefore returning and recommending it to others. However my last experience there was disappointing. Our waiter appeared to be very sleepy and uninspired, unable to describe menu items in an appetizing manner and lacked polish and professional demeanor. Our entree, lamb shank, was tough and cold as were the vegetables. The dessert, checkered cake, was dry and the icing far too sweet. Another point, our wine was delivered late into the meal and the glass filled inappropriatley low.

The food was to a high standard and the service was okay. It is a school and they're learning to cook not to be servers so when you keep this in mind the service is mind. The only issue we had was at the end when there was some confusion about the service charge as it was added to the pre-discounted rate and not the discounted rate (2for1 deal). This meant everyone in our group paid what they thought to be their share but was however below the bill. We didn't realise until we had handed over cash and cards. The staff were not particularly good at explaining the issue to us and left a sour taste in everyones mouth which was a shame as everyone had previously had a great night.

I'd say the experience was just OK. First, the food was really mediocre. The dessert was inedible. The vegetables on my main course were quite good, but the cornish hen itself was not seasoned properly and was quite tasteless. Also, we were not expecting a hefty service charge added to the bill, which we should have known about ahead of time.

One recognises that this is a training establishment and therefore has to be treated a little differently! As usual, it was overall excellent. My only comments are that the main course was served barely warm, and the lamb shank did not "fall off of the bone" as one expects. My companion diner commented that the ice cream served with her dessert was already melting by the time it arrived. I believe there was one server short; service was certainally rather erratic.

Whenever we visit your beautiful city, we try to obtain reservations with you. The food has always been delicious and beautifully presented. The young people serving, while not always accomplished servers, are unfailingly polite and willing to talk about their interest in food and learning. We have never been disappointed in our experiences with you

There were two diners. I was disappointed with the prawn main course. It was tasteless, which I attribute to farmed prawns. The batter on the deep fried prawns was crisp and not greasy, which is good. The other diner did not think much of the "sachertorte". I will definitely visit again.

  • This is a culinary school.

This is a culinary school. Expect some glitches. Overall, the experience is enjoyable. The server-obviously new, very nervous (even down to the shaking hands) We had to ask for routine things, such as the refilling of glasses. The server rarely stopped by, although he was not busy with other tables. The food was very good. The menu changes often, so recapping our menu choices wouldn’t be helpful. Our only gripe: a full 15% tip was automatically included with the bill. The tip should be merit based. That's how you learn to be better. We would go back. The food was good; the value average. It’s nice to be able to contribute to the learning of the culinary students. We’d recommend it to others visiting Vancouver.

We thought the food was wonderful and the presentation very good-We felt that the wine was nice but quite overpriced and since we went for a two for one at $36 and one glass of wine at $9.50 per glass one ginger ale and no tea or coffee for the bill to somehow get to over $65 was excessive

Exceptional Value for the Quality Cuisine. Maybe because all dishes were prepared by students, the attention to the delicate flavor was carefully put together, which made me appreciate their passion for creating tasty food for customers. Hope all the chefs and restaurant owners in Vancouver go there have a meal, to return where they started their journey... and open their tast-bud once more. I will definately go there again!

Three diners were very satisfied with the usually excellent food and presentation. Unfortunately the fourth was disappointed with her Salade Nicoise, and then even more so with the so called "Bouillabase" which comprised a few scraps of seafood in what tasted like vegetable broth; a far cty from the genuine article.

Lunch at PICA has become a post exam treat for my daughter and I. We experience wonderfully prepared and presented food. It means a lot to us, to be able to support the school. Thank you to all who work hard to give us such a lovely experience. My only concern was that the noise level was higher than I remember it in the past. There also was a loud hum in the background that was annoying. The food was a wonderful distraction from the noise!

I was very happy to eat there on Jan 26 that food was very good. I tried with my friend on Jan 21st and I was pretty disappointed. Food was terrible that we left a lot of food. Both time service was uncomfortable that I don't want to leave 15% tip. 5 to 10% tip. But I understand that they are students so.

Love the genuine feel of the place. Servers are young and a little scared but sweet and show great effort. The food was flavorful and and well presented. I loved my roasted egg plant with Boccincini (sp), fresh and flavorful. The manager is gracious and busy in an effort to keep the students professional edge up. Ask questions learn about their program it allows them to shine and you get more out of the meal.

I have been to this restaurant for both lunch & dinner several times. Typically, the restaurant has been packed to capacity but this time it was only half full. The service was friendly & both waiters were obliging & pleasant, however, service was slower than usual (despite the lower numbers) & the food was good but not excellent as it had been in the past. There were only 2 deserts (usually at least 3). While we enjoyed it, I felt the quality & choice of dishes was lower than we had experienced on previous visits.

Food is bad, service is amateurish. But it's training ground for students, so we can't ask for much. For the amount of money spent, you are better off going to a proper joint. But if your heart warms at the thought of contributing to the education of young people, maybe you will ignore the bad food.

In this restaurant students are the protagonizing stars. Everyone is friendly and always smiling, they please you in everyway they can. Food is great, fabulous presentation, a burst of flavors and dessert is awsome. Needs more lightning outside too dark during night time and it gives the impression it is closed. This restaurant has great potential, although it is used for students to practice, the food is GREAT and it's presentation on the plate looks like a painting, really nice.

Staff was very courteous, we rec'd what we asked for quiet table away from crowd, unfortunately the party that was there was very VERY LOUD... would have been nice had they toned down their voices. Staff even did something special and surprised us with a plate of chocolate (dark and reg) truffles, and wrote Happy Anniversary in chocolate on the plate, very special for our celebration... We would definitely suggest to all for at least a visit... we were too busy and rushed the next day to return to the bake shop to try their bake goods!! Well we just have to return again... Opened late. Kept waiting outside the restaurant without seating. Appetizer bar was very good quality but had not been completely set by the time I went up. Something as rudimentary as bread was not placed out until I finished my appetizers. Most dishes were not labeled on the appetizer buffet. Main course was fair at best. 2 of five components were completely lacking. One aspect of the fish course literally resisting cutting it was so overdone and rubbery. The risotto was undercooked (starchy/gummy)and woefully underseasoned, there wasn't a hint of the mushroom flavour promised on the menu. Inattentive staff never once asked how my meal was and didn't inquire even upon seeing significant portions left on my plate. Value for $ = very poor!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 7/18/2008
"Seafood buffet" was misleading. "Seafood night with appetizer/desserts served buffet style" would be more appropriate. The halibut in the main course was encased in a thick greasy batter - I've had better on the beach. Sauteed would be more appropriate for this style of dining. The beef was good. The vegetable dishes on the appetizer buffet were delicious, but leave the prawns out of at least some of them - some people, my companion included, are violently allergic to shellfish, so missed out on some of the better dishes.
