Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful dinner last evening at Bistango. All of our dishes were superb. Most of all we enjoyed the service of Kassia, who was very helpful with our food selection."

  • "The pasta was so light and fresh it didn't taste like it was gluten free at all."

  • "The atmosphere was very professional in general. The staff were attentive, the customers were well-behaved, meaning not rowdy, ages ranging from 30-60s...Quiet - so you can actually catch up with your friends, and hear each other. Food was good - gluten free pasta was just a little bit chewy, but actually tasted really good. I found the food on the salty side, but my friends were okay. Good food, good ambience, but not a place where you'd expect to go if you're looking for a loud bar scene, very young crowd."

  • "I am on a guten free diet and was so pleased with the menu selection. Deliciously prepared entrees, one would not even know that the pasta was gluten free! Very creative and delicately prepared entrees. Service is excellent. Can't wait to dine there again."

  • "I love that I can have a good italian dinner with my husband and both of us be able to enjoy it! I have celiac disease but he does not. The food is awesome- from the flat breads to the pasta- you'd never know it was gluten free."

  • "Every dish was excellent. Flatbread, salad and pastas. All delicious and gluten free. It was a great neighborhood place and very busy."

  • "We had an unusual experience. Five of us were seated and found the restaurant very warm. We were told the fan was broken in the kitchen and the air conditioning couldn't cool the heat from the kitchen. They said they were working on it, so we ordered drinks and finally, dinner. About 15 minutes later the waiter told us that due to the intense heat, the kitchen had to close and regretfully, we would have to leave. We were stunned and as we started to process everything, another waiter ran over to say that they had fixed whatever was wrong and we could stay. The place eventually cooled down and the dinner service proceeded uneventfully. The food was as delicious as it has always been, but the restaurant never even offered dessert!!"

  • "Originally I chose Bistango because it serbes gluten free food, but I would return because the food was so fantastic. In fact, had I not known it was gluten free I never would have guessed; and I had tortellini! Everything was delicious, the service was attentive but not intrusive and the casual decor was perfect for lunch. and the bread was crunchy and delicious. I would definitely recommend Bistango if you are looking for a place to bring non-gluten free and gluten-free friends."

  • "I had a birthday dinner for 8 people last week. I'm constantly disappointed by popular NYC restaurants, but Bistango could not have been better. The food was terrific. The service was impeccable. Everyone had a great attitude."

  • "Bistango - Uptown is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. So far I have been there 3 times and enjoyed it each time. It has become part of my rotation of local restaurants. Bonus points for the most reasonable corkage policy in the area."

  • "All of the charm of the downtown one is missing. The menu is limited, the food bad and overpriced, you couldn't hear anyone without screaming. The interior is charmless; the sidewalk where the outdoor tables are smells. Didn't have that problem when previous restaurant was there. The service people were lovely, if not always 100% on top of their game. I won't go back."

  • "We were given GF bread with amazing olive oil and garlic (and for a GF person, this is hard to come by in restaurants). We started with calamari and we each ordered our own GF pasta dish. We had amazing wine and our server was very nice and attentive. Overall, amazing dinner and we will definitely come again and save room for desert as they sounded amazing."

  • "We were so disappointed by the food at the Uptown Bistango. We have been downtown and loved it. The hangar steak was tough and flavorless. The mushroom ravioli was average. It may be that the kinks need to be worked out but please hurry!! On a positive note, the wines by the glass were terrific."

  • "Normally we love Bistango's....we found that the menu was very limited and not a lot of choices like the other location. And very expensive with smaller portions than the other location. Not sure we will be back to the uptown restaurant so fast. smaller portions, pricier and not a lot of choices on the menu... service was good though"

  • "The artichoke appetizer was bursting with flavor, the salads were fresh and interesting and the pasta was delicious. Our server was pleasant and knowledgable and the restaurant overall was quite nice."

  • "I really wanted to like this little neighborhood gem but ... The service was very nice and the vibe was good but the good was merely average. Nice wine and good dessert but our entrees ( party of 5) were mediocre."

  • "Impressed with menu choices, especially variety of pasta dishes. Ambiance was pleasant, but results were uneven. My dish was dry, and that's easily the case w/ gluten-free pasta, but it should be compensated for with a lighter sauce. Also, the piselli pasta only had a few wisps of artichoke leaves (one assumes something more substantial when artichokes hearts are a main ingredient), also the peas were hard. However, my friend had Sugo pasta (tagliatelle, braised short-rib, red wine) and that really went the distance--it was rich without being overwhelming and not at all dry, perhaps because the sauce was more substantial. Deserts were less then memorable. I think one waiter asking me how my meal is is fine, more than that is too much."

  • "Great addition to the UES. Love Bistango and gluten free menu."

  • "Great food for those with allergies. First question from our server was: do you have any allergies that's we should know about?"

  • "I have been a huge fan of the Murray Hill location for a long time, and am so happy they are expanding! The amazing thing about this new location is that everything is gluten free by default instead of the other way around. All of my non-celiac friends and family love this place too, but it holds a special place in my heart because they make eating out a wonderful experience for anyone with food allergies. And just like downtown, the staff on the UES is incredible. I don't live close to either Bistango, but they are well worth the trip."

  • "This new addition to the UES led my granddaughter to break into a huge grin. She felt so "normal" here where all offerings are gluten free. If you want non-gluten free, it's extra. That's a paradigm switch. Suggest attention to seasonings where salt is very heavy handed. Try the lasagna and the pappardelle with braised short ribs.Wine list reasonable and well chosen. Desserts excellent as well. "

  • "Finally! A beautiful restaurant with all GF pastas that doesn't sacrifice style or taste. The ambience was lovely. The host treated us kindly, making a specific point of connecting with my kids and asking us how our day was. Our waiter started by asking about food allergies (I have sensitivities to both gluten and garlic), so it was a nice touch to be given GF bread and olive oil without garlic when the rest of the table got their bread. I can't tell you how torturous it is to watch everyone eat bread when you can't have any! It's those little considerations that won my heart. The only reason I gave food 4 stars instead of 5 is because my pasta dish was slightly over-salted (the Asparagi), and my son's plain spaghetti was too al dente."

  • "After going to the downtown Bistango for my wife's birthday earlier this year, we knew that we would have to check out this new branch on the Upper East Side. Our burrata and calamari appetizers were amazing (the calamari comes in a sauce with a bit of a kick, so be aware), as were our mushroom ravioli and spicy cavatelli entrees. The gamechangers were our red velvet cake and tiramisu desserts, each with an expertly paired scoop of gelato. Get here before everyone else figures out how great it is!"

  • "I think the UES needed a fresh face in terms of Italian food, even if its in the form of an expansion of an existing downtown restaurant. I have been here twice so far and have really enjoyed it. I'll be back. Not that it matters to me, but the Gluten free items help make it more appealing. What does matter to me, is the reasonable corkage policy."

  • "I am GF and my husband is not, but he said he would love to return! GF Italian is really hard to come by, but Bistango gets my mouth watering every time! Flatbread was great, especially for being gluten free! Artichokes were outstanding--save some bread for them. The tortellini was everything I hoped it would be: Plump little dumplings of dough and cheese, perfectly cooked and sauced in light saffron cream. I ate very slowly in this course just to savor it. Finally, we had the carrot cake and cheesecake, and both were very good-- but the carrot cake is a standout. As it was our anniversary, the manager brought us two glasses of champagne with well-wishes. Cannot wait to return, couldn't have been more perfect! "

  • "Had a celebratory dinner for our son who graduated from Columbia earlier in the day. Unassuming outside but lovely inside. Our server, sorry I can't remember her name but wonderful young lady from Poland was fun, accommodating and conscientious. The food while not too pricey was delicious. Everything from the bread to our entrees to dessert and the special touch of a glass of port were well-prepared and presented."

  • "I have been so excited for Bistango to open ever since the sign went up in the new location months and months ago. However, we dined there on Saturday night and it was not the great experience I had been hoping for. The table was set in front of us and our bread plates were dirty. It took about 15 minutes for just water although our waitress was very pleasant. We were never offered bread so I'm not sure why we even had (dirty) plates. The grilled vegetable appetizer was drenched in oil and consisted of about 4 slices of zucchini and a few tiny carrots. I ordered a Mezze plate for my entree which consisted of rock hard bread (3 tiny toasts) 4 olives, some cheese and 2 spreads which lacked much flavor. Service was friendly but slow. "

  • "Great food and the staff is so friendly although they were busy that night and it takes a while for them to return to our table to take our order. cons: 1. I asked specifically not to be seated near the cabinet where they keep their utensils and when they brought us to our table, we were right across from said cabinet. I asked to change tables and they were accommodating enough to give us another table. pros: Food is great and cooked well. I would recommend any of the pasta and the crab salad. Simple but delicious. Staff is super friendly and very accommodating."

  • "Some of it good, some of it tasteless. Their gluten free bread tasted..hmmmm, tasteless. The chicken dish for $20 came with collard greens salad. Just realizing the potato part was not on the plate at all. The chicken was bland. The collard green salad good and tasty. In other neighborhood restaurants, portions are bigger and prices are 25% less. My friend ordered one of the specials, a salad with crab. The price was $15 and the portion was miniscule. An entree served on a small salad dish? Gluten free is trendy. There were people waiting to get in. I have a feeling that their salads might be good but I doubt they are substantial enough in size to match their prices. I never use salt but did tonight."

  • "service was SLOW!! under staffed for mother's day. looked like the chef was out talking and not getting the food out! food took awhile ... i think our dessert took longer than our meal to come out! wait staff nice but seemed surprised also how long dessert was taking to come out, was not just our table. if they focused on getting the good out faster the tables would turn around faster! Good but not sure we would return"

  • "This restaurant is amazing and dedicated gluten free environment. The pastas are delicious and made on site, you will enjoy everyone of them. Our party ordered 5 different pasta dishes and they were all amazing. Anthony the owner, is so friendly, helpful and makes sure everyone is taken care of. It's our go to restaurant."

  • ""you cant always get what you want".. I went into the place with an open mind, my girlfriend and I invited another couple to dine with us as we test out a gluten free place for my mother who was coming into town the next week. I am still not convinced on the food but I haven't tried a ton of gluten free spots so I will give it the benefit of the doubt when I say I didn't hate it. The pasta tasted a bit off, to be expected with gluten free but my buddy had the lamb chops (special at the time) and they were delicious. Drinks were ok, nothing to complain about there but the ambiance was WAY to bright. I felt like I was in my high school cafeteria (and it was dark outside). I wouldn't go back as nothing really hooked me but didn't mind the meal"

  • " It's so nice to have a new reasonably priced restaurant nearby that serves good and interesting Italian food. The place looks great and the service is attentive. Best of all the food is very good and they will prepare it just the way you like it. "

  • "...unless otherwise indicated. Visited on the eve of a NYRR race to "carb up" - not only enjoyed the gluten-free cider drink and bread, but also my "casa" salad, "sumo" pasta dish, and red-velvet dessert! Will certainly let others know about this new-to-uptown (UES) restaurant. "
