A word from Bissap and Little Baobab
Bissap Baobab has moved and merged with Little Baobab. Come visit us, only one block from our original location at 3372 19th Street between Mission & Capp, in San Francisco’s Mission District.

We have fused the best elements of Bissap (formerly Bollyhood Café) and Little Baobab to create Bissap Baobab Village. We serve Senegalese food and artisan cocktails using homemade hibiscus, tamarind and ginger juices, flavors that will deliver a truly international experience to your palate. In the late evening, talented musicians and dancers take the stage to entertain, transforming our space into a unique West African experience that you won't want to miss. Dine early or, dine late and stay for the evening. We look forward to giving you a warm Senegalese welcome.

Please note that we only take reservations for groups of eight or more and are happy to accommodate groups as large as 40 people.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food and the music were wonderful. The menu is simple but tasty, and the staff friendly. Our only confusion was when they changed waitresses on us without warning. We plan on making another trip to enjoy them in the future. If you are thirsty try the rum infused coconut milk."

  • "Last time I ate/drank here, about 5 years ago, it was incredible. I was so excited to take some friends there on a recent visit. Not one of us finished our dinners, though we were hungry as can be. The food was pretty abysmal - overcooked shrimp, and dried out potatoes, etc. Happily, the cocktails were still pretty delicious! Even so, I probably won't be going back."

  • "We had a groupon for Bissap which included 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and a pitcher of cocktails. The food was very tasty, and the cocktail we ordered was outstanding. We ordered the rum, with hibiscus, ginger and tamarind juice. It was not sweet, just perfect, the way we like it. The juices are home made. Our excellent server, Ferdinanda, made the pitcher of cocktails exactly to our taste. We'd like to come back here sometime for the live music, drinks and food."

  • "I can't compliment this restaurant enough, my mother said never judge a book by the cover, this is how I would look at Bissap and Little Baobab, service, food, atmosphere all just wonderful. The owner was just wonderful, the food again fantastic!!!!! If you don't visit you will miss a good time!!!"

  • "BUSY -- but attentive staff. Several small rooms -- music/dancing -- and dining. Food tasty - we had a great sampling among the three of us; service excellent. Saw that we wanted to talk and placed us at a table protected from the lively music, dancing and crowd. "

  • "We just stopped here the other night before seeing a show in the Mission. The drinks were delicious, the food was fantastic (who knew Senegalese cuisine was so yummy?), and the location was perfect. And for two people, because of some happy hour deal the price for two was 40 dollars including appetizer, dinner and drinks. Well worth it."

  • "The good qualities of this place are quashed by two factors. Even screaming cannot overcome the ambient noise level, so conversation is impossible while eating. For on-street parking, be prepared to circle for 20 minutes before settling on a spot 6 blocks away. Further, the prix-fixe savings is not nearly 50% as claimed on amazon local - more like 20%."

  • "What a great way to try dishes from Senegal. Everything was tasty and made fresh. Service was spectacular. You are made to feel like you're family. My kids were even invited into the kitchen to see how bananas are flambe'd. We will certainly be back for more. The fresh ginger juice is amazing."

  • "This Senegalese offered some new foods I had never tried. We ordered virtually all of the appetizers and feasted on these. Platanos were wonderful as were the sinful fried mashed potatoes. Loved the hibiscus margarita."

  • "I booked a large party reservation for my sisters birthday party on the night of the Flamenco Dance show! The restaurant staff was very accommodating and helpful; they arranged for us to have a large table up front and a set per person price ($35 pp) which included an entree, an appetizer and a ticket for the performance. The food was EXCELLENT!! The drinks were good too and the server was nice and attentive. The dance performance was FANTASTIC!! Also, the restaurant allowed us to bring in our own birthday cake. After the show the DJ turned it out and we enjoyed the after party!! My sisters birthday was truly memorable because of Bissap! We will definitely be coming back soon! Thanks for the great party!"

  • "I very much appreciated the hostess' efforts to seat us with a view of the music, even though I hadn't known to specify on our reservation. The monthly Saturday night flamenco show is a lot of fun."

  • "I decided to surprise my boyfriend who is from Cameroon, West Africa, to some familiar food! I can truly say that I loved the flavor to the food! The intense flavors and spices were excellent. We awaited the music at 10pm on a saturday night but since we were tired and nothing had started, we decided to call it a night. They also have quite an extensive bar/drinks menu with fresh squeezed juices."

  • "We liked the food and the unique drinks by the pitcher. On the downside, the service was a bit slow which didn't help with the kids getting tired."

  • "Food was good.... very tasty, although the plantains were a little overcooked but that's it. =) Took my team for a dinner there and we had a great time. If you get a chance to pick your table, state you wanna sit in the main room where the live band plays. It's more energetic there overall. Good food, great pitcher of liquor, and awesome surroundings. Fun place."

  • "Food was a lot of fun. Prices a little better than other Mission neighborhood places. But the service, yuck! Given so many great options within just a couple blocks, it will have to be a while before we return."

  • "We had a great family dinner enjoying the delightful African cuisine and colorful ambiance. We had hoped to hear some dynamic music, there was a flute and guitar who were not particularly compelling, but fine."

  • "This was a cute, lively place, with great African Art everywhere. Very busy. My husband and I went at 7PM on a Friday night. Next time, we'll come earlier -- happy hour is from 5:30PM to 7PM. We tried the fancy drinks -- I had the Little Baobob, and Joe had the Tooni. Tooni was a ginger margarita - they make their own ginger juice - we liked it. Their signature drink was ok, but not to my liking -- like an old school fruity drink that needed an umbrella. The Senegalese food was very good - I loved the guacamole with yucca fries - had never had them before and liked them a lot. We had red curry with lamb and various vegetables, including yucca. Dee-lish! Reminded me of Indian food, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended"

  • "This is a great place in terms of reasonable prices and interesting food. I had not been here since the days of its previous location, and it was good to see that its charm is fully intact. My experience was somewhat marred by a screeching, cackling, shrieking group of women at a nearby table who had zero sense of volume control or concern for others' ability to carry on a conversation. Their presence made it hard to call the meal enjoyable, but that is not the fault of the restaurant. I would definitely return, and if need be, ask to be seated elsewhere. The peanut chicken and the plantains are great."

  • "Waiters were really nice but did not serve well. We waited for about 15-20 mins to order. The food came fast but after entrees when we ordered desert, there was nothing for a half an hour. No one even came to check on us. I couldn't get anyone's attention from our trable. So I got up and wen to the waitress to let her know we were leaving. I could tell others had a similar experience: waiting for the final check up to ask for the check, etc. I will be back but but not in a hurry. As for the food, it was delicious. However, I wish they included more rice with their dishes."

  • "Bissap and Little Baobab is perhaps the best restaurant/bar/dance hall in the Mission district. The food is excellent, saves you the plane ticket to Senegal. Our waitress was especially attentive. Their cocktails are fresh, especially the coconut rum (downed three of those). Ambiance is laid-back yet energetic. Took my gf there for dinner/dancing on Valentine's and went back the next night with a group of friends. Would never say no to going out to Bissap and Little Baobab."

  • "A group of five, we got delicious food for one of the most moderate prices in the city. We took advantage of the happy hour special, appetizer, main dish, a drink for $20; very convenient for group celebrations...easy to split!"

  • "Our second time dining at unpretentious and delicious Bissap and Little Baobab an unusual Senagalese restaurant in the Mission. They offered us fruity happy hour drinks for 4 bucks each and a fixed price meal of salmon or lamb with appetizers and dessert for $30 each. All was very yummy with wonderful service. Highly recommend! We even found nearby street parking for a 6:30 reservation!"

  • "We had a reservation for 5 at 8:30 p.m. on a recent Saturday . By the time we were served, it was close to 10:00 p.m., when they move all the tables aside for the nightclub conversion. We barely had enough time to eat before we were being rushed to pay and pave the way for the evening's entertainment. The food was only fair, the noise was at a level to make conversation only possible through shouting, and the music wasn't to our liking. (I love most African music, but this was some sort of electronic disco music that was hard to dance to.) The management offered us free drinks as an apology for our poor service, and I am appreciative of that. But it is not enough to persuade me to return any time soon."

  • "Funcky ethnic senagalese restaurant in the mission. great, fun atmosphere, with dancing a music in the evening. We were not familiar with the menu, but the very sweet waitress walked us through it. Everything was delicious! We shared a great bottle of Chardonnay from South Africa , that would rival any California Chardonnay . I would try this spot for a great meal and fun night out"

  • "The waitstaff were very attentive and kind, the atmosphere had a great vibe, and the food was AMAZING, especially the fried plantains. The restaurant was pretty empty when we were there, but it was a Sunday night, and pretty early, so that was to be expected. I'll definitely be back, next time with friends!"

  • "Well my husband and I was a bit over dressed, and that was the only thing that was wrong, all else was simply, surprisingly great!!! Pleasant staff, well made drinks, food was fantastically tasting, and extremely friendly ora. definitely plan to go back with friends!"

  • "there was a delay in our reservations because the table wasn't ready with others from a previous reservation sitting around. Marco the owner came over and gave us a free pitcher of hibiscus margaritas, just to make the wait better! awesome!"

  • "First of all the staff was excellent. From the bar tender to the server to the person cleaning the windows. I have never had west african food and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the spicy shrimp appetizer, which can also be ordered as an entree. I also enjoyed the traditional chicken dish with rice. The server suggested it. The drinks were also different and tasty. I would go back!"

  • "I decided to give this place another shot after being underwhelmed on my first visit here a year ago. My instincts were confirmed. The food, though it sounds wonderfully appetizing on the menu, is mediocre. Passable, but certainly lacking any culinary flair or innovation. I was brought the wrong entree (which was even more mediocre than what I had ordered) but the server was quick to apologize, brought me a sampling of the entree I had in fact ordered (since I declined her offer for an entirely new entree as I was almost done eating by the time I addressed it with her), and then took my meal off of the check. So A+ for that. And the hot ginger tea is pretty amazing. Ask them to add a little whiskey. That alone is worth the visit."

  • "I went to Bissap Baobab once about 7 years ago when they were in their old location, and decided to try it again when I had friends visiting form out of town. It is really a great little restaurant, and the food is as good as I remember it being. The decor and atmosphere are fun too. Plus, it's so reasonably priced. My only issue was, I booked with opentable, and the restaurant put me down as a no-show (which really annoyed me). It took me a few days to get it sorted with open table, and I had to send them a copy of my receipt to prove that I had actually dined there. Not Open Table's fault, it's on the restaurant, which is why I marked service as 'Fair'."
