A word from Bissap and Little Baobab
Bissap Baobab has moved and merged with Little Baobab. Come visit us, only one block from our original location at 3372 19th Street between Mission & Capp, in San Francisco’s Mission District.

We have fused the best elements of Bissap (formerly Bollyhood Café) and Little Baobab to create Bissap Baobab Village. We serve Senegalese food and artisan cocktails using homemade hibiscus, tamarind and ginger juices, flavors that will deliver a truly international experience to your palate. In the late evening, talented musicians and dancers take the stage to entertain, transforming our space into a unique West African experience that you won't want to miss. Dine early or, dine late and stay for the evening. We look forward to giving you a warm Senegalese welcome.

Please note that we only take reservations for groups of eight or more and are happy to accommodate groups as large as 40 people.

  • Missed its potential....

This restaurant is missing its potential...needs some interior organization/freshening, even if it retains that neighborhood lowkey vibe. We took visitors from England here thinking that this would be something they wouldn't find at home. The service was slow considering that there were two wait staff and only 4 occupied tables. On the positive side, the curry prawns and plaintains were tasty appetizers. Unfortunately, our entrees were ruined because the lamb used was very poor quality....tough and filled with tendon. Wish we'd ordered the chicken!

Bissap and Little Baobab offered a solid menu with many flavorful dishes. My partner and I are vegetarian, and were extremely pleased with the variety of veg-friendly dishes offered. The cocktails were also unique and delicious. We would recommend drinking the ginger juice on its own AND in any number of the cocktails offered- what a treat.

Great Senegalese food here. Excellent Ethiopian and Eritrean food can be found easily in the San Francisco Bay Area (specifically in SF, Oakland, Berkeley), but it's much harder to find West African food in general. Senegalese food is fantastic, and this restaurant serves delicious dishes. Try it out!

Awesome music & great service with a fun bar scene, but food was subpar. I've been to this restaurant many times over the years, and had absolutely adored the food! Unfortunately, I don't think I would go back for the food because it was quite a poor experience & with so many other choice close by, I don't think it would really be worth it. We ordered an appetizer of shrimp, that was just ok, nothing special, in red sauce with a bunch of cold pita bread thrown onto it. Then within 2 seconds our food came out, but it was totally cold. Chocolate cake maybe premade frozen Cisco, or if homemade, they need to get a new recipe! Passionfruit vodka had frozen concentrate. Great service & so friendly, but such a shame the food was so miserable!

A GREAT time - food, atmosphere, ambiance.... a real treat in the city, the food was excellent. We ordered a bevy of plates and all were amazing - the seafood dishes in particular were very good and the appetizers (especially the empanadas) were perfect. The drinks were great and overall vibe - music, decor, and hospitality were off the hook. The service was a bit slow to start, but picked up in the middle and stayed great til the end of the meal. We'll definitely be back - great outing, head over for a great meal and a great time.

My girlfriends and I had a blast here! Food was excellent at a very reasonable price, better than I expected, even after reading the positive reviews on Yelp. There was a fabulous flamenco show during the Saturday evening that we went. The tables were small, chairs were rickety, place was crowded, but it made for a more social atmosphere. The staff was super friendly and relaxed, but the service was a slightly slower than most places I've been. With the live music and the fact that it turns into a club later in the evening, this is not a place for intimate conversations. It was a great mix of fun people, a variety of deliciously rich and spicy foods, and tasty cocktails. We danced to our hearts' content - an awesome girls' night out.

First off the food is out of this world. For vegetarians, pescetarians, and carnivores alike, you'll find something you'll love. Spices fill the room and stimulate your taste buds. My date and I both got the talapia. One in a zesty mustard sauce and one in a creamy coconut curry. We both finished our plates! The hibiscus margaritas are not too sweet and not too tart! Try them!! Stay after dinner for the amazing dancing!

Even though we were the only ones eating dinner at 8 pm, the whole place felt bustling, with colorful walls and ceiling, recorded African music playing and a band getting ready for a 10 pm dance party. Still, we could easily talk. The food was simple but actually delicious. I had the Niebe Thies with tofu (Tofu and rice served with black eyed peas cooked with vegetables in a spicy Senegalese sauce) and my companion had Yassa (Grilled chicken and marinated onions, served in a lemon, garlic, mustard sauce). Parking is difficult in the always buzzing Mission.

The food was tasty if unremarkable. After paying to add chicken to my veggie entree (which cost something like $15) I was surprised it contained only three tiny drumsticks. Miniature ones...appetizer size. This represented about 5 small bites of meat, which was tasty, if scarce. The service was friendly but slow (it took almost two hours to eat dinner at 6:00pm, even though the dining room was nearly empty). The best part of the meal was the excellent ginger juice and hibiscus juice, both of which were delicious. The worst part: going to the bathroom and being greeted by a sign that read: "No toilet paper in the toilet please...Thank you, the Baobab Family". That is a little *too* authentic for me.

This is a funky neighborhood spot. The menu is not extensive but what we had was v. good: shrimp in curry sauce, tropical salad and blackeyed peas with chicken and rice. The food and the music were wonderful. The menu is simple but tasty, and the staff friendly. Our only confusion was when they changed waitresses on us without warning. We plan on making another trip to enjoy them in the future. If you are thirsty try the rum infused coconut milk.

Last time I ate/drank here, about 5 years ago, it was incredible. I was so excited to take some friends there on a recent visit. Not one of us finished our dinners, though we were hungry as can be. The food was pretty abysmal - overcooked shrimp, and dried out potatoes, etc. Happily, the cocktails were still pretty delicious! Even so, I probably won't be going back.

We had a groupon for Bissap which included 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and a pitcher of cocktails. The food was very tasty, and the cocktail we ordered was outstanding. We ordered the rum, with hibiscus, ginger and tamarind juice. It was not sweet, just perfect, the way we like it. The juices are home made. Our excellent server, Ferdinanda, made the pitcher of cocktails exactly to our taste. We'd like to come back here sometime for the live music, drinks and food.

We just stopped here the other night before seeing a show in the Mission. And for two people, because of some happy hour deal the price for two was 40 dollars including appetizer, dinner and drinks. Well worth it.

The good qualities of this place are quashed by two factors. Even screaming cannot overcome the ambient noise level, so conversation is impossible while eating. For on-street parking, be prepared to circle for 20 minutes before settling on a spot 6 blocks away. Further, the prix-fixe savings is not nearly 50% as claimed on amazon local - more like 20%.

I booked a large party reservation for my sisters birthday party on the night of the Flamenco Dance show! The restaurant staff was very accommodating and helpful; they arranged for us to have a large table up front and a set per person price ($35 pp) which included an entree, an appetizer and a ticket for the performance. The food was EXCELLENT!! The drinks were good too and the server was nice and attentive. The dance performance was FANTASTIC!! Also, the restaurant allowed us to bring in our own birthday cake. After the show the DJ turned it out and we enjoyed the after party!! My sisters birthday was truly memorable because of Bissap! We will definitely be coming back soon! Thanks for the great party!

This was a cute, lively place, with great African Art everywhere. Very busy. My husband and I went at 7PM on a Friday night. Next time, we'll come earlier -- happy hour is from 5:30PM to 7PM. We tried the fancy drinks -- I had the Little Baobob, and Joe had the Tooni. Tooni was a ginger margarita - they make their own ginger juice - we liked it. Their signature drink was ok, but not to my liking -- like an old school fruity drink that needed an umbrella. The Senegalese food was very good - I loved the guacamole with yucca fries - had never had them before and liked them a lot. We had red curry with lamb and various vegetables, including yucca. Dee-lish! Reminded me of Indian food, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended
