Diner Reviews
  • "An Institution in S.F., Biscuits & Blues is one of the premiere venues for intimate performance/dinner shows. Our "star of the night": Amazing Janiva Magness–life history/interpretation/Style/and that VOICE!–made for one incredible experience. Intimate atmosphere: interact with friendly fellow fans (not invasive). Another advantage: stars meet/greet patrons, (one on one with CDs, etc. available). Wait staff: friendly, positive, helpful suggestions, never pushy/always appear with the good "sixth sense" of seasoned servers. We had that night's special homemade crab cakes, yam fries, cole slaw, (and a couple cocktails that snuck in). Ohh so good. If you've never been – go...if you have been – go again! P.S. Public parking, almost next door!"

  • "The food was really good. It was reasonably priced. The hostess and the server were great. The music was really entertaining and it was a great atmosphere."

  • "One of us ordered the "special" which was crabcakes. They were cold inside and glutinous, and obviously recycled from the night before. The fried chicken was very good, however. The crabcakes were sent back. But they were on the bill."

  • "If you like the Blues, you will love this club. It is authentic and a music lovers' delight. In addition, the food is terrific and reasonable. Great place to take out-of-town visitors to enjoy our great city."

  • "Great Southern style food to go with the terrific shows in an intimate setting."

  • "Biscuits and Blues TRYS for ambiance, and for good food. But sadly, it fails solidly in the food category. Wine choices are not much better, as this seems to be a place dedicated to boost tourism in the Union Square area. Unsuspecting patrons seeking good music will be in for a surprise, as they find themselves subjected to very loud music (the clue should have been that they sell ear plugs for $1.00 as you check in) by unknown musicians, and very mediocre food. It's a great idea...but fails to deliver."

  • "LOVED Janeva Magnuss. Limited menu and I am from Kentucky! Too much fried food."

  • "We came for the music, which was great. Food was well below expectations. On a postive note, the service is good and friendly staff."

  • "My wife and I were looking for a blues club in San Francisco - we were primarily interested in the music but the food and drinks were excellent as well. If someone is looking for a dining experience with quiet conversation this is not it. This is an experience about the band the crowd and the food which was the total package for us. I recommend it highly for blues enthusiasts with an appetite. Allen Bryant Drummond, MT"

  • "Four of us went for the Ray Charles Project on a Wednesday night. The music was fabulous, the food was decent, and the service better than expected. We are not big drinkers, but our waiter Dimitri kept our water glasses full and kept checking on us throughout the evening. We'll be back!"

  • "Fried chicken fantastic. Menu over all uninspired. Go early for choice of seating."

  • "My wife, my brother, his wife, and me it was our first time at this establishment. The place is small and a little too close for comfort (only knock) next time I'll get a booth. The good was great the music was awesome and the server was great! If you're looking for something current to do I would recommend giving this place a shot!"

  • "The reason to go to Biscuits and Blues is the music and performers, which are almost always very good. But, the food -- Southern and New Orleans cuisine - is priced well and more than adequate. So, make it a nice night out!"

  • "A small blues club with surprisingly good food. I went in not expecting much from a blues club, but the Ceviche was great, wings were good, Jambalaya was good and spicy. Overall, a nice experience. Service was great. The seating isn't the most comfortable, but if you are hungry and you want live music this place isn't bad."

  • "I would call myself a regular at Biscuits, and I always dine when I go, as that is the best way to secure a good seat for the music. Unfortunately, the food is inconsistent. I'm a healthy eater and thus tend to order the house salad and blackened catfish each time, and despite this never know quite what to expect. This time the salad dressing was slightly sweet, and the catfish was smothered in spice rub. Two or three visits ago, these two dishes were very good. This time, not so much. I don't know what accounts for the inconsistency in preparations, but it would be nice if this deficiency were cured, so that patrons could look forward to more than the music itself."

  • "Always a good time, the blacken cat fish was cooked perfectly but it was a little bit oily rich but great flavor. My husband always orders the fried chicken and was smiling all the way to the last licks. Biscuits and Blues is a must for everyone. The experience is worth it!"

  • "First visit to San Francisco area. This restaurant was recommended and we're very happy we followed it. Excellent service matched with excellent food. The show had everyone hopping! A great time and if I have a chance to be back in San Francisco, you can bet I'll return for more."

  • "Though my party and I did not eat at Blues and Biscuits, the cocktails were excellent and the service was outstanding. The venue is very intimate so the shows are of the "up close and personal" kind of performances which was AMAZING!!! Staff were extremely friendly and great sense of humor all round. After the show, we met with Kara Grainger, chatted with her, got signed CD's and the hung with the keyboard player and talked music. My friends I was with were visitors to California for the first time. One is a performer and the show was so inspirational to him that he completed the lyrics and score to a song he began working on his flight to CA. They thoroughly loved the venue and the show! Biscuits and Blues did California proud!"

  • "We went to hear blues and eat some southern food. The food was ok--not great. About the music: it was hard to tell, because it was so loud that we were covering our ears, until a staff member came over and said: "We sell earplugs for $1" That helped, but then we couldn't have any conversation--not that we could have heard each other anyway!"

  • "I invited my family out for a night in San Francisco for my sister's birthday. My dad loves the blues and I found this place online. We checked it out and it did not disappoint. We had so much fun and my dad was whistling and clapping along all night. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and kept our glasses filled."

  • "This place has been consistently a little gem of a club for years. I have seen some great entertainers here, and the food is great. I heartliy recommend it for music lovers."

  • "Earl Thomas was playing and he was outstanding. Our 2nd time here when he was playing. His backing band was great and energetic. The crowd was into it. The food and drinks are pricey considering the cover especially. The quality was so-so for the price. I had the smallest chicken wings I've ever had and jambalaya. My wife had salmon and shrimp and agreed it was so-so. But a fun night for sure."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Downstairs bar area is under-ventilated given the strong stage lights and occupancy. Fried chicken was a bit drier than it should have been. Can't recommend the chicken."

  • "I really enjoyed the music. But I really got the blues when I ordered a dinner for $22 and found out that the biscuits were $5 more. Really?"
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Biscuits & Blues is a real gem both as some of best (if not the best) southern soul food in the city and as an incredible venue for some spectacular shows spanning both rock and jazz ends of the blues spectrum. Their signature fried chicken meal is a legitimate slice of southern heaven. They have both creatively themed drinks and a good selection of whiskeys, brandys, wines, etc. Finally, there isn't a bad seat in the house; I was worried that showing up towards the back of their line with my reservation would mean a far-corner view of the show for my date and I, but the space is so intimate that I felt right in the action of the show from anywhere at the bar, the stage, or my table. I cannot recommend Biscuits & Blues highly enough."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "The biscuits are fabulous, but let's face it--it's all about the blues! Was there recently for the dinner show with Rick Estrin and the Nightcats playing. Even at the back tables, you're only a few feet from the stage. It was a great show. The Norwegian guitarist, Christoffer "Kid" Andersen, is truly amazing!"

  • "Decor is old and tired. Music was enjoyable. Sound had some issues. Food was better than I expected. I had shrimp with grits that I ordered with concern because the description did not fit the classic. It was in fact much more like the classic southern dish. It did not match the menu description. It's not conducive to eating. Tables are tiny. Better for music & drinks."
