Chef-Proprietor Burton Joseph operates his contemporary supper club in The Buckhorn tradition. Ingredients are locally sourced and menus are seasonal. Please dress up or dress down. Diner Reviews
  • "This is the first time EVER that we chose to eat out on Easter Sunday. I looked for a restaurant that was serving leg of lamb because that is our tradition. Birches came through! The buffet was lovely and the lamb was fine. No mint jelly, though."

  • "We love everything about this place...cocktails, food and the positive energy from the bar to the adjoined dining area. Staff is top notch as well. It's in our "favorite places" rotation."

  • "We found Birchs on Open Table and decided to give it a try. It is a small restaurant with a broad menu of small plates, pizza, burgers and pasta. We tried the rib appetizer, the fried chicken and the pizza of the night. The chicken and pizza were good, but nothing that blew us away - the ribs were great because of the smokey bbq sauce, which i would go back for again. They had a good special that night (1/2 price bottles of wine) which was a bonus. You could tell this is a neighborhood place, everyone was waving and saying hi to other dinners and the bar crowd was friendly with the servers. Overall, we liked it and would go back again for a casual dinner night - maybe once it's nicer out and we can sit on the large patio."

  • "The food and service at Birch's is always consistent. The servers are friendly and the food specials are always fresh and creative. The uniqueness of this restaurant is that you can sit down as a single diner and feel welcomed. Birch's has an eclectic clientele, family friendly as well as a great place for a date night. A very energetic atmosphere."

  • "Hadnt yet been this local eatery as it's a bit out of the way. Happy to find a local restaurant with good food and great service . I ordered scallops which were excellent and my wife ordered fish tacos which were a bit fishy tasting. The restaurant was busy and crowded yer the noise level is not bad and the service friendly and efficient.. I would definitely be willing to give this restaurant another shot and recommend it to a friend.."

  • "The restaurant is not well lit, rather dark. Several tables face the doors to the kitchen, and every time they swing open, which is often, bright annoying light blasts out on diners. Oh man was it aggravating. I may have been sat at the table they reserve for OpenTable clients."

  • "Wow - Birchs featured a terrific special menu for St Patrick's Day. My husband enjoyed the corned beef & cabbage while I thought the lamb stew was excellent, with tender meat & vegetables and a tasty sauce. Place was not rowdy so we enjoyed visiting with friends over the great meal and cocktails. Burt & Ashley always make us feel welcome."

  • "We enjoyed our food. The Fettuccine Bolognese and side of Brussels sprouts were both very good. Nice choice of wines by the glass. The owner was not very welcoming on our arrival, ignored us to answer the phone first and talk to some other people. Server was not very attentive or informative, either - she mainly just stopped by if we beckoned her over, but didn't check in about the food or any other needs. Could use some additional attention to maintenance as well. Tablecloth was dirty on the corner when we sat down - they evidently replaced the paper over it, but not the tablecloth itself. Garbage overflowing in the bathroom. We'll probably give it another shot, but hope to have better service next time."

  • "Birch's is the "go to" neighborhood restaurant! It is a guaranteed great experience, with excellent food. It is nice to see the owner, Burt Joseph is on hand to assure a quality experience."

  • "Me and my wife ate here for Easter Brunch. It was delicious. The bar was converted into a buffet and everything was fresh and cooked to perfections. It was very cramped and there was very limited seating, but this was managed through only reservations being allowed in."

  • "We find ourselves going back to Birch's over and over for occasions or when we are in the mood for REALLY GOOD Buckhorn chicken. The staff cares about the patrons and the chef knows how to make really good combinations of flavors. We will keep coming back."

  • "We chose Birchs for our Valentine's Day dinner. Positive: The ambiance and decor is very warm, cozy and romantic. Friendly host & wait staff. Drinks & desert were delicious. Negative: Even though I booked the reservation 3-4 weeks in advance, we were put at a table in the corner next to the swinging kitchen doors. There were plenty of other available tables and we chose an early time (5:30), so I'm not sure what we did to deserve such crumby placement. Lobster was expensive and overcooked. Asparagus & baked potato sides were cold. Waitress also tended bar (???), so our service was not very attentive."

  • "Needed a last minute reservation and Open Table found me the last one available at Birch's. Had been some time since going to them as we now live 1/2 hour away. I appreciated their service, etc. would recommend Birch's to anyone!"

  • "Birch's does Oysters really well. There are plenty of other reasons to go, and you could have great meals there night after night even skipping the oysters, but their oyster specials are superb. Ashley is an extraordinarily attentive and professional server/businessperson who goes out of hervesybto make you feel valued in a comfortable, casual way. Though there are few pitfalls in the menu, she helps you navigate to your tastes, temptations and peccadillos for a specific evening to enhance your vidit."

  • "I love this place for the cozy and low key atmosphere. The wine list was really good and it was Tuesday, so 1/2 price bottles of wine was a big plus. There were 3 of us and we chose to split a few dishes and that worked out well. Would like to see a few salads that are tasty but perhaps not so caloric. It was a very good experience. The service was wonderful!"

  • "The food was great, the service good and the ambience less than optimal. We were seated by the noisy bar with people standing by our table since there wasn't room for everyone at the bar. The tables in our area were crowded. We were next to the kitchen which resulted in the doors constantly swinging open. The bright light in the kitchen also came through the windows in the doors. It was hard to talk and the table location annoying. I would go there again for the food but would not accept the table by the kitchen and bar."

  • "My wife had the salmon - she thought is was forgettable. My short ribs were excellent. House salads were excellent. The tuna tartare was just ok - a little fishy. The service was top notch. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Ambience was very cozy, which we like. One thing I would recommend is that they offer bottled water, which they don't, because the tap water has a real chemical taste to it, felt like I was drinking out of a swimming pool. They had an extensive drink menu but, since we don't drink, a bottled water option would have been nice. We will eat there again (when they get water)."

  • "We so enjoyed the food! This lovely little restaurant was recommended by my son-in-law's co-worker. Our group had the short ribs, baby back ribs and salmon, plus appetizers. We loved it all! We will definitely return for another great meal."

  • "We have donned here several times because we love the location and ambiance. The food sounds good, but is too salty. Additionally, the wait staff is inattentive and aloof. Disappointing because we really wasn't to like it."

  • "Always pleased with food and service at Birch's - onion rings are the best in town, along with the grouper sliders. Small plates to full meals, always good. Great Long Lake local restaurant."

  • "Birch's is a stand-out. Wonderful ambiance, great service, and amazing food. The menu offers items that are creative and fresh. We even tried their mac-and-cheese pizza for an appetizer, which sounds ridiculous, but it was to die for. Also, the bartenders know how to make a real martini--shaken with a layer of shaved ice on top. Well done!! We will return very soon."

  • "The appetizers were off the charts. The entres were both very salty, again. This has happened to me 3 times in a row now. Not sure what to think? The pork has been overly seasoned twice now. We will go back for the appetizers. Best in town. Nice wine list. We had a bottle of the prisoner. Our favorite"

  • "The food is excellent and creative. Plenty of options. The place is smaller, but warmly decorated. Perfect for intimate dinner with loved one or small family. Very nice staff, good service. We've only been to dinner but bar is inviting...looks like it would be a great place to while away an afternoon. Decent local beer selection - a small selection but they chose well. We've had beef, seafood, chicken and vegetables. Everything was perfectly cooked and very tasty."

  • "The restaurant was smaller then I thought it would be. It was more casual then it looked on line, which we liked. We were seated at our reservation time. The food was out standing."

  • "Sunday night at Birchs! 13 of us enjoyed an amazing evening of food, drink and conversation! Our meals ranged from Burgers to Boar Chops! Each of us left with food satisfaction! I personally had the Truffled Shrimp Casserole, I had been told to try it and finally did...I know I will order this again! Thank you."

  • "We visited on a night when the Prairie Dog pop-up event was going on. What a great idea! We had a mix of Birch's menu along with a couple dogs. Good service and great atmosphere. Will go back again! When/where is the next pop up event for Prairie Dogs?"

  • "Birch's is a chef driven restaurant with great service. It has been our favorite go to place in the western suburbs. The specials, wine, and beer change often, so there is always something new. Getting to know the servers has made each visit like a reunion."

  • "The food was good, decent wine list, attentive server, I enjoy going to Birchs, if you can get a decent table, ours was great! I also enjoy the more unusual food combinations!"

  • "This was our third visit to Birch's and we will be back again. The food is consistently of high quality, and the service was again outstanding. The wait staff is always well trained and friendly and they don't miss a beat."

  • "I took my girlfriend's parents out for an early Saturday dinner before the crowds hit about 6:30 and they were having to turn away walk-ins. Food was very nice, with a unique beef-shrimp hash, a very large veal Bolognese, and a slightly undercooked seared Scottish salmon. Decent selection of draft beers, including the Surly Furious I indulged in. Unsurpisingly, the by-the-glass wine selections were quite limited. I really like the feel of this place. It is attractive and feels "energetic" even when it isn't full, probably because of the wooden bar area and flat-screen TVs. Wait staff is attentive if not polished, and the chef seems to enjoy experimenting with different types of dishes. We'll be back!"

  • "Consistency is such an important aspect of a good restaurant. I always have the meal that I was expecting when I go to Birchs. That statement doesn't sound exciting but there are too many times when I go to other restaurants that I leave feeling underwhelmed. Not at Birchs. What I love about their menu is that it fits many moods. If I want to have a higher end dinner, I can do that. If I want a burger and fries or fried chicken, I can do that too. Thank you Birchs for being a great restaurant and paying attention to the important details."
