Overall Birch and Barley was a great experience. The beer menu was unreal, especially the gluten free/cider menu. The gluten free options were excellent as well. All of the breads were baked in house and the meats cut and cured in house as well which was fascinating and delicious at the same time. The service was great and the ambience was great. The food overall was good. Definitely worth checking out if you're in DC for the weekend and you're a celiac or gluten intolerant.

I planned ahead for Birch & Barley. Located in Logan Circle, this is a DC hot spot. I had their famous chicken and waffles for brunch, and as a person who is not big on fried chicken, I really loved the dish. I wish there had been more of a selection on the brunch menu -- it felt like a lot of lunch/dinner options and not many breakfast-oriented items, what with all of the flatbreads. Overall, the service was great and I enjoyed the food.

This place was well done from start to finish. The location and the finish of the restaurant is really nice and you feel like you've got plenty of space and privacy even at the small tables in the bar area. The food and the service were simply exceptional. Our waiter did a really nice job of helping my wife choose a beer that was going to suit her taste and he was attentive without being overbearing. The chef's in the kitchen have done a masterful job with "passion" items like the charcuterie. It's one thing to crank out a great plate on the moment but when you've got to nurture something along it takes a whole different level of engagement. The team here is clearly engaged and takes great pride in what they do, thanks for a great time.

Found Birch and Barley by reading an article in the New York Times about the top 20 restaurants for brunch in the south. We were planning a weekend in DC already (Taste of DC), so with high expectations, we made reservations for brunch. It is a nice, quiet and clean restaurant, with good service, but the food just didn't come close to meeting our expectations for a "Top 20" restaurant. The acclaimed chicken and waffles were okay, but not noteworthy and the apple french toast was tasteless and completely uninteresting. The doughnuts and the mimosas were the best part of the meal. If you are a beer enthusiast, you may enjoy Birch and Barley, but if you are a foodie, frankly, the food trucks at the Taste of DC offer better quality.

Overall, a positive brunch experience. Service was great and food was mostly good. I will pass on the doughnuts next time, but the sticky bun and denver omelette were excellent. Also recommend their hash browns and toast. Well-priced and well-executed food.

I think this is only my second review in my whole life. Food: Outstanding. Complex, subtle flavors, inventive ingredients and combinations. Everything was fresh and super high quality--just the right portions and served at the right temperature. Love that it's farm-to-table. Service: Impeccable. They remembered it was our anniversary from when I made the reservation weeks ago. Our waiter was gracious (and kind!) about an inconvenient food intolerance I have and very knowledgable about all the food and drink on the menu in general. Service was prompt. We enjoyed an appetizer compliments of the chef. And finally, I left my cell phone on the table and our waiter ran down the block after us to return it! Class act, Birch & Barley!

This was our second time here. The duck entree was very tasty and cooked to perfection. We were a bit disappointed that the most expensive entree of short ribs and steak had very pieces of meat on it. The mac and cheese was also not what we were expecting. I personally don't like onion that much, and the first bite was overpowering with it. The cheez-it-flavored graham cracker helped get rid of it though. That being said, the first time we came here we had outstanding service, food, and beer all around so we had very high expectations coming this second time. Service has always been outstanding, waiters and bartenders are very knowledgeable with recommendations, they are very friendly and prompt, and genuinely deserve the tips we give them.

Early reservations since we had a concert to get to, arrived around 6:15 and the place was already hopping, seems to be a pretty trendy new hot spot. The book of beers is so large as to be unreadable but the selection is pretty amazing and the ones we tried were great. The server was attentive and helpful though sometimes a little hard to find, it was pretty hectic for a Wednesday night. The kitchen seemed a bit overwhelmed and our food to quite some time to come out, we mentioned our deadline and the server managed to get our food expedited by the chef. The food was quite good though maybe not as wonderful as I had hoped. The beef dishes my friends had were great so perhaps my fish was the only underwhelming item. A fun cool place.

I recently hosted a bridal brunch at Birch and Barley and it was the perfect setting for a very casual gathering to celebrate the bride-to-be. The food was delicious and well presented. Staff was very attentive and patient (we didn't all arrive right on time and they had another party coming in after us). My only suggestion is that if you don't live in the neighborhood that you opt to metro or Uber/cab because parking is impossible (the cause of most of our guests delays).

Saw that the pastry chef was a James Beard semi-finalist and looked forward to the brunch goodies. They were dry and nothing to write home to mom about. Our party tasted the flatbread, omelet, and brat burger. The flatbread wasn't flat--too much dough. The omelet was okay, but nothing was special about it. The brat burger was dry. All in all, a waste of calories.

Took my sister here for an early birthday brunch. She's a fan of the chicken and waffles so I knew we had to come to this place. I told the waitress we were celebrating a birthday and ordered the donuts. We both ordered the chicken and waffles as well. A few minutes later, we were brought out a pastry tray compliments of the chef. There was only one donut hole on there but there was also 2 full size donuts, a piece of chocolate banana nut bread and a pecan roll. The people on both sides of us were definitely jealous. Then one chicken and waffle came out. The waitress didn't realize we ordered two of them but was quick to correct her mistake. It was an enjoyable meal but the tables on the patio are a bit close and then a car alarm went off.

Went to brunch on a brisk morning. We were seated at great table just inside the patio so we had fresh air without direct sun. Service was absolutely impeccable by waiter Warren! Everything we ordered arrived on time, cooked to perfection, seasoned to perfection. Every menu item was worth the order. Portions were large on some items. I had the egg biscuit and would order it again. Coffee was flavorful which is important to our group. We liked the special seating area up by the kitchen. Decor was simple, almost industrial but warm at the same time. Host staff was welcoming. Water always filled. A few people had the brunch alcohol beverages and they were happy with their drinks. We mention this place regulary now! We will be back.

Birch and Barley is one of the best restaurants I've ever ate at. My husband and I have been there twice, once for dinner where we did their 6-course tasting menu, and once for brunch. Every dish I've had there has been amazing, and for the tasting menu, the food and beer pairings couldn't have been a better match than they were. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who loves high quality, local food with a bit of a twist to it.

It was an outstanding evening with great company and a delicate selection of dishes that combined summer flavors. The ingredients complemented each other. The grilled bluefish with a silky yellow-split pea puree, the vegetable and fig risotto, the nice and crispy pan-seared grouper, and a great mussel and cheese flatbread were our main dishes. Our beer selections and later recommendations from our nice and friendly server were right on target. From our host to our server we felt that they wanted us there. I'm glad the competition on 14th street is making easier to find reservation. We had tried the bar, but now without having to wait for hours, we enjoyed this great place.

A group of four of us came to Birch & Barley to celebrate my boyfriend's 30th birthday, and it went perfectly. We all consider ourselves to be adventurous eaters, so in my singular opinion the menu was less concerned with its level of eccentricity, but more so with amazing execution of the presentation, flavor profiles and innovative take on ingredients. The portions were right, the timing was right, and our server was increasingly helpful (and brought out a special dessert for the birthday man). Birch & Barley has a great venue, sources their food responsibly, and is packed with great people. Thank you!

The garage door is a nice touch, although be aware that the setting sun will shine in the eyes of those facing the outside for a short while. Our waiter was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The list and variety of beers are impressive. Complaint: The food is too salty. Even the excellent bread was sprinkled with salt when it didn't need it. I recommend letting the herbs and spices do the talking and keep the salt to a minimum.

My husband's a big beer aficionado, so this was the perfect place to hold his birthday dinner. We both ordered the tasting menu, and while I went with the beer pairing for each course (an additional $25, well worth the amount of beer we received), he ordered from the beer list (there's both a double-sided draft beer list and a huge book worth of bottled beers as well.) Though the portions on the tasting menu were very small, they were delicious, and the beers with each one were perfectly selected to bring out the nuances of each dish's flavors. $200 total for our dinner, which was appropriate for a birthday dinner, so we were very pleased!
