Diner Reviews
  • "Birch & Barley is a great combination of an amazing beer menu and great food! I am not a beer drinker but enjoyed their wine list. Our server was terrific, giving great care to my dairy allergy, being extremely knowledgeable about each dish and gave excellent recommendations! We live in this vibrant neighborhood and will be back again!"

  • "I made a reservation at this location because it had a notable beer list and my bf looooves beer. Well, let me say that the beer list is quite long, but since I'm not a huge beer fan, I opted for wine. The food is another thing. I was NOT impressed at all. Not sure if it's a DC thing to make all things "organic" or "free-range whatever", but really I couldn't figure out half of the menu. I don't care for all the fancy wording or fancy chickens (none of which they had) but just give me real food. I saw our neighbor's plates, and the amount of food is quite minimal. We had a few beers and a flat bread appetizer and left to go eat somewhere else."

  • "We live in VA, so it can be a bit of a challenge to get to the neighborhood (more of a challenge to park, actually). Parking is probably my biggest knock on the place, but they seated me while I waited for my husband to park and never made me feel like I was monopolizing the table. . We've only gone for brunch but the food was very memorable (and probably more generous portions than I need, but that works out nicely for my husband). Fresh ingredients, well prepared and flavorful. Their Bloody Mary's are rather special as well, as I find them lacking in most places. It can be rather dark inside, but that's a product of the space. However, we'll be making the trip back out soon!"

  • "The octopus appetizer was amazing and the waiter described it so well that most of us ordered it. The desserts are amazing, they have one of the best desserts chefs!"

  • "Went for a later dinner and the restaurant was still very busy. Our server provided us extra beer pairings with our dishes, which was unexpected but much appreciated - especially since she did an excellent job with the pairings. We were quite full of food and liquor when we left. The chef even sent out an extra complimentary dish for us to enjoy. We were treated very well and will tell everyone to go to Birch and Barley. Excellent food, drinks, and service!"

  • "Been many times and gotten the tasting menu which had delicious food with beer pairings that were excellent but this time the tasting menu was medicare and the pairings did not go. (liked the beers but the didnt go with the food well) It was quite a disappointment. Would have to try one more time before I write it off."

  • "After reading other reviews --- excited to go hear. But the food was mediocre and a bit overpriced. This is a fancy upscale beer location. So if you like trying different beers this is the place to go --- For dinner, not so much…."

  • "We had a beer upstairs at Church Key and went downstairs for dinner at Birch and Barley. Both have impressive beer menus and we had stuff we had never seen on tap (and we are beer snobs). Flat bread for an appetizer which was nice to pair with the beer. Server seemed new and didn't know the menu very well but was pleasant and attentive. It was an early evening on Tuesday so probably a good time to get the new help trained. Main courses were a pasta with pistachio pesto, pork loin and trout. All were good although the portions were small. Trout dish had a surprising lack of actual protein on it but the taste was there. Small pour (available for all beers) of another unique beer for dessert. Overall good experience and we will be back."

  • "The food was expensive but excellent but the service was truly outstanding! I have a couple of food allergies and the staff was knowledgeable and so helpful. What a wonderful dining experience and we will certainly come back."

  • "Huge selection of draft beers. Comfortable pleasant ambiance. Wonderful service from friendly knowledgeable servers. But the food is their crowm jewel."

  • "Great menu. For anyone who likes grits, come here and order them as a side--they are the best grits I've had. The beer choices are extraordinary, and the cookie dessert plate was delicious."

  • "We went excited about the beer selection and appetizing menu. However, the food was just bland and not good. Totally not worth the money. My pork and sausage dish tasted like it had been reheated, plus it was a really small portion size. I wouldn't have minded that it is was amazing. I tried the other dishes in our party and everyone agreed it was nothing spectacular. Just another bland DC restaurant. Only thing they got going was the beer list. Eat somewhere else and drink beer there."

  • "What a wonderful quirky restaurant! The food was great, even for my husband who isn't always thrilled by "new" things. The server was well versed on the menu and wine/beer pairings. Just lovely!"

  • "I consider myself someone who does not choose restaurants by here-say. I search out exquisite menu's. Birch and Barley is on the list of restaurants that has a menu of gold."

  • "I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. He is much more a beer connoisseur than I, but we both enjoyed ourselves with the tasting menu and beer pairing. The place isn't quiet, but 2 or 4 can carry on a conversation easily. Give yourself plenty of time if you choose the tasting!"

  • "The highlights of Birch & Barley for me was a very good drink menu, especially the beer selection. The menu had a nice mix of starters and entrees and I liked the soft shell crab and the chicken liver. I didn't have a bad experience with the service, but found the waitress entirely unengaged. I asked her for recommendations and she gave 1-2, but couldn't have cared less if I actually liked them or not. Normally folks say, 'How do you like the (blank)?', but no such interest on her part. Coincidentally, I went upstairs to Church Key for a drink and the bar staff was the surliest I have come across in D.C. Note to them: It's okay to make eye-contact with patrons."

  • "Went for dinner for the first time and was accompanied by two gluten-intolerant friends. Just about everything on the menu could be accommodated for my friends and very tasty as well. Will definitely return"

  • "The food was delicious, although some of the entrees didn't come out quite how we'd imagined - the lamb came out as lamb sausage, but I suppose it's possible I just missed that on the menu. The fuss part would be our server - he was pompous and arrogant. He corrected us a couple time on the pronunciation of some beer labels, went off on a long unnecessary diatribe about the origination of a Kolsch, and was overall just not very friendly. By the end of the night it had ruined the experience for us."
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "The beer list is extensive! If you like trying different beers this is the place to go! The food is superb! It is not your usual bar grub!"

  • "Go with the tasting menu. It was fantasitic. The flat breads, etc. are nice, but not the reason to come here. They were flexible to accomidate our veggie and vegan needs. "

  • "Twice we have brought out of town guests here for the beer pairing menu and all of us were blown away. The knowledge of the staffers was amazing and the whole night was truly entertaining. This is what dining out is all about. "

  • "My girlfriend brought me back to Birch and Barley for my last birthday in DC before moving, and B+B did not disappoint. Everything we ordered was fantastic, particularly the goat pasta, but what was more impressive was the sheer quantity of freebies that are brought out with each course. We received a pair of arancini, a delicious flatbread, a nice pickle board, the duckfat peas, and some extra desserts without asking for anything. As always, the beers and service were spot on. Birch and Barley's my favorite restaurant in the city for good reason!"

  • "All I can say is, "AWESOME"! Dined at B&B with my gluten-intolerant spouse, who was apprehensive that the focus on beer-food pairings would amount to no flexibility concerning menu choices. Nothing could have been further from the truth! The every member of the staff involved in the experience, including servers, managers, and chefs, went to extraordinary lengths to adjust and substitute GF items that allowed our meals (we did a tasting menu for 2) to remain comparable in their quality and dining profile. Add to this a concerted effort to create wine pairings for my beer-averse spouse that went above and beyond and one ends up with one of the finest dining experiences we've ever had. The food was VG-E, but the service was what stood out!!! "

  • "The boozy brunch is an awesome deal at $30, you get 3 drinks (2 cocktails and bottomless coffee or ice tea), 3 donut holes, and any entree. I tried two of the bloody marys and Enter the Dragon was easily the best bloody mary I've ever tasted. It had sriracha people! Yes your mouth will be on fire but it will not stop you from devouring every drop. "

  • "I'd read many very good reviews of this restaurant and was really excited to finally have the chance to eat there. The pluses-the host and server were both very nice and had no problem seating me while my husband parked; the coffee and our cocktails especially were really good. I had the brunch punch, hubby tried 2 different bloody marys (muddy blarry), all were different and delicious. Minuses-parking on street is nonexistent, $20 for 2 hrs in a garage. Food=meh. The much raved about chicken and waffles-tiny bit of dry chicken, dry waffle. Donut holes, waited till end of meal till they showed up, tasted like microwaved Dunkin holes. The French fries with the brat burger were really good. OK if you're in the area."

  • "I'm no "foodie," per se, but I dine out a lot in a city known for its dining. This one is an easy decision. Just go. The food was outstanding. Our waitress was very helpful. The ambiance is ideal for a date night and the partner bar upstairs, Churchkey, is a nice change of pace if you want a night cap."

  • "Expect house-made sausages, pates and roulette; pickled veggies, pretzel rolls, biscuits and olive bread from scratch; craft cocktails, well-curated whiskeys and bourbon; and, a beer list to impress any hopicionado. Then they go beyond. Somehow, they always manage to impress and indelible memory either food or service-related to ensure this is the one restaurant in D.C. I make certain to visit each time I return."

  • "Heavy on gastropub feel, goes over the top on most entree items. Some of the best things on the menu were the apps and comp bread before the order."

  • "Birch & Barley is a gem. Everyone from the hostess to the back of the house is friendly, considerate and genuinely cares about your dining experience. The food not only tastes delicious but is beautifully presented. I recommend the Tasting Menu so you can try a little of everything! Also, the manager stopped by after our meal to ask if we enjoyed the Tasting Menu and if there was any feedback he could relay to the chef...I love when chef's are constantly striving to do better. That's a chef that's passionate about his food! "

  • "Girlfriend and I decided to repeat our first date and had an incredible time. I brought flowers beforehand and the host hid them for me, bringing them over with our first drink, surprising her. Great night and can't wait to go back."

  • "I've been coming to B&B since soon after it opened and the food has always been reliably excellent. Their pasta dishes are tender with mouth-watering sauces; they prepare fish, like the halibut I had recently, as good as any I've ever had. In the past, every dish was fabulous and I'd leave raving, but two visits since March haven't lived up to what I've come to expect. While some dishes have been on par, more have been rather nothing, like the mix of flavors cancel out all the taste. Until these two visits, the service has been amazing, so good we've stopped to tell the manager. These two visits have left a lot to be desired in that area as well. I will give B&B another chance, but the prices are too high not to get good service & food. "

  • "Went to Birch and Barley for my boyfriends birthday for a late-night dinner (9 p.m. reservation). We had a great service and great food. We started with the pickle plate and fresh bread, order Halibut with snap peas as a side and my boyfriend ate the pork dish. Just amazing! We are still talking about those snap pea to this day. Since it was my boyfriend's birthday, we received two desserts - one we paid for and one as a gift. All delicious and wonderful. "
